Tea celebrates seniors 90 and older

n its 16th year, the Senior High Tea was a celebration of women and men in the Arvada community who are age 90 and older.

More than 70 seniors, ages 90 to 100, gathered March 9 at the

Apex Community Recreation Center with their guests for the annual event.

“It’s reaching a population that is forgotten, “said Brenda Berg, special events coordinator for the city of Arvada. “It’s about them. Getting them out, letting them have fun and honoring them.”

Jasper Ellison, 100, was the oldest senior in attendance at the High Tea.

Pauleta Oehlerking and Gene Zuber, 98, get in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit at the High Tea held March 9 in Arvada.

Amur tiger arrives at Denver Zoo 8-year-old Yuri will make his home at The Edge exhibit STAFF REPORT

The newest exhibit at the Denver Zoo is now home to one of the newest residents.

Yuri, an 8-year-old, 435-pound Amur tiger, arrived in late January from Bronx Zoo, according to a news release. His arrival was at the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’

Species Survival Plan. Yuri’s new home will be in the zoo’s The EDGE exhibit.

Yuri has spent several weeks getting comfortable in his new home and will be introduced to 8-year-old Nikita once he is adjusted to his new habitat and caretakers.

Because Yuri hasn’t sired any cubs yet, his genetics are particularly valuable to zoos’ collective efforts to save the species and maintain a healthy, genetically-diverse population of Amur tigers. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists Amur tigers as endangered, primarily because of poaching of tigers as well as their wild prey species.

Yuri was born at the Erie Zoo in 2010, but has spent seven of his eight years at the Bronx Zoo. Eagle-eyed viewers may recognize him from Animal Planet’s “The Zoo,” which takes viewers behind the scenes at the Bronx Zoo. He is making more frequent appearances in one of the two main yards in The EDGE, which brings guests closer than ever to our two tigers.

Visitors can identify him by the heart-shaped markings above his eyes and his size — he’s close to double Nikita’s weight.

How Do You Know the Real Estate Agent You’re Interviewing Is Telling You the Truth?

This is a difficult topic, but it’s one that deserves discussion. As I’ve pointed out before, there are so many licensed real estate agents that fewer than half of them earn a living solely from brokering real estate transactions. (FYI, all 10 Golden Real Estate agents are full-time, earning enough from their real estate careers not to require a second job.)

That means that the agent you are interviewing may feel lucky to have two or more transactions per year and capturing you as a seller or buyer could be super important. This could cause him or her to misrepresent their level of success as well as their experience and market knowledge.

I can safely recommend every Golden Real Estate broker associate, not only because they are full-time and successful, but because they adhere to the Realtor Code of Ethics. I have let go previous associates when I observed or learned about ethical lapses. Unfortunately, all of us can recount times when we have observed ethical lapses by agents on the other side of a transaction.

The Pareto principle applies to real estate agents as it does to other occupations, with 20% of us doing 80% of the transactions. And since the average real estate agent has only four closings per year, the median number of closings is probably closer to two. In other words, half of the licensed agents have two or

fewer closings per year. That does not translate into a living wage.

In researching this topic, I googled the phrase “what does the average Realtor make,” and I urge you to do it, too — especially if you are considering real estate as a career. It’s very discouraging.

A posting on TheStreet.com, for example, includes the following: “If you think you can just devote a few hours a week and make a nice income as a real estate agent, you are badly deluded. A national survey of agents and brokers who belong to the National Association of Realtors finds that agents who put in 60 hours or more a week have median earnings of $100,000 a year. By contrast, for those who put in less than 20 hours a week, the median is $8,930 a year.

At Golden Real Estate we had about 100 transactions in both 2017 and 2018, or an average of 10 transactions per agent. We don’t need to mislead a buyer or seller regarding our level of experience and success. Also, we have weekly office meetings where we discuss all aspects of the business, often with guest speakers. We take the annual commission update class and the biennial Realtor Ethics class together in our office, so we’re all on the same page.

Then you could click on a listing to see the quality and thoroughness of it. That’s the best indicator of how well they’ll serve you.

One common mistruth told by agents is, “I have a buyer for your house.” All too often it’s a ruse to get your listing,

after which they tell you that the buyer found another house, “but we’ll find you another buyer after it’s on the MLS.” Another lie is “Our listing fee is 1%.”

Freeze frame the end of that commercial (as I did) and you’ll read that it doesn’t include the commission owed to a buyer’s agent (2.8% in our market), and if a buyer has no agent, the 1% fee will be increased. I’ll post that freeze frame with this article at GoldenREblog.com

Steuben’s Arvada partners with Girl Scouts for cookie-flavored desserts Girl Scout cookie ice cream and cupcakes are available all March

A

nnual Girl Scout cookies sales may have ended March 10, but Steuben’s Arvada is keeping some of the iconic flavors at the forefront with ice cream and cupcakes made from and inspired by Thin Mints, Tagalongs and Samoas.

The sweet treats are the creation of Executive Pastry Chef Nadine Donovan, who bought 72 boxes of Girl Scout cookies from Morrison-based Troop 5453 to incorporate into the desserts.

For the month of March, Donovan is making Thin Mint, Tagalong and Samoa ice cream and cupcakes, which will be on rotation at Steuben’s as the “special flavors.”

For the cupcakes, Donovan chops the cookies up and bakes them in to cupcakes. She is also making frosting flavors that pair with the cookie flavors. For the ice cream, the flavor of the cookies are heightened and pieces are also incorporated in.

The Samoa ice cream, for example, is a coconut ice cream base with a caramel swirl and Samoa cookie pieces.

Ice cream and cupcakes made with Thin Mint, Tagalong and Samoa Girl Scout cookies will be on rotation at Steuben’s Arvada throughout the month of March.

Members of Troop 5453 visited Donovan at Steuben’s Arvada March 4 to taste-test the ice cram flavors. Word like “heavenly,” “divine,” and “delicious” flowed from their mouths in between large bites of each flavor.

“It’s been a really sweet partner-

ship,” said Troop leader Lisa Rago.

“It gives the girls the experience that it can be bigger than just me selling cookies to my neighbors and friends and family. That businesses really enjoy taking part and doing something positive with the girls. And it goes

back to the community.”

In addition to buying the cookies from the troop, Steuben’s will also donate 20 percent of proceeds from sales of the Girl Scout-inspired desserts to the charity of the troops choice.

The philanthropy chosen by the scouts is the Intermountain Humane Society in Conifer.

“The kids were really interested in doing something with animals,” Rago said.

The troop plans to use their profits from cookies sales to go camping as a group.

Blind skiers hit the slopes in Breckenridge For the tenth time, the United States Association of Blind Athletes helped blind people learn to ski at the Winter Ski Festival

Lakewood resident Chloe Poston loves to ski.The fifth grader at Rooney Ranch Elementary said her family tries to go skiing every weekend during the winter, but on a most recent weekend, she got to ski with other blind children.

Poston took part in the Winter Ski Festival in Breckinridge on Feb. 28 through March 3. The United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA), a community-based organization of the United States Olympic Committee, and the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, a nonprofit organization that provides outdoor learning experiences to people of all abilities, partnered to supply lodging and trained ski guides to 17 blind people at the Breckenridge Ski Resort.

The event marked the 10th year the

USABA helped blind and visually impaired people learn how to ski at the Winter Ski Festival.

“I thought it was pretty cool how I could connect with (other blind people). I don’t see (skiing blind) very differently than doing it with vision.

You just can’t see what’s around you,” said Poston.

The ages of those who participated in the Winter Ski Festival with USABA range from five to 59 years old. They came from all around the country, and participated in alpine and nordic skiing.

“This program is one of our signature events. It has truly grown into something special, and we are pleased to mark our 10th anniversary,” said USABA Executive Director Mark Lucas in a statement.

The USABA has helped 100,000 blind people participate in sports since 1976.

It offers sports like rowing, swimming, hockey, judo, cycling and more.

“It’s been an incredible experience to support people who are visually impaired as they learn new skills that are challenging, exciting and help to enhance their active lifestyles,” said Greg Poulakos. Poulakos is the president of Anthem’s Life Disability and Supplemental Health business, the lead sponsor of the USABA’s event.

Olde Town Arvada channels New Orleans with Mardi Gras parade

he Brothers of Brass band brought the party to the streets of Olde Town Arvada March 5 during a Fat Tuesday kickoff parade. The first of its kind event in Arvada was a partnership with the Arvada Center for Arts and Humanities, the Arvada Business Improvement District and the Arvada Visitors Center.

“We’re all close neighbors and share so many people that we thought we should get together and do something fun,” said Marcus Turner, director of communications for the

Arvada Center. “It’s such a collaborative cool thing to be able to combine the business community with the arts community with the tourism community.”

The parade kicked off in front of The Bluegrass Coffee and Bourbon Lounge on Grandview Avenue with music from the Brothers of Brass, a local brass band.

With community members following, the band continues down Olde Wadsworth Boulevard stopping to jam at several spots before they landing at Denver Beer Co. for a grand finale.

Many businesses in Olde Town joined the celebration by offering Mardi Gras themes dishes and drinks.

Open Space considers land exchange for Heritage Square property Open Space would get 83 acres, Martin Marietta could extend operational life of nearby existing mine

The news that Jefferson County Open Space is considering a proposal for a land swap from Martin Marietta Materials, concerning Heritage Square, has gotten people curious about what may become of the vacant property.

However, that decision may not be made until later this year.

Heritage Square is “in a beautiful spot (that’s) very representative of Jefferson County,” said Tom Hoby, director of Jefferson County Open Space, during a community meeting on March 5.

“The art of it,” he added, will be providing something that is a benefit for the community with the least amount of negative impacts.

The land exchange proposal Jeffco Open Space recently received a proposal from Martin Marietta Materials — the mining company that currently owns the Heritage Square property — about a land exchange.

“For now,” Hoby said, “we’re looking at it as a land-for-land deal.”

The proposal has three components.

First, Open Space would receive 83.7 acres from Martin Marietta. This land consists of 78 acres of the former Heritage Square site — which is 125 acres total — and the 5.7-acre Bachman property located at U.S. 40 and Heritage Road.

Second, Open Space would deed about 64 acres of Matthews/Winters Park to Martin Marietta. This portion of Matthews/Winters Park is located north of I-70 and is currently not open for public use.

Third, Martin Marietta would deed the remaining 47 acres of the 125-acre Heritage Square site to Open Space, once mining operations are complete, in 25 or more years. This would be in addition to the mine’s entire 285 acres that Open Space will gain — when mining and reclamation are complete — from a 2002 deal. That deal, between Jeffco Open Space and Lafarge of North America, former property owner of the mine, exchanged 60 acres of Matthews/Winters Park for 522 acres of open space.

Future of the site “All future uses are just ideas at this point,” Hoby said, adding that any future development will include plenty of opportunities for community input.

Jeffco schools funds second round of innovations 19 projects earned funding in second year of grant program

First grade students at Fremont Elementary in Arvada are now incorporating learning on touchscreen Chromebooks into their daily routine. The initiative bridges the gap of technology between the schools’ kindergarten students, who are using touch-screen iPads, and the secondthrough fifth-grade students, who are using non-touch Chromebooks.

This was one of 19 projects to earn funding from the Jeffco Innovation Acceleration Fund 2.0.

“We don’t believe here a Fremont that every kid should be on a device all the time,” said Principal David Alex.

“Putting them on a computer right away I think would be detrimental to their growth. That’s the philosophy of a lot of our families a lot of our community members and a lot of out teachers.”

Instead, Fremont uses technology to demonstrate concepts they have learned in the classroom.

A priority at Fremont has been to do away with mixed-age classrooms, Alex said. That took money though, money taken from its technology budget. With

“But first grade simply had nothing,” Alex said. “I tried backfilling with donations from schools that had older devices, but a lot were broken.

Teachers would run from working with a small group to troubleshooting a device for a kid and playing wack-amole troubleshooting devices instead of really concentrating on learning.”

But the innovation grant changed that. In addition, the schools Parent Teacher Association matched the grant allowing for the purchase of 24 devices

for the two first-grade classrooms.

Last year, in January, the Board of Education for Jeffco schools approved $1 million for a new innovation grant program. The idea was proposed because the Jeffco Generations vision launched in October 2017 by Superintendent Jason Glass encourages entrepreneurial efforts as a way to “keep the main thing, the main thing,” — learning. The fund offers an incen-

tive for staff to look for innovative ways to improve learning, conditions for learning, and readiness for learning for Jeffco students and encourages the organizational value of “entrepreneurial spirit.”

All employees had the opportunity to apply for the grants and were encouraged to partner with other organizations, such as postsecondary institutions, nonprofit organizations, local businesses and community-based agencies to strengthen ideas and offer authentic learning experiences.

Last year 10 projects were funded.

This year, some of the funded innovations help to elevate projects of last year.

One of those is the grant that Hutchinson Elementary in Lakewood received for an Imagination Playground program.

Imagination Playground is an interactive way for students to build a playground using small pieces to design a model of the playground and then use larger, life-size pieces to actually engineer and test their design.

Jeffco BOE extends superintendent contract by 5 years Jason Glass now holds contract with Jeffco schools until June 2025

Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent Jason Glass now holds a contract for the position until June 2025.

The Jeffco Board of Education voted unanimously March 7 to extend Glass’ contract by five years.

“The things I value in this extension are that it creates stability,” said board-

member Brad Rupert. “Many changes we’ve talked about and made in the last couple years will take some time to mature; take some time to show positive results; and take some persistence to let things come to pass. I think there is value in providing for that stability.”

The contract extension deals solely with duration of time and does not increase Glass’ salary.

Glass’ original three-year contract with Jeffco, which began on July 1, 2017 lists a base salary of $265,000.

It also outlines a contribution to a tax-sheltered annuity plan or plans in the amount equal to 7 percent of the superintendent’s annual salary.

His original contract also outlines

an annual cost of living increase to his salary.

Boardmember Susan Harmon pointed out this yearly increase as it will continue with the contract extension.

Concern came from community members during public comment about the transparency of the contract extension as this was the first time it was listed on a public agenda.

This caused a discussion about transparency and policy by the board.

While this is the first time the discussion was on an agenda that allowed public comment, the board said they had previously discussed the contract extension in executive session.

“I’m really excited for Jeffco about this, but I don’t want there to be any question from anybody about our intent,” boardmember Ali Lasell said.

Craig Hess, chief legal council for Jeffco schools, advised the board that the item was on the agenda giving adequate notice to the public therefore the board was allowed to make a vote March 7, rather than waiting another month to allow for additional public comment.

“I struggle with this because I don’t want to stop people from having input,” Harmon said. “It has been on the agenda and we did hear from people tonight. I heard public comment on this.”

Police scanner access fading as agencies cite safety Some departments embrace encryption, drawing scrutiny from media experts

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office encrypted two of its four main radio channels approximately six months ago, which it hopes will make it easier for deputies using radios like this one to find secure lines during serious incidents.

Deputy Corie Chance sped in his vehicle to the scene of a shooting that would leave fellow Deputy Zackari Parrish dead and six other people injured.

Chance’s radio told him a gunman shot multiple officers the morning of Dec. 31, 2017. When he arrived on scene, word spread that an injured, unresponsive Parrish remained trapped in the gunman’s apartment, along with Parrish’s radio, feeding the suspect a stream of information.

An order went out to switch from the main radio channel to an encrypted one, but the new channel was buried under more than 15 options.

Chance fumbled through channels as bullets zinged around him, searching for the right one.

The experience in Highlands Ranch is why Chance is glad the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office has since encrypted — or blocked from the public — some of its main radio channels, and he hopes they encrypt all in the future.

But Jeffrey Roberts, who worked at The Denver Post as an editor and reporter for 23 years, is one of many raising concerns about the recent trend of Colorado law enforcement agencies encrypting their airwaves. Roberts is now executive director of the Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition, a

nonprofit group that advocates for freedom of the press and open records.

Members of the public and media frequently listen to scanners or apps to follow radio chatter. It helps them gauge whether the government is serving the governed, Roberts said, or informs neighborhood watch programs.

Many journalists rely on scanners to know when and where breaking news occurs. Scanners inform their line of questioning, give them leads and so on. Encrypted radios leave them at the mercy of law enforcement agencies, Roberts said.

“You really need this information, otherwise you’re just relying solely on the agency to let you know, and on their schedule, and in their fashion, and perhaps with their take on things,” he said.

Al Tompkins, the St. Petersburg, Florida-based Poynter Institute’s senior faculty and group leader for broadcast media, said encrypting radio channels is a national trend that began more than 20 years ago.

While it is “easy to understand why police want to have private radio transmissions,” encrypting can present a host of problems for the news media, said Tompkins, whose institute is a nonprofit school for journalism that is a nationally renowned resource on media issues.

Some members of the law enforcement community say encryption is crucial for protecting private information and first responders’ safety. Those opposed say it diminishes transparency and hinders the work of journalists.

To encrypt or not to encrypt?

The tragedy in Highlands Ranch spurred a policy shift at the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, which six months ago completed the encryption of two of its four main channels. It has roughly 20 in total. Prior to then its SWAT channels were encrypted.

The Columbia Journalism Review reported in January that more than

two dozen Colorado agencies fully encrypt their radios. The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office is still deciding if it will join those agencies. That remains a possibility, said Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth, although she did not know if or when a decision would be made.

The Denver Police Department is poised to block its radio traffic this spring. The agency’s suburban counterparts range in their level of encryption.

In 2017, the Thornton Police Department switched from public to encrypted radio signals. The Arvada department has fully encrypted for roughly three years. Littleton’s police department is researching encrypting one of its special operations channels.

The Castle Rock department began encrypting certain channels five years ago. Its main channels are public and encrypted lines are used on a case-bycase basis.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office encrypts two of its channels, one for SWAT and one for investigations, a spokeswoman said.

Other forces, including the Englewood Police Department, the Northglenn department and the Adams County Sheriff ’s Office, do not encrypt.

In Douglas County, Nicholson-Kluth said the sheriff ’s office encrypted some channels for two key reasons.

The first was illustrated through the Highlands Ranch shooting, she said.

The sheriff ’s office wanted deputies to easily and quickly find a secure channel when responding to serious incidents and to prevent suspects from tracking them through public channels.

“They don’t want the bad guys listening in,” Tompkins said.

But he questioned how often agencies could prove criminals use public radio channels to spy on law enforcement.

Douglas County’s second reason was to protect personal information that’s sometimes shared on the radio. If people were to make a public records request, Nicholson-Kluth said, it’s the type of information that would be redacted under open-records laws.

Thornton police officer Matt Barnes, a department spokesman, said transmissions on public safety radio systems are “much more prevalent today and are increasingly used to” share information on law enforcement and private citizens. It contributed to the department’s choice to encrypt, he said via email.

The Arvada Police Department switched after it experienced suspects tracking officers through radio scanners, said its spokesman, Detective David Snelling. Snelling described how in several instances, officers approaching a residence heard their transmissions from nearby smartphone apps or scanners seconds after they made them.

“You can imagine how unnerving that is,” he said, “when you can hear your own voice coming from inside the house.”

Snelling said the department switched over during an equipment update in 2015. It replaced or upgraded radio towers, installed in-car equipment, plus more, and because they had the ability to encrypt along the way, they did.

There was no additional cost for the encryption, he said.

A bill introduced by state Rep. Kevin Van Winkle, R-Highlands Ranch, was killed in committee during the 2018 legislative session.

It would have prohibited other agencies from following suit, allowing them to encrypt only in certain circumstances, such as tactical or investigative situations.

Van Winkle did not respond to a request for comment for this article, and it was not known if a similar bill would be introduced this legislative session, which ends in May. Saving Colorado How great if Colorado would enact a Secure Savings Plan so that all Coloradans can have a rainy day fund and a retirement plan. Our elected officials need a wake-up call!

Thousands of Coloradans retire every year and we’ve not made it easy enough to have access to retirement savings accounts.

Let’s establish a system that is portable, so the plan follows people when they switch jobs. And let’s set up a system that is auto-enrolling, so workers immediately start saving at a level that works for them when they start their first job.

Employers would have minimum record keeping, just another line on the pay stub. If workers want to opt out they have that option but I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised to find out how few people will opt out of a savings plan.

Coloradans want and need to save.

Ask your lawmakers to pave the way. Without plans for the future, many more Coloradans will have to depend on government assistance just to get by and that burden falls on all of us.

Safer streets needed With pedestrian-auto crashes increasing in the city, council is holding a public hearing March 18 to discuss ordinances that aim to keep pedestrians away from fastmoving cars. In addition to policy solutions, I encourage Council to adopt a “complete streets” approach to protecting all road users from

injury. For example, safety can be improved by establishing a stronger network of sidewalks and bike lanes that don’t have gaps or missing links. Regardless of which travel option we choose—biking, walking, busing, or driving—our transportation network should ensure that we are all able to get around without fear of getting hurt.

Its proximity a mere few car lengths away from where my children play in our yard. Distance and decibels limits are less than normal since it is a private road. It does not complete the beltway and never will. I sit in the city of Arvada and JPPHA Board meetings as we are systematically told no to our limited requests, just to line the pockets of the city of Arvada, Broomfield and Jefferson County.

This is not democracy. The road makes no sense, but if it is to be built – it has to be safe and it has to be in keeping with our beautiful community.

Envisioning a goal is often step one

I

believe I’ve mentioned before that my son, now age 12, spends a lot of time watching YouTube videos. And many of them are of the useless, brainless entertainment variety. And that’s okay — frankly, they’re probably no different, no better HITTING or no worse than anything that’s on HOME the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon these days.

But a lot of what he’s been watching lately is of a completely different variety. For about a year now, he’s been watching a lot of videos of Michael Alcorn soccer players doing crazy trick shots and little skill things. And then he drags me outside to play with him and makes me look silly. It’s really strange — he doesn’t actually practice any of the things he sees, as in, he doesn’t break them down and take them one move at a time or anything. He just tries them.

And he’s developed such a good idea of what it’s supposed to look like that, often, he can recreate the things he sees without a lot of effort.

But it all starts with what it’s supposed to look like.

Come to think of it, I’m pretty sure that’s how my dad taught me to golf. He never once took me to the practice range and talked about my hands and the position at address

and the takeaway and the shoulder turn or any of that. All he did was put golf on the TV every weekend as I was growing up. I got to learn from Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson and Greg Norman and Ken Venturi just what a good golf swing looks like, and that’s the image that’s in my head now. And I’m no scratch golfer or anything, to be sure. But I can step up to the first tee in early May and at least look like I know what I’m doing right away, because that image has been burned into my brain for forty years.

Notice I didn’t say anything about the first green. Putting is a whole different story. A tragedy. Sometimes comedy. Frequently a horror story.

At any rate, this is all about the beginnings of developing vision.

Vision has been one of those clever little buzzwords that people throw around, particularly in the business world, to try to sound thoughtful and strategic. But I find that a lot of people really don’t understand what vision truly is. I think a lot of people start to project what the rewards of success are going to look like, and they confuse that with vision. Thus, the trend a few years ago of building “Vision Boards,” compilations of pictures and images of the spoils of victory.

But I’ve never found that keeping your eye on the reward ever earned anybody the prize. It’s been my experience that the people who enjoy the SEE ALCORN, P22

Test time again for Jeffco students

his month students in our community, across our state, and across the nation will begin the annual rite of passage that is taking standardized assessments. As GUEST a public institution, COLUMN our district is required to administer these assessments under both state and federal law.

It can be rightly argued that the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s system of standardized assessments expanded dramatically after the 2002 Jason Glass landmark federal law, No Child Left Behind, which required at a minimum testing in English Language Arts and Mathematics in grades 3-8 and once in high school. No Child Left Behind also required science

standardized testing once in elementary, middle, and high school.

The name of the federal law has changed (it is now called the Every Student Succeeds Act) but the testing system put forth in No Child Left Behind remains as does the system of ranking schools based on the results.

My message to parents and students when it comes to these assessments is that they should take the test and do their best. This is a good lesson for school and life. Jeffco kids are as smart and capable as any student in the world and these assessments are an opportunity for our schools to show what they can do.

We also recognize that some parents do not wish their students to take these exams. I have directed our principals to create quality learning experiences for students during testing times and we are respectful of parents who have made the decision

that their student will not participate in the exams.

Our state tests measure basic and foundational academic skills and content knowledge against state academic standards. These standards have been benchmarked in comparison with expectations in other states in the U.S. and other countries. The tests have also improved in recent years to require some analysis and synthesis of information, inference, and even writing. This is a good thing!

If your student does well on these exams, you should be proud. Your student is meeting or exceeding a challenging set of academic expectations for their age-range.

However, there are also many students who struggle on these exams and even fear them. As parents and educators in our community, we all have a responsibility to support these students in growing their academic skills.

We should also acknowledge that there are important elements the tests do not measure. Standardized assessments do not get at concepts like creativity and imagination, sustained problem-solving and complex reasoning, adaptation to changing conditions, teamwork and collaboration with others, or being a good citizen and friend.

They do not measure the depth of human talent when it comes to art, music, movement, and language.

They also do not recognize or reward students who are innovators, or who have the passion and spark of an entrepreneur.

While progress toward academic standards is important, these tests measure only a small fraction of what it means to be a quality human being, and arguably not even the most important parts of that.

Basketball fans and non-fans alike come together for one of the biggest sporting events of the year

oug Pruitt’s glass of a dark micobrew, sweating as it rested on a coaster at the Library Co., a bar in Castle Rock, was still half full.

Arms crossed, eyes gazing upward at one of the four TVs behind the bar, Pruitt intently watched a college basketball game between Kansas and Oklahoma.

He had no rooting interest. He was studying, more or less. And looking for a distraction.

“I better get used to this,” Pruitt said, as he smiled and took another sip of beer.

Pruitt is not a big basketball fan.

But he fills out a bracket every March and will follow the games for the satisfaction of earning bragging rights over his brother.

This year, Pruitt said, he won’t hardly be away from the TV. On March 20, one day before the tip-off of the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Pruitt is scheduled to get a vasectomy. He and his wife, Tasha, talked about it for months. Pruitt decided if he was going to couchridden for the better part of a week, he might as well do it while there’s something worth watching.

“I honestly would probably be watching these games if I was sitting at work,” he said. “At least this way I don’t feel bad about it.”

During the first two days of the first round of March Madness on March 21 and 22, Pruitt plans to watch as many games as possible.

The 2019 broadcasting schedule has yet to be released, but last year, games ran nonstop on four different stations — CBS, TNT, TBS and TruTV — from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Pruitt isn’t alone in his dedication to watching the games. In workplaces across the country, one of the most noticeable divots in worker productivity comes during the two-week stretch in March.

Distractions at work Low worker productivity during the tournament two years ago contributed to about $6.3 billion in corporate losses nationwide, according to a 2018 report from WalletHub.com, a personal finance website, Darrin Duber-Smith, a sports marketing expert at Metropolitan State University of Denver, said the massive draw to the tournament can be attributed to a number of factors. he said, it comes down to fans’ affinity for the sport and how they identify with universities playing in the tournament.

“Every school has a basketball program. They might not have football or lacrosse, but basketball is something that is ubiquitous,” Duber-Smith said. “It’s a culturally significant event. It happens every year and at the same time every year, and if you’re not into it, you’re going to be touched by it in some way.”

Between the men’s and women’s Division I tournaments and tournaments at other levels of competition, there will be hundreds of games played during March Madness.

“You have something for literally everybody,” Duber-Smith said.

Peter Craig, of Parker, a University of Kansas alumnus, said during March Madness he wears two hats: one as a raving Jayhawks fan, hoping his alma mater wins it all every year, and one as a fan of the bracket.

“It’s close, but I’d say my team is bigger than my bracket,” Craig said. “Every year, I always hope for a perfect bracket — everyone does — but in the end it’s just exciting to have that possibility. That’s why we love to watch sports anyway.”

“It’s really easy to turn this story into something out of our current news cycle,” said Neil Truglio, director of the Benchmark Theatre’s production of ‘1984.’ “But I wanted to respect world that Clarke Reader Orwell and playwrights (Robert) Icke and (Duncan) Macmillan created, and audience will fill in the blanks themselves.

The regional premiere of “1984” runs at Benchmark, 1560 Teller St. in Lakewood, from March 15 through April 13. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings and 6 p.m. on Sunday. Additional performances on Thursday March 21 and 28 and April 4 and 11.

Set in a dystopian future, the show follows aspiring diarist Winston (Sean Scrutchins) as he attempts to make a life for himself under the totalitarian rule of the Party.

Cast-wise, the show is the biggest the company has tackled yet and bringing the characters and oppressive technology to life creates an immersive and difficult experience for audiences.

“Seeing this show in a bigger theater gives audiences a reason to be removed from what’s happening, especially if they’re sitting far enough back,” Truglio said. “As a director, I want to lean into the intimate space of Benchmark and bring the audience in.”

A lot happens in the play’s relatively short 95-minute run time, and audiences should prepare themselves for a production that is both challenging and thought-provoking.

“This is not a casual theatre going experience. It asks you to engage and be willing to go there with characters,” Truglio said. “Benchmark’s whole mission to keep the conversation going. And a play like “1984” will spark conversations.”

More than 97 million people tuned in to watch the 2018 NCAA Tournament from the First Four to the Final Four rounds, according to NCAA.com.

The American Gaming Association, a casino gaming interest group, estimated more than 40 million people participated and filled out a total of 70 million brackets in 2018.

The madness that surrounds March reaches beyond the actual games. There’s the game within the game — bracket pools and gambling — and the upsets. Duber-Smith called it a “gambling orgy.”

But also, Duber-Smith said, the underdog mentality is something the casual fan can relate to, while the more invested fan will watch either supporting their bracket or their alma mater.

“Casual fans come in because it’s the idea of America loves an underdog, and there’s always lots of underdogs in the tournament,” Duber-Smith said. “I don’t think there’s anything more American than that.”

GOLDEN — Good things can happen on the baseball field when you simply put the ball in play.

That statement proved to be the endgame motto for Golden in its home and season opener Saturday, March 9, against Elizabeth. Things looked pretty bleak for the Demons after a two-out, two-run double by Elizabeth sophomore Sage Ferguson gave the Cardinals a 9-6 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.

Despite trailing since the third inning and needing a late-inning rally to pull out a victory, Golden came through with a four-run bottom of the seventh inning to grab a dramatic 10-9 win.

“It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take what we can get,” Golden junior Ben McLaughlin said moments after the walk-off victory.

Seth Kenner, James Douthit and McLaughlin got things going in the bottom of the seventh inning with three consecutive hits to start the rally. Douthit’s double drove in Ken-

ner and McLaughlin’s double scored Douthit to trim Elizabeth’s lead to 9-8.

“We were striking out early in the game, but we were able to put things together and when you put the ball into play good things happen,” said McLaughlin, who finished with three hits and scored four times.

Junior Zane Covey drove in the game-tying run with a foul ball down the left field line that was caught, but McLaughlin tagged up and scored from third base. The bottom half of the lineup got things going with the bases cleared and no outs.

Junior Conrad Holmes was hit in the helmet with a pitch to get on base. Sophomore Ty Howe grounded to shortstop, but the Cardinals committed an error to keep the inning alive.

“We didn’t take advantage of some situations early in the game,” Golden coach Jackie McBroom said.

No, I’m obviously not referring to the late legendary former North Carolina basketball coach who captured two NCAA titles with the Tar Heels, one gold medal as a coach with the U.S. Olympic team and one national crown as a player at Kansas.

The Dean Smith I am citing lives in Lone Tree with his wife, Priscilla, who on Feb. 24 OVERTIME won the national and world indoor rowing championships for his age group.

Smith will be 93 years old in June.

Priscilla says when the couple would to go out for dinner in the Jim Benton southeast — when the basketball coach was still alive — they would always get the best table. Then she would have to admit that her husband was not that Dean Smith.

But the Dean Smith from Lone Tree doesn’t take a back seat with his accomplishments.

He has a sizeable wall display with ribbons, gold medals, hammer awards and a large picture that exposes him as a world-class track, cycling and rowing athlete. And the ribbons and medals were just the ones he has won since he turned 80.

Smith, who went to high school in Canton, Illinois, and to college at Bradley University, also in Illinois, was inducted into the Bradley Hall of Fame where he set a school record of 4:23.3 for the mile run.

“I was in high school and not good enough to play basketball,” said Smith. “Running I could do, so I started running. Coach said, ‘I want you on the team.’ I did cycling through the ages. My knees gave out when I was about 73. The doctor told me if I kept running I was going to have to have them replaced. I liked the original ones.

“So I was looking for something else and this buddy of mine found this rowing machine. I tried it and it didn’t bother my knees, so I said, ‘This is it.’ I could really compete and get serious about it.”

Two months after he started indoor rowing, he won a championship in Boston.

Between 1974-1990, he won eight U.S. age group 880-meter championships and four Master’s World championships. He set a world record with a time of 2:03.5 in the 800 meters at the age of 53 in Hanover, Germany.

I have had the game since the late 1970s, and played a lot of backgammon through the 1980s. But the case has been in the basement for decades, until mid-October when I asked, “Do you know how to play?”

She said, “Yes.” However, she had a few phony Ohio rules that had to go, but only after I obtained notarized exclusions from the International Association.

Jennifer is a stickler.

We both have had winning streaks, and I always attribute mine to karma, and specifically to a life of kindness and generosity.

It was better late than never for freshman Ethan Lewis. While the freshman struggled at the plate striking out in his first three at-bats, Lewis came through with a flare over the second baseman with two outs in the seventh inning.

Elizabeth’s right fielder had a beat on the fly ball, but it was dropped and pinch-runner Jackson Philleo scored from second base to give the Demons the dramatic 10-9 victory.

“I know we didn’t necessarily played our best baseball, but getting a ‘W’ out of it makes me happy,” said McBroom, who liked what he saw from a pretty inexperience team when it comes to varsity playing time.

McBroom returned just a couple of

players with a lot of varsity playing time.

Lewis pitched the final two innings for the Demons to pick up the victory.

McLaughlin went the first five innings on the mound.

“He (McLaughlin) is going to be our guy on the mound. He knows what he is going out there,” McBroom said. “He is going to be big at the plate. He is a good baseball player.”

Elizabeth had to swallow the tough loss despite a great pitching effort from senior lefty ace Tyler Richardson, who went the first four inning with six strikeouts. Senior Casey Berndt showed off his power with a three-run opposite field home run off of McLaughlin in the Cardinals’ five-run third inning.

20 year prison sentence for string of King Soopers robberies STAFF REPORT

Two men appeared in Jefferson County court March 8, where they were sentenced for a string of robberies at King Soopers stores in Lakewood and Arvada.

Valentin Justin Arrastia, 37, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for 11 robberies at three different stores in Lakewood and Arvada between July 2017 and January 2018.

Arrastia robbed two Lakewood King Soopers stores a total of nine times during

that six-month period. He robbed one store in Arvada twice. In each of the robberies, Arrastia would approach the service desk and put a note on the counter demanding Y TOleUtsR money and announcing the robbery.
