Arvadan inducted into Colorado Master’s Running Association Hall of Fame 20 marathons, 10 years I’ve been a runner a good share of my life. In high school, I ran the halfmile and the mile at a small school in Iowa. When I got in my late thirties, I started training for marathon. I did run 20 marathons in a period of 10 years, from when I was 37 to when I was 46. Now, I’m 82. My last was in Boston in 1984 and my best was three hours, one minute. Because of my hip I did quit running, so I just do a lot of walking now. In my later fifties, I got more in love with trail-running in the mountains, and I did snow-shoe races in my sixties and seventies.

Colorado Master’s Running and Racewalking Association I joined a long time ago in the 1970s, took a break and then really joined again in the 1990s. I was president for a few years and I wrote feature articles for their monthly publication.

Ken Simons, who moved to Arvada almost 60 years ago, stands with awards from previous races, including an award on the left, commemorating the 82-year-old’s induction into the Colorado Masters Running Association Hall of Fame.

I believe strongly in environmental causes and started a green club at our church (Arvada United Methodist Church). My wife Shirley and I walk together in the mornings; she’s run a lot of races, too and she’s run a marathon. I got her into running and then she eventually convinced me to take up golf.

Why run I knew other people ran marathons, so it was just the challenge of wanting to do it. I think it’s important for people to exercise. A benefit of running is, you’re maybe not as concerned about other things that may bother you. Running is not complicated. You can do it any place.

State now has ability to test for COVID-19 STAFF REPORT

The State Laboratory at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment can now test for COVID-19 — the technical name for novel coronavirus. Testing had previously been done only by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a news release.

The test will be used for people who meet the criteria for COVID-19 testing only; it is not available to the general public.

With staffing and equipment resources, the state lab has the capacity to test up to 160 samples per day, assuming test kits from the CDC are continuously available. Turnaround time for results is expected to be within 24 hours of specimen receipt at the state laboratory.

“Being able to confirm or rule out cases of COVID-19 at the state level allows us to be more nimble in responding to and controlling this disease if it occurs in Colorado,” State Laboratory Director Scott Bookman said in the news release. “The time frame for testing cases should be quicker than ever.”

In Colorado, the public health officials may decide that a patient merits testing if: • He or she has a fever or signs/symptoms of lower respiratory illness, such as cough or shortness of breath, and has been in close contact with someone confirmed with COVID-19 within 14

days of when symptoms started.

• He or she has a fever and signs/ symptoms of lower respiratory illness (and other diagnoses such as influenza have been ruled out), and the patient recently traveled to parts of the world where infection rates are high or community spread is occurring, within 14 days of when symptoms started.

• He or she has a fever with severe lower respiratory illness that requires hospitalization and other diagnoses such as influenza have been ruled out.

This guidance varies slightly from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the state lab has capacity, Colorado will continue to consider testing for individuals who are not hospitalized to identify patients who have traveled to affected areas and who have less severe disease.

If a medical provider thinks a patient may have COVID-19, the provider will contact the state or a local public health department for instructions on testing. If a patient needs to be tested, the medical provider will collect a specimen from the patient’s nose and throat and send the samples to the state lab. Public health agencies will make the final decision about testing for COVID-19 virus.

The collaboration between public health, health care providers, and other agencies to prepare for the disease in Colorado is ongoing. The state will continue to investigate and test possible cases and provide timely updates about the situation.

What Does ‘Open and Transparent’ Look Like When Talking About Real Estate?

For some reason I’ve never understood, most listing agents believe that they should not be open and transparent with buyers’ agents regarding the disclosure of offers in hand when there’s a bidding war for their listing. At Golden Real Estate, we believe in being open . and transparent. Here’s what that looks like.

Rule number one is to always tell the truth. We never mislead a colleague about offers in hand.

If we don’t have competing offers, we’ll never represent that we do. This is a matter of ethics.

The Realtor Code of Ethics, to which every Realtor swears allegiance, requires no misrepresentation about anything, whether it’s how successful we are or whether we have competing offers.

Agents from other brokerages, however, typically won’t disclose the price or nature of the offers they have for their a listings. At Golden Real Estate, we not only disclose the price and terms of offers received, but we will let each agent know if their offer is surpassed by a better offer. We don’t want any buyer or their agent to have the experience of being blindsided.

This is good for both buyer and seller, and buyers’ agents invariably thank me when I explain this policy. After all, how would you as a buyer like to learn later that if you had only offered $2,000 more (which you were willing to do), you would have won that bidding war?

Similarly, how would you as a seller, like to learn that you could have gotten $2,000 more for your house?

Although this process essentially operates like an auction, where everyone in the room knows what they’re bidding against and chooses on their own when to drop out of the bidding, it doesn’t mean that we let the bidding go on forever.

After the buyers have raised their bids twice, it’s time to ask for a final bid, without offering to return if it’s not the winning bid. While this is our policy, the seller, of course, is the final authority on how long to continue the back and forth.

By that time, however, they tend to be quite happy with the highest bid and agree to cut it off. To do otherwise risks antagonizing the buyers and their agents.

happy that we were transparent enough that they felt they had a fair chance to win a coveted listing.

This approach takes more work on our part than doing what other agents typically do when multiple offer situations arise, which is to inform agents that they have multiple offers and ask buyers’ agents to submit their “highest and best.”

Then the seller accepts the best offer and other buyers are upset and angry that they weren’t allowed to raise their offer.

We feel, however, that our approach is not only fairer to buyers’ agents but also produces the best price for our sellers. We wish that other listing agents would adopt this practice.

Transparency, however, does not extend to disclosing the price at which a home is under contract prior to closing.

The reason for that is that if the contract falls, we don’t want the next buyer to know what the seller was willing to ac-

cept. That’s because we have an ethical and legal obligation to work in our seller’s best interest, not our own.

The only time I would disclose the price at which one of my listings is under contract is when an appraiser needing comps calls me. If we are cleared to close — past inspection, appraisal and other contingencies — I’m willing to help that appraiser know the price so he can do his or her job in appraising a comparable listing for a different seller.

Thanks to this practice, Golden Real Estate has a better-than-average track record when it comes to closing price vs. listing price. In some cases this has resulted in our sellers netting their full listing price even after subtracting commissions and the other costs of selling.

Students ask council to invest in Lake Arbor project $10,000 ask would target excess phosphates in water

With its upcoming plans to dredge Lake Arbor and remove excess sediment, the city is considering working a $10,000 proposal into the mix after the proposal’s authors — a sixth-grade class from Moore Middle School — presented to the council March 2.

The students have worked on the proposal in their science class throughout the school year. Teacher Alicia Asmus put the project together after receiving a question from student Zach Ford, who noticed he could not see any fish in the lake this summer.

During that time, the city posted signs warning passersby to stay out of the water because of high levels of bluegreen algae, which can cause sickness in humans and can be fatal to animals.

showed the lake water tested for phosphates as high as 4 ppm, as opposed to the standard range of 0.005 to 0.05 ppm. Samples tested by Arvada Water also showed high phosphates at a range from

0.06 to 0.19 ppm.

Based on research and discussions with scientists from around the state, the students believe the elevated phosphates have been caused by fertilizers and wastewater contaminating the lake, they said.

“We need to do something about it,” said student Walker Munoz. “It is stopping recreational activity at the lake and we are the cause of this problem.”

After exploring three potential solutions, the class came to city council with its suggestion to build devices for the lake called floating wetlands.

The man-made rafts would float in the lake and provide a place for plants to grow, which in turn would absorb phosphate out of the water, Charles said.

With the $10,000 provided by the city, the students would build the devices and set them up. After one year, the group would test the water again to determine if the solution has been effective and in the third year, could create additional wetlands, restock fish and explore employing the solution at other polluted lakes.

School district seeking feedback with budget reductions possible At first budget meeting, board says it will prioritize teacher pay

During an initial 2020-2021 budget presentation at the March 5 Board of Education meeting, board members were asked to name one or two budget priorities they have for this year. The four present board members named the same priority at the top of their lists: Teacher compensation.

“There are other elevated priorities out there that have been lifted up over time,” said board president Susan Harmon, but this year, “I think priorities I have heard would be teacher compensation.” All of the board members agreed, save board member Ron Mitchell, who was absent.

The budget won’t be finalized until the summer, with the initial March meeting a chance for staff to give the board a general overview of available funds. In turn, board members provided direction on what they’d like to see in the budget.

This year, the board has about $17.6 million to spend, though the figure could vary, possibly by millions, depending on the state budget, said district chief financial officer Kathleen Askelson.

Meanwhile, for staff members to

receive compensation increases based on the steps and lanes salary schedule, the district would need about $17 million — leaving almost no room for other new spending items.

Another option — to adjust employee salaries by 1% for the cost of living — would require about $6 million, said Superintendent Jason Glass.

However, board members said they also hope to prioritize the recommendations of the District Accountability Committee, made up of parents, community members and district staff. The committee’s recommendations included increasing Student-Based Budgeting (SBB) dollars to allow each school in Jeffco to hire one more teacher.

The proposal would cost about $16 million, while an alternative proposal — for each school to hire one new paraprofessional, or classroom aide — would cost about $2 million.

Rupert advocated for exploring the alternative option as a way of “getting a little more assistance in the classroom (and) doing it in a way that might still stay within our budget.”

Glass added the district has already prepared a possible group of budget reductions, resulting in an extra $2.1 million. If the board chose to make every cut listed, it would have $19.7 million to spend instead of the $17.6 million.

“They (the reductions) are not painless,” Glass said, “but they are the things we think we could cut and it wouldn’t be severely disruptive to our strategic plan and core operations.”

Askelson and budget director Nicole Stewart said the district plans to open a community survey at some point in the week of March 9, asking Jeffco community members what they would like prioritized in the budget.

Jeffco also plans to schedule two in-person budget forums in April to collect the same information.

Board members said they planned to make their decisions based on this feedback, while also considering effects of the proposed cuts.

“Many of these things that we are contemplating are actually money-saving measures,” such as an adviser who oversees the employee exit process to avoid legal claims, Rupert said. “I want to be really careful in considering these things.” applauded the practicality of the students’ work.

“This is a great learning tool in solving actual problems. I appreciate you all for being a part of this,” she said.

Mayor Marc Williams also praised the project.

“I see an opportunity, if what you’re proposing works, that we ought to be looking at using in some of our other parks,” he said. “You might have come up with a very good solution for us.”

Arvada businesses working to solve top local challenges Workforce, healthcare and marketing top 3 issues on survey

When catering company Bread Winners opened its restaurant in Olde Town about six years ago, the team was prepared for challenges to come with the transition. Of those challenges, however, one quickly began to stand out: “It was very hard to find good employees that would stay,” said Devon Trudell, who owns the restaurant with his family at 7311 Grandview Ave. “Only half of our staff really wanted to be here.”

For the restaurant, the problem’s main solution was time — more than four years, Trudell estimated, which the owners spent building a skilled, committed staff.

“We’ve got good people in here and we’ve been able to hold onto those people, pick up a few more and build it,” Trudell said. “It’s just happened over the course of time.”

According to the Arvada Chamber of Commerce’s 2019 Business Challenges Survey, Bread Winners is part of a majority. More than 60% of about 50 participating businesses said

For some, like the Trudells, business challenges sometimes resolve with time. The challenges also ebb and flow, Welch said. A skilled workforce has consistently been Arvada’s top struggle, but over the last year, fewer businesses have reported attainable housing as an issue, while more have reported health care costs, she said.

When it comes to attainable housing, “there’s been more conversations locally,” perhaps leading business-

owners to feel the problem is in the midst of being addressed, she said.

Meanwhile, “what we found is a lot of employers weren’t providing health care because of the cost.”

More than 30% of participating businesses said health care costs were a challenge. Another top difficulty, marketing, was reported by almost 40%.

Working on solutions These challenges aren’t exclusive to Arvada. The struggle to find skilled employees, for instance, is felt statewide; according to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment’s

2018 Skills Report. Some 33.5% of state employers say their job applicants do not have the occupational skills needed for the position, and 22.6% say their job applicants do not have needed interpersonal skills.

Arvada High hopes to address this skills gap by asking students to complete job shadowings and internships, allowing the students to acquire more skills before entering the workforce.

The high school is a member of the Arvada Chamber, and has expanded its efforts by partnering with fellow chamber members, such as Nicole Bendig, owner of Snarky Sweet Cake Chick.

The cake artist hosts students for days of job shadowing, which, in addition to cake decorating demonstrations and hands-on practice, teaches the high schoolers needed business skills, like bookkeeping and website upkeep.

“When students shadow with me, they’re getting the perspective of a true solopreneur,” Bendig said. “It’s been a really great experience. I didn’t realize how impactful the kids would be on me.”

The chamber also launched the Arvada Works Talent Pipeline Program in 2018 — providing a forum for employers and community members to learn from each other — and the online Arvada Career Hub this year, on SEE CHALLENGES, P7

which local businesses can list internships, job shadowings and paid jobs.

In the meantime, it’s worked to address members’ health care concerns by establishing the Arvada Healthcare Alliance. There are 30 chamber members currently piloting the program.

The chamber has also partnered with Paladina Health to help employers provide primary care coverage to their employees at a lower rate.

“We really thought hard about what is our role in all of this,” Welch said.

“From at least my network, we’re the first chamber to tackle health care in this way.”

Further chamber initiatives to meet business challenges include marketing shout-outs on social media and in newsletters, and an upcoming Marketing Education Series this spring to

teach businesses advertising techniques.

As for other marketing solutions, strategies vary from one businessowner to the next.

Bendig and Courtney Gregory, who owns the Olde Town Flower Shoppe at 7505 Grandview Ave., found success marketing to other members through chamber events. Bendig often bakes cakes for chamber ribbon-cuttings while Gregory provides floral arrangements.

“That’s ideal because people get to see what you do in person,” Gregory said. “The chamber is great at connecting business to each other and trying to get them working together.”

Meanwhile, for Bread Winners, one of the most helpful marketing tools has simply been its location in Olde Town Arvada.

Student and teacher ideas awarded from Jeffco Innovation Fund Ideas provide solutions for local schools

Last October, two Lakewood-based students each reached out to the school district with plans to get their peers involved in addressing climate change.

At Lakewood High School, freshman Leigh Schmidt was working to build a social media presence for Project 5 Billion, an account asking followers to make lifestyle changes for the good of the environment.

At Hutchinson Elementary, Traeger Jones and his father, Eric, envisioned a Climate Action Club, through which the school’s third, fourth and fifth graders could “share how we feel about the climate and go outside and enjoy,” said Jones, a fourth-grader.

With finances from the district’s Innovation Acceleration Fund, both students will put their ideas into action. For the first time this year, students could apply to be a recipient of the fund, which was created by Jeffco Public Schools in 2017.

Through the program, a total of about $1 million was awarded to 26 ideas brainstormed by local teachers and students. The district encouraged applicants to pitch ideas that transformed learning, tackling old concepts

Claire Odorico, teacher sponsor for Jones’s project, praised the project for its uniqueness. Having worked in multiple school districts, she said she has never seen a district put on a similar funding initiative for students.

The fund allows “kids to learn in an authentic way and invests in projects designed to make the community better,” she said.

“If someone didn’t do this hard work of creating the innovation grant, nothing would have changed. I would never have gotten this money any other way,” said Judy Sims, digital teacher librarian at Pomona High School. Her idea saw Pomona receive funding to update some of the school’s library furniture, which dates back to 1973.

Included among the updates were casters and brackets for tables so students can more easily work together.

enough to replace everything, but it’s enough to give us ideas of how we can make the 1973 furniture work.”

Meanwhile, at Arvada High School, finding innovative solutions has come in the form of DrumFIT, a workout program to get students active in a new way.

The school has used its grant money to purchase 45 DrumFIT yoga balls and drumsticks, as well as subscriptions to workout videos, which instruct students how to use the equipment to complete rhythm-based workouts.

PE teacher Jamie Thorson hopes DrumFIT will offer an alternative to classic workouts, which do not always engage students or offer the same social benefits as the new workout, she said.

“It’s so fast-moving, they can’t focus on anything else, and it’s really hard to be doing it and not be smiling,” she said.

Assistant principal Jeremy Jensen added that the school intends to use the equipment not only for PE classes, but also for any class, as students often need a break throughout the school’s 90-minute class periods.

In Lakewood, the students raising climate change awareness also already have plans for their new resources.

Schmidt and her staff sponsor, Creighton Middle School teacher Jenny Boehlke, hope to increase their project’s social media presence. They

have budgeted to spend the grant on new technology, such as graphic design programs, to help them better present the project.

Project 5 Billion has more than a collective 200 followers through its Facebook and Twitter handles — @ p5billion — and its Instagram account, @project5billion.

Many of those followers live in the Lakewood and Jefferson County areas, with Schmidt’s classmates often telling her they are following the page, she said.

“They’ll tell me they’re doing the challenges and how it’s going,” she said.

The goal is to build an even stronger presence in the school district.

“The end result is that we want a ripple effect” across the world, Boehlke said.

Schmidt added they plan to take groups of students from Lakewood High School and other Jeffco schools to downtown rallies and events related to climate change.

Jones is also doing what he can at Hutchinson Elementary, preparing to launch the club with the new funds, which will go toward building emergency preparedness kits for participants — including food, water and extra clothing. Participants will learn how to help the climate and what to do in a climate-related emergency.

“It’s going to help people understand how we need to help the Earth,” Traeger Jones said.

His father will help oversee the club, but “it’s student-driven,” he said.

“This is a significant investment by the district into its students.”

Day of Action means an ‘unexpected change’ in Jeffco schedule Teachers to ask lawmakers for education funding and educator pay

Jefferson County Public Schools will be one of six districts closing Thursday, March 19, as thousands of Colorado educators head to the Capitol for the Day of Action, hosted by the Colorado Education Association (CEA).

Educators plan to rally at the Capitol, followed by a morning speaking to legislators, said Amie Baca-Oehlert, CEA president. The association is asking for an increase to education funding and teacher pay.

“We want an opportunity for legislators to hear from educators how low pay impacts them individually,” she said.

Some Jefferson County teachers, like Sydney Slifka at Lakewood’s Westgate Elementary School, say every day, they feel the effects of what they believe to be a funding crisis. Slifka teaches fifth grade, makes and sells jewelry, tutors and coaches, “and I still can’t afford a home in the county I live in,” she said.

“I have had several friends leave the field because they can make more money with less work” in another

profession, she said. “We’re not funding our schools, which is affecting our kids. While Colorado’s economy is booming, our schools are starving.”

Many educators have said a particular concern is that a lack of funding has left students without adequate mental health support, Baca-Oehlert added.

On Feb. 26, Jeffco Public Schools announced upcoming closures, saying “the current number of teaching staff who are submitting an absence has moved beyond the maximum number of absences that can be covered by our guest teachers.”

Extracurricular activities are not canceled, although specific schools may choose to cancel certain activities, the announcement said. All schools will open as scheduled on Friday, March 20.

“We understand that this unexpected change is inconvenient for families,” the announcement said.

“We made this decision as soon as we reached the threshold where we could not reasonably fill the anticipated absences. Please know we exhausted all resources before deciding to cancel school for students.”

Staff members taking the day off for the Day of Action must use a personal day, as opposed to a sick day.

The mass absence isn’t in violation of the teachers’ or support professionals’ unions negotiated requirements with the district, and “as of this time,

Students will not have to make up the school day unless the district closes for additional snow days this year.

Teachers who plan on attending the Day of Action widely agree that the day is a chance to show they value students by taking a personal day to fight for funding.

However, some community members, like Dean Schulze, a parent of an Arvada West student, say the educators’ methods are against taxpayers’ best interest.

“How much are we paying to have teachers engaging in a work stoppage lobby us for higher taxes?” Schulze wrote in an email to CCM. “I find this work stoppage outrageous. Should all government employees be able to take a day off of work to lobby for more money?

Further, the closure could present some immediate obstacles for families. Particularly, some parents may find themselves in need of supervision for their children that day, said Shawna Fritzler, president of the Jeffco PTA. For many of them, the only option may be to seek out a childcare provider and take on the additional cost.

For Arvada resident Sarah Masi, who has three children attending Golden’s Free Horizon Montessori, those costs add up quickly. Masi has enrolled all three of her children in the Apex camp, as she and her husband both work full-time.

“I felt very grateful they offered that.

It’s a great option,” she said. However, even after a discount for families who enroll multiple children in the camp, “I’m paying more in childcare that day than I will get from my job.”

On the one hand, the closure has sparked an unexpected expense, and she doesn’t want her children to miss out on educational time, she said.

On the other, “I understand that teachers here are in a tough spot,” she said.

Meanwhile, others in the area have turned to local childcare providers.

School kitchen workers file class SCHEDULE action grievance against Jeffco FROM PAGE 10

Employees claim understaffing, product quality has hurt food programs

Four years ago, Andrea Cisneros accepted a position as the kitchen manager at West Woods Elementary School in Arvada. She was told by those who hired her that, to maintain the school’s staff — a staff of five, including herself — she would need to promote high levels of participation in the school’s breakfast, lunch and a la carte programs.

And she has. When she tells kitchen workers from other schools how many West Woods students participate — up to 300 students purchase lunch on pizza day, she said — they often think they’ve heard her wrong.

Audrey Kesler, an hourly kitchen worker at Wheat Ridge High School, says those numbers rival high school participation.

But it hasn’t saved Cisneros’ staff in the way she’d originally hoped. Her numbers have dropped from a staff of five to a staff of two, leaving her with only one other employee in the kitchen every day.

“I was promised if I made these sales, I wouldn’t lose my staff,” she said. And as her staff has dwindled, she’s found herself physically exhausted.

“There’s no compensation for my shoulders. There’s no compensation for my wrists,” she said. “They have whittled me down to nothing and expect me to bring their sales up for them.”

The week of Feb. 17, the Jeffco Schools Food Service Association filed a class action grievance against Jeffco’s Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), claiming that FNS has not met expectations outlined in the groups’ negotiated agreement.

The association, affiliated with support professionals’ union JESPA (Jeffco Education Support Professionals Association), negotiates an agreement on food service working conditions each year.

The grievance mentions an array of topics, but workers’ main concern is what they perceive as widespread understaffing in kitchens across the district. Many of the kitchen workers believe this understaffing is fueled by food quality issues, as drops in lunch sales can lead to a smaller budget and staffing cuts.

Rates for childcare providers vary throughout the area, with some Jefferson County daycares charging an estimated cost of $40, $60, $65 or $75 for one day, according to care.com, a childcare listing site.

“For families who need to coordinate daycare, that can be difficult,” Fritzler said, “but surely, everyone can join together” to provide solutions.

She added that, while the PTA

“I can’t tell you the number of (student) mental health issues I’ve run into” because of budget cuts, she said. “We have to do something because it’s negatively impacted our kids.”

The March 19 date was chosen because many districts will be on Spring Break and because it falls right before state legislators will finalize their budget.

“Our first march, it was after the budget was decided for our state.

It wasn’t immediately actionable.

This year, it’s actionable,” Slifka said. “We’re not walking out on our students; we’re walking for our students.”

Time to check in on our collective golf game

hen I was a kid, my first job was as a caddy at Green Gables Country Club. It wasn’t a HITTING great job — really early mornings, all HOME day in the hot sun, good chance you’d show up for work and not make any money.

But, it was the only job I could do as a 12year old, and it gave me access to free golf.

So … win for me.

One year, Green Michael Alcorn Gables hosted an event of the senior PGA tour, so I got to hang out and watch some of the professionals practice. And, wow. There was one player

good player and plays quite a bit, from 100 yards, expects to be putting every time, with maybe half of those inside 10 feet; I’m usually relatively happy if I can just find my ball.

The point is, the better you are at something, the more reliable your skills, the smaller the margin of error you allow yourself.

You’re going to hear a lot about margin of error for the next eight months, mostly in the context of political polls.

Who’s ahead in Michigan, who’s behind in Arizona, which issues are likely to win on the ballot. And all of those polls are going to have margins of error attached to them. Without diving into the deep statistical minutiae, all you have to know is that the smaller the margin of error, the more reliable the result.

But margins of error apply to almost

— I don’t remember who — who would go to the chipping green and set a small bucket on the green. Then, he would move out to 25 yards and send a few dozen balls towards the bucket. Narcissism is defined as a “disorder” and not an attribute to be admired. It is generally defined as a person who exaggerates his achievements and talents, fantasizes about his power, brilliance or beauty, requires constant admiration, and takes advantage of others while behaving arrogantly.

To admire Trump for his narcissism must surely mean that there must be a gross misunderstanding of what narcissism actually means or that, definition aside, we ought to praise one of the most seriously flawed presidents in the history of the United States, good economy or not.

treat my asthma and an EpiPen, as I’m severely allergic to bees. These treatments keep me safe in emergency health situations.

I’m concerned my prescriptions might be compromised by a bill known as SB 119, which passed the Colorado House this past week.

If this bill were to become law, it would allow for the importation of medications and treatments from foreign countries outside of Canada or the United States.

The idea of international drug importation is aimed at making drugs more affordable in Colorado.

I acknowledge these good intentions, but I am extremely concerned about the implications for patients and public health in our state.

The United States has a comprehensive drug approval process, and our medicines are widely regarded as the safest in the world. Importing them from other countries undermines this process, potentially jeopardizing the confidence patients like me need to have in the safety and integrity of our medicines.

When I pick up my prescriptions at the pharmacy counter, I never question the process. If this bill goes into effect, how am I to know where my medicines originated or whether they’re safe? These prescriptions are meant to treat

every other walk of life, as well. A naturally intelligent student can drift off a little bit during studying or be a little distracted during a test, and still perform well; a student with fewer gifts needs to be more consistently attentive and focused, because they have a smaller margin for error. An athlete who is exceptionally fast or has great reactions can find themselves a little bit out of position and still make the play; an athlete without those natural abilities has to always put themselves in the right place, because they have a smaller margin for error.

Artists such as Durer, Rembrandt, da Vinci, Monet, Picasso and Pollock have inspired art students and audiences, and their sublime efforts have filled art museums around the world, including our own Denver Art Museum, the Kirkland Museum and the Museum of

Outdoor Arts.

While some artists, particularly the once-a-week variety that is fascinated by fruit and landscapes, will continue to paint on squares and rectangles, their numbers will dwindle to next to nothing.

This will have a major impact on future art exhibitions, on art schools, on art museums and on vendors — especially those who currently manufacture pre-made canvases.

One day, finding a canvas to paint on will be as difficult as finding a typewriter ribbon is now.

None of this means the end of art.

There’s simply a new kid on the block.

It’s called “immersion art.” Immersion art is similar to entering a fun house at a cheap carnival where things seem to fall off the walls, endanger viewers and provide almost hallucinogenic images.

It’s happening and, most importantly, it’s cool.

Conventional art museum attendance — except for blockbuster exhibitions featuring the work of art history’s Hall of Fame — is in decline, and if the museums don’t convert to immersion spaces, they will be deceased in the water.

Controversial program aims to reduce young children’s risk of drowning

W

ith drowning as a leading cause of death among young children, parents each year seek out the best swim safety classes for their children.

One program in the Denver metro area is so popular among residents that it rivals community recreation centers’ own swimming programs in participation, the rec centers say.

Infant Swimming Resource, or ISR, has conducted more than 8 million self-rescue lessons nationwide since its founding in 1966 and boasts having saved 800 children, according to its website.

In the daily, 10-minute sessions, infants and toddlers are slowly taught to control their breath underwater, roll on their backs and then float if they find themselves unexpectedly in water.

Those old enough to maneuver themselves are trained to find a pool’s wall.

ISR is not meant to replace other swim safety measure and the program encourages practices including constant supervision of children near water, four-sided fencing around pools, self-locking gates and alarms on any entrance to a pool.

The program is not without controversy. The American Academy of Pe-

diatrics has not endorsed ISR because it lacks research, and some worry its methods traumatize children.

Still, parents steadfast in their support of ISR and confident in its ability to save young lives flock to the self-rescue lessons at local recreation centers, private pools and other facilities year-round.

“We are kind of the last measure against drowning,” ISR instructor Julia McDonald said. “If all of those other things fail, we are the thing that will save them if nobody else is around.”

Thankful for ISR Unintentional drowning was the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States, according to 2017 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was the second leading cause of death for children 5 to 9 years old.

Roughly 1,000 children die from drowning each year, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Standing by the pool at the Highlands Ranch Recreation Center at Eastridge, Christy Groza pointed to the exact spot where her 4-year-old daughter Hyacinth slipped and fell in the water two years earlier.

Hyacinth received ISR training when she was younger but had not been to a class in roughly a year when the accident happened. Nonetheless, she did not panic. Instead, she immediately turned on her back and floated until a lifeguard scooped her up, Groza said.

SWIM SAFETY GUIDELINES The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children begin swim lessons at 12 months old, if parents and their pediatrician agree it’s a good fit for the individual child, said Sarah Denny, spokeswoman and lead author on the AAP’s policy statement for drowning prevention.

Research shows that’s the age where swim lessons become effective and can lower the risk of drowning, according to the AAP. Parents are urged to stay vigilant and never leave a child alone at bath time, in wading pools or anytime a child may be near water. Stay within arm’s reach of infants and toddlers.

Still, many drowning deaths occur when children were not expected to be near the water, Denny said.

Pools should be protected by four-sided fencing with self-locking gates. Alarms on entrances to a pool are also encouraged, Denny said. All children should receive swim lessons, and parents too, according to the AAP’s policy statement.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 and it remains within the top 10 leading causes of death for people through the age of 54, according to 2017 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are a variety of swim lessons available in the Denver metro area, at community recreation centers or private companies. Parents can get in the water and learn alongside their infants and toddlers in some classes. There are also small-group classes where parents watch poolside, or private, one-on-one lessons with an instructor.

It will also add about 125 jobs to the area.

“The locals really informed us about what kind of places should set-up here,” Blackwood explained.

“We wanted people to not only have quality food, but authenticity.

And the people we partnered with share that dream.”

Restaurants that will call Junction home include, Big Wave Taco Shop, Bird on a Wire Southern Chick’n, Ebisu Ramen and Sushi (run by Chef Soon Choi, former head chef at Sushi Den), Grind and Grill Burger, Lazo Empanadas, Mr. Miner’s Meat and Cheese, Paciugo Gelato (which already has a popular spot in Lakewood’s Belmar), Pete’s-A-Pie of Denver (providing New Haven-style pizza by the slice and whole), Shawarma Shack and Smok Barbeque.

In a statement provided to Colorado Community Media, Beth Wallace, FNS executive director, and Jeremy West, FNS director of operations, stated that FNS selects which products to serve based on multiple criteria, including nutrition standards, students’ preferences and cost.

“Jeffco Public Schools, specifically our team of an executive chef and dietitian, has worked over the last few years to incorporate student input and variety into our menus,” the statement said The directors’ statement added the organization must adhere to a strict budget but in the 2018-2019 school year, still managed to increase school lunch participation by 1%.

At a Nov. 13 board meeting, Wallace attributed the increase to “great new menu items and listening to feedback.”

The directors had no further comment in regards to staffing.

Despite last year’s 1% increase, staff sizes have dropped throughout the years, making it difficult to “provide the service we are wanting to provide,” said Kathy Grimes, food service manager at Chatfield High School in Littleton.

“We want to be there for the kids, not scrambling around, unable to smile at a kid because we’re too stressed out,” she said. “We’re proud of what we’re doing, but we’re beating our head against the wall every day trying to get

everything done.”

At Stober Elementary in Lakewood, a staff of two runs the entire kitchen, said the school’s kitchen manager, Sharon Talty. She has been told by her supervisor that FNS may further reduce the staff to one person as participation in the school’s food programs has continued to fall.

“I can’t fathom doing this job by myself,” she said. “I always tell people, I get paid for seven hours a day but I essentially work nine to ten. It’s bad now and it’s only going to get worse.”

Already, there are several elementary schools in the district with only one staff member, said Kesler, the association’s food service president.

On the FNS website, the organization states that FNS does not receive district funding and when it turns a profit, the organization invests that revenue back into its services. “(FNS) is committed to serving quality food and providing multiple options for our students,” said the FNS directors’s statement.

Across the board, the district’s food service workers believe in that mission as much as FNS does.

“It’s a meaningful job,” Cisneros said.

But for her and her coworkers, the bottom line is that “my kids don’t like the menu and I don’t have enough staff to bring them through the lines to eat,” she said. “We shouldn’t be held accountable for their failure to staff our kitchens.”

Jefferson County companies that import materials and export products now have a new tool for saving on tariffs, including the high-profile ones currently imposed on China.

On Feb. 20, the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation was notified that its application to establish a Foreign Trade Zone encompassing Jeffco and three neighboring counties was successful.

A Foreign Trade Zone is a geographic area located adjacent to a U.S. port of entry where commercial merchandise receives the same customs treatment it would if it were outside the commerce of the United States.

According to Kristi Pollard, the president and CEO of the nonprofit Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation, a foreign trade zone allows companies to save on tariff costs in two key ways.

First, companies only need to pay the cost of an imported material when it “is taken out of the box and actually put into a product” rather than as soon as it is brought into the U.S. “It helps companies because they are not just going to buy a handful of things at a time, they are going to buy things when they go on sale but it doesn’t necessarily mean they are going to use each of those pieces immediately,” Pollard said. “So it allows them to manage their costs a little bit more effectively.”

The other thing an FTZ allows companies to do is not pay taxes on imported materials if those materials are ultimately going to go into products which will be exported. In that instance, a foreign trade zone operates similarly to a free trade zone.

The point of entry for the new foreign trade zone, which is called foreign trade zone 298, is the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield.

A foreign trade zone can extend to areas located within either 60 miles or a 90-minute drive of the corresponding port of entry, which allows FTZ 298 to include Boulder, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties as well as Jeffco.

Pollard said the county had been interested in establishing a foreign trade zone to increase the competitiveness of its business environment, particularly since Denver is also a foreign trade zone.

“It definitely does help us from a competitive standpoint,” Pollard said. “While we try to work collaboratively with other counties in the state rather than competing with them, not having this tool did restrict us from those companies that had to have this tool. So it does open up new doors for us that we have not had in the past so we are excited we do think it will give us a competitive edge as we move forward.”

Unlike many foreign trade zones, including Denver’s, Foreign Trade Zone 298 operates under an alternative site framework to apply for their facilities to be made part of the zone. Most foreign trade zones are operated under a traditional site framework that means only centralized facilities or warehouses are put of the zone, which means imported items must be stored there rather than at a company’s own facilities.

Pollard said one of the biggest supporters of the effort to establish the trade zone, a process that took more than a year, was Jefferson County Commissioner Libby Szabo.

“We believe that the FTZ is going to give Jefferson County businesses a competitive edge as well as open doors to new businesses looking to relocate to Colorado,” Szabo said. “In this global economy, having this tool puts Jeffco on the map.”

A tale of two caucuses Politics got local at county party events

Like many people, Ghada Wahan says she has always paid more attention to national politics than local ones.

But that’s begun to change recently for Wahan, who said she decided to participate in the Republican Party precinct caucus on March 7, the first step in Colorado’s process for select-

ing candidates for county and state races, because she is becoming more invested in community issues and wanting to have a voice on subjects ranging from roads to education.

However, the Arvada resident says she also has another reason for wanting to participate in the caucus, which will bring together a handful of neighbors to discuss issues and learn about candidates.

“I come from the Middle East and women being involved in politics is not very popular there,” Wahan said.

lde Town is Arvada’s historic and economic heart, with an ambiance and vibrancy that’s next to none. To keep it that way, it’s vital that any developer planning a project here seek community feedback and engage with city officials in an open, constructive way.

Grandview Station – a proposed mixed-use development at the northeast intersection of Grandview Ave. and Vance St. – is no different.

As Grandview Station’s developer, it’s our responsibility to help the community better understand our relationship with the properties in question, our goals for the project and to dispel any rumors.

Those who know us understand the steps we’ve taken to contribute to Olde Town’s authentic fabric. In addition to complying with the City of Arvada’s development guidelines, we’ve held open and transparent meetings with important community stakeholders. While we faced opposition, we also earned the support of many of our neighbors and local business owners.

In 2014 we were first introduced to the properties at 7317 Grandview Ave., 7315 Grandview Ave. and 7318 W. 57th St. The properties, which were rentals at the time, appeared to suffer from extensive deferred maintenance, but we first needed to evaluate their condition before planning our next steps.

After placing them under contract, we hired forensic engineering firms who, after thorough reviews, determined that it would be cost prohibitive to convert these structures from residential to commercial use.

Systems that can’t be seen – foundations, roof structures and floor framing – were in disrepair. General Contractor’s cost estimates verified this.

to further comply with the Design Guidelines for Olde Town. In August 2019, we received unanimous support from the Design Review Committee, recommending approval of the project with justifiable waivers.

Three months later, we received unanimous support from Planning Commission.

Because these analyses concluded that it was not economically viable to rehabilitate the properties, we needed to understand what type of building should be considered if the site were to be redeveloped.

We began by speaking with neighbors, business owners, Olde Town advocacy groups and others with a vested interest in the community. We studied the governing documents for the area, including the Land Development Code, the Comprehensive Plan and the Design Guidelines for Olde Town. We studied advisory reports including the Arvada Transit Framework Plan and the Olde Town Arvada Retail and Vibrancy Study. It was clear that redevelopment requirements included a mixed-use building with “higher density” due to its proximity to the commuter rail station.

Our vision included for-sale housing. We were confident that by listing the units for sale rather than for lease, we’d attract buyers that would take pride in their homes and contribute to the safety and cleanliness of the community. We developed a preliminary concept – not

unlike our current design – and had initial conversations with city staff and several Councilmembers.

In 2015 we purchased 7317 Grandview Ave. but fell out of contract with 7315 Grandview Ave. and 7318 W. 57th St. The latter two properties were then listed for sale on the MLS for approximately 18 months.

No parties came forward with any serious proposals to restore or redevelop these properties. During that time, they continued to decay.

In 2018 we purchased 7315 Grandview Ave. and 7318 W. 57th St. and began our formal application process for redevelopment.

In January 2019, we invited nearly 250 neighbors to a neighborhood meeting to learn about the proposed development and ask questions. Even though a neighborhood meeting was not a requirement of our development application, it was important for us to engage the community and receive input.

In February 2019, we presented the proposal to the Board of Adjustments and received unanimous support. We conducted three full design reviews with city staff, continuously refining the development

Features like bringing it to the sidewalk’s edge on Grandview Ave., the amount of the lot that has to be built upon and the materials used are requirements of the Land Development Code and the Design Guidelines for Olde Town.

The stepped-back second and third stories creating residential outdoor space, recessed retail doorways, brickwork detail and other features are a result of input from neighbors and local business owners.

Although we know change can be challenging, we are grateful for the positive conversations we have started and strong relationships we have built. Replacing the existing dilapidated structures with new for-sale residences and retail will activate the east end of Grandview and provide lasting value to the community.

We want to thank everyone that has supported us and this project over the years. We look forward to discussing Grandview Station and its compatibility with the Design Guidelines for Olde Town with the Arvada City Council on March 16th.

“I was so thankful for ISR,” Groza said.

For 2-year-old Benjamin Simcik, ISR lessons are about giving him survival skills when swimming with his parents and two older siblings, his mother Laura Simcik said.

“When you’re in a pool with three kids it could be life or death so fast and it’s really scary,” she said. “He needs to know that if you’re in water you can go under really fast.”

Benjamin did some crying when he began lessons several weeks ago. By week two he could float in the water without being held. In his fifth week, Benjamin was turning on his back when let go by his instructor and kicking to the pool’s edge in seconds.

“It was a little hard to watch at first,” Simcik said of the daily lessons.

“I think the consistency helped me too because I knew what to expect.”

Benjamin and Hyacinth’s instructor, Jennifer Dombrowski, has been ISRcertified for nine years and works in Highlands Ranch. She lets each student move at a pace that works for them, she said. She never allows a child to try a skill — putting their face in the water, submerging, floating — until she’s certain they’re ready, she said.

Both Dombrowski and McDonald, who is an independent contractor at the Brighton Recreation Center and teaches in Arvada, said demand is high for the program.

“Every child needs to know selfsurvive,” Dombrowski said. “Give each child that skill before they find themselves alone in the water.”

Castle Rock swim instructor Russ Marsh, who owns Smilefish Swim School, said former ISR students have come to him afraid of the water, which he believes is because of the ISR training.

“I think it’s horrible, because I get kids that come to me that are 3 or 4 years old that are terrified,” he said.

“They’re scared to death of the water.

Not all of them, but too many.”

He’d prefer the youngest of swimmers undergo parent-taught classes, where parents are in the pool learning alongside infants and toddlers. It provides an important layer of comfort for children, Marsh said, who began as a swim coach in 1972 and coached for 35 years, including several at the University of Colorado. He switched to running swim lessons 15 years ago.

And ISR is not endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics because it lacks any studies conducted by peer-reviewed journals.

AAP spokeswoman Sarah Denny has served on the organization’s coun-

cil for Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention for seven years. The general pediatrician was also lead author on the AAP’s policy statement for drowning prevention.

“At this time, we do not endorse ISR because there’s no evidence to show that ISR is effective in preventing drowning,” Denny said. “There is absolutely no evidence around ISR.” Denny said she isn’t sure why studies are not available on the program, but it leaves AAP without the necessary information to take a stance on ISR. A spokesperson for ISR could not be reached for comment.

Parents of children in ISR told Colorado Community Media they either were not aware of the criticism toward ISR or were not swayed by it. Firsthand experience, they said, earned their faith in the program.

“Some parents can’t handle their kids crying and they mistake that for being scared,” Groza said. “Just because your kid cries doesn’t mean they’re scared. It could just mean that they’re a 2-year-old and they don’t want to do something.”

RV girls season ends at the Denver Coliseum Mustangs bow out of state quarterfinals

DENVER — It’s become nearly a decade-long trend for Ralston Valley girls basketball coach Jeff Gomer to bring his Mustangs down to the Denver Coliseum.

For the fifth time in six seasons and sixth time over the past eight years the Mustangs advanced at least to the Great 8 of the Class 5A girls basketball state tournament. It took the defending 5A state champions —Cherry Creek — to end Ralston Valley’s season.

The No. 2-seeded Bruins defeated the No. 7 Mustangs 46-33 in the state quarterfinals March 6 at the Denver Coliseum.

“We executed what we wanted to defensively to hold that team to 46 points,” Ralston Valley coach Jeff Gomer said.

“There were just so many missed opportunities. We missed layups and at the free-throw line.”

The Mustangs (20-6 record) shot 13for-40 (32.5 percent) from the field and 3-for-10 from the charity stripe.

“We have to learn how to score better,” Gomer admitted. “All year long we’ve been pretty solid defensively.”

One of the lone bright spots offensively was Saya Sabus. The Ralston Valley sophomore was 6-for-7 from the field pouring in a team-high 14 points. She had nine points at halftime that clearly drew Cherry Creek’s coaching staff ’s attention.

The Bruins (24-2) switched up defensively after halftime. Cherry Creek senior Jana Van Gytenbeek got the assignment to try to slowdown Sabus.

by Gatorade earlier on the day.

“That tells you something,” Gomer said of Cherry Creek putting Van Gytenbeek on Sabus defensively after halftime. “She (Sabus) has potential to become a really good offensive player.

We’ll see what happens.”

Sabus had five points with Van Gytenbeek guarding her in the second half.

“I thought that was really cool,” Sabus said of the future Sanford University guard covering her one-on-one in the second half. “She is a great player and I’m proud to get a chance to play against her.”

Van Gytenbeek broke the all-time state record for career assists earlier this season. She added five more assists to her record against the Mustangs, but was held to a season-low two points.

Cherry Creek senior Cali Clark did the majority of the offensive damage for the Bruins. Clark scored a gamehigh 20 points and added 15 rebounds.

“We played together as a team,” Sabus said having to face the Bruins that defeated the Mustangs 79-40 a few weeks earlier. “We knew it was going to be the last game for our seniors. We wanted to go out, have fun and play hard for them.”

Ralston Valley graduates just three seniors — Ellie Schweiker, Madison Young and Emma Kenner. The Mustangs have a strong returning core of four starters that includes junior Sydney Bevington that nearly averaged a double-double this season.

“We came a long way,” Gomer said of the season. “We sputtered a lot early. We were winning games, but not playing

Ralston Valley’s intention is to make a sixth trip in seven years back to the Denver Coliseum next season.

“We are going to come back here,” Sabus said of her first trip playing in

the Denver Coliseum. “It was an amazing experience just being surrounded by such great players.”

GOLDEN — Pueblo East continues to have success against familiar foes during the Class 4A boys basketball state tournament.

“When we saw them (Golden) on the bracket we knew it was revenge time,” said Pueblo East senior Darnell Kindred, who poured in 20 points for the Eagles on March 4 in the Sweet 16 game at Golden High School.

The No. 13-seeded Eagles upset No. 4 Golden Demons 65-62 in what was a rematch from earlier this season.

Golden got the better against Pueblo East the first time around with a 62-59 win Dec. 7 during the Golden/ D’Evelyn Preview Classic.

Pueblo East (18-8 record) flipped the script to come out on the winning end during the round of 16 state playoff

game.

“We knew it was going to be tough.

It was a very similar game from the first time,” Pueblo East coach Mike Massaro said of the second go-around against Golden. “I think we got the breaks this time. The things that hurt us last time were turnovers, shot selection and rebounding. We really tried to focus on those three things.”

Golden (18-7) and Pueblo East were tied 33-33 at halftime, but senior Ben McLaughlin buried back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Demons a 6-point lead early in the third quarter.

The Eagles did answer with a 9-0 run to take the lead. Junior Kyle Miller hit a big 3-pointer and Kindred had a pair of buckets in the paint during the run.

“If would could have gotten a few stops and opened up (the lead) a little bit, but they just pushed the basketball,” Golden coach Lou Vullo said of

Pueblo East’s 9-0 run midway through the third quarter. “Everyone for them rebounds the ball and push up the ball. I thought we played pretty good defense on them. They are just really athletic.”

Pueblo East dominated inside the paint after halftime.

“We knew we had the size,” Kindred said of the Eagles pounding the ball inside for the majority of the second half. “We knew if we could get in the paint we would have a good opportunity to win this game.”

Junior Brenden Harding had a solid fourth quarter pouring in eight of his 14 points in the final eight minutes before fouling out late. The Eagles closed the game making nine free throws in the final minute.

Pueblo East junior Jaxson Herring gave Golden the ball and one final chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer. With 11.5 seconds left the Demons had the ball. However, they never got off a shot as a pass to senior Kevin Mulligan was low and went out of bounds.

“We were looking to put a shooter in the corner, have a little dribble penetration and get the kick out,” Vullo said of the play drawn up in an attempt to tie the game in the final seconds. “I think it was a bit of a bad pass, but those things happen.”

For the second year in a row, Golden bowed out of the state tournament in the Sweet 16.

and a league title this year, this team exceeded expectations,” said Vullo, who had guided the Demons to a 32-19 record over two seasons.

Golden and Green Mountain both lost their round of 16 games to eliminate 4A Jeffco League teams from the state tournament.

“When I first got the job our backs were against the wall,” said Vullo, who finished his second year at the helm of the Demons’ basketball program. “I don’t think a lot of people thought we would succeed. The credit goes to the kids. There are no great coaches without great kids. That room is full of great kids and great players.”

“I think a lot of people take this for granted but there are a lot of people who live somewhere else who would give anything to be able to participate in a process like this.”

Here is a closer look at two Jeffco caucuses and the experiences of Wahan and others who attended them.

Republican Caucus A little after 9 a.m. Wahan arrived at her caucus location, northwest Arvada’s Pomona High School. She was one of many attendees who experienced difficulties with pulling up her voter registration online and finding her caucus room, but she made it, along with three other caucus participants, as they got started 45 minutes after its 10 a.m. start time.

At the start of the caucus, Wahan was elected to be one of the precinct’s two delegates to the county assembly later in March. Wahan’s caucus room also received several visits from Republican candidates over the course of the morning, including Vicki Pyne, the only Republican candidate for state House District 27.

“My (Democratic) opponent Brianna Forco does not have anything to say about what we are concerned about for roads, schools and sex education for our kids,” Pyne said. “Parental rights are not a value for her, she wants religion out of everything, so I

“I think the two main guys are Hickenlooper and Romanoff and I would’ve liked Hickenlooper more if he had not run for president and started running for Senate from the start instrad of getting in when there was already a strong field,” he said. “That led me more toward Romanoff although I like them both.”

Scott Merrifield, the First Vice Chair of the Jeffco Dems, lobbied during the caucus for candidate Trish Zornio, a scientist who he said is strongly focused on education and environmental issues.

“I want to get her on the ballot because why has it always got to be the guy’s club?” Merrifield said.

“Let’s be honest, it’s probably going to be Hickenlooper, Romanoff and maybe one other on the primary ballot and I think that one other should be Trish and then in the primary we can choose.”

During Merrfield and Hill’s caucus, Zornio and Romanoff were the two candidates to receive enough votes to receive delegates to the state caucus.

Both Hill and Merrifield were chosen to serve as delegates to that caucus with Hill declaring it is his intention to run to be one of the state’s electoral college electors, which are also selected at the state assembly.

“I want to vote for president,” Hill said. “I don’t know what my chances are but I will carry a sign around saying ‘vote for Dave.’”
