Tornado wipes out two homes, causes $500,000 in damage

Weld County officials said the June 7 tornado that started in Firestone caused about $500,000 to businesses and property during its trek through parts of southwest Weld County.

Two homes were destroyed, amounting to $429,000 in damage. Three other homes sustained damage to at least 50 percent of the structure, according to county officials. The cost of the damage to those homes is a bit more than $100,000.

The tornado also hit two businesses, a feedlot and a dairy. Weld County officials said a fire sparked from a downed power line destroyed one building at the feedlot while another building loss was the direct result of the tornado.

Damage to the dairy was limited to the roof, outbuildings and livestock.

County officials said the tornado traveled about six miles and was on the ground for about a half-hour.

The tornado also blew over some power lines and dislodged at least one piece of plywood that sailed into a tree. No people were injured, but two cattle at the local dairy farm died.

The large tornado dropped down near Weld County roads 19 and 28 shortly after 5 p.m. A family driving home from the class 4A regional golf tournament in Greeley had to turn around on U.S. Highway 85 and wait out the storm in a place of safety.

“I was in the house,” said resident Mark McKinney. “A buddy I work with lives up the road. He called me and said there was a tornado over the top of the house. It just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger.”

The storm continued northeast, damaging the Cottonwood Dairy on WCR 26 and continuing toward Platteville. A storm chaser said two cows died.

“Once it left here, it stayed on the ground for probably 20 minutes,”

There was no damage to McKinney’s home. Down the street, the tornado impaled a large piece of plywood into a tree.

“We were just sitting in the living room. We came out, and it was literally right here,” McKinney said from in front of his property on WCR 28. “We watched it come through. It didn’t sound like a tornado. It looked more like a dirt devil. But then it intensified, and then there was thunder lightning. it must have lasted 25 minutes.”

“It was terrifying,” said Karyn Weiner, whose home was in the path of the tornado when it started. “I was at my kids’ school over in Frederick, picking them up and bringing them home. I was backing out, saw the tornado out my back window.

July 15, 1939 ~ June 6, 2021 Armando John Romero age 81, passed away on June 6, 2021 at his home in Brighton, Colorado. He was born July 15, 1939 in Fort Garland, Colorado to Reverend Manuel and Dorothy Romero, who preceded him in death along with his brother Donald and his sister Linda.

He spent his early childhood growing up in Fort Garlard. He told us tales of sheriffs riding white horses, riding horse drawn wagons with his grandmother, and going to the well with his sister Emma. He became the Domingo-kid one day when his mother gave him some coins and sent him with his sister to the local drug store. He knew what he wanted but did not know exactly how to say it in English.

So, he told the shop keeper he wanted two ice cream domingos. From that day on the shop keeper called him the domingo kid.

Armando moved to Pueblo, Colorado with his parents where he finished growing up. He had his first business shining shoes at the D&M Cigar Store. He met the love of his life Beatrice in junior high school.

In 1956, Armando and Beatrice got married. At the age of sixteen, Armando joined the Army. His Army career did not last long as they figured out his age and he was discharged. Upon returning home, Armando and Beatrice had two children, John and Carol.

Armando was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia on the USS Forrestal. Armando was deployed several times to the Mediterranean. Armando and Beatrice had their third child Dorothy. In 1961, Armando served on the USS Forrestal during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

After the Navy, Armando settled in Cheyenne, Wyoming with his wife and their children. This is where he started a career in the auto industry.

Armando was the Service Manager for Klipstien Automotive. He owned a brand-new Plymouth Fury and would drive it back and forth from Cheyenne to Pueblo. He said it would take him about two and half hours back then. In 1965, Armando took his family on vacation to San Francisco. While driving around Haight Ashbury they saw many hippies everywhere.

Armando would spend the rest of the 1960’s in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Armando moved back to Pueblo in the 1970’s where he would finish raising his family. He continued his career in the auto industry as a Service Manager. Every month he would get to drive around a new dealer demo vehicle. Armando loved to socialize and was a member of the G.I. Forum and the Moose Lodge where he was a bartender in his spare time. In the late 1970’s, Armando decided to start his own auto repair business.

Armand’s Auto Service was successful and lasted into the early 1980’s.

With economic times of the 1980’s and his daughters moving to Denver. Armando decided to move to Brighton, Colorado to be close to his new grandsons.

Armando got back into the automotive industry and worked for Al Smith Chevrolet. Armando would go on to become the Service Manager for Town and Country Auto Dealership.

In 1990, Armando went to work for Hyland Hills where he held many different job titles. He was an event bus driver and got to experience all of what Colorado had to offer.

He took people to sporting events, concerts, plays, and all kinds of different Colorado experiences. He would get tickets to Water World and Adventure Golf and would take his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews every summer. He was able to build his house in Brighton right down the street from his three grandsons. His proudest moment was when his grandson, Andre got his first job working with him at Hyland Hills Water World.

In the 2000’s, Armando helped each of his grandsons start a lawn mowing business during their teen years.

Then, he saw his life’s hard work pay dividends in the form of his grandchildren graduating from college.

Armando decided to retire from Hyland Hills and went to work at the Brighton Recreation Center for fun. While working at the recreation center he met and made friends with all kinds of people. Each and every one of them looked up to him as a mentor. In 2008, Armando and his wife, after working hard on his campaign, got to meet President Barack Obama when he came through Brighton. Armando was so happy and excited.

During the 2010’s, Armando and his grandson, Tommy turned his shed into a barbershop. When he retired from the recreation center, he started giving free haircuts. He enjoyed spending his days cutting hair for people around the neighborhood. Armando would continue to give car advise to his grandchildren. He taught his grandchildren how to work on their cars.

Armando would become a great-great grandfather getting to experience seven generations in his life time.

Armando is survived by his wife of 65 years Beatrice Romero. His son John (Mary Lou) Romero, and his daughters Carol (Tom) Lucero and Dorothy (Moses) Hermosillo. Seven grandchildren, Ninka Romero, Lisa (Estevan) Medina, Andre, Joseph and Thomas Lucero, Stephanie and Katie Hermosillo. Also, seven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, plus another great-great grand baby expected any day now. He leaves behind two brothers Manuel (Nancy) and Pete (Joanie) and four sisters Emma, Patsy, Elenor and Martha. His sisters and brother in-laws Helen (Lawrence)Trujillo, Linda (Jerry) Garcia and Jean Gonzales. He also has numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to cherish his memory.

Visitation was Monday, June 14, 2021 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.; Funeral Services honoring Armando were Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 11:00 a.m., all at Tabor Funeral Home, 75 S. 13th Ave., in Brighton, Colorado.

Interment with Military Honors will be Monday, June 28, 2021 at 11:30 a.m., at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Area “B”, 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd., Denver, CO 80235. Those planning to attend should arrive at Staging Area “B” by 11:15 a.m.

Lee lived a long, healthful, prolific and vibrant life until his passing on May 22, 2021 at age 96. Born of Italian immigrants Emilio Fiorino and Ernestina Tessitore Fiorino in Little Italy, New York City on January 18, 1925, he served with the 204th Combat Engineers in Europe during WWII. After the war, he met the Love of his life, M. Madeleine Turgeon, and married her on September 24, 1949. As a young draftsman, he was selected to draw up safety upgrades for the Empire State Building’s observation deck. Recruited by renowned Denver architect Temple Buell, he moved in 1955 from NYC to Colorado to realize his ambition of becoming a prominent architect himself, and to raise a family in the wide open spaces of the West. In 1965 he designed and built a custom home for his fast growing family near Parker, CO. His several architectural design creations include Denver’s Tiffany Plaza. He retired to Tucson AZ, fulfilling a lifelong dream of living in the desert. There he continued his passion for photography and watercolor painting,

receiving several local and national awards for his work. His deep, abiding love and appreciation of music was a hallmark of his life and inspired the same within each of his children. A man of impeccable integrity, he was dearly loved by many and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Madeleine, their 5 children, Robert, Paul, Michelle, John, and Ted, 11 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

July 1, 1947 ~ May 10, 2021 Born July 1, 1947 and raised in Palisade, Colorado, by her parents, Lena Ruth (Carnahan) Hampton and Harry Lee Hampton. Mary passed away May 10, 2021.

continued to teach third grade at Malley Dr. Elementary in Northglenn, CO for four years.

Mary was very active in High School, serving in student counsel, a member of the speech and drama club, Sophomore class president and Sophomore Homecoming attendant.

In 1973 Mary and her husband built their home east of Brighton in Van-Aire Airpark, where her family still resides. They just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 1, 2020.

She graduated from Palisade High School in 1965, attended Mesa Jr. College 1965, graduated in 1967.

While attending Mesa College 1967, Mary was Phi Theta Kappa and had the honor to be in an elite group of 12 outstanding students, selected by faculty and administration of Mesa College, known as the Mavericks. She attended the University Of Northern Colorado, graduated 1969 with a B/A, in education.

She always was proud of the fact that she paid her way through college with a 4.0 grade point average by packing peaches, and working at one of the Palisade landmarks, the Union 76 station for Cora and Bennett Young. Her dad was a hard working coal miner that worked at the Cameo mine before it closed down and then at the Bear mine in Paonia, Colorado. Her mom was a hard working house wife beside being the local Avon lady. In the small town of Palisade, the three sisters, nor their boyfriends, could get away with much without her knowing. She started a family, before going back to teaching, serving as a Paraprofessional at Northeast Elementary, Brighton, CO, in Title One, then teaching third grade for five years at Northeast and retiring in 2010.

Mary taught third grade for one year at Clifton Elementary School, before marriage to Carl E. Goeritz, Broomfield, CO. Her husband brought her kicking and screaming over to the eastern slope, where she

Mary is survived by her husband Carl (Buddy) Goeritz; two sons, Carl Brandon Goeritz and Brian Richmond Goeritz; and two sisters, Barbra Hampton of Grand Junction, CO and Carolyn Granat of Albuquerque, NM. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lena Ruth and Harry L (Dutch) Hampton.

How to celebrate the Fourth in north metro Denver

There weren’t many Fourth of July events last year and for the ones that did happen, people likely watched fireworks from their car or backyard. This year, all the events have returned.

Adams County, Westminster and Northglenn, Thornton, Brighton and Fort Lupton are having an Independence Day celebration. Here are the necessary details about them: Adams County’s Stars and Stripes returns from its pandemic hiatus for Saturday, July 3 at Riverdale Regional Park, 9755 Henderson Road, Brighton. There will be a 5K race, a cornhole tournament, live entertainment and musical fireworks. See more at http://adamscountyfair.com/starsandstripes Brighton’s Fourth festival will start at 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 4 at Carmichael Park, 650 E. Southern Street. Bands will perform for a few hours and food trucks will be parked nearby. There will be fireworks sometime after 7 p.m. the city encourages attendees to bring blankets, lawn chairs, sunscreen, bug repellent and drinking water.

Northglenn and Westminster teamed up for a day full of fun events on Sunday, July 4. Throughout the day of July 4, Northglenn will host a car show, family fun lunch and community dinners at different parks. The last Northglenn event is set to end at 7 p.m. At 9:15

“We lost a lot of trees,” she said.

“There’s a job site just south of us. Their trailer is up against our house. It’s about 10 feet away from the house. I don’t know how it didn’t get into our house. There’s plywood up in the trees.”

Weiner said the tornado looked like a landspout at first.

“I got a really cool picture of it from far away,” she said. “It looked so tiny. I didn’t think it would do that much damage. It was just a baby. But it sat for four or five minutes.”

McKinney’s wife, Sandy, said they went to the front door once they learned about the tornado.

“Then the alarm went off afterward,” she said. “We never had an alarm until it was to the neighbors, and she said she didn’t get an alarm either. It happened so fast. In the house, you couldn’t hear anything until it was right in front of the house.”

The National Weather Service rated the tornado as an EF-1 on the Fujita scale with winds of 99 mph.

The storm was on the ground for 7 miles and was 50 yards wide in places. It started two miles northeast of Firestone and ended three miles northwest of Platteville.

City’s pay equity in line with state

When it comes to paying city employees, Fort Lupton’s salary scale is in line with state guidelines.

That’s according to city consultant Laurie Graves. She made a presentation to Fort Lupton City Council during a June 8 town hall meeting.

The city’s survey included more than 160 employees, including part-time workers. It excluded the city manager, elected officials and seasonal employees. Seventy-nine of those who participated were male.

Women made 83 percent of a male’s

salary for comparable work, which was in line with the state’s average. Non-white employees made 82 percent of what white workers make.

Several employees who took the survey have been on their jobs for less than three years.

“It doesn’t mean you have an unlawful pay disparity,” Graves told the council. “Now you need to look at the details and make sure there is a valid explanation.”

Some of the valid reasons are merit pay and seniority. Graves said some jobs, such as librarians, are production-based or require travel or specialized education. Graves

encouraged the council to steer clear of what she called “invalid reasons,” such as a previous job’s salary, as a means of a job offer.

“The law doesn’t require you to pay the same as other cities,” said Laura Howe, Fort Lupton’s human resources director. “The law requires you to spend money fairly across your staff.

You need to make sure we are paying employees fairly.”

The city studies and surveys the salaries it pays roughly every two years.

“I want to pay employees fairly,” Howe told the council. “I’m the one doing the recruiting, and I want to

pay as well as anybody. It’s interesting watching what other cities are doing. We’re doing a good job.”

News Briefs New principal at Stuart Middle School Krista Dean is the new principal at Stuart Middle School. She’s been a language arts teacher, a social studies teacher, a reading intervention teacher and an instuctional coach at Stuart, too.

Thornton Fire vaccination effort has far-reaching impact In the past five months, the Thornton Fire Department has administered over 82,000 doses

The Thornton Fire Department is doing more than its fair share in the fight against COVID-19.

As of June 2, the department has administered over 82,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine via clinics it’s been operating for five months. The department knew it would be successful when it started, but it didn’t foresee the level of impact it would have.

“We knew the impact that it would make, but I don’t think we knew we would hit that 82,000 mark,” said Sabrina Iacovetta, community safety and information officer for the department.

The department began in late December, almost immediately after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave the Pfizer vaccine emergency authorization. To Iacovetta’s knowledge, there were no other Denver metro fire departments that had a mass similar vaccination plan. At that point, the department was used to large-scale operations because it

was providing mass COVID-19 testing.

When only essential personnel and frontline medical professionals were initially eligible for the vaccine, the department administered doses at Fire Station 1. All firefighters with the department were able to administer the vaccines because they had a basic EMT certification, though only certain department staff regularly manned the clinics.

Later, the department would hire outside individuals to help administer doses.

When vaccinations opened to the public for people who are 70 and older, the department started to run its mass vaccination site at the Carpenter Recreation Center. Most vaccinations happened there from then on, but the department also operated mobile clinics and hosted Saturday clinics at the Adams 12 Five Star Schools building.

Once the department had vaccinated all Adams 12 staff who signed up, the clinic at the Adams 12 building also opened to the public.

What surprised Iacovetta the most was where people traveled from.

People drove three to four hours to Thornton to receive their vaccine and others flew in from other states.

Several people commented on “how efficient our site was,” Iacovetta said.

safety-related issues in Congress – awarded Thornton Fire its “Fire Service-Based EMS Award” in late April. It was one of four national awards the CFSI gives out annually.

The department received the award for testing and vaccinating community members and implementing

a COVID-symptomatic firefighters program.

The department has shut down the recreation center clinic, due to the demand for vaccinations. Mobile sites are still operating, however.
