After a year’s break, Brighton City Council once again debated city staff’s jurisdiction over water issues when Mayor Pro Tem Matt Johnston led a charge to limit the city manager’s authority over city utilities.

After Brighton City Manager Jane Bais DiSessa informed council members last week that she was considering issuing mandatory water restrictions, Johnston called for a special June 18 meeting to temporarily block Bais DiSessa’s ability to do that. Then, on June 22, council held another special meeting in which they reversed that resolution and returned power back to the city manager.

Last week, the city’s water treatment plant demand exceeded previous years’ peaks and this year’s projected peak, when it had to deliver 12.75 million gallons of water in a day. Due to the treatment plant’s age and condition, its difficult to meet that demand or higher, staff said.

The plant can only operate so many treatment “trains” at a single point, explained city utilities staff at the June 22 council meeting.

“My biggest concerns are that if we are reaching about 12 million a day, we could be in extreme danger in a 12-to-16-hour period in a shutdown,” said Sam Mingo, Brighton’s water treatment plant supervisor.

single filter. If I break any piece of equipment, we lose production.”

Mingo and Utilities Director Brett Sherman explained that the city’s total water supply or the region’s current drought conditions aren’t causing the current crisis; the treatment plant is. When the city exceeded its daily peak demand last week, it did so a month ahead of schedule, Mingo said.

When demand surpassed the projected peak last week, the city immediately reduced its water use and purchased more treated water from Thornton than it usually does.

Jackie McGannon 1945 - 2021

Jackalin Irine (Hunter) McGannon, known as Jackie, age 76 of Sterling, Colorado peacefully entered Heaven on June 20, 2021.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2021 at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church, 130 South 4th Street, Sterling, CO. A luncheon will immediately follow the service.

Jackie was born on June 9, 1945 in Maryville, TN to George and Evelyn (Dickerson) Hunter, while her Dad worked in Oak Ridge, Tennessee helping to build the plant for the Manhattan Project. In 1946, after the war ended the family moved back to their hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. The lure of a better paying job called her family to Colorado in 1957. This is where she would attend jr. high and Adams City High School.

While attending her brother’s wedding Jackie met the love of her life, the bride’s brother, Patrick. Pat fell hard for Jackie and eventually moved from Chadron, Nebraska to Denver, Colorado to be close to her. It wasn’t long after their meeting and falling in love that they married on February 23, 1962.

In 1966, Pat was drafted and relocated to Tacoma, Washington and was deployed to Vietnam in 1967. A highlight of their marriage was the fall of 1967, where the two were reunited, in Hawaii. Together, they would fondly remember this time and the many happy miles they drove exploring the island.

After Pat was discharged in 1968, they made their home in Westminster, Colorado where they started their family with their daughter Tricia in 1971 and son Travis in 1975. They later moved to Brighton, Colorado in 1980 where they raised their family. The yearning for wide open spaces, called them to Sterling,

Colorado in 1992 where Jackie lived her remaining years.

Jackie spent the kids growing-up years reading stories, taking them on adventures, and was always the first to volunteer for any school activity or extracurricular events. She loved cooking for her family and having them gather.

When the children were grown, she returned to work at Northeastern Jr. College, where she was a baker and Grandma to the students. She was a woman of deep faith, a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sterling, Colorado where she played in the handbell choir and was a Deacon. Jackie loved and was there for everyone she ever met, she will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. She will always be remembered for her loving heart and beautiful smile.

Jackie is survived by her husband of 59 years, Pat McGannon, her daughter Tricia (Jay) Jimenez of Grant, Nebraska, son Travis (Jalayne) McGannon of Brighton, Colorado, sister Anna Faye Black of Aurora, Colorado, sisters in law Joyce Bernard, Beverly McGannon of Chadron, Nebraska, and Donna Hunter of Benton, Kentucky. She is also survived by her five Grandsons Trenton (Hannah), Hunter, Garrett, Cutter and Tanner McGannon, and Great Granddaughter Leika McGannon.

She was preceded in death by her parents George and Evelyn Hunter, sister Mamie Hunter, brothers George “Billy” Hunter and Tom “Bud” Hunter, and brothers in law Gene McGannon and Boots Bernard.

Josephine R. (Jodi) Trujillo

December 25, 1934 - June 3, 2021 Born on Christmas Day at the family home at Barr Lake, Colorado to Charles Casey Chavez and Cora Walker Chavez. Jodi, also known as “Dolly” to her friends and family, was one of twelve children.

She was a Brighton High School graduate in 1952 and retired from Samsonite Luggage in the 70’s. She was also a seamstress for Blinky of Blinky’s Clubhouse. Jodi bowled in several women’s bowling leagues for many years. She was the original Mrs. Clause in Brighton for over ten years.

She went on to become a restaurant /bar owner at the Brothers II Lounge for over forty years; famously known for her lunch specials and Sunday morning breakfasts and menudo.

After high school Jodi married her first husband John Trujillo, Jr. and together they had six children. After his passing, she met the love of her life Ernest (Bob) Rojo. They were together for over fifty years. They enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling and taking road trips in their motorhome. When they traveled they would always go with their close friends and family.

She was involved in her community by catering the Brighton DECA functions and making sure to take some extra chili with her. She was an avid Broncos fan and season ticket holder. The family would get together at her house for the super bowls and holiday dinners where she would always burn the buns.

Survived by her children, Bill Trujillo, Cheryl (Rudy) Montano, Dana Waymire and Robin (Wayne) Lamb;

grandchildren, Ryan Trujillo, Janna (Jeff) Peterson, Jacob (Rachel) Trujillo, Amada Trujillo, Bill Trujillo, Brandon (Joyce) Montano, Tracee (Dan) Suppes, Amanda (Cisco) Garcia, Angela Waymire, Troy Waymire, Jamie (Jacque) Lamb, Ethan Lamb; and great-grandchildren, Kaden Viet, Jude Trujillo, Jimmy Beaulieu, Lennon Suppes, Dominic Suppes, Tanner Jaramillo and Xavier Wilson. Surviving siblings include Irene Gallagher, John Chavez, Robert Chavez, Frank Chavez, Stanley Chavez, Joette Galindo and Lyn Chavez Gibson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Bob Rojo; two oldest sons, Kerry Trujillo and Danny Trujillo; and siblings, Louis Chavez, Leroy Chavez, Casey Chavez and George Chavez.

A special thank you to Jodi’s caregivers in the last months of her life; Sara Martinez, a longtime friend of Jodi’s and Jean McConaghy; along with Cathy, her nurse through Hospice.

Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 a.m., both at St. Augustine Catholic Church, in Brighton, Colorado. There will be no reception following the services.

Molly M. Sack

December 23, 1924 - May 24, 2021 Molly M. Sack was born on December 23, 1924, in Ft. Lupton, Colorado. Her parents were Kathrine (Bathauer) and Adam Bellender. She was the third of ten siblings.

Molly married the love of her life Casper Sack, on January 9, 1945, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Brighton, Colorado.

They lived on a farm near Brighton, where they raised four daughters, Carolyn, Linda, Beverly and Janette. Casper and Molly were married nearly 60 years before Casper’s passing in 2004. Molly moved to Brighton after the sale of the farm.

Molly’s love of her family and her home kept her very busy. Her family was her joy. She took pride in raising her girls, working alongside Casper on the farm, keeping a spotless home, and growing a colorful flower garden. Her worn down garden hoe was a testament to the hours she spent weeding her garden. Molly had many friends and family sit around her kitchen table through the years, enjoying the rewards of the tantalizing smells coming from her kitchen. Her delicious pies, cakes and German foods were always requested favorites.

Anyone who knew Molly, knew she had a beautiful singing voice. Her daughters often woke to their mother’s singing. If she wasn’t singing she was humming and yodeling. Whether in the house or outside, her voice filled the air sharing her beautiful gift with all who were near. She was still singing her favorite songs up until the last weeks of her life. One song that always drew others to sing along was God Bless America.

Molly was creative, artistic and displayed many talents. She painted milk cans in beautiful colors and gave them to many family members and friends. Molly embroidered and cross stitched many pictures hung in her home. She crocheted several delicate doilies.

Her passion for sewing continued from childhood through recent months. Molly’s sewing talents created costumes, doll clothes and projects for her girls and

grandchildren. She made many clothes for her daughters and herself. The last several years, she sewed beautiful blouses that she proudly wore with earrings to match each one. She was complimented often on how beautiful she was.

Molly’s love of Casper and her family was an inspired example to all who knew her. She was a strong presence in her family and always had a giving heart, lending a generous hand to many. There was a fun, spirited side of Molly that shined through her bright blue eyes. Her cheerfulness and laughter were heartwarming, revealing her sense of humor which was quite entertaining. Molly’s Catholic faith, praying the rosary, and honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary were an important part of her life.

Molly is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Ron Wollum, Beverly and Vince Sauter, Janette and Mike Stremel; grandchildren, Brian and Rhonda Lambrecht, Bruce and Pam Lambrecht, Brent and Lynnette Lambrecht, Jason and Susan Wollum, Amy and Mike Hofer, Mathew Sauter, Michael Sauter and Kevin Margoluis; and great-grandchildren, Brenna, Rianne, Brayden, Kendyl, Kate, Dillon and wife Taylor and Emma Lambrecht, Tyler and wife Brianna, Ryan and Lily Wollum, Alex, Molly and Madelyn Hofer and Levi Margoluis; brother, Pete Bellender; and sisters, Helen Schott, Rosie Price and Virginia Teopfer. Molly is preceded in death by her husband, Casper; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Ron Lambrecht; parents; four sisters, Mary Bauer, Katie Schwindt, Annie Slater and Gertie Stratton; and one brother, Adam Bellender.

we have to be. We have to make sure that the residents have power in this community. They have not had enough power for too long, and here’s where we sit with a new council and we’re not going to allow that.”

Three members of the council, including Mayor Greg Mills, were not able attend the Friday evening meeting, resulting in Johnston’s overseeing it. The mayor pro tem allowed other councilors and public commenters to speak but limited Bais DiSessa’s comments. On several occasions, the city manager raised her hand to try and explain the situation, but Johnston didn’t allow it.

Bais DiSessa had one chance to talk at length, saying that she wasn’t skirting the council’s authority.

In an emergency, she has the authority to move the city to a higher drought stage in the city’s drought management plan, she said. She also refuted a claim Johnston made that the city was imposing additional costs on customers by issuing mandatory water restrictions because of financial penalties assessed to people who violate the restrictions.

Voting on the block At the June 18 meeting, council voted 4-2 to temporarily block Bais DiSessa’s ability to issue mandatory water restrictions. Johnston and Councilors Tim Watts, Mary Ellen Pollack and Adam Cushing approved the resolution, Councilors Mark Humbert and Ann Taddeo voted against it.

The June 22 meeting -- with all nine council members were in attendance -- picked up where the council left off.

This time, the resolution under consideration would permanently give city council the sole authority over declaring drought stages and water restriction issuances.

Meanwhile, Councilman Clint Blackhurst, who served as the city’s utilities director at one point, said he doesn’t think the city should issue mandatory water restrictions and that the city should consider other alternatives first.

New office helps veterans find benefits, assistance

Adams, Arapahoe counties collaborate to open facility in north Aurora

A new veterans’ services office in Aurora opened this year to help connect the area’s large population of veterans to benefits, with the goal of meeting their needs closer to home, according to an Arapahoe County news release.

Before the new office’s opening, Arapahoe County veterans had to visit the office in Littleton, far from residents of the east Denver metro area.

The new office sits at Arapahoe County’s Altura Plaza facility at 15400 E. 14th Place, on Chambers Road just south of Colfax Avenue. It’s a short drive east of Interstate 225.

Adams and Arapahoe counties partnered on the necessary funding.

Nearly 80,000 veterans live in the two counties, according to the news release.

Veterans Service Offices are countylevel departments in each state that assist veterans and their families by answering questions and educating about the benefits for veterans that are available from federal, state, county and local resources, according

to the news release.

The offices also help eligible persons with filing claims for benefits. The VSO’s accredited officers — who typically are veterans themselves — help determine eligibility and prepare claims and applications that go to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Whenever veterans need assistance that may be outside the office’s scope, the VSO team connects them with resources from local agencies and community partners.

“This new office adds an additional staff member to manage a growing caseload, but most importantly, it is a new opportunity to serve our veterans by meeting them where they are,” Arapahoe County Commissioner Bill Holen, a disabled U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam, said in the news release. He continued: “This office reduces barriers such as means of transportation and time constraints by offering a convenient second location.”

The City of Aurora is also helping fund the new office, which opened in early 2021.

No decision was reached on the water restrictions, but Bais DiSessa said she would consult with her staff about some of the alternatives that Blackhurst suggested.

New principal at Second Creek 27J Schools announced the hiring of Ana Marlatt as the new principal for Second Creek Elementary School.

She had been an assistant principal at the school for the past two years. She’s been in the district since 2005 as a teacher and an instructional coach.

“This school is an incredible pace filled with amazing students, staff and so many supportive families standing with us,” she said in a statement. “The Second Creek community is truly amazing. I’m honored to be the next leader of Second Creek and am excited about what can accomplish together.”

Marlatt earned her bachelor’s degree at Regis University. She earned a master’s in curriculum and instruction at the University of Colorado. Her second master’s -with an endorsement in educational leadership -- came from Regis University in 2015.
