Open Space could take over fairgrounds

Davis to reccomend that option to county commissioners as discussions continue

A 4-H staff member’s idea to transfer responsibility for the Jefferson County Fairgrounds from the county general fund to Jefferson County Open Space could be a “very viable possibility” for keeping at least some portions of the fairgrounds running, Jefferson County Manager Don Davis said during a public meeting on Jan. 28.

Davis’ statements came in response to a comment made by Jefferson County 4-H Mentor Program Coordinator Lisa Stavig during a meeting held at the fairgrounds to provide residents and fairgrounds stakeholders a chance to brainstorm and share ideas to save the fairgrounds, which the county has been considering as it prepares to make $12.5 million in cuts to its general fund.

Stavig’s idea was for Jefferson County Open Space to take responsibility for the fairgrounds and then enter into an agreement with a non-profit organization that would be responsible for running it. A similar model is used at Dinosaur Ridge, which is run by the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge group under

Transferring the fairgrounds from the general fund to Jefferson County Open Space would be advantageous, Stavig suggested, because Jefferson County Open Space is not subject to the same Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights restrictions on revenue as the general fund that have led to the need to make budget cuts to that fund while also currently hamstringing the fairground’s ability to take in revenue from events held there because that revenue counts against that cap.

“This general fund has to do what only government can do and I think a foundation can run this and maybe do

better,” Stavig said.

Davis said he agreed with that assertion. Toward the end of the meeting, he told the crowd that had filled the Green Mountain conference room inside the Fairground’s Exhibit Hall to well past capacity for the second straight week that he planned to tell the county commissioners that he was now planning to recommend that the commissioners pursue transferring the fairgrounds to Jefferson County Open Space at their meeting on Feb. 4.

Davis had previously said that he would recommend the county cease operation of the fairgrounds, which would save the general fund $1.8 million, if a viable option for keeping the facility operating without continuing to burden the general fund could not be identified.

“The status quo doesn’t get us there, an enterprise doesn’t get us there and shutting down the fairgrounds is not a good option,” Davis said as he explained why he would make that recommendation. “So coming up an answer that involves [Jefferson County Open Space director] Tom Hoby and his staff and how we can come up with some viable solution will be my recommendation to the board moving forward.”

Buildings an obstacle But while Davis and Hoby, who also spoke at the meeting, agreed that such an option could likely provide a workable solution for keeping the fairgrounds open, they both said such

a course of action could also present challenges that would likely require the fairgrounds to look and operate differently than it currently does.

“We are very building averse because buildings cost a lot of money to run,” Hoby said of Jefferson County Open Space. “That’s one of the concerns we have when we acquire any property and when you look at the fairgrounds budget $525,000 of it is interdepartmental expenses which is largely to operate buildings.”

Both Davis and Hoby agreed that that reality would likely mean that ownership of only the buildings at the fairgrounds that are most essential to the agriculture and horse activities residents have indicated they are most concerned about protecting would likely be able to be included in a deal with Jefferson County Open Space.

“This would be an effort to make sure that we retain the essential services out here based on community input,” Davis said. “Now I can guarantee you that the answer won’t be the entire fairgrounds.

But to make sure 90 percent of what you want is retained to make sure your kids and the things you know and love are out here that would be the goal.”

Another potential challenge would be requirements in the rules governing Jefferson County Open Space that any activities held at the fairgrounds would need to be “not-for-profit.” However, Hoby said it would likely be possible for SEE FAIRGROUNDS, P3

the fairgrounds to charge a fee for some activities to be held at the fairgrounds that are consistent with Jefferson County Open Space’s community mission.

Both Hoby and Davis also suggested that “the devil would likely be in the details” when it came to the impact such a plan would have but that the

process to transfer the fairgrounds would seek to iron out those types of issues as much as possible. However, that process would require a serious effort to determine what is most important at the fairgrounds and prioritizing a way forward based on those determinations “If we are going to say all of it then we are still at square one,” Davis said.

“If we are going to say these things are the most important and then prioritize as we go through that’s where we get to preserving the things that are most important and talking about what to do with the things that are not important.”

Big Entities Target Mobile Home Parks, the Last Bastion of Affordable Living

I just finished watching John Oliver’s riff on mobile homes. If you’re not familiar with his HBO show “Last Week Tonight” or don’t get HBO, the good news is that his single topic take-outs* are archived on YouTube, so just Google “John Oliver mobile homes” and you’ll be glued to your computer screen for an unending series of take-outs that only starts with his take-out on mobile homes.

Here’s what I learned from watching John Oliver’s piece and was able to confirm by talking to others. Sometimes I wish I could be a full-time journalist again so I could really do investigative reporting, but I’m a Realtor now and have to depend on others like John Oliver and David Migoya of the Denver Post doing the heavy lifting. So, instead, Google is my friend. And there’s so much to learn just by Googling.

The big trend in mobile homes is the influx of big corporations like Warren Buffett’s Clayton Homes in the mobile home park business. Historically, such parks were “mom and pop” operations, but it was

inevitable that mom and pop got old and, even if their children had an interest in taking over the family business, it was more profitable to sell the park to a developer or to a company like Clayton Homes.

What makes a mobile home park a great investment is that, while people own their mobile or “manufactured” home, they rent or lease the land on which it sits. The land owner can raise the rental fee without limit because, while the home can technically be moved, it would cost thousands of dollars to do so, and there’s little choice of where to move it. You can’t just buy a lot somewhere and put your mobile home on it. I checked with Jefferson County, and you can only install a mobile home on land zoned for mobile home parks. That rule feeds right into the greed motivating those corporations which, like Clayton Homes, are buying up every mobile home park they can.

Another thing about mobile homes is that, while they can be really nice when they’re brand new, they

Prior to the oil embargo of 1973, home builders did not concern themselves much with making homes energy efficient, but that all changed as we quickly realized how dependent we were on foreign countries for fossil fuels to heat our homes and fuel our cars. Homes built before then were poorly insulated, drafty and less healthy. (Lead-based paint was only banned in 1978.)

The passive house concept took off in America as a result of that wake-up call. The “Lo-Cal” house created in 1976 consumed 60% less energy than the standard house at the time, and the concept continues to mature.

If you participated in any of the “green home” tours we co-sponsor each fall, you have learned about various passive home strategies in addition to the more common “active” strategies such as solar power, heat

pumps, geothermal heating, and energy recovery ventilators.

When “active” systems are incorporated in a home with passive house design, they work more easily to create the ultimate goal of a “net zero energy” home — one which generates all the energy needed to heat, cool and power the home and, perhaps, charge the owner’s electric vehicles. Without passive house design features, you can still achieve net zero energy, but it may require substantially more solar power to compensate for such factors as inferior orientation, fenestration (windows) and insulation.

Passive House Technology Underlies Going ‘Net Zero Energy’

do not appreciate in value like regular homes. Rather, they decline in value like a car or like the “personal property” they are. Also, since they’re not “real property,” you can’t get a mortgage on them for 4% over 30 years, you get a chattel loan at 15% over a shorter term.

Thus, if a mobile home owner can’t afford an increase in land rental for their home, their only choice often is to simply abandon the home that they paid thousands of dollars to buy. Since it becomes abandoned property, the mobile park owner can then assume ownership of it, or scrape it depending only on what makes financial sense. And down the road (so to speak), they can kick out the remaining occupants and sell the entire mobile park to a developer.

This is a heartless process, but it’s how our free enterprise system works. So, what can be done about it?

Last month, Golden United sponsored a public meeting on the subject of manufactured housing which I attended, along with several city councilors and civic minded people. Sadly, only a handful of the attendees were residents of a mobile home park.

The main presentation was by an organization which organizes residents of mobile homes parks to form an owner’s association which might then outbid other buyers of the park when the current owner attempts to sell it. This organization, called Resident Owned Communities (ROC), was featured briefly in John Oliver’s piece.. (Fast forward to 13:10.)

What local governments could do to address the problem, Oliver said, was to legislate a “right of first refusal” by which an owner’s association or other nonprofit entity serving the interests of mobile home park owners, would be able to match any bona fide offer by a for-profit buyer, and purchase the mobile home park.

I’m not aware of any such legislation or other public policy aimed at protecting what is, after all, the last bastion of affordable housing in most cities.

Mobile home parks have few friends among owners of conventional real estate, but however you might feel about them, I hope you feel they are worth preserving.

In a single day, Arvada K-8 student Nicolas Sanchez logs onto his Chromebook in almost every class.

The eighth grader accesses online resources during his reading and history classes. He uses his Chromebook to keep a digital journal in writing class and to translate phrases in Spanish class. He ends the day with science class, where he and his classmates use online tools to create presentations and complete projects.

Whatever work he hasn’t completed during the day, he can do after school when he brings his laptop home, he said.

For Sanchez — as is the case for many of his eighth grade classmates — “I’m on my laptop for six to seven hours a day,” he said.

Arvada K-8 was one of dozens of Jeffco schools to receive school-issued Chromebooks, known as 1:1 devices, in the 2019 semester. The district devices are issued to students to be used for classwork at school and home.

How it works The initiative is the first districtwide effort to uniformize technology from school to school. Some schools like Arvada K-8, Alameda International Jr./Sr. High and Golden High School were already issuing devices to students, independently of the district initiative, and will continue this until the district rollout is complete in 2023. Then, schools will repurpose the older devices, Bazzanella said.

“Even though we’re teaching kids who are essentially digital natives, they don’t necessarily know how to use technology for research,” he said.

At Alameda, STEM teacher Bobby Mangiameli said 1:1 devices and the digital tools have allowed his curriculum to evolve. In his STEM classes, students have used 3D building simulators; created websites; and made their own podcasts with the digital tools.

Without year-round shelter, Arvada homeless ‘tossed back and forth’ Homeless population speaks on needs during Point in Time Survey

John Woolsey has been robbed seven times in the last year while staying in Arvada. He’s been in the city for about four years, sleeping at severe weather shelters on nights they are open, and sleeping outside when the shelters are closed.

At the shelters, he knows his belongings are safe, he said; falling asleep outside, however, he has no guarantee that his bag won’t be gone when he wakes up.

“I find an area I want to sleep and hide my stuff,” but this strategy is not always successful, he said. And when he loses a bag, he also typically loses “an extra pair of pants, an extra shirt, an extra pair of dry socks. Anything warm to put on.”

Jefferson County does not have a year-round homeless shelter that opens every night. The Severe Weather Shelter Network open only when nightly temperatures fall below

20 degrees, or 32 degrees with wet conditions. The network consists of community groups, agencies and churches.

In Arvada, some churches also offer daytime services. The Rising Church in Olde Town, for instance, provides a daytime shelter on weekdays and intermittent resources like food and medical services.

But without a consistent place to sleep and safely store belongings at night, many in Arvada find themselves waking up missing a bag, or worse.

“When your whole life is in a bag and it gets stolen, it really puts a strain on you,” said Anthony, who has lived in Arvada for about seven years.

He prefers not to use his last name for privacy reasons.

“It’s like being teased. You go good for a week and then you’re stuck out there in the weekend,” he said. “And then you wake up and your bags are gone, with your bus pass and your ID, and you’ve got to start all over.”

To raise awareness about the extent of homelessness in the metro area, promote collaboration efforts and potentially pave the way for more resources, the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative conducts its Point in Time (PIT) survey each year. During the survey, which this year ran the night of Jan. 27 through the day of Jan. 28, volunteers in seven counties across the Denver metro area interviewed homeless individuals in the community.

“We ask about how long they’ve been homeless, what the causes have been, health conditions,” said Mindy Mohr, a PIT volunteer and member of the Permanent Supportive Housing Subcommittee of Heading Home Jeffco, which brings organizations together to end homelessness.

“Everyone has a story of why they’re in the situation they’re in,” Mohr said.

PIT surveyors visited the severe weather shelter in Olde Town Jan. 27, which opened at Cornerstone Church of God on Yarrow Street. Volunteers included individuals from Spirit of Christ Catholic Church, community group A Stronger Cord and others, there to serve shelter residents and complete the count.

Christ, PIT night was one of many he’s spent working in the shelter. He and his daughter Erica, a sophomore at Ralston Valley High School, often help check people in and serve dinner at the shelter.

“The basic foundation of life is having warmth, shelter and food,” Danny said. Having grown up in a family of nine, he knows what it’s like to be in need, and the cause is important to him, he said.

“These people are shunned by society, so that’s why I do it,” he said.

“They’re special to me.”

Erica agreed.

“People should be comfortable, especially when it’s cold outside,” she said.

“Even little steps at a time like this

make a big difference.”

Residents at the shelter, like Woolsey and Anthony, said they support efforts like the PIT. They hope that the picture painted by the survey may lead to future grants and resources for the community.

“It’d be better to get something more consistent,” Anthony said, pointing to organizations that provide shelter each night, like Samaritan House Denver.

“If you don’t have somewhere where you can have consistency, you’re just going to be tossed back and forth,” he said. “But if you had a controlled environment, there’s a lot of people that could really do better in a quickerpaced manner.”

Council to rehear Grandview Station appeal Hearing must include developer’s perspective, councilmembers say

With a Dec. 16 council decision to overturn the planning commission’s approval of Grandview Station, it appeared a months-long Arvada debate had come to an end. But at its Jan. 27 meeting, council voted to rehear the matter they heard back in December.

Grandview Station is a proposed three-story condo and retail development, which developer Keane Palmer would build on his properties at 7315 and 7317 Grandview Ave. and 7318 W. 57th Ave. The project would demolish the 20th century houses currently located there, with Palmer having offered to move those houses if another property-owner would provide land for the relocation.

At the December hearing, the appellant, businessowner Lori Drienka, presented reasons to council about why the planning commission’s approval of the project should be overturned; the city presented reasons the decision should be upheld. Palmer, the developer, did not speak at the hearing.

Drienka’s change.org petition had accrued 1,683 signatures as of Jan. 28 and hundreds of others signed a paper petition at Drienka’s store, Drienka previously told the Arvada Press.

Drienka and other opponents say the proposed development veers too far from Olde Town’s design guidelines. The 33.5-foot building would detract from the historic aesthetic of the area and could potentially threaten Olde Town’s status as a recognized historic district, Drienka said.

Supporters of the project feel it will revitalize Grandview Avenue and that the historic houses have deteriorated, posing aesthetic and safety concerns.

Those in favor also believe the new businesses and retail units will be an economic benefit.

In August, the city’s community and economic development director, Ryan Stachelski, issued a certificate of compliance stating Palmer’s proposal met Olde Town design guidelines. The certificate allowed for some waivers approved by Arvada’s Design Review Committee.

Included among the waivers was the decision to allow the historic houses to be replaced by a building that would have a larger impact on its surroundings.

Drienka appealed Stachelski’s decision on Nov. 5 to the planning commission, which upheld the decision. On Dec. 16, however, Drienka appealed the planning commission’s ruling to city

council, which overturned the decision with a 3-3 vote.

Councilmembers Dot Miller, John Marriott and David Jones voted to uphold the commission’s decision while Fifer, Mayor Marc Williams and councilmember Lauren Simpson voted to overturn it. Councilmember Nancy Ford recused herself from the vote because she had signed Drienka’s petition.

On Jan. 27, council discussed whether it should hold a rehearing to allow Palmer an opportunity to present his case.

“Advice was given to the applicant (Palmer) in terms of how to proceed,” Williams said, suggesting that Palmer did not present that night at the city’s suggestion. At the time, city staff thought this was the best approach because it would match the procedure of the planning commission hearing, he said.

“We had never had this kind of hearing before, in my 20 years on city council, of an appeal of a planning director’s decision,” he said. “I think there was a learning curve.”

At the Jan. 27 meeting, a handful of residents and Palmer spoke in support of a rehearing and a handful of residents, including Drienka, spoke against it.

Resident Cindi Kreutzer suggested the first hearing “was hard to follow, so it’s imperative we do it again.”

For resident Jennifer Enochs, to hold a rehearing would be to ignore that “the people of Arvada have spoken over and over again. We’ve had three hearings so far,” she said.

“People don’t want (Grandview Station) to happen.”

The historic houses that sit on properties 7315, 7317 and 7318 Grandview Ave. The houses will be torn down and replaced with a retail and housing development, if the current owner’s development plan called Grandview Station, wins its appeal hearing.

A motion to hold a rehearing passed 6-0, with Ford recusing herself for the same reason she did on Dec. 16.

City attorney Rachel Morris said the city will now reach out to Palmer and Drienka to organize a date for the rehearing.

“I will be supporting a rehearing, but that certainly is not any indication of how I intend to vote as to the full matter. I have some unanswered questions,” Williams said, and “I want to make sure that our process was truly fair to all parties.”

Arvada man’s lawsuit claims excessive force Police say force was justified during arrest

A 24-year-old Arvada man has filed a lawsuit against the city of Arvada and three of its police officers, claiming police used excessive force against him when he was arrested in a domestic assault investigation, Feb. 2018.

The Jan. 27 lawsuit claims that police falsified information in their reports to justify the force used by officers Brandon Valdez, Scott Thomas and Ryan Clark.

Arvada Police issued a statement saying the man, Travis Cook, “resisted officers when they attempted to place him under arrest, so officers were required to use force to protect the alleged victim and to take Mr. Cook into custody.”

According to the police report from Cook’s 2018 arrest, officers were dispatched to the home of Cook’s thengirlfriend and her parents. Her mother contacted police during a loud argument between Cook and his girlfriend, who were in the basement of the house, the report said.

Cook’s girlfriend is said to have told officers she’d been arguing with Cook and had kicked him off of their bed.

She alleged that Cook retaliated by tackling her to the ground and choking her. The young woman told police

Kellogg allegedly told Thome “that what Mr. Cook had repeatedly told him was that Mr. Cook just wanted to get some fresh air … not that he had hit Defendant Valdez,” the lawsuit said.

Thome is said to have interviewed the victim’s father, “who said that he had a clear view of the entire incident and that he never saw Mr. Cook hit Defendant Valdez,” the lawsuit said. “Sergeant Thome left this statement out of his report.”

These instances “evidence Arvada’s practice of ratifying, condoning, and covering up the use of excessive force,” it says.

Additionally, the lawsuit claims that Valdez had a minimum of 21 prior incidents of potential excessive force since 2011. It says that Valdez had undergone a “use of force review” each year since 2011, and these reviews only occur when an officer uses potential excessive force three times in a year.

But Arvada detective Dave Snelling said these reviews occur when officers use any amount of force three times in one year. This often includes force used “during an arrest or pursuit,” he said.

“All of those may be justified.”

Cook seeks monetary damages, declaratory relief and injunctive relief, with the complaint filed in United States District Court.

St. Anne students’ donation will help veterans in need School raises $1,400 for Wounded Warrior Project

An effort at the Shrine of St. Anne School that began last year came to fruition at the end of January, when students donated $1,400 to the Wounded Warrior Project.

The students at the Shrine of St. Anne, 7320 Grant Pl., have spent months planning a fundraising effort to benefit the national organization. The Wounded Warrior Project provides wellness services and other programming for veterans wounded during their time of service.

The school raised about $625 on Veterans Day, with students donating a minimum of one dollar to wear patriotic clothing instead of their school uniforms. The school then set a goal to raise at least $375 by the end of Catholic Schools Week, which began Jan. 26.

“We went through a lot of organizations we could donate to and chose this because there are a lot of veterans who are not recognized for what they’ve done,” said eighth grade student Alex Potter, who worked with his classmates to plan the fundraising effort.

“My favorite part has been planning it with everyone,” he said. “It’s

bringing the school together.”

Throughout the week, students ran several fundraisers, including another out-of-uniform day on which students wore athletic gear, a bake sale and a basketball tournament.

The project is part of the school’s ongoing Faith in Action initiative, through which “our students learn the beauty of the call of Catholics to serve the poor, less fortunate or suffering,” said principal Theresa Donahue.

Previous projects included a donation last year to the Arvada Police Department, when the school raised money for two heavy armor vests provided by nonprofit SHIELD616.

On behalf of his class, eighth-grade student Landon Hood spoke to the Arvada City Council Jan. 27, detailing previous projects and the school’s plans to keep helping the community.

“We like to support our heroes, whether that means US military, retired or active duty soldiers. We also appreciate our local Arvada police.

As a Catholic school, we always try our best to help others,” he said, and “we do not intend to stop in the future.”

A perfect place for those who love cats and toes

rnest Hemingway kept sixtoed cats at his home, now a museum, in Key West, Florida.

They’re called “polydactyl cats.”

The Ernest QUIET Hemingway Home and Museum curDESPERATION rently has 40-50 polydactyl cats roaming around.

Cats normally have five front toes and four back toes.

Six-toed cats were often taken on ships for two reasons: They were good at ridding rodents, and Craig Marshall they were thought Smith to be lucky.

Hemingway was given his first polydactyl cat, named Snow White,

by a ship captain.

In general, people are thought to prefer dogs or cats, not both.

I prefer dogs, and I prefer a specific breed. I am on my fourth (and final) Dachshund.

I don’t hold much with folklore, as fascinating as it is. I doubt if Hexe, Badger, Smitty or Harry have brought me greater luck than the fortune of knowing them.

Harry has allergies. Determining what they were was expensive.

Bloodwork was done and sent to a laboratory in Mesa, Arizona. The results came back in a book that looked like the one Ralph Edwards used to read from on “This Is Your Life.”

There were pages of possible allergies with checked and unchecked boxes next to them.

The main culprit, we determined,

was oats.

But there were others: rap music, Fox News, hat check girls who wear tons of makeup, and wedding receptions.

Harry now eats a prescription diet. The dry and hard food cannot be purchased without a prescription.

He takes a pill a day too.

None of this has brought me luck.

But, as I said, knowing him does.

How does your dog or cat look to you these days?

My guess is your dog or cat looks better than ever.

Harry and I read the newspaper together each and every morning.

I look at the front page and moan, groan, mumble and mutter, and all he does is give me two brown eyes that shine with the bliss of joyful ignorance.

We recently moved to Arvada (Sept.

2018) and live in the Alta Vista neighborhood. We really enjoy our community and our neighbors (and our grandchildren, who are the reason we retired to Colorado).

We have been puzzled by the large number and variety of garbage and recycling trucks cruising down our street on a near-daily basis. We have never experienced such a system before. Everywhere else we have lived has had a single carrier, either on a city-wide basis (with either cityoperated or contracted services with a single carrier) or on a neighborhoodwide basis (as with an HOA contracted service) for a single carrier per neighborhood.

We understand that the city of Arvada is considering a move to consolidated waste/recycling/compostable pickup services either on a city-wide or neighborhood-based collection system. e are writing to encourage you to adopt such a system. We believe this would reduce the truck traffic in our neighborhoods, improve the services available to residents, and reduce costs as the city of Arvada could negotiate better with carriers. We also believe this would be good for our environment and economics as such a system could reduce the amount of recyclable and compostable materials being sent to landfills. Taylor and Mavis Jarnagin, Arvada Pass ROPA Colorado’s national parks are seeing record visitation, but unreliable funding over the years means their infrastructure desperately needs to be repaired.

That’s why I am encouraged by a bipartisan proposal in Congress to address the nearly $12 billion in national parks deferred maintenance. The Restore Our Parks Act (ROPA) would set aside $6.5 billion over the next five years to fix dilapidated trails, buildings, roads, bridges, monuments, and historic markers in our parks. Amazingly, 50 U.S. Senators — from both parties — are cosponsoring this effort, with 330 representatives supporting a similar measure in the House.

With all this support, you would think this would be an easy thing for Congress to get done. You’d be mistaken. Despite all the support for national parks, Congress is still struggling to enact this popular legislation.

Yet another ‘old guy’ body betrayal

o, I recently injured myself.

I would love to say it was a great story, that I was engaged in some amazing feat of athletic prowess and simply pushed my body beyond the limits of what the human body is supposed to do.

But, no. I was taking a step back- HITTING wards.

HOME Sure, I was playing basketball at the time, but all I was doing, at the moment of truth, was turning around to catch the inbounds pass.

After giving up a basket to my guy.

Injury to insult.

That’s when I felt Michael Alcorn something in the bottom of my foot go “pop,” and that’s that. Ruptured plantar fascia. Crutch for four weeks. No normal activities for six weeks.

There are many bad parts of this, not the least of which is this is a quintessentially “old guy” kind of injury. This is not the sort of thing

that happens to 30 year olds. High ankle sprains, pulled hamstrings, torn Achilles … these things happen to young athletes. Ruptured plantar fascia, that’s an old guy thing.

But I have to say the worst part is that something so small and, to be honest, inconsequential to me for the first 50 years of my life has completely disrupted my world. I really had no idea how inconvenient this could be.

To not be able to trust your feet is a troubling thing for a guy who likes to take the stairs two or three at a time, and who (on account of always running late) tends to hop over things and move at a half jog most of my life. Not to mention how hard it is to operate with only one hand.

As I go from school to school for my job, I carry a backpack and at least one musical instrument, and, as I’m exiting my car, I usually throw things over my shoulder while walking away from the car after kicking the car door shut, only pointing the keys back to lock the doors once I’ve hit my stride.

Not so much these days.

The article seems to intimate since we voters didn’t overrule TABOR to raise taxes, that that is the reason fairground closures could be a possibility.

I submit that all Jeffco services ran smoother and at a higher level with lower budgets before bureaucracy and bloated programs and administration infiltrated the scene.

I think that’s why I have the limited view of government that I do. I don’t want the government to do all that much. But, dang it, do the things you do really well, please.

We count on the government to keep food and water safe. Ask the people of Flint, Michigan what happens when you can’t trust what comes out of your faucet. We count on the government to keep the roads safe and functional.

And, as I’ve written about once or twice this year already (and am likely to want to write about more after this week’s storm), when those aren’t working right, it really throws us off. We want the government to keep the lights on, the keep the communication systems operational, and to keep us informed

Recent polls show support for Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and others who promise a world of “free stuff ” just by making others pay for it. Why is it that they have not learned from the experiences of Cuba, North Korea, China, East Germany, and Venezuela, let alone the suffering of the Russian people? How can a socialist walk into a grocery store and think “Gee, I sure hate capitalism”?

Is there been a deficit in our educational system that fails to teach the reasons for the success of the United States? We did not become one of the richest and freest nations on earth due to socialism. Why would we want to take steps backward? Why does the left

When those pieces of the puzzle aren’t working, none of the rest of the civilization holds together. And, for me, I prefer a government that focuses on keeping those things working. Save your crusades against plastic straws and campaigns to provide free needles to illegal drug users for that day and time when everything else is ship shape. I want government to focus on being able to walk from one place to another with minimal assistance before it worries about the color of accessories it puts on civilization.

The simple things have to work. If we can’t manage that, if we spend our time getting caught up in trivialities, well, maybe that explains why our society is almost all as grumpy as I am these days.

Help for the homeless The NO votes against Proposition CC were about 15% of Colorado registered voters, but they won and kept TABOR money from paying for needed projects. Money was to go for public schools and higher education, which

has been reduced. Colorado real estate property taxes are the fourth lowest in the US, while Colorado is the fifth richest state in per-capita income. Colorado ranks 23rd on overall education indicators and well below the national average on K-12 teachers pay. Money is needed to repair the transportation infrastructure and increase capacity.

Only 11 states have lower gas taxes and Colorado ranks 35th in state and local income tax rates.

The NO votes against Jeffco Proposition 1A were 24.3% of registered voters and they blocked money for more jail beds (Jeffco has had to release inmates early because of budget cuts) and for needed improvements to the transportation infrastructure. When the ban on tent camps in Denver is lifted, money will be needed to provide more shelters for the homeless. The winning minority and the apathetic majority of voters are starving the state, county and city of funds that are desperately needed to maintain quality of life in our state.

seem to have such disrespect for law and order? The left leaning cities that are developing vagrancy and sanitation problems and failing to prosecute misdemeanor offences (including shoplifting) are slowly becoming uninhabitable for average citizens.

Isn’t it time to take a look at our children’s school curriculum, to take a closer look at those running for office who want to take the same liberal stand as those legislators in San Francisco and other deteriorating cities, and to more closely evaluate current legislation which would lead us down this path? This is not the time to give up our rights, it is the time to protect them.

Comedy shows adjust to outlying audiences

hen local comedian Michael Jeffries stepped up to the mic at Max Taps Brewery in Highlands Ranch, the room was filled with a variety of suburbanites.

Folks just getting off work, couples young and old, friend groups and beer lovers filed into the seats in the back room of the brewery on Jan. 25. Minutes before, the room was occupied by a crowd from a funeral reception.

Jeffries, 29, who produces and hosts the show, opened with a joke apologizing for his appearance.

“I made the mistake of sleeping on my hair last night,” he said. “I know I should start sleeping on a mattress instead, but mattresses are expensive and the hair is free if you don’t ask any stupid (expletive) questions.”

When Jeffries first started the suburban showcase, he was asked to only book comics who will remain clean and non-political. The crowds in the suburbs tend to skew older and more conservative, after all.

“Just because you live in the suburbs doesn’t mean you don’t like to laugh,” Jeffries said. “Even if the joke is dirty … or even against your political beliefs.”

Jeffries is just one of the Denverbased comedians capitalizing on the fact that while everyone enjoys laughing, not everyone wants to sit in an

hour of traffic to do it.

A world away While solid comedy is generally successful everywhere, there are some big differences between the suburban and urban comedy scenes. Those distinctions just might be the reason downtown’s shows are experiencing huge growth and the outskirts are seeing a slower uptick.

This year’s Denver Jewish Film Festival presented by Sturm Family Foundation runs at the Elaine Wolf Theatre at the JCC, 350 S. Dahlia St. in Denver, runs from Wednesday, Feb. 5 through Wednesday, Feb. 19. The festival features 43 films, both feature-length and short, with numerous regional premieres.

“We have two different volunteer committees that work on deciding which films should be shown. Our selection committee of 11 people watched more than 500 minutes of film every two weeks from May through October to narrow down all the submissions,” Weiner Weiss said. “The films we have this year are some of the strongest we’ve ever had in the festival.”

This year’s lineup includes films from 12 countries and tell a huge swath of stories. There are biographical films on well-known figures like “Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People” and “King Bibi,” a World War II spy story (“The Spy Behind Home Plate”), satires of current events (“Tel Aviv on Fire”) and “Sustainable Nation,” which examines efforts to bring water solutions to areas facing drought.

For starters, the suburbs are much more spread out, meaning ride-sharing services can get expensive quickly, said Wende Curtis, owner of Comedy Works, which has locations in downtown Denver and Greenwood Village.

Curtis opened up Comedy Works’ suburban club in 2008 after market research showed that’s where the bulk of people are moving, she said.

“It’s 13 1/2 miles from the original location downtown … but it’s a world away,” she said.

Even if suburban crowds still like to laugh at the not-so-clean jokes, producers still tend to book people who lean away from dirtier humor in their sets.

“My philosophy is on a Saturday night if I’ve got tickets available and people can walk in and buy a ticket, I want to appeal to (our audience),” Curtis said. “Chances are you might get somebody a little edgier walking

And “Standing Up, Falling Down,” is a hilarious and nuanced buddy dramedy starring Billy Crystal and Ben Schwartz.

As is often the case with film festivals, one of the real treats is attending the various filmmaker and expert discussions and events following screenings. A particular highlight will be at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, with the premiere of “Keh Hee Lah,” which was made by University of Denver student Myles Goldstein and features a roundtable of local Jewish leaders.

Ultimately, it’s that community-building and connection that is the primary goal of the festival.

Another factor challenging the comedy scene in the suburbs is the demographics. Josue Flores, a Denverbased comedy producer, describes his target ticket buyer as between the ages of 21 and 34. In the city center, there’s a higher density of this group. A few miles from downtown, the crowds tend to skew a little older, more conservative and less diverse, Flores said.

That’s why the suburbs tend to be a place where local comics can really put their jokes to the test said Korey David, a local comedian and producer.

“The suburban rooms are where you find out what your material actually is,” David said. “It’s easy to pander to audiences in the urban area because everyone agrees with you.”

David, who hosts a traveling show called “Rotating Taps” at breweries in places like Centennial, Lakewood and Parker, has realized you often have to start safe at the suburban shows, he said. That’s because many people in

these areas have never seen a show like this.

“You’re just dealing with different types of people who are going to find different types of comedy funny,” he said. “Once you start getting repeat customers, then you can take more risks.”

David also hosts a regular show in Arvada called Hootenanny, which combines live music and comedy.

“A lot of times people think it will be rough (in the suburbs) but it’s actually quite the opposite,” he said.

In Parker, stand-up comedian Rion Evans and improv comedian Grant Garrison are also both working to distinguish the small town as a strong place for comedy.

“I want to turn Parker into the city that’s known for having the best comedy scene in Colorado,” Garrison said. “I don’t want to commute for my comedy.”

“You don’t have to be Jewish to attend. The festival is such a great opportunity for us to open our doors and arms to each other, and support each other,” Weiner Weiss said. “The films speak to all difference experiences, and all attendees will be able to enjoy and share in our common humanity.”

“When you’re older, you’re more selective,” Curtis said. “You just want to see who you want to see.”

Another reason the community hasn’t taken off more is because of a lack of open mics for people to try out comedy for the first time, said Harrison Garcia, another local comic working the suburban crowds.

“I wouldn’t say that any places in (suburban Denver) have their own distinct scene,” he said, “Most of the time a comedy scene needs a few venues that are willing to regularly host not only shows but open mics allowing new comics to try things out.”

As Denver and its comedy scene continue to grow, spaces like the ones Garcia described will continue to pop up, Curtis said. But will the same happen in the suburbs?

“I think the more urban (shows) are going to have a better success rate than the suburban ones, but you know, eventually something’s going to stick,” Curtis said. “Build it and they will come and if it’s strong enough … they’re going to come back.” of Women’s Suffrage in the United States,” from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13.

Two honored by Arvada chamber

The Arvada Chamber of Commerce recognized its 2019 Business of the Year and Nonprofit of the Year this January, highlighting two organizations with missions to reach underserved populations in the community.

The business award went to Jack’s Bar and Grill & Steamers Coffeehouse, a restaurant and coffee shop located at 8565 Five Parks Drive. The nonprofit award was given to BeyondHome, formerly Colorado Homeless Families.

The winners were recognized at the chamber’s annual dinner on Jan. 24.

Additionally, the nonprofit of the year received a $500 donation.

Owned by Jack and Athan Miller, Jack’s “has been an Arvada favorite for over a decade” and was recognized for its “mission of hiring and training special needs individuals,” a chamber media release said.

The restaurant currently employs about 40 individuals with disabilities on a staff of an estimated 130 people, said program director Sarah Smith, who oversees the business’s employment of people with intellectual disabilities.

“We set out to show you could run a successful business while employing people with disabilities, and this award is proof we’re doing that,” Smith said.

“One of the biggest factors of our success is the community we’re in. Arvada is so inclusive and welcoming.”

businesses to employ individuals with disabilities, Smith said. She encouraged any business interested to reach out to Jack’s, or any business employing individuals with disabilities, to learn more about the support available.

The release also praised BeyondHome, which has been in Arvada for more than 30 years. The nonprofit partners with a number of other groups, including the Arvada Housing Authority and Red Rocks Community College, to help homeless individuals achieve self-sufficiency.

BeyondHome provides 40 affordable apartments for families to stay in; offers a variety of courses on careerbuilding and a healthy lifestyle; and oversees members’ community service efforts.

The organization also offers a number of services to low-income children in Arvada, such as tutoring and summer enrichment activities, said Executive Director Karen Allen.

Allen said the award couldn’t have come at a better time, as the recognition has allowed BeyondHome to spread the word of its change in name Jan. 1.

One of the reasons for the name change was to ensure participants’ involvement is “something they can be proud of,” Allen said.

“Our families do really hard work while they’re here, and they do really good work,” she said. “We want them to have the dignity they deserve.”

Arvada West girls hoops continues to rise in 5A Jeffco

ARVADA — Amanda Neff is making a name for herself while following in the footsteps at of her older brothers — Thomas and Luke — at Arvada West High School.

“It’s cool to have my brothers and stuff,” Amanda said of her two brothers that had stellar careers at A-West before both played at the University of Denver. “But I want to make my own name too.”

Neff had her breakout game Feb. 1 on the Wildcats’ home court against Dakota Ridge. The sophomore poured in a career-high 29 points to lead A-West to a 64-47 victory.

“She (Neff) had a complete basketball game today,” A-West coach Brady Meeks said. “That’s what I’ve been expecting from her all year. It’s nice to see that come out in a big league win for us today. It wasn’t just her scoring today. She did a great job on defense and gobbled up her (rebounds) like she normally does. She was making the right basketball decisions.”

A-West (11-6, 2-1 in Class 5A Jeffco) had a decent first half, but trailed Dakota Ridge 7-9, 1-2) at halftime — 25-22.

The Wildcats took the lead early in the third quarter when they scored five points over the span of a second.

Sophomore Jasmyn Williams, who hit her career-high with 18 points, made a layup and was fouled. Williams missed the free throw, but junior Madison Manson grabbed the rebound, scored and was able to convert her 3-point play.

Westminster ladies basketball too much for Pomona

It’s been a fun year for Westminster ladies basketball under coach Jeff Dennis, especially at home. Improving to 6-2 in the friendly confines of their home court Jan. 28, the Lady Wolves pounded Pomona (8-8) 74-37 to move to 11-6 on the season.

“When we were playing Wheat Ridge at the beginning of the season in a tournament for the (Westminster Winter Classic) championship (Dec. 6), it was the first time coaching this group where I sat back and actually got to enjoy their ball movement and their spacing,” Dennis said after the game last Tuesday. “Tonight was a similar story. With these girls having played together for so long now, they know each other’s tendencies, and it’s showing all over the court.”

It all began in a dominant first quarter in which Westy allowed just four points thanks to their pressure and activity on the defensive end. Leading out to easy baskets, the home team led by 13 going to the second in part to reserve junior Lauren Graves Bonilla.

The versatile guard made her presence felt with a team-high six points in the first before adding four more in the second frame in helping the Lady Wolves pour on 28 points to claim a commanding 26-point advantage. Westy sophomore Marina Boltz and senior Valerie Gallegos tallied 12 and nine points apiece in the frame as well.

“I use a couple of phrases in my program. I have energy takers and energy givers, and that girl is an energy giver on and off the court,” Dennis said of Graves Bonilla after the affair. “She just exudes passion, and she’s gritty, tough, and she’s going places.”

Also going places is this Westminster basketball program that hasn’t had a winning record since Dennis took over as head coach in the 2015-2016 season.

With only four seniors on the roster and young talent all over the place, the future is looking bright for the rest of this season, as well as the future.

In the points category, Boltz, Gallegos, and Graves Bonilla tallied 23, 18, and 16 apiece to guide the Westy offense.

“Credit goes to the girls,” Meeks said of the Wildcats outscoring the Eagles by 20 points in the second half. “They adjusted to just the simple execution items.”

Neff nearly hit the 30-point mark. She missed a free throw in the final minute that would have given her 30 points.

“I knew this was going to be a tough game and I knew we had to get going early,” Neff said after scoring a careerhigh 29 points that included two 3-pointers and going 11-for-13 from the charity stripe. “I just started scoring in the flow of the game.”

Dakota Ridge senior Emily Doolittle poured in 14 of her team-high 18 points in the second half to keep the Eagles within striking distance. However, it wasn’t enough to get the road victory.

“I think this is the first time we’ve got more than one league win in a few years,” said Meeks, who is in his second year at the helm of A-West’s girls basketball program. “I think the game against Lakewood proved we aren’t the doormat of the league anymore. I think we are moving in the right direction.”

Lakewood edged A-West 56-50 early in the week, but Brady took it as a positive that the Wildcats are a team on the rise and able to compete with some of the historically good programs in 5A Jeffco.

It’s clear the youngest Neff will be a big part of the growth that is yet to come.

“I’m really happy that this year our team and program has improved a lot,” Neff said.

Although not all inclusive, duties include operating light and heavy equipment, routine work in the upkeep and repair of grounds and buildings. Landscape maintenance, including weeding, mowing and trimming of lawns, pruning of shrubs and trees. Prepare grave sites for burials and conduct service-related activities. While shared school computers could support these projects, relying on them can lead to inequity, said Alameda digital teacher librarian Dorina Miller.

Students with personal computers could work on projects at home while the many Alameda students without home computers would only have access to projects in class, she said.

Further, said Mangiameli, “there’s more ownership when it’s yours. I see less damage because the devices aren’t being shared.”

The goal is not for students to use technology every day for every assignment, but for teachers to have those tools available when they will be more effective than pen and paper, Bazzanella said.

‘Expandability in our education’ Arvada K-8 students Amanda Donald, Carleigh Bentley and Bailey Bleskin have noticed that the take-home devices make learning easier in multiple ways.

Their grades have improved since they received the devices, they said, and they are now able to check their grades regularly online.

With their laptops, it’s easier to complete unfinished classwork at home and “if you’re going on vacation for a week, you’re able to take the device with you,” Donald said.

Alameda senior Jackson Davis likewise highlighted these practical benefits, saying most of his teachers rely on the devices; he only has one class in

While there are some similarities among the districts, each has taken a unique approach to the initiative.

In Douglas County, every schools determines what device-use will look like; some schools provide devices, while others might eliminate the traditional school supplies list and ask students to bring devices instead, said communications officer Paula Hans.

Meanwhile, Denver Public Schools has just used the 1:1 initiative at select schools. Denver Public Schools then provides extra staff in participating schools, including technical which he regularly receives paper assignments, he said.

He added that “this allows for a little bit of expandability in our education,” as the devices have transformed everyday projects. He pointed to a previous English class in which students were asked to create movie trailers for books, as opposed to a written book report.

The devices come into play even in his band classes, when students record their performances and send them in for evaluation. Classmate Stephanie Gonzalez, a freshman, said the computers are used in her choir class when students send in self-evaluations after concerts.

All students said the devices allow them to be more organized by reducing

support staff and digital coaches to help teachers effectively integrate technology into their curriculum.

Also unique, the Denver district collects the devices over summer for maintenance, said Lara Hussain, the program’s director at Denver Public Schools.

The districts all collaborate to share best practices, leading to a number of similarities from district to district, she said. Across the board, the districts share common goals as they create their programs: to promote digital literacy and ensure equity among students.

“We see technology as a fundamental right, so we want to provide equitable access and resources,” Hussain said.

REACHING OUT ABOUT 1:1 The district encourages feedback from parents and sends monthly communication to advise how they can help their students with the 1:1 devices and digital tools.

“We see our parents as partners in this process,” Bazzanella said. “We want to understand how those devices are being used at home and what challenges and opportunities are seen with that.” the number of papers and folders they need.

“It’s so much easier because it’s yours,” said Arvada K-8 seventh grader Jalissa Gamboa. “You’re taking care of it. It makes you a more mature person.”
