The road to teaching I went to Arvada West and I’m grateful I got an excellent education in Jeffco. I was really fortunate to have what I had, and Arvada was a great place to live. We go back to visit all the time.

After I graduated, I went to CU Denver and got my degree in business. I started out not going into teaching and when I did begin teaching, I had to go through an alternative pathway; I was a full-time teacher and then I went to class Monday night, so it was really a trial by fire. Later on, I helped open our new school (Mountain Range) back in 2006.

We started with 13 students, and now we have more than 400 students participating. Chocolate-themed event returning to Olde Town in February

Those looking to satisfy a chocolate craving before Valentine’s Day are

invited to Olde Town Feb. 1, where nearly 20 chocolatiers will participate in this year’s A Chocolate Affair event.

The local fundraiser runs from 11

Residents can sample chocolates for a dollar a piece, either by purchasing sampling tickets at the event or by purchasing a pack of 20 tickets for $20 at ralstonhouse.org/a-chocolateaffair.

All proceeds will go to local nonprofit Ralston House. The agency provides a safe place for children who may be in the midst of an investigation process after experiencing an abusive or violent situation. Last year, the agency served more than 1,200 families, said special events associate Jennifer Kemps.

“It’s an alternative to a police station, and a safe and healing place for those who have been victims of abuse,” she said.

The agency’s mission resonates with Debi Lansford, manager at Enstrom Candies in Arvada, 6770 W. 52nd Ave. The store participates in the event every year while also collecting donations for Ralston House throughout the beginning of the year, she said.

“We always bring our toffee since that’s what we’re known for, and we’ll

be bringing truffles and creams,” she said. “Having kids and grandchildren of my own, Ralston House is pretty near and dear to my heart. It’s needed, so it’s a very worthy thing to donate to.”

While sampling chocolates, residents and visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in the Great Arvada Bake-off. Anybody interested in participating can bring a paper plate of six cookies, brownies or cupcakes to The Rising Church gym, 7500 W. 57th Ave. Entries will be accepted from 11 a.m. to noon, with winners announced at 1:30 p.m.

The day’s events also include a craft in the library and a chocolate treasure hunt around Olde Town.

Additionally, Ralston House will be selling its Lamppost Hearts through Jan. 25. The hearts will be posted on lampposts in Olde Town for the first half of February, displaying messages written by the residents who purchased them.

CORRECTION An article in the Jan. 16 edition about Jefferson County Public Schools special education aides incorrectly described district hiring proceedure. Buyers Beware: You May Be on Candid Camera When Looking at a Home

The use of WiFi-connected cameras such as the Ring doorbell is becoming more and more common. Rita and I have both a Ring doorbell and four other cameras protecting the entrances to our home plus the garage, and the Golden Real Estate office has a total of 10 cameras covering the interior, exterior and our parking lot. Such systems are increasingly affordable and easy to set up, since they require no wiring and can be monitored on any smartphone. Their video (with sound) is motion-activated and uploaded to “the cloud” so that you can go back in time to see past activity. You can also be alerted real-time on your smartphone when motion is detected by any of the cameras.

With the widespread adoption of such internet-connected home cameras, it is becoming more and more possible for sellers to eavesdrop on buyers who tour their home. You can understand the value to a seller of hearing what you say as you look around. Imagine, for example, if you were caught on video saying to your agent, “I love this house! I’ll pay whatever I have to for it!” You wouldn’t want the seller to hear that, would you?

There are, of course, legal implications to such surveillance. On the one hand, sellers have the right to install such equipment for home security, but buyers and their agents also have a “reasonable expectation of privacy” while touring your unoccupied home.

While Colorado law allows you to record your conversations with another person secretly, that is only because you are a party to the conversation. Taping a conversation to which you are not a party is a serious matter for which you could experience both civil and criminal liability.

Every year, licensed real estate brokers are required to take a 4-hour real estate update class as an element of their continuing education requirement. This year’s class, which all Golden Real Estate agents take in January instead of later in the year, devotes 10 to 15 minutes to this topic of audio and video surveillance by sellers.

In that update class, we were instructed to advise our buyer clients that they might be under surveillance while touring a home and should be careful what they say. We were also instructed to have a conversation with sellers about this topic, advising them of the legal dangers of recording buyers. It was suggested that, if our sellers do have such equipment, we urge them to post a notice next to the doorbell or prominently inside the house to the effect that “audio and video surveillance is in use” in the house. We should also put that in the MLS listing, to protect ourselves as listing agents.

It is understandable for sellers to be concerned about strangers being escorted through their home by brokers who they do not know. When this issue is raised by a

Is Your Gas Furnace or Gas Water Heater About to Fail? Consider a Heat Pump A reader called me this week because her gas furnace had quit working and, knowing my expertise on sustainability, wanted advice on replacing it.

I told her that this was an opportunity to do something other than buy a new gas furnace. I told her about my Carrier “Hybrid Heat” furnace which uses an air-source heat pump for heating as well as cooling and only burns gas when the outdoor temperature dips well below freezing. With her solar panels, it’s possible she won’t even pay for the electricity consumed by the heat pump, and her gas consumption will plummet.

That hybrid system uses her existing ductwork, but, since she has a one-story home, I suggested she consider a ductless mini-split heat pump system like the one

we have at our office. I gave her the name of the vendor who installed both my home and office systems who could advise her which system was best for her.

I also suggested that she look into replacing her gas water heater with a heat-pump model when it fails. My gas water heater is over 15 years old, so I’m thinking of replacing it before it fails. Home Depot sells a Rheem 50-gallon heat pump water heater (XE50T10HD50U1) for $1,299, but Xcel Energy gives its customers a $500 rebate for purchasing it. I have enough solar panels to handle the extra electrical demand and eliminate much of my current gas usage, which is mostly for water heating, since I have that Carrier hybrid furnace. Our only other gas usage is for cooking and grilling.

I have been a practicing real estate broker in Colorado for nearly two decades now, showing hundreds of listings per year to prospective buyers and holding scores of open houses for my listings. I have yet to be made aware of any loss sustained by a seller or any misdeeds by my buyers.

Our low crime rate here in Colorado is reflected in our lowest-in-the-nation premiums for errors and omissions insurance. In Colorado the cost of such insurance is $200-400 per year, depending on the coverage limits.

In some states, like California, I’ve heard that brokers can pay that much per month for E&O coverage.

Celebrating MLK Jr With His Words We’re all familiar with Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, but this Monday, CBS This Morning (my favorite morning TV habit) featured the audio of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “American Dream” speech given on Feb. 5, 1964, at Drew University, interleaving the recording of his words with two of his children and one grandchild reading his words. First, Rita and I tried the “Impossible Whopper” at Burger King, and we liked it — can’t tell it from the regular Whopper. Then Rita found the package at right at Costco — eight 1/4-lb. patties for $14.99. She cooked them in a pan and seasoned them as she would regular burgers, topped with pepperjack cheese and sautéed mushrooms, and served the patties on a bed of romaine lettuce and sliced tomatoes with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Great Depression-era safe now on display in treasurer’s office Lack of bank access led county to purchase the safe in 1933

At the height of the Great Depression, the Jefferson County Commissioners authorized the county’s treasurer to purchase a 4,000-pound safe.

“They bought it because of the stock market crash,” said current Jefferson County Commissioner Jerry DiTullio.

“They weren’t putting money in banks anymore, so they actually bought the safe so they could put gold and silver in it.”

That safe, which was made up of extra thin magnesium steel walls that were harder to blow up with dynamite, remained in the Treasurer’s office for decades before eventually being moved into a storage facility.

And that’s where it would remain until last year, when DiTullio took office and learned about the existence of the safe from Mark Hubbard, a Treasurer’s office employee who remembered the safe being in the Treasurer’s office when he started his career there around 30 years ago.

That story piqued DiTullio’s interest, so the two made a trip to the county facility where the safe was

isn’t anything about the Treasurer’s office at all, even though we are an integral part of the county operation, because we are the county banker and we collect and disperse almost a billion dollars a year in taxes.”

Since the relocation of the safe to the office, DiTullio has kept it stocked with gold chocolate coins that are free for visitors to take (he notes that he pays for the chocolate himself rather than using taxpayer funds). He hopes

making the coins available for withdrawal makes for a more pleasant visitor experience.

“When people come into the office they are usually paying their taxes or having to deal with something else like that and so we are trying to make the office as friendly and compassionate as possible,” he said.

Denver Water ‘evaluating options’ after Gross project ruling Reservoir expansion is necessary for future Arvada developments

A court ruling from the end of 2019 determined Denver Water officials must obtain an additional permit for the Gross Reservoir Expansion Project — a project that Arvada is depending on so it can continue developing land.

Located in Boulder County and owned by Denver Water, Gross Reservoir provides water to customers within Denver Water’s service area which, in addition to Denver, generally encompasses an area that stretches west through Lakewood and Wheat Ridge and south through Ken Caryl, Centennial and Lone Tree. All customers in these areas will contribute to the project through their water rates, said Denver Water spokesman Todd Hartman.

Arvada has a contract to purchase raw water from the reservoir and, in return, is sharing the cost of the project with Denver Water.

The reservoir was completed in 1954 and can store roughly 42,000 acre-feet of water, but after expansion, could store about 77,000 acrefeet.

“This is an extremely important project for Denver Water and more importantly, for our customers,” said Jeff Martin, the project’s program manager. “This project will provide a secure reliable water future for our customers” in situations like droughts, he said.

Denver Water is one of two sources through which Arvada obtains its wa-

ter, with the other being Clear Creek, said Jim Sullivan, the city’s former director of utilities.

In total, the city has the rights to roughly 25,000 acre-feet of water, with about 19,000 of that provided through its existing contract with Denver Water, he said.

“We have a comprehensive plan that shows what the city limits will

eventually grow to” by 2065, when an estimated 155,000 people will live in Arvada, Sullivan said. This plan would require approximately 3,000 additional acre-feet of water, which will be provided by the expansion project.

If the project was canceled, the city would need to halt development until it could secure alternate resources, Sullivan said.

Those other resources “have been harder and harder to come by,” said Arvada water treatment manager Brad Wyant. Other entities have already laid claim to the other major water supplies in the area, he and Sullivan said.

“The next big water project will be some kind of diversion of water from the Western Slope to the Denver area,” Sullivan said. This would be a major endeavor and “there’s nothing even on the horizon at this point,” he said, making the success of the Gross project a necessity for Arvada development.

So far, the city has contributed about $3 million to the project, with plans to contribute about $100 million by 2030.

The contributions are funded through Arvada Water’s capital improvement budget, which consists of one-time tap fees that customers pay when they first connect to the Arvada Water system. Resident’s bimonthly SEE GROSS, P23

That was how Doherty’s first co-ed softball team was formed, playing years ago through a community sports league offered by the Apex Park and Recreation District. For more than a decade, Doherty has been involved in both softball and basketball leagues through the district, with no plans to leave the

Kickball Arvada residents can join the coed league for Apex’s next kickball season, which will begin in March at the Harold D. Lutz Sports Complex. The season includes seven regular games, and four teams will advance to the play-offs.

Former Everitt student says she was groped dozens of times Jeffco school principal accused of ignoring evidence

A parent of a former Everitt Middle School student has filed a complaint against Jeffco Public Schools, alleging the district ignored evidence that the student had been sexually assaulted by her classmates on school grounds.

The school responded last week with a letter to Everitt parents, saying that “most of the allegations, if not all of them, have no merit.”

According to the complaint filed in Nov. 2019, the student informed administrators in May of 2017 that she had been groped by two male classmates multiple times that year.

The complaint says the school administration then interviewed the two accused students and obtained “confessions by each,” with one student stating his actions were nonconsensual. The complaint accuses administrators of failing to act on the information.

The student’s mother, on behalf of the student — both anonymous in the complaint — has requested damages from the district, Superintendent

Jason Glass, former principal Jeff Gomez and William “Tim” Carlin, the school’s former assistant principal. The complaint alleges that the student, now 16 years old, was regularly harassed by multiple male classmates as a seventh-grader at Everitt in 2016 and 2017.

According to the complaint, when the female student first enrolled, older students told her and her classmates that every week “on Tuesdays, boys would touch girls’ breasts in the hallways…(and) on Fridays, boys would touch girls’ buttocks in the hallways.” The complaint goes on to allege that students viewed the occurrences as tradition and commonly referred to them using profane nicknames.

The “culture of sexual harassment and assault dates back to at least 2010,” the complaint claims.

The allegation is that during the 2016-2017 academic year, the female student was harassed and assaulted by two particular male students more than 60 times. On multiple occasions, the male students are accused of having held her against a wall or locker, slipped their hands underneath her

clothing and groped her, “laughing and continuing when she said no and cried.”

The female student’s mother says she learned about the incidents in May 2017. The complaint states that the student had not mentioned the incidents before then because she “believed that this was normal or that another complaint would do no more good than past complaints.”

According to the complaint, the student’s mother contacted the Wheat Ridge Police Department (WRPD) and met with the assistant principal, Carlin, the next day. During the meeting, Carlin asked the student to fill out an incident report.

The mother’s complaint states that Carlin put together an investigative report, later given to the WRPD, showed that he had taken statements from both male students “with confessions by each, including one confession stating that their conduct was nonconsensual.” It accuses Carlin of failing to inform the police at the time he collected the statements in May 2017, and instead only providing his report to officers in the fall of 2017 after the department requested

it.

The female student was taken out of classes in May 2017 to avoid conflict with the two boys, who were in the classes with her. But at the start of the 2017-2018 school year, Everitt administrators allegedly placed the girl in classes with the same male students, according to the complaint, which goes on to say that administrators chose to not transfer the boys out of the classes, but had the female student transferred to “lower performing classes” instead.

The two male students were removed from the school when a restraining order was issued against them at the female student and her mother’s request, according to the mother’s complaint.

The male students “subsequently (pleaded) guilty to crimes for their sexual assaults,” following the eventual filing of charges by the Wheat Ridge police.

Thornton bones have a lot to teach Researchers learn much about Dinosaur species from 2017 fossil find

The dinosaur bones dug up by a bulldozer in Thornton in August 2017 could change how science views late Cretaceous dinosaurs.

Paleontologist Joe Sertich, curator of dinosaurs for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, said he and his staff first thought the bones belonged to an adolescent Triceratops because of the fossil’s thinner leg bones.

A month of work with the fossil determined the bones belonged to a much rarer Torosaurus — an animal similar to Triceratops but with a smaller nose horn and a more delicate frill shield on the back of its head.

“There is an active hypothesis among certain paleontologists that a Torosaurus is a fully grown adult Triceratops,” Sertich said.

The working theory has been that Torosaurus like the Thornton fossil were elderly Triceratops, as evidenced by the more delicate frill shields. While the frill on a Triceratops is thicker and sturdy, the theory said it grew weaker and thinner as the animal got older, eventually developing holes.

men is that there are differences that show that they are distinct, the Torosaurus was it’s own specific species and is actually quite different,” he said.

He compared the two to elk and a

deer, co-existing in the same environment.

“That’s what’s really cool,” he said.

“Now that we can see these differences, it might show us that they ate different

things or that their ecology was different.”

cleaning the fossil — dubbed “Tiny” by students at Thornton’s Brantner Elementary which is near the site where the bones were found — and have sent it off to an expert to have casts made.

When they come back, they ‘ll be available for public display — at the museum or elsewhere.

“Hopefully we can get copies out in the community,” Sertich said. They haven’t decided where yet.

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out,” he said. “We can loan them, or we’d love to get one into the hands of Thornton’s school district if we could.”

Bulldozer’s find A bull dozer driver preparing the site at 132nd and Quebec for new public safety substation hit the first bone Aug. 25, 2017 and immediately stopped work, contacting his supervisors and then the museum.

Museum staff arrived at the site Aug. 28 and began digging, uncovering hundreds of bones and bone fragment and happily showing them off to local and national media.

Cleaning efforts also revealed several more skull bones and a complete tibia.

An estimated 98 percent of the skull and at least 20 percent of the skeleton have now been identified.

Sertich said it’s likely the animal died and was set upon by scavengers, including tyrannosaurs and smaller dinosaurs. That theory was bolstered by the find Sept. 7 of a banana-sized

“What’s really unique about this find is just how well preserved it is,” he said. “It’s the most complete Torosaurus, about 98 percent of the skull is complete. We are only missing two small skull bones and the preservation has left it un-distorted. It’s exactly like it would have been in life.”

Triceratops are most common dinosaur fossils around, and Sertich said they were common in the Midwestern plains, especially in northern U.S. states like Montana and North Dakota.

The museum’s collection includes a 2003 Triceratops fossil from Brighton as well as the Highlands Ranch specimen uncovered last year. That one is following the same process as the Thornton Torosoros, just few months behind.

“It’s still being cleaned up in our lab, so there’s not much to look at there,” he said.

Cleaning involves delicately picking the bone apart from the stone and soil, using smalls dental tools, water, tooth-

brushes and pneumatic tools.

“We have to consult constantly among our team to make sure we are doing it right,” he said. “This one (the Thornton fossil) took about 16 months to get fully cleaned, and then another ten months for molding and casting.

And now we’re in the research phase.”

Research on the fossil could continue for years.

“This one of about 12 Torosaurus specimens in the world,” he said.

“Most are about 50 percent complete, and there have been reconstructed Torosaurus skulls that drew upon Triceratops. Those look a lot like a Triceratops.

“But what we are learning is that they are really quite different. The face has different proportions, so it’s not just the frill that is different.”

The frill itself is too thin to be useful for defense.

“It would have been reinforced with sub-tissue, so there would have been membranes and cartilage and likely a keratin, like a fingernail, coating on top,” Sertich said. “But still it was huge

and thin.”

There’s no way of determining the sex of the animal, he said.

“Unless it has eggs inside, you can’t tell if it’s a male or female, and we didn’t find any eggs,” he said. “So Tiny’s sex is undetermined.”

Both species of animals lived at the same time, roughly 66 million years ago just before the Late Cretaceous “extinction event” and were likely distant cousins.

“It was at the end of the Cretaceous, so these were the last dinosaurs that lived here in the Rocky Mountain West,” he said. “Within a few 1,000 to 100,000 years of these guys, dinosaurs go extinct.”

His team is also working on a series of fossils found in Colorado Springs from October. Those fossils come just after the dinosaurs and include early mammals.

“These are on the dinosaur side, and the ones in Colorado Springs are the ones that thrived right after Tiny and the Tyrannosaurs, right on the other side of the extinction event,” he said.

nglish jurist John Selden (15841654) said, “Syllables govern the world.”

Maybe syllables governed the world in the 17th cenQUIET tury, but lately they have been treated DESPERATION with impudence and disrespect in the name of convenience.

There are those who think as Selden did and quite a few of them are within the sound of my voice: namely the “Quiet Desperation” readers Craig Marshall who entered my annual haiku contest.

Smith This column highlights some of the best entries.

While I encouraged a wide range of themes, the majority of the haiku I

received focused on the new year, and it was understandable. Last year was not Miss America, particularly in the final weeks during the impeachment hearings.

Then, guess what? The new year starts off with a bang, as it were, in Iran and international tension is on high alert.

Seventeen-syllable poems might seem like butterflies in a tornado right now, but I think they are reminders of the sustenance in human creativity.

She wrote: “Des Moines, Iowa / Castle Rock, Colorado / We found a new home.”

Look at little “Iowa.” It uses up three syllables all by itself.

What are the longest one-syllable words? “Stretched,” “scrounged,” and “scratched.”

While it is true that he may indeed be a narcissist, this should in no way impair his spelling of the word. well as various groups become more knowledgeable about each other by working together. The financial figures in the Wall Street Journal the other day showed improving employment figures for all age groups, except for those over 65 yrs. The stock market is at all time highs. Trade agreements are being reconfigured (sometimes painfully) to be more equitable for the United States. We are more respected as a country looking after its own people than ever before, though not necessarily better liked.

Pastor Tom was born and raised in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. He joined the Navy near the end of WWII before going to Thiel College where he met the love of his life, Marianne Gerberding. They married while he was in seminary in Minnesota, and together served Lutheran congregations in Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Colorado. Being a pastor was truly a calling for Tom. He served at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Arvada for 17 years, LCA Assistant to the Bishop for 7 years and finished his career at Holy Cross Lutheran in Wheat Ridge. After retirement he did several short term interims

in the metro area. Together they raised 4 children who all graduated from Arvada West High School. Tom loved the Rockies, Broncos, gardening, watercolor painting and traveling, but most of all spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marianne, children Andrea (Bob) Mooney, Rick (Angie) Guinn, Dave (Kim) Guinn, and Beth (Steve) Knutson-Gustafson, 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Welcome the Year of the Rat in the metro area

“When people say libraries are obsolete, we say, ‘Are they? Let’s find out,’ ” said Anthony White, the manager of web systems for Arapahoe Libraries, which operates eight branches in Arapahoe County.

The district now features three recording studios outfitted with green screen walls and video and audio editing software. The Koelbel branch has a 39-seat theater available for plays, films and performances. The Castlewood branch will reopen in April with a purpose-built makerspace, featuring 3D printers, laser cutters, a ceramic kiln and more — double the size of the old makerspace, housed in a repurposed conference room.

“We really want to explore all the roles a library can play in a community,” White said. “The sky’s the limit.”

For some, that can mean learning skills that are otherwise out of reach.

Emily Roberts, a university librarian herself, wanted to try working with wool. She bought $15 worth of raw wool online, then headed to Castlewood Library to process it on a drum carding machine.

“I could invest $15 to learn something new,” Roberts said. “What I couldn’t do was invest $300 in classes and studio time. The library staff walked me through it — there’s only so much you can learn from a book.”

For others, it can mean a welcome reprieve when life throws them a curveball.

Anthony Montoya, a tax attorney in Castle Rock, found himself jobless when his law firm laid off his division.

The event is from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, and includes several free options, like a cultural fair, taste of China and marketplace.

2020 Chinese New Year Cultural Fair at the Southridge Recreation Center, 4800 McArthur Ranch Road in Highlands Ranch. The free fair is from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, and there’s also a special paid performance by the Great Wall Chinese Academy from 2 to 3 p.m., with dragon and lion dances, martial arts and music.

t all started with a state parks pass.

Areli Alcazar, a teacher at Kenton Elementary School in Aurora, stopped by the Schlessman branch of Denver Public Library a couple years ago, where a librarian told her DPL checks out passes to Colorado State Parks.

Before long, Alcazar and her family were hitting the trails in Roxborough and Chatfield state parks for the first time, toting a library-provided knapsack filled with binoculars, field guides and other gear.

“The pass gave us an incentive to be adventurous,” Alcazar said.

When she dropped off the pass at the library, she asked what else the library had to offer. The answers are still unfolding, and Alcazar is hooked.

An avid biker, Alcazar uses the library’s bike repair kits. Her desk is scattered with keepsakes and doohickeys she’s 3D-printed at Denver library makerspaces. She learned to sew LED lights into clothing. She helped her mom test the efficiency of her home appliances with a power check meter. She and her friends check out passes to local museums.

Now, when she’s bored, Alcazar said she drops into a library and asks what they can teach her today.

“If it’s all at our disposal,” Alcazar said, “why not try it out?”

CHECKING OUT Colorado residents can get library cards for most of the state’s library districts for free. Most require a photo ID and proof of address.

The vast majority of library services, including state parks passes, museum passes, access to makerspaces and nontraditional items, are available for no charge. Some libraries may impose time or quantity limits on items like 3D printers that use consumable materials.

Numerous local library districts offer a wide array of services, including personalized book and movie recommendations, access to research databases, streaming movies and documentaries, classes, clubs and connections to other community services.

“I was on my own all of a sudden, and everybody said I needed a commercial,” Montoya said. “Studios wanted to charge a lot of money, but the library in Parker had a green room, cameras and editing software.”

A Douglas County librarian gave Montoya and his wife a crash course in the equipment, and over a couple visits, he produced his own commercial.

“Another attorney told me recently they really liked my commercial, and asked who I hired to make it,” Montoya said. “I was pretty tickled by that.”

‘A beautiful thing’ New library offerings can be a powerful force for self-sufficiency, said Ashley Kazyaka, the program coordinator for Denver Public Library’s IdeaLAB, a group of makerspaces spread throughout the DPL system.

“I think there’s a beautiful thing that happens when you learn to do something yourself,” said Kazyaka, amid a hum of activity in the Central Branch’s IdeaLAB. “People can come in here and learn to sew on buttons or fix their cell phones. We’ve even had people experiencing homelessness who come in and 3D-print replace-

Supported projects include a project in the San Luis Valley that allows teachers to go to family homes for parent teacher conferences, which builds a stronger communication system and makes it easier for parents.

“This place is empowering,” said Arendelle, a singer and DJ. “I’m selfemployed, and here I can print my stickers and iron-on patches — it saves me so much money.”

Libraries can also give people a chance to try out tech and toys they might not otherwise have access to, said Andrea Wyant, a collection development librarian for Douglas County Libraries.

“We can give people access to things they can use and return without cluttering up their houses or unnecessarily duplicating things,” Wyant said.

“We want to stay a step ahead of the community,” Walker said. “A decade ago, people said: ‘Who goes to the library anymore?’ Now, we’re hearing from people who have cards to five different local library systems.”

Walker said in a time of expansion, it’s important that libraries endear themselves to the community. While the economy is hot now, they’ve got to prepare in case things get tight.

“During the recession, libraries faced a lot of hardships,” Walker said.

“Hours were cut. Positions were cut.

Our job is to manage our growth and our finances, and build relationships.

Libraries are an essential service.

They’re part of the bedrock of democracy.”

The big picture, Walker said, is that libraries are expanding beyond the buildings they’re housed in.

“We talk about the library being everywhere,” Walker said. “Libraries can be in your pocket. We can come to you.”

While libraries don’t charge users for services, Walker said, everyone chips in.

“People are paying for this through their taxes,” Walker said. “You might as well use what you’re paying for.”

“I grew up playing sports, and you kind of lose some of that competitive nature when you get out of school,” he said. But the opportunity for competition has once again presented itself, he said, as “Apex is right in our backyard. It’s hugely valuable to have that resource there.”

Throughout the year, Apex offers a number of athletic opportunities for those of all ages, including classes, tournaments and leagues through which adult residents can form teams and face off.

As spring approaches, registration is open for multiple sports leagues that run through Apex.

“Our adult sports leagues and programs are a great way for you to meet new people and be part of your community,” said Apex communications director Katie Groke. “It’s an easy way to meet your health and fitness goals and have fun, all at the same time.”

As for what those health and fitness goals might be, adults of any age should make an effort to schedule multiple workouts every week, said Brian Gearity, director of the sport coaching MA program at the University of Denver.

Doherty agreed.

“It’s a good opportunity to get out and spend some time with your friends,” he said. “You start playing the same teams season after season and you’ve got your rivals. I really enjoy the camaraderie.”

He added that over the years, he has seen the leagues develop more divisions, which divide teams based on skillsets. Many of the leagues offer multiple divisions, allowing both beginners and experts to get involved.

“They’re really driving improvement by having those classifications,” he said.

SPORTS ‘Seeing who we’re playing for’

Dakota Ridge, Columbine students visit patients before Think Pink game

For patients visiting the infusion center at Wheat Ridge’s Lutheran Medical Center, an appointment can mean sitting in the same room for four hours, six hours or even all day, said Janette O’Brien with the cancer services department. The center administers treatment to patients with a range of diagnoses, including cancer, osteoporosis and autoimmune diseases.

To help make the hours go by more quickly, student basketball players from Dakota Ridge and Columbine high schools stopped by the center Jan. 15, with so many in attendance they entered the center in shifts so as not to overcrowd the room.

The visit served as a lead-up to the Think Pink game between the two schools, which took place at the end of the week. Every year, the game raises money for the Lutheran Medical Center Foundation to serve patients, including those visited on the 15th.

With the game on the horizon, the rival high school students joined forces to brighten patients’ days with gifts, snacks and conversation.

The Jan. 15 trip was just one of many Dakota Ridge and Columbine students have made over the years —

Arvada resident Jeannene Fullen, who was at the center for testing, told the students stories from the time she worked as a substitute teacher at nearby elementary and middle schools.

The students’ visit was a benefit to everyone involved, she said, not only because it taught the students

interpersonal skills but also because “it’s wonderful” for patients to have visitors.

Marie Kidd, another Arvada resident, agreed. She thanked the students and basketball coaches for the snacks they brought — inside a bag decorated with the words “DONUT Give Up” — and spent the visit asking questions of the visitors.

“It’s so kind of them to visit, and it’s very needed,” she said.

For Dakota Ridge basketball players Taylor Legault, Michaela Mossbrucker, Alexis Thornton and Emily Doolittle, the visit allowed them “to see another side of the community and be a part of something bigger,” Legault said.

“It gives the game more meaning,” Mossbrucker agreed. “We’re seeing who we’re playing for.”

D’Evelyn boys hoops upsets Green Mountain in OT

DENVER — D’Evelyn’s boys basketball team might have had the win Jan. 15 to jumpstart its season.

The Jaguars (6-8, 2-1 in Class 4A Jeffco League) upset then No. 10 ranked Green Mountain in an overtime thriller at D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School. D’Evelyn was able to pull away in overtime to grab a 68-62 victory.

“I’ve been waiting for this team to show up and put it all together,” D’Evelyn coach Dan Zinn said. “It wasn’t all together today, but we were a heck of a lot closer than we’ve been.

On both ends of the court we were getting done what we wanted to get accomplished.”

Senior Sandy Dinegar (23 points) and junior Luke Kjellsen (22 points) carried the offensive load for the Jaguars. D’Evelyn held a double-digit lead midway through the second quarter thanks to Dinegar’s 14 points before halftime.

“They both are playing well,” Zinn said of Dinegar and Kjellsen. “Both have multiple facets to their game

that makes it hard for them to be stopped.”

Kjellsen did most of his damage in the second half. The junior’s 3-pointer early in the third quarter gave the Jaguars the lead back after Green Mountain (9-4, 2-2) went on a 12-0 run.

“Green Mountain is a really good team,” Zinn said. “We had the firstquarter run, but basketball is a game of runs. We were able to withstand their run.”

The Rams had the ball in the final seconds of the fourth quarter with a chance to win it in regulation. However, an acrobatic driving shot by freshman Jaylin Hardwrict (16 points) didn’t fall and the put-back attempt by senior Matt Schlieper didn’t drop in.

“We have to finish,” Green Mountain coach Mike Puccio said. “There was a lot missed at the rim tonight.”

It was all Jaguars in the overtime period. D’Evelyn made just one field goal, but was 9-for-10 from the free-throw line to close out the win.

Kjellsen finished 13-of-16 from the freethrow line, all in the second half.

“I had a rough beginning the season with free throws. I was shooting something like 40 percent,” Kjellsen said.

“I knew if we were going to win big games we had to make free throws.”

D’Evelyn students there were in attendance rushed the court to celebrate with its players after the big conference win.

“We’ve had a rough go of it. I think our effort was kind of lacking,” Kjellsen said of the 4-8 record coming into Wednesday’s game. “Tonight I think we showed as a team that we can play four quarters of basketball hard and we can beat anybody.”

Green Mountain has dropped 3-of-4 games since Winter Break. Junior guard Darius Padilla has been out with a health issue for all three of the Rams’ losses since the start of the new year, which has contributed to the Rams’ turnover problems.

According to the complaint, the female student later left the district because of bullying from students who had heard about the incident.

Carlin was hired as principal at another district school, Wheat Ridge’s Peak Expeditionary School, in 2018. Gomez retired from his position in 2019.

Gomez could not be reached for comment.

Carlin and the current principal at Everitt Middle School, JoAnn Euler, could not comment because they are not authorized to speak on the district’s behalf in legal matters, said media relations director Cameron Bell.

Euler sent a letter to Everitt families on Jan. 13 to address the media attention the case has received.

“The (district) team reviewed the factual allegations with the individuals closest to the matter and have determined most of the allegations, if not all of them, have no merit,” the letter said in part. “Outside counsel will be formally responding to the complaint with Jeffco School District’s denials.

providing a safe learning environment where all students are treated with dignity and respect.”

Jeffco Public Schools chief legal counsel Craig Hess was not available for comment before Colorado Community Media’s deadline.

Section JBB of district policy requires district employees to report to the principal if they “witness or believe that a student has been subjected to sexual harassment.” The principal or a designee must then conduct an investigation and resolve the matter.

One option is an informal resolution, which in this case, would have been a meeting between administration, the female student and the two male students.

The lawsuit complaint did not indicate whether such a meeting ever took place.

If a student does not agree to an informal resolution, the principal must encourage the student to fill out a formal complaint. The principal must then complete an investigation within 20 school days, the policy states.

The policy requires that the principal or designee ensures harassment does not continue and the student who filled out the complaint is safe.

“Jeffco Public Schools is committed to providing a working and learning environment that is free from sexual harassment,” reads the district’s sexual harassment reporting notice. “Sexual harassment will not be tolerated.”

water billing funds ongoing operations and will not be used for the Gross project, Sullivan said.

Denver Water has estimated the project will cost a total of $464 million.

The timeline The organization has aimed to finish construction of the Gross project by the end of 2025, a timeline associated with the project’s 404 permit, Martin said. The permit is issued when planners demonstrate they have taken necessary steps to avoid potential impacts to nearby water resources.

Today, Denver Water feels the project is still on track to meet the time constraints of its 404 permit, Martin said. However, it is difficult to predict when construction can begin because of several ongoing things, he said.

There are a few essential next steps before more planning and construction can go forward. One is that the project needs approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission prior to entering the design phase.

Another is the 1041 permitting process.

The process requires those constructing a water project to show specific future impacts, particularily environmental, of the project.

In March, Boulder County commissioners determined that the project would need to go through the 1041 process. Denver Water petitioned to the state court because the project had already undergone multiple environmental reviews at the federal level and prepared an environmental impact statement, Martin said.

In December, the court ruled that Denver Water would need to go forward with the 1041 process.

Martin said that Denver Water executives are “still evaluating their options on the 1041” and are currently unsure if an alternative solution might be reached.

Earlier in 2019, Denver Water attempted to submit a 1041 application to the county, but the county did not accept the application because litigation was pending, Martin said.

Should the 1041 process move forward, Denver Water believes the process would take less than a year, he said.

A second court case However, environmental group Save the Colorado seeks to call the future of the project into question with another legal case.

Together with five other local, regional and national environmental groups, Save the Colorado filed a lawsuit against the Corps of Engineers for issuing the 404 permit.

Save the Colorado tracks proposed dams and diversions, intervening when it feels projects will negatively impact the environment, said Gary Wockner, director of Save the Colorado. The groups are against the expansion project because it will take additional water from the Colorado River, he said.

“With this project, the ecology becomes worse for the fish, for recreation, for everyone,” he said. “We’re trying to stop it.”

The groups expect a ruling by the end of 2020 or beginning of 2021. Should the court rule in Wockner and his allies’ favor, that ruling could come in several different forms, Wockner said.

The ruling may require the project to reobtain the 404 permit or it could put an end to the project altogether, he said.

The environmental organizations feel that “Denver Water needs to focus on water conservation” in its existing projects, as opposed to creating new projects, Wockner said. “If that isn’t enough, they need to focus on other sources than the Colorado River.”

However, Denver Water holds that it is constantly evaluating its practices to promote conservation and environmental protection.

The Gross project “is not just about building a dam; it’s about how we’re going to change how we operate,” Martin said. “We’re making sure we’re really being environmental stewards.”
