in Colorado. In 2013, we (Valor) beat F Fairview and we lost to Cherry Creek in 2014. In 2015 and 2016, we beat Pomona.

In 2018, (after taking the job at Cherry Creek), Cherry Creek lost to Valor in the championships and this year, we beat Columbine. I’ve been fortunate being around amazing athletes.

I think success comes from a combination of great athletes, schools drawing kids in and the kids’ hard work and commitment.

I’d had coaching jobs at Omaha South High School and Sheridan High School, and then a Pomona buddy who was the defensive coordinator at Valor Christian High School told me they had an opening, so I applied. Later on, I had a connection with a coach at Cherry Creek; he had been my social studies teacher at Pomona and he was my wife’s boss while she was in school, and we stayed in touch. So I’ve been a teacher and assistant coach at Valor and now, I’m dean of students and the defen-

Six championships I’ve been a coach in six out of the last seven 5A football championships

A passion and a career I love coaching and I love working with the kids. My motivation for becoming a coach was my grandfather.

He told me when I chose something to do in life, I should find something I’m passionate about. There’s so many life lessons in sports and many ups and downs. As a coach, you don’t get paid a lot so you have to have a passion for that, and I feel fortunate to have a wife who supports that. The older my kids get, I have aspirations to coach them in youth sports and I do some of that now. I’m always going to be involved in coaching in some way.

Sheriff, County Commissioners discuss jail release crisis Sheriff warns that more releases, enhanced arrest standards are coming soon

When Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Shrader told the county Board of Commissioners that the county was nearing the next stage of its jail crowding crisis, it provided an opportunity for Shrader and the board to discuss the issue and possible

solutions.

Shrader addressed the board on Jan. 28,saying that the Sheriff ’s Office was “dangerously close” to needing to implement “enhanced arrest standards” at the county jail Shrader said that the jail’s population had that morning exceeded the 1,172-capacity number at which the jail must begin releasing inmates in order to stay under its capacity.

The sheriff ’s office had previously had to release dozens of jail inmates before their sentences were up on two occasions earlier in the month. Jail capacity became an issue at the start of the year after the sheriff closed a floor of the jail as part of countywide budget cuts.

Enhanced arrest standards, which involve only booking inmates who have committed certain crimes into the jail, are the next step the department will use to manage the jail population once it has released all the inmates who are eligible to be released early.

Shrader told the commissioners he had already notified local police departments that use the jail about that possibility and had his staff engage them in conversations about strategies for incarcerating fewer people.

“It is conceivable that we get a call when we go into enhanced arrest standards where somebody is breaking into cars, and a deputy sheriff

shows up and as they contact that suspect there is a fight to get them apprehended, and when he is apprehended he has multiple credit cards that don’t belong to him, multiple IDs and maybe drugs,” Shrader said.

“None of those will be sufficient enough to book that person into jail under the enhanced arrest standards.”

Shrader said the current situation also has led to “a greater concentration of bad people in the jail” that had resulted in four deputies being assaulted in the last eight weeks.

“That is a bit unprecedented,” Shrader said.

Commissioners ponder solutions Commissioner Casey Tighe said that one potential solution would be for the county to focus on allowing more people to bond out of jail after getting arrested through pretrial release.

“Hopefully we can continue to push to have appropriate and safe pretrial standards in order to make sure people are processed through the system quickly and if they can safely be processed though then we cannot have them in the jail as long to keep the jail population at a reasonable number,’ Tighe said.

Tighe also expressed hope that the criminal justice coordinating committee, a group that includes representatives from the police, the District Attorney’s office and other groups that is tasked with addressing jail space issues, could help to promote solutions, including increased usage of pretrial release. Shrader and Tighe are both members of that committee.

Tighe, however, said “progress” on that committee has been glacial for the five years he has been on it and that many of the possible steps to ease the population of the jail are already being utilized. Tighe, in turn, expressed agreement that progress had been slow on the committee but said the jail crisis is introducing a new

sense of urgency.

Commissioner Lindsay Szabo also asked Shrader why if it would be possible to temporarily house inmates at jails in neighboring counties when the population demanded it.

“Would we do that?” Shrader said of the idea of one county accepting another’s inmates. “We wouldn’t bear the cost of some other county. The great likelihood is its going to be anywhere be between $75 and $100 a day to house them somewhere else. Its more expensive to house them somewhere else than to have the staff to house them here.”

Commissioner Lesley Dahlkemper also expressed a desire for the county to attempt to identify new strategies and efficiencies for managing the

population and emphasized that it is necessary for the community to see the county attempting to do that.

“We have a community that’s asking us are you looking at innovations, are you looking at efficiencies, how are you prioritizing and what is the rationale behind your decisions?”

Dahlkemper said. “I think it’s up to all of us to be able to share those responses so our community isn’t confused and they are clear on why we are making the decisions we are making.”

As of Feb. 10, the Sheriff ’s Office had not had to release inmates since Jan. 21. However, it has come close with inmate population reaching 1,168 on Feb. 10, just two shy of the 1,170 figure that would trigger releases.

Do You Think a Big Down Payment Is Needed to Buy a Home? Think CHFA.

One of the most enduring misconceptions among home buyers is that a large down payment — typically 20% — is required in order to buy a home. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Best of all, however, the Colorado Housing & Finance Authority (CHFA, pronounced “Chaffa) can get you into a home with as little as $1,000 out of pocket cost. CHFA loans have income limits, but they are reasonable, up to $120,100 in the metro area, with a maximum purchase price of $484,350. Their website is super helpful and easy to navigate at www.chfainfo.com.

At that website you’ll learn the complete process involved in getting approved for a CHFA loan. One of the first steps is to take a free half-day buyer education class that covers every aspect of the home buying process as well as ownership responsibilities after closing.

CHFA loans are obtained through mortgage lenders, not from CHFA directly, and Golden Real Estate can connect you with a CHFA-approved lender.

Lane closures coming on Ralston Road Construction project begins this month STAFF REPORT

Construction on Ralston Road will begin mid-February as phase one of a two-part project gets underway.

Phase one of the city’s Ralston Road Widening Project will alter the road between Upham and Yukon streets.

Currently, the road has two nine-foot lanes each way and a center turn lane.

After the project, travel lanes will be 11 feet wide and the center turn lane will be 12 feet, said infrastructure communications manager Rachael Kuroiwa.

The project will also add a pedestrian path, eight feet wide, on the side of the road, create curb gutters and upgrade the signal at Olde Wadsworth Boulevard.

The city has planned for phase one construction to be complete within one year, with a budget of roughly $4.5 million. The project is partly financed through city funds and partly grantfunded through the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), Kuroiwa said.

Throughout construction, “the goal is to maintain one lane in each direction, however, there may be times when we need to do full closures to expedite construction,” Kuroiwa said.

She encouraged residents to continue frequenting businesses in the area, which will be compensated by the city if impacted by the construction, based on existing regulations, she said. The city will ensure all businesses can be accessed throughout the project.

Some bus stops will be affected. Residents should visit the RTD website and sign up for RTD’s rider alerts to get more information on specific routes, Kuroiwa said.

Phase two of the project, funded through bonds, will see Ralston updated from Yukon to Garrison Street.

Construction will begin near the end of this year and last until early 2022, Kuroiwa said.

Improvements will be similar to those in phase one, including a pedestrian path and upgraded traffic signals, while also adding trees and planters, she said.

“We are really encouraging people to plan ahead and consider alternate routes. If you live close to a G Line neighborhood station, consider the G Line,” she said. “These projects are part of our comprehensive plan. We’re trying to create a safe infrastructure for the future of Arvada.”

Phase 1 of the Ralston Road project, beginning now, will update infrastructure and widen lanes between Upham and Yukon streets. Single-lane closures will occur throughout the project, with full road closures possible. Phase 2 — beginning near the end of 2020 — will likewise update the road, with single-lane and potential full closures, from Yukon to Garrison streets.

The six-month project will last until the summer and slightly widen Wadsworth “to provide a safer transition for those turning right onto Wadsworth from 72nd Avenue, and those turning into the Arvada Center” at W. 69th Place, Kuroiwa said.

Construction will occur along northbound Wadsworth Boulevard from W. 72nd Avenue to W. 74th Avenue. Southbound, construction will occur between W. 72nd Avenue and W. 68th Avenue.

During the project, the right lane will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some bus stops will be affected.

Q&A with astronaut Matthew Dominick Jeffco schools grad a test pilot for NASA, preparing to go to space

signed to a mission in the next couple of years. My job is ultimately to go to space, so I keep up all of my skills.

Now that you’ve graduated, what’s next?

All of us have ground jobs and we rotate through who’s in space at each time. Right now, I’m working on three new spaceships that haven’t gone to space before. Most of the time, a test pilot is sitting down with engineers and asking questions. We work through how we’re going to launch this for the first time and run scenarios in the simulator.

As NASA prepares for upcoming missions — including the 2024 Artemis mission, through which NASA will build a base at the moon — recent graduates from NASA’s basic training program await their first assignments to space.

The 2017 Class of Astronauts, which graduated at a ceremony in Jan. 2020, included Matthew Dominick, who grew up in Wheat Ridge and graduated from D’Evelyn High School in 2000.

Dominick interviewed with Colorado Community Media about his role at NASA and what the future has in store.

What was your path to becoming an astronaut?

I always wanted to explore and understand the world around me. I think every child has that. I went to the University of San Diego to study engineering and I liked the idea of going fast and flying, so in 2005, I joined the Navy and became a test pilot. I work with a bunch of very incredible people, and then I go home to my wife and two daughters and we continue exploring at home. I’m going to an event with my older daughter this weekend where we’re going to launch rockets with all of her friends. I love watching my daughters’ little minds explore the world.

I think of it as astronaut boot camp. We’ve got to learn how to work together in high-stress situations, we

study Russian, we take geology classes because if we go to the moon and are communicating back to geologists, we have to be able to use their language.

We have to practice space walks because if your spaceship breaks, you have to go out and repair it. And our training never ends; I could be as-

Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center being reorganized following issues Changes will split up facility, reduce overall population

A TROUBLED YEAR 2019 incidents at the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center: April 26 — A staff member is arrested on suspicion of sexual exploitation of a child.

May 1 — 11 staff members are injured in a riot at the center.

May 3 — Three sex offenders with gang affiliations escape.

May 29 — Three female guards are injured breaking up a fight at the facility.

June 25 — A 17-year-old escapes and commits several burglaries in Colorado Springs.

Sept. 25 — An investigation determines that a former center employee helped an inmate escape and provided shelter for him for about a year.

After a tumultuous year that saw two convicted sex offenders escape and both residents and staff members alike injured in multiple incidents, the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center in Golden is being reorganized around a new guiding principal: “smaller is better.”

Staff members of Colorado’s departments of human and youth services announced on Jan. 30 several changes for the center, including a plan to divide it into four smaller separate youth centers and reduce the facility’s total resident population from about 150 to a maximum of 112.

The staff members explained those changes, which are designed to improve both the safety and security of the center and the effectiveness of the treatment services that are offered to the youth offenders that reside there, are being implemented in response to the widely report problems at the center.

“We’ve been working diligently to understand the root causes of the challenges and to move to take action to correct the errors that need re-

form but also to double down on the things that are working and do more of those,” Colorado Department of Human Services Executive Director Michelle Barnes said. “This does not happen overnight but we are committed to the safety of our youth and staff in our 10 state-run facilities.”

Barnes said an outside study had determined three main issues existed at the center that were contributing to the problems it had experienced: the presence of drugs at the center, a need for more focus on basic safety, and the facility’s shift from a correctional model to one oriented around rehabilitation.

DHS staff members said the plan to divide the facility into four youth services centers will attempt to address those issues by reducing the number of other residents and staff members each resident has contact with during the day while facilitating an environment where both staff and residents can create tighter bonds.

Each of the four youth centers will have between 16 and 36 residents.

They will live in pods consisting of 10 to 12 beds inside four separate existing buildings at Lookout Mountain. All of those center residents will attend classes, eat meals and do other activities with the other residents of their center but will not have contact with the other centers.

“You want the youth to bond together to create the safe milieu as well as strong relationships with the staff,” Division of Youth Services Director Anders Jacobson said. “When you disrupt that each and every day and send a whole group of youth to school at one time and they are comingling in recreation-type activities then you are disrupting that cohesiveness and introducing new youth to other youth constantly. We have found that has been one of our big disruptions to get away from.”

The problems that stem from the intermingling have not been a problem at DYS’ other facilities the way they have been at Lookout Mountain, which is one the state’s biggest youth services facilities. That further suggests that it does not make sense to put so many kids together, Jacobson said.

to say `we can’t go out and build four more youth services centers the way we want them’ but we can sure do the philosophy here which is right for kids and right for staff.”

Though the reorganization is one of the biggest changes being made to the center, Barnes said the facility has already implemented new rules, including changes to the search policy and the implementation of random drug dog searches, to address the drug issues. Other changes are aimed at addressing the center’s 40 percent staff turnover rate, which will include increased training and better tools for evaluating candidates to work at the center.

But the staff were clear that as the center moves forward with the new structure and other changes, it will continue to embrace its new model focused on rehabilitation rather than punishment.

“What we know is that punitive interventions with youth are not things that teach them skills so that when they leave us, they can be safe members of the community,” said Perry May, CDHS’ deputy executive director of Health Facilities. “What works with youth is doing an assessment to understand the underlying issues behind their behaviors and then working with them to shape new behaviors so when they leave us, they can be safe in the community.”

But May said that while that shift is ultimately supported by research, there could be more growing pains along the way.

“When you move from a punitive environment to an environment that is more rehabilitative that is a pretty normal reaction for staff to feel like we used to be able to really have control of the kids through these punitive measures and now we are using our relationship and incentives and trying to teach skills to them that can feel out of control,” he said. “But research shows very, very clearly that is a more impactful and successful model.”

What to know about Colorado’s primary elections Contest among presidential hopefuls falls on ‘Super Tuesday’ in March

Colorado is gearing up to hold the state’s first presidential primary in 20 years, and it falls on what political junkies call “Super Tuesday” — when the largest number of states and territories hold a presidential primary or caucus.

This year, it’s March 3.

Steve Hurlbert, spokesman for the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, said there’s “no question” that Colorado holding its contest on that date will give the state a bigger spotlight in the primary season.

“Where we fall on the calendar is really important,” said Hurlbert, whose office oversees elections. “Also, the nature of what Colorado is: We’re definitely a purple state and (one) that both parties see as up for grabs.”

Here are some important things to know before the primary elections, which will choose parties’ nominees to compete in the November general election. Ballots were to be mailed out

for the March primary the week of Feb. 10.

Back in vogue Colorado’s last presidential primary happened in 2000 — since then, presidential nominees were voted on at caucuses, which are overseen by political parties.

In primary elections, voters submit ballots in favor of their chosen candidate.

A caucus is a system of local gatherings where voters decide which candidate to support — engaging in discussions at places such as highschool gyms — and select delegates that will ultimately cast votes at conventions to nominate candidates.

Hurlbert, referencing the recent news of a chaotic Iowa caucus marred by technological issues, argued the primary system has advantages.

“A primary system is run by the state election officials and not through a political party,” Hurlbert said. “That’s the key thing — they’re done by people who do this for a living and are some of the best at it in the country.”

In the typical caucus — and some other states’ primaries — voters are limited to the contest of the party with which they are affiliated.

Colorado’s unaffiliated voters — those not registered to a political party — will receive both parties’ ballots in the mail.

They can only vote and return one ballot, though — if they return both, neither will be counted, Hurlbert noted.

Unaffiliated voters who vote in a party’s primary will remain unaffiliated. However, the primary they in which vote — but not who they voted for — will be a public record.

If there is a minor party contest — for parties other than Democrats and Republicans — those affiliated with that minor party can vote for those candidates.

Two primaries and a caucus On June 30, the state will hold this year’s other primary election, which selects candidates for offices such as U.S. Senate, U.S. House, state Senate and House, and other regional or local races such as for district attorneys and University of Colorado regents.

There will be an indication of frontrunners in those races before June, though: the caucus, which takes place March 7. Parties will still hold local caucus gatherings to gauge support before the June primary.

The presidential race will not have a caucus, though — only the March 3 primary.

17-year-olds good to go An interesting aspect of Colorado’s elections this year, Hurlbert said, is that it’s the first year that 17-year-olds who turn 18 by the November election will be able to vote in Colorado’s two primaries (the one for presidential candidates and other in June for more local races).

Changing Jeffco school start times would cost millions School board commits to continuing to study later starts for teens

Following years of work to establish later start times across the district, the Reimagining Time Task Force, made up of Jeffco parents and district employees, presented to the school board Feb. 5 with their proposal’s estimated price tag: anywhere from $3 million to $9 million just in the first year, with millions of dollars also needed every year thereafter.

But while “cost is going to drive some of our decision making,” board member Ron Mitchell said at the Feb. 5 study session, research showing the negative mental health effects of early start times spurred the board to unanimously approve holding and exploring the proposal.

In other words, while the board did not commit to immediately funding the proposal, it has committed to discussing the proposal again after further data — including community feedback — has been gathered.

Jeffco parents Katie Winner and Laura Johnson, the taskforce cochairs, pointed to recommendations from several organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Sleep Foundation. The sources suggest adolescent students should not start school before 8:30 a.m., taskforce members said.

While these were the options presented, Winner said that after more research, the taskforce might consider other options, including taking every school’s current start time and pushing them 30 minutes.

The concerns Board members raised several questions, with board member Brad Rupert suggesting research on cutting initial costs by rolling out the proposal over several years.

Mitchell asked if an 8:30 start time for high schoolers could interfere with after-school activities.

“We need to get high school students home in time to babysit younger brothers and sisters,” he said. “High school students are also in the work world.”

Winner pointed out that in a community survey, there was not a significant number of individuals who named childcare for younger siblings as a concern.

As for the cost, Superintendent Jason Glass said the district has not identified a source of funding for the proposal. Rupert proposed the possibility of reviewing the budget in the future for potential cuts.

“I’m not saying that’s what I would vote for, but I’m saying that’s a choice the board should be making,” he said.

Board members approved a staff recommendation to hold action until the taskforce researches options to reduce the cost.

Eventual action is important, Mitchell said, because no matter the outcome, “the concept has some value for us somewhere.”

C-Lab aims to restructure higher ed using blockchain tech Nonprofit and government holding program launch meeting Jan. 30

For those working in higher education, there’s no shortage of possible solutions when it comes to inequity or student debt said Taylor Kendal, chief strategy adviser at education nonprofit Learning Economy.

One example: A digital diploma that lists every course a student has taken and every certification they have earned. An employer who could look at that diploma, recognize a student’s qualifications and offer them an entrylevel job, even if the student has only spent one year — or maybe even less — at a university.

The trick is figuring out which solution will work best and then rallying the manpower to make it happen, Kendal said. That’s where C-Lab comes in.

The new state initiative is a partnership between the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) and Learning Economy, which is funding the initiative.

Launching this January, the program seeks to address education concerns using new technologies, including blockchain technology.

The CDHE brainstormed the Colorado Education Work Lab (C-Lab) to meet its strategic goal to increase educational equity, after having been part of the state’s former Council for the Advancement of Blockchain Technology Use, Ellis said.

“We’re really thankful for the governor’s support; he has this agenda for bold ideas, and our executive director (Angie Paccione) does as well,” he said. “It was inspiring for all of us to say, `let’s go out there and see if we can make these practical applications of blockchain.’”

The C-Lab also aims to address the skills gap between the skills that graduates have and the skills employers expect them to have, Kendal said.

According to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment’s 2018 Skills Report, 33.5% of employers do not believe their job applicants have

the occupational skills required for the position; 22.6% do not believe applicants have the interpersonal skills required.

To address this, C-Lab seeks to bring universities, employers, blockchain experts and the government together.

The lab has invited stakeholders to a free event on Jan. 30 at History Colorado, 1200 N. Broadway.

Attendees will include faculty from institutions across the area such as Arapahoe Community College, Red Rocks Community College and the University of Colorado.

The all-day event will include panels and activities explaining what the CLab is and allowing groups to join the C-Lab network, Kendal said.

endeavors. The digital diploma, which could be feasible through blockchain technology, is just one example of what the groups might ultimately decide on, Ellis said.

How students could benefit Courtney Dale, Arapahoe’s BAS Instructional Designer, said the college would like to use this record-keeping technology for students in the school’s bachelor’s programs, which are exclusively online, she said.

The students could earn digital proof, known as badges, for specialized skills they gain through the program. Potentially, they could post those badges on sites like LinkedIn. Adobe runs a similar program, awarding digital badges for Adobe certifications.

Curiosity is the cue for 2020

A

re you curious about 2020? I am.

Perhaps you’ve made different and definite New Year’s resolutions for 2020.

I never make resoALCHEMY lutions, although I do make pledges – mostly to myself – throughout the year … even if one is simply to repaint my office, which, by the way turned out to be a much larger project than anticipated.

When asked “What are three places in nature you’d like to visit in 2020?”, I chose places I haven’t yet visited: the Galapagos Islands, Iceland, and Alaska.

When considering what workout or exercise routine I’d like to establish – or continue – the answer was easy: cycling. I enjoy road cycling for the (almost) Zen of it – I am always super attentive for inattentive drivers – and I thrive on mountain biking simply

Early this year, a creative agency I work with in Chicago, c:change, sent me a huge poster in one of those tantalizing cardboard tubes that made me curious. Inside, interestingly enough, was a poster about … curiosity.

On the poster, members of the c:change team shared what they had been curious about in 2019. One person tried 10 different kinds of oysters, one explored the world of Harry Potter, and another finally got that rock climbing gym membership.

On the other side of the poster, however, is the intriguing question: “Where will curiosity take you in 2020?”

He reduced taxes and spurred the economy to become one of the healthiest in the world. The stock market indices, and thus our own investments, have grown to historic highs. He has placed about 190 judges on benches across the US that believe the constitution says what it says and is changed by amendment, not interpretation. I nominate Donald Trump for Employee of the Year. I intend to renew his contract in November.

Whoever the candidate is, we have to remove Gardner. Although he bills himself as a “moderate”, Cory Gardner has voted alongside Trump 90% of the time. Gardner has decimated environmental protections, and voted to take away funding for housing for our military families to instead fund “the wall.” Now he has voted to acquit a president who our founders would have removed from office immediately. It is also true that Trump and his PACs have paid thousands of dollars towards Gardner’s re-election campaign. I hope Colorado voters remember all the ways that Gardner has betrayed us and supported Trump when they vote for who will be our next senator.

Take your eyes of the trail for a few seconds and suddenly you’re doing an endo (when the front tire catches on something and your back end goes over) or you’re skidding off the trail into some prickly stuff while your feet are still clipped into the pedals. Ah, yes … I really do love mountain biking.

A culinary question asked, “What one dish or recipe would you like master?” Actually, I have two. One, I want to make crepes – mounds and mounds of them – just like my sister does, and two, I want to make stir-fry meals that don’t end up as soup.

When pondering what one subject I would like learn a little more about, I was stumped though …there is so

So, of course, last week I spent WAY too much time in front of televisions and getting updates from Twitter on the latest political activities. But, just in case that was all so long ago — speaking HITTING in political terms — HOME for you to remember all of it, here’s the quick recap: • Monday, the Iowa Caucuses, first-in-thenation preliminary to decide who will go against President Trump this fall • Tuesday, the State of the Union Address Michael Alcorn • Wednesday, the formal Senate vote on Impeachment • Thursday, Iowa almost sort of kind of announced the official winner from Monday night • Friday, the Democrats’ New Hampshire debate It was a big week.

And, boy, did the cable news and online sources treat it like it was a big week. Starting with the debacle that was counting the votes in the caucuses of Iowa (I thought all the great

techy minds were on the political Left….), the pundit class was earning a lot of overtime. By about midnight, most of the newsers I was following had given up on getting a straight answer from the Iowa Democratic Party, but it was fairly clear, at that point, who the top two vote-getters were going to be, and who else was still alive. In the long run, the winner of Iowa earned 14 delegates and the 2nd place finisher earned 12, out of 1,990 delegates that the winner will have to earn by the Democratic Convention.

It was, all things considered, meaningless.

Then, Tuesday night’s State of the Union grabbed the attention of all the talking heads for the open and childish feud brewing between President Trump and Nancy Pelosi. He refused to shake her hand, she tore up his speech … all great theater. But, does anybody remember anything of actual substance from the 80-minute speech or anything that came after it? I don’t.

So Donald and Nancy won’t be sharing a Valentine’s Day meal — so what?

Wednesday the foregone conclusion became formalized. No matter what you believe about the substance of the charges against the President or the process the Impeachment went through, there was never, ever a doubt that the Senate would acquit.

A pack of issues regarding wolf restoration

I

n January, the Secretary of State confirmed there were enough signatures on petitions calling for a public referendum on “restoration of gray wolves” in Colorado. This is- OUTDOOR sue has taken wings LIVING often over that last 50 years either by wolf reintroduction supporters seeking endorsement and support from the state wildlife professionals or (as in this year’s efforts) direct voter referendum Ron Hellbusch petition for a ballot box vote.

The process consistently attracts controversy from the various corners of our state. The decision will ultimately become more complex as special interest groups enter the process. We outside the circle should take

There aren’t 67 votes in the Senate for anything these days, except maybe extended lunch breaks.

And Friday was little more than a typical antiseptic conversation featuring two old white guys and an old white woman who have been in politics forever, a rich white guy who bought his way onto the stage, a younger white guy and white woman from the middle of the country, and a young Asian man who’s never been in politics before. For what? 24 delegates, roughly 1.2% of what the winner will need to earn. Sure, there will be story lines coming out after Tuesday, but not much else.

Here’s the thing: all of the energy, drama, and angst — not to mention the television time and news division budgets — all amount to nothing.

Zero. Zilch. Nada. Bupkus.

It is all theater. It is all for show. No matter how clever Nancy Pelosi’s act

interest and follow the process in the interest of our state.

Let’s hope the process seriously considers the variety of factors and specific conditions that exist in Colorado Today. The big reality is we are living in the 21st century, with a significant difference in human population and in some cases, a diminishing population of deer and elk game prey, that wolf packs consume as prey. Let me offer some issues to consider, some “food for thought” that are important to consider in the reintroduction study process.

We need to be knowledgeable of wildlife populations in today’s 21st century as compared to the mid1890s and 1900s; tabulate the vast raw back country open land and the more marginal big game herds of the early years. Look closely at our state’s current expanding human mountain population and distribution.

Consider the change in land use and

shrinking open remote back country lands as compared to 100 years ago.

Study how other growing wolf populated states such as Montana, Idaho and Wyoming are dealing with this restoration issue; be aware of the successes and/or failures of their efforts of restoration balance of these issues in a changing environment, as well as population of wild game herds over a century in a changing environment.

Look at the changing popularity of big game hunting and public wildlife observation programs, as an economic issue in Colorado.

Consider the major impact that livestock growers face from this predator and likely changing reintroduction impact on mountain communities today. Today’s lesser open range suggest possible new conflicts of livestock and wildlife.

The one single most significant factor in this uncertain wild game predator/prey question is to build in

flexibility in how to control wolf pack “populations.” Wolf populations will surely expand, likely in a significant way and impact the populations of the elk and deer prey wildlife numbers.

Reintroduction without population controls will result in serious problems as time moves forward.

This issue is not just a wildlife issue, it is an economic issue, a wildlife observer issue and a matter of committing to controlling a balance of the wildlife species. Too often, once an absent wildlife specie is reintroduced there is no control nor commitment on the population and expansion and that can result in the loss of the prey specie.

The wolf reintroduction question warrants a watchful eye on how these other factors are identified and considered in the coming process.

And, in the meantime, there’s a pandemic developing which we almost certainly don’t know the full scope of (given that it started deep inside China), Russian jets are bombing civilians in Syria, Australia is still being devastated by fire, and quasi-political street violence hit three of our cities this weekend (Portland, New York, and Jacksonville).

Enjoy the show, everyone. But don’t forget, when you leave the theater, to keep your eyes on things that matter.

Environmental benefit, vintage popularity boost interest in thrift stores

rvada resident Eddie Marin has a passion for finding vintage items, and he shops at thrift stores at least twice a week. He looks for vintage sports T-shirts, old VHS tapes, hats, sweaters and more. Marin has found Star Wars lunchboxes from 1980, original Wheaties cereal boxes that feature Michael Jordan and vintage golf cleats from the early 1990s.

He’ll keep some of the items he’ll find at thrift stores, usually Denver Nuggets and Jordan apparel, or he’ll sell them at ThriftCon, a vintage clothing and collectible convention

that takes places in Denver.

“Every vintage T-shirt or piece of clothing is unique. Nowadays, everyone uses the same designs and same material for their items,” said Marin.

“Everything (from) back in the day feels much better, I think.”

Marin’s passion for vintage apparel and items is an example of why thrift stores have become more popular, according to Elena Karpova, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Department of Consumer, Apparel and Retail Studies.

The online resale marketplace thredUP estimates the resale market in 2018 hit $24 billion. Other than vintage apparel being trendy, Karpova says there’s another drive for interest in thrift stores — helping the environment.

“You continuously hear about climate change and people realize, in my opinion, that we should do something about it. While few of us are able to make big sweeping

ne of the best things about the Denver Museum of Nature & Science is how it brings a world of discovery into one place. No matter what your interest is, there’s an exhibit for you.

But this summer, the museum is taking people out into the world to do some exploring.

Beginning on the weekend of June 12, and stretching into July, the museum is hosting four multi-day river excursions, which pairs an expert in a certain field — paCOMING leontology, ecosysATTRACTIONS tems, astronomy and geology — with people interested in getting out in the wild.

“If you like the water and the outdoors, river trips are spectacular ways to discover them,” said Dr. Ian Clarke Reader Miller, who will be leading the geology excursion on the Green River in Utah and Colorado, July 22-26.

“What’s so cool about them is you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world, get closer to nature and learn about the planet.”

The tours are hosted through a partnership with Centennial Canoe Outfitters and represent another way the museum is looking to get families and people of all ages involved in education, conservation and preservation of the natural world.

“As a geologist and paleontologist, the area is just a total playground,” Miller said. “I know from working in the area that the river snakes through the Mesozoic, so we’ll be going back 100 to 200 million years.”

Centennial provides attendees with an extensive list of items that should be brought along, including a sleeping bag and tent.

One of his favorite parts about exploring nature by water is attendees will get to see remote places that could otherwise only be accessed by some intense hiking trails. And while canoeing is far from a passive mode of travel, there’s plenty of time to appreciate the surroundings.

“It’s really a quiet, serene and yet exciting glimpse into our world,” Miller said. “We won’t be on any super-fast rapids or anything, so that meandering approach means it’s very social. You can talk with other travelers or be not. It can be really introspective.”

For the educational side of things, Miller said guides will point out interesting features of the landscape as everyone travels downriver, and evenings will feature “fireside chats” on the trip’s topic of focus.

Social media has charged consumers to purchase new and cool trendy items, Karpova says in the book she helped co-author “Going Global: The Textile and Apparel Industry.” The demand for those items has led to fast fashion — cheap clothing made by mass-market retailers responding to what is trendy. Think of stores like H&M, Forever 21 and others.

The result of fast fashion leads to clothing becoming disposable like plastic bags, plastic utensils and paper plates, and according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a charity that works to accelerate the transition to a circular economy, one garbage truck of clothes is burned or landfilled every second.

“What is fashionable? Our perception has to change,” said Karpova.

“If being sustainable and environmentally friendly becomes fashionable, it will completely change the consumption patterns. Just shopping secondhand isn’t going to solve it, but if I’m not buying new and I’m buying secondhand instead, I prevent clothing from going to the landfill.”

human-services organization Family Tree, a pair of vintage handmade spurs came in this month, according to Rebekah Hawthorne, the store’s manager. The spurs were made in Colorado and featured a woman’s leg, complete with crosshatched fishnets.

Treasure Trunk Community Thrift Store put the spurs for sale on eBay, and they sold for $500.

“Beyond the benefits of reducing and reusing, being involved in your local thrift store is a great way to connect with your community. Donating items you no longer need is a very direct way to help your neighbors and frees up your space in a positive way,” said Hawthorne. “Plus, it’s fun to see your stuff get new homes.”

“It’s their own community thrift store, and that’s kind of special,” said Watson. Global Thrift is operated by volunteers and benefits Global Refuge, an organization that carries out international projects for refugees.

“When it’s a thrift store that has a mission behind it, the community comes together, and it becomes a special place for the community as well,” she said.

Watson said she has seen books, tools, records, furniture, purses, toys and more come through Global Thrift. Instruments like guitars, organs and pianos have also been donated to the store.

“It’s always interesting when you have someone’s personal things. I think a lot of people are trying to simply their life and their spending as well,” said Watson. “(People) realize you don’t always have to buy a brand-new item when you can buy something at a lower cost. It’s reusing and being wise with your finances.”

Family friendly and filmed in Colorado Local director hopes Spy film will make Christian films focus of state

Filmmaker Nate Blair has two goals. One is to make well-produced family friendly feature films in every genre, from westerns to horror — if that’s possible.

“I’ve got some ideas for a horror. I want to do one film in every genre, and I’ve knocked out five so far,” he said. “I’ve done a thriller, a teen comedy, a drama, a musical and now an action comedy.”

The second is to make Colorado’s Front Range the spot for familyfriendly filmmakers.

“I tell people in the industry that I don’t know why more filmmakers don’t come to Colorado,” he said.

“You can have pretty much everything but a rain forest and an ocean.

You name a scene, we can film it here, all within one area without having to travel a bunch.”

Blair is set to debut his latest project, a comedy/action adventure piece called “Sleeper Agent.”

“It makes me laugh,” he said. “I love a good spy movie, I love a good comedy and there is something about this that’s really fun.”

LITTLETON — Arguably Jeffco’s best male basketball player — Columbine senior Luke O’Brien — and Jeffco’s best male athlete — Ralston Valley senior Caleb Rillos — went head-to-head Feb. 5.

“I thought it was a great battle,” Ralston Valley coach Chris Braketa said of the O’Brien vs. Rillos matchup. “As a competitor you like to see two athletes go at it. Both of them did great things. It’s fun to watch really good players reach their potential in a game like this. They both played outstanding.”

In the end, the future University of Colorado hoopster — O’Brien — led Columbine to a 57-55 victory, ending the 7-game winning streak by Ralston Valley. O’Brien poured in a game-high 26 points.

“He (Rillos) is one of the best defenders that has guarded me so far.

He is a really good player,” O’Brien said. “He is going to do really great things up at Air Force.”

Rillos — three-sport athlete in football, basketball and lacrosse — actually celebrated signing to play football at the Air Force Academy in the morning Wednesday. He finished with 24 points for Ralston Valley.

“Luke is difficult to guard,” Rillos admitted. “I thought we did a pretty good job on his, but he got to the freethrow line more than we expected.

He is a great player.”

O’Brien was 10-for-14 from the line, including making seven free throws in the fourth quarter.

Ralston Valley (16-3, 3-1 in 5A Jeffco) hadn’t loss since a 5-point loss to Legend nearly a month ago. The Mustangs had their chances in the final seconds. A missed layup, a pair of missed free throws and not being able to get of a shot before the buzzer sounded marked the first conference loss for Ralston Valley.

“This is one of the games I’ve wanted to win the most,” Rillos said. “We are going to keep our heads up and keep battling. We’ll learn from this.

It will actually help us going into this final stretch before playoffs.”

Columbine (15-3, 3-1) had to get the victory to have a realistic shot of claiming a third straight conference title. A conference opening loss to Valor Christian gives Columbine little room for error.

The Rebels turned to O’Brien and Justin Lohrenz in the final quarter against Ralston Valley.

“They had to and that is what senior captains do. They need to step

up in games like this,” Columbine coach Clay Thielking said of O’Brien and Lohrenz stepping up in crunch time. “They weren’t perfect, but I thought the effort and composure was there from start to finish. That is what you need to beat a great team like Ralston Valley.”

Lohrenz finished with 13 points.

The future defensive lineman at the Washington State University made two key free throws with 24 seconds left to give the Rebels a 56-55 lead.

“In the end it came down to me and Luke,” Lohrenz said of him and O’Brien combining to score all of the Rebels’ 14 points in the fourth quarter. “We are the captains and the leaders. The team reflects on what we do.

We had to keep everyone together.”

O’Brien admitted he nearly had a costly mistake in the final seconds.

“That was a dumb play by me,” O’Brien said. “Thankfully they missed the free throws.”

Greco missed the first free throw. He purposely missed the second hoping the Mustangs could grab the rebound and get off a game-tying shot, but Columbine junior Luke Garrelts grabbed the rebound and got fouled.

It wasn’t over yet, Garrelts missed both free throws with 3.9 seconds left. Rillos grabbed the rebound, fired an outlet pass to senior Caden Gigstad who dribbled furiously down the court, but couldn’t get a shot off before time expired.

“There were a lot of interesting scenarios down the stretch,” Thielking

said. “It was a rollercoaster. Our guys stayed poised and Ralston Valley did too. I just thought it was just a great high school basketball game.”

Dakota Ridge (9-10, 4-0) actually takes over first place alone in the conference. Arvada West, Columbine, Ralston Valley and Valor Christian are all one-game back in the loss column for the race to the 5A Jeffco League title.

“It’s not in our hands anymore,” O’Brien said of the Rebels trying to win a third straight 5A Jeffco League title. “We need to do what we can and win out.”

Ralston Valley took an 83-78 overtime victory against Pomona on Feb. 8.

“We learn from everything, but you still have to turn the page,” Braketa said. “There is still a lot to play for.”

He added that the department and nonprofit have embraced the fact that they’re “dreaming big.”

And for many faculty members around the area, that’s exactly what has inspired them to get involved, Newlon said.

“We can work together to create something that benefits all institutions,” she said. C-Lab “is a blank canvas, and we all have tons of paint.”

Colorado School of Mines football signed 31 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Feb. 5, welcoming the next generation of players to Marv Kay Stadium.
