Community respond to tragedy In wake of deadly crash, Brighton baseball community rallies around victim’s team

The Brighton youth baseball community, including the high-school baseball team, turned out to honor a 10-year-old boy who died in a rollover crash Memorial Day weekend.

Local media identified the youngster as Gavin Cecil. His mother, Karena Cecil, 27, of Brighton, faces a vehicular homicide charge, according to the Adams County District Attorney’s Office. Her bond hearing is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, and her preliminary hear-

ing was set for 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 25. Both are in Adams County Court.

The youngster played on a 10U rec baseball team. It met on June 1, for the first time since the crash.

“When they arrived at the field, there were players and coaches from some of our other teams there to give every player on the team a rose and let them know that the entire BYBSA (Brighton Youth Baseball and Softball Association) community is there to support them,” according to a Facebook post from BYBSA. “Then after the BHS Bulldogs Baseball varsity team finished their game, the entire team came to their practice to talk to the boys and take pictures.”

Brighton OKs body cameras for police Deal is worth $2.7 million over 10 years

Brighton City Council voted unanimously to approve a 10-year, $2.7 million contract to secure body cameras for the Brighton Police Department.

Seven of the nine council members approved the contract with Axon Enterprises. A city statement said the council asked the police department to start a body camera program. The Legislature also passed a law requiring body cameras of all municipal police departments by 2023.

Sgt. Monce Portillo said body cameras have been a priority for Brighton police for several years, not just since last summer’s nationwide demands for police reforms.

“As Cmdr. Domenico mentioned last night during the city council’s presentation, the city council tasked the police department in 2020 with implementing a comprehensive cloud-based body-worn camera program. At about the same time, the state issued legislation requiring all Colorado Law Enforcement agencies to implement body-worn cameras,” Portillo said. So, I would say no, not for us. Body-worn cameras were and continue to be a priority for the

Recommendations came from a task force that included all police department divisions, the city’s information technology department, municipal courts and victims’ services programs. The body-worn cameras and cloud-based storage will provide the district attorney’s office with access to digital media that will become part of almost every case moving forward. the statement read.

“We look forward to the use of body-worn cameras,” Portillo said.

“We believe the cameras will be a great tool to help continue building trust and transparency.

The cameras will also help capture evidence and highlight the good work our officers do daily.”

Ernie was born in Ellis, Kansas on June 9, 1927, the third child of Fred and Anna Boos Younger. In 1936 his family moved to Colorado, and by 1942, had started a dairy farm in the Brighton area. After eighth grade, he quit school to help out on the farm, and in 1945, at age 18, enlisted in the Navy to fight in WWII. His military time was cut short with the end of the war, and by 1946 he was back in Colorado where he worked for CF&I in Pueblo, Colorado.

On May 9, 1949, he married his one and only love, Laverna “Vernie” Brown. They started their life together in Pueblo, and in 1952, moved to Commerce City, Colorado where he began his career as a diesel mechanic. They resided in that area for the next 26 years.

In 1978, they decided to move back to the Brighton area and he opened his own business repairing motors.

For the next 11 years, he worked in the business, and in 1989, retired to have more time to do all of the things he really enjoyed.

Throughout his whole adult life, there was never a time Ernie didn’t have a project going. He was constantly making or building something. He loved gardening, and every year, had a huge garden. He built a green house, and through winter, they had fresh vegetables. Fruit trees were everywhere on the property and he tried his hand at grafting to see what he could get. Grape vines gave him the opportunity to make

wine. He raised beef, and pigs, so always had freezers full of meat. He had to try his hand at everything…he loved projects.

But his real passion was fishing. If fishing was mentioned, he was ready to go no matter where….all of Colorado, any US state, Canada & Mexico. Any trip that was made had to include fishing.

His last wish before his death was to fish a particularly interesting pool on the Platte River across the street from his home.

Ernie, loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 26, 2021. His engaging grin and ready laugh will be sorely missed. He is survived by his daughter, Pat (Wayne) Medlin; son, Jim (Linda) Younger; four grandchildren, Tim, Nikki, Jennifer, and Joe; and six great grandchildren, Taylor, Ciara, Brian, Emma, Riley and Peyton. His is preceded in death by both of his parents, nine siblings, and loving wife.

Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial were held on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, in Brighton, CO. Interment followed at Elmwood Cemetery, in Brighton, CO. Helen Louise Hill passed away on May 29, 2021 at her home in Thornton, Colorado after a lengthy illness. Helen was born to Gordon and Kathleen Courtney on May 22, 1938 in Marceline, Missouri.

Helen married Jacob Hill and together they had six children, Jacob Jr., Jeffery, John, Jesse, Joseph, and Jennifer. They were later divorced.

Helen served as Adams County Treasurer for 24 years, managing the county’s tax revenue and investments. She was responsible for tax collections exceeding $170 million dollars— funding which supported Adams County’s significant growth and development. Helen was the first female elected official in Adams County and previously served as Adams County Public Trustee. She was recognized for her ongoing service and contributions to numerous professional, political, and civic organizations. Helen is a graduate of Parks Business College in Denver.

Known for her quick wit, passion for writing and crossword mastery, Helen loved politics, foreign policy,

and was always prepared for a debate. She loved to cook and was known for her delicious pies.

When she retired from public service, Helen started Hill’s Harvest, a farmer’s market, where she sold produce, her special preserves, and pickled beets. Helen touched so many lives and was loved by all. Heaven has a new angel.

Helen is survived by her six children, Jacob Jr., Jeffrey, John, Joseph, Jesse, and Jennifer, 15 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two siblings and in-laws including Ralph Courtney, brother, Geri Courtney, sister-in-law, Sue DeBenedictis, sister, Francis (Benny) DeBenedictis, brother-in-law, David McCammon, brother-in-law, Peggy Romero, sister-inlaw, as well as her long-time friend Judith Kahle and son Christopher. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Delores Kroll, sister, Gordon Courtney Jr., brother, Norma Walmsley, sister, and Patricia McCammon, sister.

A memorial service for Helen will be held at Summit of Peace Lutheran Church in Thornton on June 29, 2021 at 11am.

A new coroners office opens in Weld County Autopsies will be processed in-house more quickly

For more than 40 years, the Weld County Coroner’s Office has had to take the decedents to the McKee autopsy unit in Loveland to investigate the causes of death, a process that took weeks.

Weld County now has its own in-house fully functional coroner’s office.

“It a much better way to provide good quality care for the community and provides a safer working environment for the employees. It’s a great addition for the county and community,” said Dr. Michael Burson, Weld County coroner.

Burson studied forensic pathology, fell in love with the specialty and has been performing autopsies for Weld County for more than 10 years as the principal forensic pathologist. He also provides services for Larimer County and some of the surrounding counties for Colorado and Wyoming.

The Weld County Coroner’s office was in the Centennial Center in downtown Greeley and never had a facility. So, in September, officials rennovated the existing old ambulance building that was built in 1992 south of the Weld County Administration Building. It amounted to an overhaul of 12,621 square feet and an addition of 6,597 square feet of clinical space with a drive-thru garage. The new facility totals 19.218 square feet.

The new facility is equipped with labs, forensics, and an evidence room so the investigators can produce quicker results. The facility includes a secure room for highprofile cases or a case that involves containment, such as a contagious disease. Also, there is a room for

“I’m just so ecstatic. I’m a forensic radiological technician by trade as well, so I helped start up the radiology department coming this week.

It will be all contained right here. It will also be efficient for families, for everybody, and law enforcement. It will be nice to have everything done so quickly,” said Jazowski.

It will save the county money to no longer pay to use the McKee Medical facility. Also, for a fee, neighboring counties that do not have facilities can use Weld County’s.

The new office is at 1121 M St., Greeley.

In addition, the 10U team joined the Bulldogs when they took the field for a home game against Chaparral High School on June 4.

“With the bond our team has built, we used it as a way to show those boys that we are always there for them.”

“Cory (Cory Moul, BYBSA executive director) is a friend of mine and has helped us with logistics many times in my short career at BHS,” said Bulldogs’ baseball coach Justin Stringer. “The player who died was his son’s best friend. When he reached out to let me know they would be practicing on the girls’ softball field after our game was over, I decided we would visit his team with our guys to show them we support them and are behind them in their time of need.”

The crash happened on I-76 near Bromley Lane shortly before 7:30 p.m. May 30. Brighton police said the car was heading eastbound when Cecil lost control. That caused her car to go onto the shoulder of the interstate before it rolled. The vehicle landed in the westbound lanes.

Three other people were in the car.

All are expected to be OK. The crash and the investigation closed both lanes of I-76.

“As a kid, I remember I always really looked up to the high-school players,” Bowman said. “So, we wanted to remind them that even when times are tough, Brighton Bulldogs always stay together.”

Most of the Bulldogs’ squad started in the Brighton youth baseball program.

“Our varsity guys want to be the leaders in the baseball community in Brighton, so they jumped at the chance to show their support,” Stringer said. “I allowed the kids to be organic with the experience, and they stepped up to the plate, like they always do, giving the kids high-fives, encouraging them, etc. One of my players then asked if the younger team could run out to their starting positions with them when we played Chaparral.”

“It was awesome to see the team have some smiles on their faces when we were talking to them despite the circumstances,” Peterson said. “Our team was happy to be able to remind those boys that there is always someone looking out for them.”

It’s designed to help local artists who occupy physical space in the downtown urban renewal area with rent costs.

Moonlight bike rides The city of Brighton announced the return of its full moon bike rides.

The next rides are Thursday, June 24, Friday, July 23, Saturday, Aug. 22, and Monday, Sept. 20.

All rides are free. They start and end at Emi Chikuma Splash Pad and Plaza, 1750 Skeel St. Ride sign-ups begin at 6:15 p.m. (participants will have to sign a waiver the first time they attend and check-in each ride thereafter). A free giveaway drawing and serving of treats will occur after each ride; to enter the drawing, you must check-in.

The free monthly community event is for bicyclists of all levels to enjoy a leisurely five- to 10-mile ride through Brighton as the sunsets. A map of the rides will be posted to the Bike Brighton page of the City’s website.

Face coverings will be required while waiting for rides (but are not mandatory while riding) and any other COVID-19 health and safety guidelines at the time of each ride will apply. Helmets and bike lights are recommended. Also, please remember to bring a water bottle for the ride during the hot months.

‘In Memory’ display for Wall That Heals event extended The city of Brighton said the deadline to submit names for the “In Memory” display (part of “The Wall That Heals” program coming to Brighton over Labor day weekend) is July 31.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s In Memory program honors those who returned from the war and later died. The wall will be in Carmichael Park, 650 E. Southern St. The city also needs between 150 and 200 volunteers to help with setting up the wall when it arrives

Gummball rally The fourth annual Gummball Rally is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at Riverdale Regional Park, East 124th Avenue and Brighton Road.

The 5K run is in memory of Adams County sheriff’s deputy Heath Gumm, who died in the line of duty in January 2018.

The fee is $30 for racers 13 years of age and older.

BHS Class of ‘81 reunion Brighton High School’s class of 1981 is planning its 40th reunion for the weekend of Aug. 27 and 28.

The first day’s agenda includes a 6 p.m. social hour at the Copper Rail, 174 S. Main St. Attendees are responsible for their own food.

A golf tournament is scheduled to start the day Aug. 28, followed by a wrap-up event at Todd Creek Golf Course starting at 5 p.m. The cost for this is $50 per person and $75 per couple. Reservations are due July 1.

Trash Bash The city of Brighton’s annual Trash Bash is set for two weekends.

The second is the weekend of Friday, Sept. 24. In both instances, the dropoff point will be at the wastewater treatment plant, 325 N. Kuner Road.

Acceptable items for trash bash include furniture, cabinets, appliances (not freezers or refrigerators), bicycles, cut-up carpet and doors.

Small items have to be in containers.

Total weight has to be relative to the type of container.

Present a city of Brighton water bill or something that indicates your place of residence. A suggested donation of $10 will be accepted to help defray the cost. Car and light pick-up

tires will be accepted for $7 each.

Oversized tires are $10 each, and semi-tractor trailer tires cost $20.

ECO event Brighton’s electronic disposal and shredding event is set for 9 a.m.

Saturday, Sept. 25, at City Hall, 500 S. Fourth Ave. Acceptable items include game consoles, electrical equipment and cords, keyboards, computer towers, laptops and cell phones.

50/50 sidewalk, curb, gutter program The city of Brighton offered a new online form for its 50/50 Sidewalk, Curb and Gutter program. It helps reduce the financial cost of replacement and maintenance.

The website is brightonco. gov/5050. Residents can apply for the program, including what’s needed for the repairs and photo uploads.

The program began in 2004. To date, the city said it’s spent almost $50,000 to help out homeowners.

Denver ends capacity limits on large outdoor events Colorado Rockies plan for June 28 as ‘Opening Day 2.0’

Denver public health officials on June 1 retired capacity limits for large outdoor events, including for two of the city’s most popular venues: Coors Field and Red Rocks.

“These venues now have no capacity limits, distancing requirements or other restrictions,” the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment said.

The Colorado Rockies said on June 2 that they will allow full-

capacity crowds of 50,000 beginning on June 28. They’re calling that date “Opening Day 2.0.”

A new public health order that takes effect runs through July 1 also removes regulations for indoor events up to 1,999 people. Indoor events of 2,000 or more still require approval from DDPHE. The changes in Denver come after the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment on Monday dropped restrictions for large indoor gatherings. The Denver regulations, however, still trump any changes to the state’s COVID-19 rules.

This summer’s revival of The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway — previously feared lost in the face of a major overhaul — represents the gritty persistence of Colorado’s scenic trains.

They refuse to fade since their frontier births. Where many once

connected commerce in the West, now they stir nostalgic imaginations.

Here’s a look at some options:

The train takes off from Colorado’s famous gold epicenter and rises 1,000 feet to more colorful realms of wildflower meadows and aspen groves. While zigzagging toward the Continental Divide, you’ll hear tales of Leadville’s heyday.

But the natural spoils are there; Amtrak knows the stretch between downtown Denver and Glenwood Springs as one of the most scenic across its national network, featuring the vertical wonderland of Glenwood Canyon. Spend a night in Glenwood, enjoy the hot springs and catch the train back to Union Station.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (Adult fares $99, durangotrain. com) A stunning journey through the heart of the San Juans, arguably Colorado’s most spectacular countryside. Ambitious backpackers know the lift as necessary to reach treasured trailheads while sightseers are plenty satisfied staying on board all the way to Silverton, a charming town that appears frozen in time.
