Adams County and Platte Valley Medical Center have partnered to open a COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the Adams County Government Center Conference Center, 4430 S. Adams County Pkwy., Brighton.

The clinic is open by appointment only, to those age 70 and over.

No walk-ins will be accepted. Preregistration is required. Information on the registration process is provided below.

“We know vaccines from the Federal Government are in short supply right now, but we are very optimistic supplies will increase soon. We want to make sure as soon as we get a vaccine, we get that vaccine to someone who needs it, and we couldn’t do that without strong partners like Platte Valley,” said Emma Pinter, Adams County Commissioner and Board Chair. “This is a critical step in getting our community healthy, keeping our hospitals from being overwhelmed, and getting our economy back on track.”

Adams County and Platte Valley Medical Center are committed to equity and prioritizing getting everyone eligible in the community access to the vaccine, especially those communities that have been hardest hit by the pandemic.

vital public health service to those aged 70 and over, per state guidelines. We appreciate our partners at Adams County who have generously supplied us with additional space and resources.”

The standard hours of operation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Thursday through Sunday, with an hourlong break at noon. However, the hours the vaccination site is open will depend on the amount of vaccine the hospital receives.

County residents and those seeking a vaccine should check carefully at the time of scheduling and just before your appointment to confirm the current hours of operation.

Vaccination appointments may be self-scheduled through SCL Health’s MyChart, program https://mychart.sclhealth.org/ mychart/ on the internet. Patients may also fill out the online form at sclhealth.org/CoVidVaccine to be notified when a vaccine appointment is available for them. Appointments will only be available for individuals who are eligible for vaccination based on state guidelines, and outreach will be randomized and equitable.

Henry voted chair for Adams Commission

The Adams County Board of Commissioners unanimously elected Eva J. Henry as board chair for 2021 at their meeting Jan. 26.

Henry has previously served as board chair in 2013 and 2017. She’s beginning her final term as the represenative for Adams County’s district 1.She was first elected to the board in 2012 and re-elected in 2016 and 2020.

Henry inherits the board chair role from Commissioner Emma Pinter, who just completed her first stint as chair. Commissioner Charles “Chaz” Tedesco, representing District 2, was chosen unanimously as the board’s vicechair for 2021.

Brighton to host memorial wall in September Traveling ‘Wall that Heals’ set for September visit

The ceremony for the arrival of The Wall That Heals, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial replica wall, will include honors for veterans who died after coming home from the war.

The wall will be in Brighton Sept. 2-5 in Carmichael Park, 650 E.

Southern St., behind City Hall.

A city of Brighton statement included a request for names and photos of veterans who passed away since they came home for the “In Memory Honor Roll” display.

“Since the Vietnam War ended, thousands of Vietnam veterans have died each year due to Agent Orange exposure, PTSD and suicide, cancer and other causes related to their service,” the statement read.

Council asks for more library relocation data

The Fort Lupton Public and School Library still has plans to move, but its favored location – Vincent Village, near state Highway 52 and U.S. Highway 85 – is the favored location among Fort Lupton City Council members.

The library narrowed its search for a new home to three locations – northeast of Fort Lupton High School, across the street from the Safeway store or near the Cannery.

The library wants Vincent Village, even if a new round of inspections decreases some of the available land.

During a Jan. 26 town hall meeting, Mayor Zo Stieber said that on a personal level she is not in favor of putting the library near a large retail area.

“Everyone has to cross the street to get to the building,” she said.

“It’s not as welcoming as other choices.”Library Director Sarah Franks said the two other locations were either more expensive (Lupton Village) or the land area “wasn’t going to work for us” (near the Cannery).

“I’m not in favor of it going on city property,” said councilman Tommy Holton.

City administrator Chris Cross said the library board examined a “lot of properties” during the search for a new home.

“The best choice is Vincent Village,” he told councilors. “They are going to do more diligence to make sure it’s big enough to handle what the library needs. It seems to be the most viable spot.”

The Wall That Heals to Brighton. “I encourage members of the community to submit the names of Vietnam veterans who have passed so that we can honor that sacrifice and help keep their memory alive.”

It’s free to include a veteran. Complete a short application and submit the veteran’s DD214 showing their proof of service in Vietnam, a copy of their death certificate and two photographs.

Online remembrance pages include each honoree with their photo and biography. Family members can share the page and leave remembrances about their loved one.

There will be an invitation to In Memory weekend in Washington, D.C., for a ceremony.

“I’m not wild about Vincent Village,” Stieber said.

City vehicles

In other business, council took up a proposal to replace some of its city vehicles.

The city has 48 vehicles in its fleet.

Larry Caster, senior account executive with Enterprise Fleet, said 10 percent of the vehicles were at least 20 years of age and 19 percent were at least 15 years old.

His suggestion was to replace two police cars and to enter into a lease arrangement for 17 vehicles, including two police vehicles. The annual cost is $168,000 per year for five years (which leads to outright ownership), plus maintenance.

Caster called it an “open-ended equity lease” with no charges for wear and tear.

“Older vehicles have higher maintenance costs, they aren’t as reliable, and they aren’t as safe,” Caster said.

“You save money by leasing. We considered safety. There will be less down, and your employees will be happier.”

City administrator Chris Cross said the biggest impact of a lease arrangement would be on the police department.

“We’ll research more,” Stieber said. “But it’s looking somewhat attractive, considering the age and safety of our fleet and maintenance costs. The price would go up as we swap more police units each year, assuming this was successfully adopted.”

The discussion came during a town-hall format in which the council cannot make decisions.

Briefs Chamber award winners

The Greater Brighton Chamber of Commerce handed out its annual awards Jan. 28.

The Business of the Year was JnR Insurance, and the Small Business of the Year was Samantha Markey Photography. Surge Spin received the chamber’s New Business of the Year award, and Amy Flora received the Community Volunteer of the Year.

Co-op Cares Fund

The United Power board of directors allocated $250,000 to the co-op’s Co-op Cares Fund for this year. The fund started in April in response to the coronavirus pandemic and is designed to provide financial assistance to members who have been impacted, especially through illness or loss of employment.

“We’ve seen an increase in the number of members who are struggling to make their payments because of the lasting effects of this pandemic,” said Laurie Burkhart, United Power’s chief financial officer, in a statement.

With Ultra-low Rates, Should You Still Invest in Bonds?

Interest rates are near historic lows. That means the interest payments you get from bonds will also be smaller than they were just a few years ago. Should you still invest in bonds?

Anythink libraries reopen

Branches to keep COVID protocols in place

Anythink Libraries reopened their doors Feb. 1, thanks to a decline in coronavirus cases in Adams County.

The libraries in Thornton, Brighton and Commerce city will be open from noon to 6 p.m.

Mondays through Thursdays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

A press statement said the libraries will resume COVID-19 precautions that have been in place since the start of the pandemic. Those include more janito-

rial services, less capacity in the building, better ventilation and quarantine of all returned library materials up to one week.

Customers will have to keep 6 feet from staff and other visitors.

The staff will encourage visits be limited to 60 minutes. Masks are required; free masks are available.

“We are eager to welcome everyone back to our libraries,” said

Anythink Director Pam Sandlian Smith in the statement. “They are designed to be warm and inviting, and we look forward to reconnecting with our customers in person.”

Curbside service will be available at all locations. The statement said visitors should place holds in advance, park in a designated spot and remain in their vehicles.

RE-8 district facing budget shortfall Officials say it could have been worse

Thanks to the impacts of coronavirus, the Weld RE-8 School District is facing a deficit of about $113,000.

RE-8 Director of Business Services Jessica Holbrook said bankrupt oil-and-gas companies and the resulting loss of what she called “a huge source of revenue” didn’t help the district’s cause. The assessed valuation in the district dropped by about $2 million.

There was a change in the revenue stream, too. Holbrook said because the district is fully funded from local sources, the state normally requires

her staff could find a qualified replacement.

“In a few of the cities I’ve worked for, I’ve had the privilege of hiring attorneys,” she said. “I can tell you that those attorneys are still there and they have done an excellent job and I’m confident that working with my staff we can find some good candidates for you to consider.”

The council unanimously accepted Bajorek’s resignation letter Jan. 12, a week after an hour-long executive session that ended in the council suspending him. The city has not said why he was suspended.

However, Mayor Pro Tem Matt Johnston had expressed dissatisfaction with Bajorek before, particularly regarding 2019’s mayoral recall election and a city agreement regarding the development of streets in Johnston’s neighborhood.

But this time, from start to finish council should be all involved with this process.”

Watts said that during the most recent search, the 2020 search to hire Bais DiSessa herself, said the mayor and mayor pro tem selected the favorite firms, leaving the final decision to the full council.

“I don’t want that. No offense to anybody, but I don’t want that twoparty system,” Watt said. “I want all of us to be involved as much as possible. I know it’s going to be difficult because we can’t all be in the same room without calling it an executive session. So I know there will be difficult logistics involved, but I’d like to throw that out there.”

Councilor Clint Blackhurst said past job search efforts turned up candidates that should not have been considered.

“I’m not impressed by going outside,” he said. “When we have consultants that don’t do their job, properly, it ends up being a bigger burden on our staff.”

“There is nowhere we can reduce expenses?” asked board member Cody LeBlanc. “Forty-four percent of our budget is salaries,” Holbrook said. “Nineteen percent goes to benefits. The only place to do a reduction is more economical staff positions.”

The RE-8 school board adopted an amended $37 million budget -- including the shortfall -- by a vote of 4-1 during its Jan. 28 meeting.

“I will vote no because of the deficit,” LeBlanc said before casting his vote. “Without additional funds, it would have been larger.”

Later in the meeting, the board approved a negotiation agreement between the district and its employees. LeBlanc voted against that, too.

“I don’t believe we should be appropriating additional expenses to salaries, anything that’s going to raise our budget,” he said. He and the rest of the board unanimously approved salary schedules for licensed, administrative and classified employees in the district.

One area where Re-8 isn’t paying money to district employees is for food service. The district has a $41,000, one-year contract with Chartwell Food Service.

Holbrook said thanks to funding from the state Department of Education and the United States Department of Agriculture, free meals are available to all students every day.

“No kid has had to pay for lunch,” she told the board. “It’s been interesting on my side. We haven’t had any revenue. It makes fluctuations hard.”

Downturns and mishaps can’t stop Colorado entrepreneur Commerce City resident shares experiences mishaps in new book

Since COVID-19 has impacted businesses and forced people shelter in place, one Colorado entrepreneur said now is a good time to remember that there is plenty of room for hope.

“You will survive this, you will!

It may feel like walking through hell for a period of time but you will survive. The best advice is to have a concrete solid plan to move forward,” said Susan Frew, of Commerce City. “Stick to a budget and get humble before you do anything else. Your family and your team need to become the priority and it is your responsibility to do whatever it takes to keep your business going to the best of your ability.”

Frew has included her experiences, her successes and setbacks in a new book from the CampExperience Network. The book, “The Stew: Smart Talk Exceptional Women: Arts & Insights,” features more than 200 pages of inspiring stories, artwork and poems.

“I think that stories of overcoming adversity are even more important than the feel-good stories that we see so often,” Frew said.

Frew’s contribution to the book shared her own emotional stories of how many times she had fallen down and turned her life around.

Since she was 16-year old, Frew has had 17 broken bones, 10 concussions and developed a rare disease called Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis which causes the soft tissue in her body and her bones to form spurs.

“There is no cure for this condition. As a matter of fact many people with this disease are in a wheelchair or homebound,” said Frew.

The condition impacts Frew’s shoulders, hips, knees and ankles.

With exercise and moving she is able to keep strong until a cure can be found.

Frew was raised in New Jersey and in lived in New York City for many years. She went to school at Regis University. She was there in New York during a recession and she could not afford to spend money on high-dollar designer fashions.

So she discovered thrift stores and found designer outfits that were inexpensive.

“From there on she started a a nonprofit Thrifinista, it’s an organization that helps other organizations in the community with fun bus trips to thrift stores,” said Frew.

She met her husband William in Breckenridge at one of her business coaching seminars. They have one step daughter and two male furry friends. And also have a Brazilian exchange student who has been living with them since 2017.

“He is like a son to us,” said Frew.

Coaching to success

Even though Frew dealt with a history of physical health issues it did not keep her from success. Frew was General Manager for AT&T and got the opportunity for an international assignment living in Grenada, St. Vincent, and the Grenadines for two years.

Upon returning in 2009, she purchased a coaching franchise to help business owners impacted by national recession.

“I felt as though I could really make an impact and in 2009 when I was coaching, I helped many businesses through the recession, said Frew. “I had one large client that did not sell his business as per my advice and he still thanks me for it every time I see him,” she added.

Frew’s coaching business led her to the next business venture, Sunshine Plumbing, Heating & Air. That was when she met her husband William.

“We started the company from the ground up with women customers being our target market,” said Frew. He was plumber. “We merged our collective talents and Sunshine Plumbing & Air was born,” she said.
