Danish-based manufacturer Vestas-American Wind Technology announced plans to consolidate its footprint in Colorado, combining operations in Windsor, Pueblo and Brighton. The company is one of the leaders in the global wind energy market, selling more than 13,000 turbines in the United States since 1979.

The consolidation means that the company will cease making blades for the company’s towering windmills at the Brighton location, laying off 280 workers. The com-

“The wind energy industry in USA has grown tremendously in recent years, which has increased our factories’ capacity and expanded our service business,” company Chief Operations Officer Tommy Rahbek Nielsen said in a written statement.

“With a larger fleet under service and lower demand in the near-term, we are therefore consolidating our setup in Colorado to ensure we can cater for our service business’ needs and are structured in the right way

to ramp up efficiently once wind turbine demand requires us to.”

The facility is just north of Brighton on East Crown Prince Boulevard.

Patrick Giron, director and chief executive officer of the Brighton Economic Development Corporation, said it’s a business decision by the company.

Myrtle Elaine (Durrant) Fry

April 24, 1934 – February 9, 2021 Myrtle Elaine (Durrant) Fry, age 86, of Eckert, Colorado, formerly of Osawatomie, Kansas died Tuesday, February 09, 2021.

Elaine was born April 24, 1934 in Osawatomie, Kansas. She was the daughter of Auburn B. and Myrtle Irene (Pontious) Durrant.

She grew up in Osawatomie and graduated from Osawatomie High School with the Class of 1952. She then attended Wichita Business College and worked for Cessna as a Keypunch Operator.

She was united in marriage to Charles Randolph Fry, Jr. on April 4, 1953 in Osawatomie, Kansas. They made their home in Pratt, Kansas and became the parents of three children. During the children’s school years, the family lived in Greenburg, KS., Beaver, OK., and Brighton, CO. Elaine was active in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Eastern Star, and the Methodist Church.

In 1977 she re-entered the work force and retired in 1994 from working for

Adams County in Brighton, CO. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren growing up. In 1999 she moved to Missouri to be with Irene and John Dollar.

Those years were such a joy to her.

When they moved to Florida she moved to Eckert, CO to live by her daughter. She was active in the Eckert Presbyterian Church activities and served as a Deacon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother Darrell, her brother Maurice in 2000, her twin sister Irene in 2007, and a grandson James in 2009.

Survivors include two sons, Charles William Fry and wife Sandy of Brighton, CO; Randall Dean Fry and wife Tammie of Dumas, TX; and one daughter Penny Lou Hagel and husband Mike of Eckert, CO; 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be in Osawatomie Kansas Cemetery on April 24, 2021 at 11:00 am with a luncheon after to visit with the family.

Eugene Loran Petersen 12/28/1934 - 2/14/2021

Gene was born on December 28, 1934 to Lawrence and Gladys Petersen in Viborg, SD. On February 14, 2021, Gene joined God in his heavenly kingdom. He passed away with his loving wife (Judy), daughters Kellie and Jodie, sons-in-law, Tim and Doug, grandson, Ian, and granddaughter, Loren by his side.

Gene was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Gene grew up on the family farm outside Viborg, SD with 3 sisters, Glennys, Arlyce and Dianne, and his brother Robert. He went to Viborg High School and graduated in 1952. From there he entered the service with the U.S. Army.

After serving with the Army, Gene apprenticed as a brick mason. Through a good friend, he met and married Judith Klink in 1962. They settled outside of Brighton and raised two girls, Kellie and Jodie, in a home he and Judy designed and built together. Gene worked on many commercial and residential buildings throughout the Denver area.

Gene was an active member of the Brighton community as a lifelong member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Bricklayers Union, Sister Cities and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He also volunteered his time helping to build a house with Habitat for Humanity.

In his free time Gene loved to go boating,

camping and fishing. Together, he and Judy drove to Alaska, camping and fishing along the way. Having an adventurous spirit, Gene always wanted to “get out of Dodge”. Together they traveled to many different countries enjoying the culture, food and people. Gene and Judy were ‘Snowbirds’ and enjoyed spending winter months in Arizona with Judy’s brother Terry and his wife Karen. They also spent time in the South Dakota Black Hills with his sisters: Arlyce (Rich) and Dianne (Ted). While in Arizona, they enjoyed visiting with friends and exploring the beautiful desert. At home Gene was a ‘master fi xer’, there was nothing he couldn’t repair. He always looked forward to visiting with his friends over coffee.

Gene is survived by his loving wife Judy, his daughters Kellie (Tim Courtney) and Jodie (Doug Zink) and grandchildren Ian and Loren Courtney. Gene also is survived by his sisters Glennys, Arlyce, and Dianne, and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at a later date.

With new vaccine schedule, 70 and older still prioritized Eligiblity started Feb. 8 for Coloradans 65 to 69, school workers

More updates to Colorado’s coronavirus vaccine schedule have pushed some groups closer to the front of the line, but public health officials emphasize that Coloradans 70 and older who haven’t yet been vaccinated still have priority.

“With this additional group that’s being added, doesn’t that basically push anyone in the 70-orolder category further down the list by adding to the pool?” asked a caller from Douglas County during a live virtual town hall Feb. 4 that discussed vaccine distribution.

Meredith Brown, a school nurse liaison for Tri-County Health Department, responded that vaccine providers are still prioritizing people 70 and older — and said that’s the directive from the state.

“The state announces eligibility ahead of time to prevent lag time,” said Brown, whose health department serves Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties. She added: “We wouldn’t want to get done with the 70-plus group and have any time” wasted in getting to others.

Colorado’s updated vaccine schedule, as of Feb. 4, notes: “As we move through phases, people in previous phases remain eligible.”

Coloradans ages 65 to 69 reached eligibility for the vaccine on Feb. 8, according to a governor’s office news release.

Colorado’s school workers for grades pre-K through 12 also reached eligibility Feb. 8 and should reach out to their employers to sign up for the vaccine, the news release said.

Seniors won’t get displaced in line by teachers, according to a frequently-asked-questions page from the state public-health department in late January.

“Pre-K-12 teachers and child-care workers are in Phase 1B.2 of the phased distribution plan, and they will get their vaccines through their employer and will not utilize the same vaccine sign up system as people 65 and older,” the page says.

About halfway to goal for 70-plus

Roughly 191,000 Coloradans 70 or older had received a first vaccine dose, according to a frequently asked questions page from the state public-health department in late January.

The state aims to vaccinate 70% of Coloradans ages 70 and older by Feb. 28. That totals about 394,000 people, according to the page.

“We’re about 47% of the way to

our goal,” the page says.

High-risk conditions, frontline workers

Gov. Jared Polis also announced that close to March 5, “frontline” workers and Coloradans ages 16 to 64 with two or more conditions that put them at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19 will also likely be eligible, according to the release.

Frontline workers include those in food and agriculture, manufacturing, the U.S. Postal Service, public transit, grocery, public health, human service workers, faith leaders, direct care providers for Coloradans experiencing homelessness and journalists.

That list includes restaurant workers, according to Denver-area news reports.

A caller in the Tri-County town hall from Adams County asked if she needs documentation from her doctor regarding her multiple high-risk conditions.

“We don’t know exactly what the documentation will look like for folks with those chronic conditions,” Brown said. But it’s a good idea for Coloradans to talk with their doctors and gather any available documents now to be ready when eligibility for the high-risk group comes, Brown added.

Local power co-op has new boss

The new head of United Power is Mark Gabriel, effective Thursday, March 15.

Gabriel has had a 25-year career in the electric utility business, according to a press release. For the last eight years, Gabriel has been the administrator and chief executive officer of the Western Area Poer Administration, part of the Department of Energy.

“Mark Gabriel is the right choice to guide United Power into a more successful future,” said Ursula Morgan, the chair of the

United Power board, in the release. “He will help create a lasting impact on our members.”

“I am extremely honored to have been selected to lead such an amazing organization as we Gabriel approach a transformational time in the electricity business,” Gabriel said in the release. “United Power is uniquely positioned to be engaged in the decarbonization of the grid and to take advantage of the introduc-

tion of new technologies as we move to a cleaner energy future.”

Gabriel also spent more than eight years as a management consultant and acting president at the Electric Power Research Institute.

There, the press release said, he led a nationwide effort, Electricity Sector Framework for the Future.

Gabriel authored a book, “Visions for a Sustainable Energy Future,” which won an award for environmental writing.

“United Power has a rich history of innovation and is serving one of Colorado’s -- and the nation’s -- fastest-growing service territo-

ries,” Gabriel said in the release.

“The power of the cooperative business model to embrace change is unmatched in its ability to engage with its members for the future.”

Gabriel replaces acting CEO Bryant Robbins. Robbins is the chief operating officer and has been filling both roles for the past year.

“The board is appreciative of Robbins’ leadership and guidance this past year, helping us meet the many challenges of our fast-growing cooperative,” added Morgan in the press release.

“The installation of payment kiosks demonstrates our commitment to providing the types of services our members want,” said Francis Ashu, Member Services Director.

“Through our many convenient account management and payment options, we can provide the same

“It’s called a rapid response to make sure that everything is being done to help those impacted by the layoffs to find new employment,” Giron said.

Also, United Power over the past few years experienced a steady increase of customers who preferred using the self-serve as digital account options to pay accounts.

It contributed to the reduction of customers visiting the storefronts, according to officials. United Power service representatives have been working remotely to assist customers. Once employees return to the office all staff members from the other locations will be transferred to the Brighton Headquarters.

“Whenever there is a sizable layoff, the business must report it to the state,” Giron said. “What that does is set off a series of events. The county workforce development services will get involved with the business to get access to those employees and get them services.”

“We have set initiatives in motion to make sure as many as possible of the 450 colleagues from our factories can move to other parts of our operations, but unfortunately, we still have to say goodbye to colleagues,” company COO Nielsen said in the statement.

For the second year in a row, Brighton Youth Commissioner Giana Rocha is a youth representative of the National League of Cities 2021 Council on Youth, Education and Families.

A city statement said the council guides and oversees the work of NLC’s Institute for Youth, Education and Families. In addition, the council fosters peer-learning and networking opportunities for elected municipal leaders and youth leaders, stimulates effective leadership on behalf of children, youth and families and elevates the voices of city and youth leaders in broader discussions of the needs of children, youth and families.

“We are so proud of Giana’s reappointment,” said Brighton Mayor Greg Mills. “This shows just how strong our Brighton Youth Commission is and their passion to make a difference in their community. We look forward to seeing Giana growing her knowledge and accomplishments in this position.”

Local artist featured

Avery Jacobson, a 2020 Brighton High School graduate was one of 51 international students to have her artwork featured at the 2020 College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Art and Design digital exhibition.

Her drawing, which was part of the 2020 AP Art and Design digital exhibition (http://bit. ly/2MP1TCi), “I Want to Hold Your Hand” is inspired by the Beatles song of the same name.

According to her artist statement, she reflected on the inspiration for the piece.

“The song is blatantly about wanting to hold someone’s hand and express their love. To add more depth to this illustration,” the statement said, “I decided to draw both a black-and a-white hand in the embrace. I never see enough depictions of interracial couples in artwork… I hope this work conveys a sense of unity and love between the people in the picture and the people who look at it.”

One Kind Word

Anythink Libraries’ One Kind Word project continues through Friday, Feb. 26.

This three-week initiative encourages customers to share messages of kindness through personal notes and recordings.

Residents can pick up notecards and artistic supplies at their local Anythink to create custom cards that spread cheer to those in need.

Cards can be returned to the library, where they will be collected and distributed to organizations across Adams County, including Cold Weather Care, Comfort Keepers, Eagle View Adult Center, International Hearing Dog, Inc., Mapleton School District, Project Angel Heart and The Senior Hub. In addition, individuals can call 303-405-3222 to leave or hear uplifting messages from fellow community members. Messages will be broadcast online and on 91.9 FM at Anythink’s locations.

Anythink is also hosting several virtual workshops with author Kat Vellos and Colorado poet laureate Bobby LeFebre. These workshops are free and open to all; advance registration required at anythinklibraries.org.

Archery class

Barr Lake State Park’s free archery instruction course offers two sessions Sunday, Feb. 28. One class is at 10 a.m. and one at 11 a.m.

The course is limited to 10 students who are at least age 6.

Spring cleaning at city cemeteries

The city of Brighton cemetery staff is set to begin its spring cleaning duties March 1.

A city statement said staff will be removing decorations from graves to prepare for annual maintenance, such as mowing, aerating and overseeding. Out of respect to those laid to rest and their families and friends, a city statement said nothing affixed to the headstone

itself will be taken.

All items that are removed will be collected and placed around a tree in the area where a loved one is buried. After a period of two weeks, staff will properly dispose of the items.

Garden in a box

The city of Brighton’s utilities department, in partnership with Resource Central, launches the Garden in a Box program when sales to the public begin on Monday, March 1.

City utility customers can receive a $25 discount off of the water-wise garden kits while supplies last. Residents can choose from 12 kits with the $25 discount, with boxes ranging in size from 60 to 100 square feet and including anywhere from 15 to 32 starter plants. Gift certificates are also available for purchase ranging from $25 to $150 ($25 discount also applicable).

Road closures

The city of Brighton announced construction on the Brighton North Outfall Project is under way.

A city statement said workers will construct storm drain improvements to mitigate nuisance flooding to residents north of downtown Brighton. Work on Fourth Avenue. Construction between Longs Peak and Brighton streets should conclude March 8.

During this time, Fourth Avenue between Longs Peak and Brighton streets will be closed to traffic, and street parking will not be available. Residents will be able to park in their driveways overnight.

In addition, the intersection at Longs Peak and Fourth Avenue will be closed to thru traffic.

Three costly options to upgrade wastewater plant Council wants more data before a decision

After an hour’s discussion about Fort Lupton’s mandatory wastewater improvements Feb. 18, one thing was quite clear.

“We have to spend a lot of money,” Mayor Zo Stieber said.

“Unfortunately, it has to come from citizens. I don’t like it.”

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is forcing several cities, including Fort Lupton, to clean up the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and chlorophyll in surface water. More than 60 cities filed an appeal, citing the more than $1.5 billion combined cost of the repairs. CDPHE turned it down.

The deadline to fulfill the order is January 2023. The city filed an appeal for an 18-month extension before putting the guidelines into place. As of late last week, there had been no response.

City Administrator Chris Cross outlined three scenarios for council to consider. The costs range from $38 billion (to keep and upgrade the existing plant) to $44 billion to sign on with Metro Wastewater District to $55 billion to sign on with the St. Vrain Wastewater District.

Cross outlined three potential loan arrangements as well.

Two of those arrangements are through the state. One is from a group called Stiefel Finance.

Yearly payments would be from $1.8 million to $1.9 million. Total interest payments on the low end

are $16 million and $32.5 million on the high end.

At present, the city charges about $24 for water bills. The potential add-ons to residential water bills were $33.50 on the low side and more than $50 on the high side.If the city opts for either the Metro district or St. Vrain’s, there will be court costs to undo existing cases. Cross said the range for those was between $250,000 and $350,000, depending on the district.

Cross also outlined a series of factors council can’t depend on in making a decision. Those included future residential construction, construction challenges to connect the existing plant to either the Metro district or the St. Vrain district (the connection includes 10 miles of pipeline) and unforeseen challenges at the city’s plant.

“We can’t bank on how many houses are going to be built?” asked Stieber.

“That’s right,” Cross said.

Councilman Tommy Holton didn’t think council was ready to make a choice. But he and Stieber had a preference.

“We should either redo our plant or go to Metro,” said Holton. “I’m not comfortable losing local control. We’re going to have to lobby like crazy.”

Councilman David Crespin agreed to take the St. Vrain district out of the equation. Both he and Holton agreed council needed much more information before making a final decision.

Council scheduled a public hearing for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at the recreation center, 203 S. Harrison Ave.
