Josephine “Josie” Adelina Rael August 31, 1944 - March 28, 2021

Josephine “Josie” Adelina Rael passed away on March 28, 2021 at Hope West Care Center, Grand Junction, Colorado.

She was born on August 31st, 1944 to Agapito Salazar and Amalia (Vigil) Salazar in Clayton, New Mexico.

After graduating from Fort Lupton High School, she married the love of her life Gilbert “Gil” Rael on April 20th, 1963. They began their family with the birth of their daughter Romaine in 1964, closely followed by their son Romauld in 1965 and lastly their daughter Roxanne in 1970.

In addition to raising her family, Josie worked full time climbing the corporate ladder with ambition and hard work. She was most proud of her job as a Premises Coordinator for a major firm, but always said that her most rewarding job was working at a mortuary using her talents as a communicator and artist.

Josie loved doing anything outside. Gardening, woodworking, reading and puzzles were some of her favorite pastimes. Creating and fixing anything came naturally to her, whether it was painting a landscape or repairing the lawnmower.

She was an accomplished seamstress and embroiderer, but truly gifted as a whistler.

She is reunited with her husband of 58 years.

She is survived by her siblings Agapito Salazar,

Epifanio Salazar, Patricia Abeyta, Alfonso Salazar, Diana Sandoval, Isabella Garcia, Victoria Romero, Louis Salazar, Thomas Salazar, Juan Salazar, Jeri Bruner, Darlene Rasmussen and Michael Salazar; children, Romaine (Tod) Woomer of Grand Junction, CO, Romauld Rael of Larned, KS, Roxanne (Lou) Guidichessi of Castle Pines, CO; grandchildren Amanda (Josh) Dunkle of Aurora, CO, Anna (Alex) Weisiger of Denver, CO, Alexander (Hania) Woomer of Morgantown, WV, Aidan Woomer of Denver, CO, Andrew Guidichessi of Castle Pines, Devin Guidichessi of Colorado Springs, CO, Dylan Guidichessi of Omaha, NE and Ryan Rael of Indianapolis, IN. As of March 29, about 70% of all Coloradans 60 and older have been vaccinated, including 79% of all Coloradans 70 and older, 71% of Coloradans 65 to 69, and 53% of Coloradans 60 to 64, according to the release. More than 1.5 million Coloradans have received their first dose of a vaccine, and almost 1 million have been fully immunized, the release said.

Mass vaccination sites underway Colorado recently launched six mass vaccination sites in locations around the state.

Other mass vaccination sites are open, in Pueblo County at the Colorado State Fairgrounds and in Mesa County at the Grand Junction Convention Center. On April 1, the state launched the final of the six mass vaccination site at Ball Arena in Denver.

The state’s Equity Outreach Team is working with community-based organizations, providers, local pub-

lic health agencies and tribes to set up vaccine clinics in “underserved” communities across the state, according to the release. As of today, 111 clinics have been completed, with 10 to 12 clinics completed per week on average. More than 75 clinics scheduled through April 6 are expected to administer 30,400-plus doses, the release said.

Polis also announced that Colorado will be launching mobile vaccine clinics to create more access in coming weeks. These buses will travel to “small communities,” the release said. More information was forthcoming as those clinics become operational.

Not time to let guard down, data shows Polis’ office emphasized that it’s still a time for caution. Colorado’s coronavirus cases and hospitalizations continue on a plateau that shows signs of rising again, according to state data.

“Emerging COVID-19 variants are cause for concern,” the release said.

“For Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, it typically takes two weeks for the body to build immunity after vaccination. That means you can be infected from exposure to COVID-19 just before or just after vaccination.”

News Briefs Daniels Fund winners Two members of the Brighton Youth commission are recipients of Daniels Fund Scholarships.

They are Ashley Settegren, who attends Brighton High School, and Tessa Davis, who attends Prairie View High School.

The scholarships are worth up to $25,000 per year for a four-year college. The goal is to give students a chance to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Nearly 2,000 students applied for the scholarships.

“The 2021 cohort is impressive and filled with outstanding young people who have promising futures ahead,” said Hanna Skandera, president and CEO of the Daniels Fund, in a statement. “We’re delighted to have them join the family of Daniels Scholars and look forward to being a part of their journey through college and beyond.”

Lap swim reservations The Brighton Recreation Center announced a change to its lap-swim reservation program. It started this week.

Lap-swim and therapy lane reservations are available for a half a lap lane. Also, time slots for Saturday swim times change to noon to 1:10 p.m., 1:20 to 2:30 p.m. and 2;40 to 3:50 po.m., effective Saturday, April 10.

Trash Bash The city of Brighton’s annual Trash Bash is set for two weekends.

One is the weekend of Friday, April 30, and the other is the weekend of Friday, Sept. 24. In both instances, the drop-off point will be at the wastewater treatment plant, 325 N. Kuner Road.

Acceptable items for trash bash include furniture, cabinets, appliances (not freezers or refrigerators), bicycles, cut-up carpet and doors.

Small items have to be in containers. Total weight has to be relative to the type of container.

Non-potable pond pump station work continues Crews continue replacing the existing non-potable pump station that irrigates parks along Southern Street.

A city statement said the $2.2 million project will provide “a reliable solution to the non-potable irrigation system along Southern Street,

help reduce the need for potable water to serve irrigation needs and provide capacity for increased flow to reduce the need to upsize the pump station in the future.”

As part of the project, the existing pump will be replaced with a new high-efficiency pump that has a life expectancy of 20 years.

The city anticipates mininmal impacts to traffic, thanks to equipment and material deliveries. Completion is expected by June 1.
