about hate crimes that the city of Northglenn and the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s office hosted June 10. “This guy has been harassing myself and the Muslim community for over seven years. And you’re telling me there is nothing we can do about it,” said Ihsan Riahi, a panelist at the forum Masjid Ikhlas in Northglenn. Riahi and his fellow panelist Gerald Montour, founding assistant principal of the American Indian Academy of Denver, talked about their experiences with other audience members.

Both sides were cordial, though there were differences between what one side wanted and what the other side felt like it’s able to provide. In one instance, Riahi said he wants to see law enforcement officials intervene more to stop a man who has protested Masjid Ikhlas, sent a letter to the mosque asking for money and is now suing Riahi. Meanwhile, Montour said there have been instances in which some-
one harassed him, and he feels that law enforcement didn’t properly follow up. “Today’s white privilege is evident. It’s evident in our school systems, it’s evident in our judicial systems, it’s evident in our city government and it’s evident in our neighborhoods,” Montour said. Dana Paul Crocker, also known to many as “Daytona Dana”, age 58, of Littleton, CO passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, on May 29, 2021. Born October 4, 1962 and a native to Colorado where he lived in Aurora, CO until age 23 then moved to Thousand Oaks, CA until 1999, before returning to the mile-high state.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 26th at 1:00 P.M. at the Greenville Free Methodist Church located at 1367 Illinois Route 140, Greenville, IL with burial in the Greenville Montrose Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Newton is survived by his wife, Suzanne. They were Greenville College sweethearts and married in 1960. Surviving are three children, Bryan of Stuttgart, Arkansas and wife Lucretia; Jeffrey Fink of Boerne, Texas and wife Jeanette; and Michelle Wright of San Luis Obispo, CA and husband, Eric, and 10 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Bryan Jr., Lauren, Theodore, Evan, Alex, Landon, Quinn, Jenson, and Jocelyn, and 3 great-grandchildren, Elowyn, Sage and Finley. Surviving siblings include brothers, Dennis, of Murfreesboro, TN, George, of Grand Junction, CO and Tim of Denver, CO. He is preceded in death by his parents Walker and Alice Fink, his twin sister Nancy Lower, and sister Mary Alice.

He received several awards, published articles, and as an adjunct professor taught in the education departments of 4 different institutions of higher learning in Colorado, Illinois, and Florida. He grew up in the Free Methodist Church, joining the United Methodist Church following graduation from Greenville College. Newton was active in choirs, quartets, teaching in the church school programs and serving on various church committees and boards. He also served on the Board of Directors of American Education Corporation, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, a developer of educational software. Polis signs air quality, tutoring bills at Adams City High School BY STAFF REPORTS
Gov. Jared Polis stopped by Adams City High School June 16 to sign a pair of bills into law. One directs $10 million from the state’s general fund for grants for public school air quality improvement projects. The other created a highimpact tutoring program to address student learning loss and unfinished learning because of the pandemic. According to a Facebook post, Adams 14 Board of Education President Ramona Lewis said it was exciting to have the governor sign these important bills at one of the district’s own schools. “It’s great to have the governor here to come sign these bills because they will not only benefit district [Adams] 14, but all the districts in the state of Colorado,” Lewis said. “The air quality for a lot of districts is an important thing because our buildings are getting older and older. We are very proud the governor chose Adams 14 and Commerce City.” State Sen. Dominick Moreno, an Adams City High School graduate, said he was proud to have worked on these bills with his home district in mind. “For me, it was really important to have the bill signings here in Adams 14 because this is the school district that I went to, and particularly, to bring that opportunity to young people,” he said. “Not many young people have the opportunity to see a bill signed into law by the governor of the state of Colorado.”

City barbecue returns Brighton City Council hosts its annual city barbecue from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at Carmichael park, 650 E. Acceptable items for trash bash include furniture, cabinets, appliances (not freezers or refrigerators), bicycles, cut-up carpet and doors. Small items have to be in containers. Total weight has to be relative to the type of container. Present a city of Brighton water bill or something that indicates your place of residence. A suggested donation of $10 will be accepted to help defray the cost. Car and light pick-up tires will be accepted for $7 each. Oversized tires are $10 each, and semi-tractor trailer tires cost $20.

occur. Mason outlined the statutes he can use to prosecute a biasmotivated crime but said it’s not easy to win those cases. State law requires prosecutors, like Mason, to convince the jury that someone committing a hate crime did so with hateful intent. Though that’s always been a high bar to meet, a new law the Colorado Legislature passed this session changed that. Colorado Senate Bill 280 altered the language of the state law to say that someone is guilty of a hate crime if that person “intended to harass or threaten in whole or in part,” Mason explained. “Before, we could lose a biasmotivated case because a jury didn’t believe that throughout the commission of the crime, a person was doing with it with intent or a bias-motivated mindset,” Mason said. “This law candidly makes it easier for me to charge and prove hate crimes.” Still, Mason said it’s hard to secure guilty verdicts for hate crimes and “law enforcement and laws can’t fix everything in society,” he said. The forum didn’t finish with everyone agreeing on everything, besides the belief that hate crimes are addressed when the entire community steps up to address the issue. Montour asked the audience, “How do we as community members change this? How do you become a change agent?”
At a June 10 forum in Northglenn, community members talked about their experiences with hate crimes and law enforcement officials discussed laws about hate crimes. The law enforcement professionals encouraged residents to report hate crimes to the police.
