COVID vaccinations underway at Platte Valley Brighton hospital staff excited, relieved to begin getting immunity shots

Christmas came a few days early for Dennis Bradberry, a respiratory therapist at Brighton’s Platte Valley Medical Center, and the rest of his hospital colleagues in the form of sore arms, a bright orange sticker and a growing immunity to the COVID-19 virus.

“Everybody is saying `My arm is sore,’ but it’s worth it,” Bradberry said. “When you’ve seen what we see all day, every day, it’s totally worth it.”

Bradberry received his vaccine Dec. 23, the second day of COVID-19 vaccines at the hospital. Caitlyn Major, communications manager for the hospital, said they set up a room to bring in all 900 hospital associates, get them screened and vaccinated.

Once they get their shots, each associate is monitored for 15 minutes to check for allergic reactions and then sent on their way.

They must return for a second shot after 28 days to reach full immunity.

But rather than just sitting around, the hospital’s post-vaccination waiting area has a celebratory feeling, as associates talk, eat candy and share stories.

For Broadberry, it’s easy to understand why the employees are excited to have the vaccines. A respiratory therapist in critical care, he’s been treating COVID1-9 patients since March.

“That’s what’s awesome about this today,” Bradberry said. “This is the first step towards ending this.

And rather than just having us at the hospital being the ones dealing with everything, this gives every individual person the ability to help us out.”

The hospital began offering the vaccine to local fire fighters, police and emergency medical personel on Dec. 30.

Platte Valley is receiving the second vaccine to be released in the United States, manufactured by biotech company Moderna. The first vials reached the Brighton hospital Dec. 22 in the afternoon. Staff were set up to begin injecting staff in two hours and they had given the vaccine to 99 people by the end of the day.

“It won’t take us very long,” John Hicks, president and CEO of Platte Valley, said. “I think, a little after Christmas and we’ll have the majority of employees and medical staff vaccinated.”

The Colorado Department of Public Health is working out the next stages of vaccination, which would include seniors living in group situations, police, fire and other first responders. Hicks said he does not know what those next stages will look like, but said he’d be pleased to have Platte Valley involved.

the first vaccine released in the U.S. and the protein it uses requires it be kept in ultracold conditions, about 94 degrees below zero. That requires special cold equipment and room for storage. And once vials are thawed for use, they must be used within two hours.

“Moderna uses a different protein,” he said. “It took them a little longer to work with it, but it’s much more stable. We can keep it in a freezer, just a regular freezer.”

The vaccine has a much longer life once it’s been thawed, of about six hours. He expects to see the Moderna vaccine being made available in rural areas and at neighborhood shops when it’s publicly available.

Sore arms

Hicks noted that all of his employees will be walking around with sore arms from the vaccination. That’s a good thing, Hicks said.

“That’s how you know it’s working,” he said. “You want that reaction, to some extent. You want your immune system to recognize that it’s been injected with something that’s not quite right and begin building defenses. That how vaccines work and the pain you get shows that it’s doing the jobs.

State to loosen restrictions, but Adams County curfew to remain in place Confusion over governor’s surprise announcement to move counties to level orange

Adams County will remain under a stricter public health order next week, while restrictions will loosen elsewhere.

In a surprise announcement on Dec. 30, Gov. Jared Polis said “level red” counties will move to “level orange” on Jan. 4. However, Adams County is under a Tri-County Health Department public health mandate, which includes a curfew, that is set to expire Jan. 7.

Given the unexpected nature of Polis’ announcement, the county is making its best guess. The state has previously said that a stricter order — be it a state or count one — supersedes a less strict one.

“The public health order is currently still in place,” said county spokesperson Christa Bruning, “I have not been given any additional guidance.” That includes the question of whether Tri-County might rescind or extend the order.

Mabelann K. (Glasmann) Dinges born November 18, 1932 left her earthly body to be with the Lord on December 15, 2020.

Mabelann will live on in the hearts and memories of her family, including her daughters, Carol Kuberski, Debbie Clark, Nancy Lewis, Charlene Thompson, Cindy Sheldon and their husbands; along with 14 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alois Dinges Jr. and son, Kenneth Dinges.

Mabelann is a native of Colorado whose grandfather, William Kriley homesteaded what is now called Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

Mabelann graduated from Denver High School and proudly sang on the radio at 16 years old. She was happiest when she was at the family cabin with her husband, children, nieces and nephews. Mabelann’s wishes were for people to love God and each other, from the “Top of Your Hearts to the Bottom of Your Hearts.” Her sweetest comment over the decades is that her goal was to make it to Heaven and tend Jesus’ gardens. Due to Covid19 mandates, funeral services will be held in spring/summer of 2021. Tabor Funeral Home, Brighton, Colorado handled arrangements.

Mable Louise Postal, a resident of Brighton for more than 50 years, died Dec. 11 of natural causes at the home of her nephew in Westminster. She was 93.

Mable was born to G. J. “Joe” Moon and Wilma Barden Moon in Akron on June 3, 1927. Her mother died when Mable was just two years old. When an Iowa single mother, Bernice Thurber, heard from her aunt in Fleming about the widowed farmer with three young children, she moved to the Moon farm north of Dailey to become the housekeeper and nanny. Mable and her two older siblings, Richard and Marie, grew up with Thurber’s daughter, Winona Thurber.

At a very young age, Mable lost much of her hearing after suffering measles and mumps at the same time. Even so, she

attended Pumpkin Vine School, a one-room schoolhouse north of Dailey, and Dailey High School, graduating in 1945.

Mable married Theodore Paul “Ted” Postal Feb. 6, 1953, in Denver.

The couple enjoyed square dancing and traveling. Ted died in 1991.

For many years, Mable worked at a checkbook and passbook printing company in Denver. After her retirement, she continued to raise a garden and began playing bingo at the Brighton Senior Center.

Mable is survived by her stepsister Winona, two cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation was entrusted to All-States Cremation. A celebration of life will be held in the future.

Nancy Joan Cummings Osage City--Nancy Joan Cummings, 79, passed away on Monday, December 14, 2020 at her home in Osage City, Kansas. She was born on November 9, 1941 in Burlingame, Kansas, the daughter of Arthur and Nadene Wiscombe Williamson.

Nancy graduated from Osage City High School in 1959 and had lived in Osage City until moving to Colorado in 1980 and then moved back to Osage in 2018.

Nancy was a clerk and manager for Circle K and George’s True Value Hardware in Ft. Lupton, Colorado. She enjoyed quilt making, sewing, flower gardening, helping others, and was a lover of animals, especially her dogs.

On August 15, 1968, Nancy was united in marriage to Raymond Terry Cummings in Osage City.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Nadene; her son,

Mark Smothers in June of 2011; by a grandson, Daniel Lira on January 1, 1991; by her brother, Edward Willamson; and by her sister, Donna Bennett.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Ray of 52 years; her two daughters, Sally Smothers and Brenda Smothers, both of Osage City; her step son, Steven Cummings of Osage City; her brother, Robert Williamson of Osage City; by five grandchildren, Tara Peters of Overland Park, Jesse Grimmett and Luke Grimmett, both of Manhattan, Hayley Smothers of Brighton, Colorado and Danea Dedig of Westminster, Colorado; and seven great-grandchildren, Daniel Jones, Brycen Peters, Corbin Peters, Dorothy Dedig, Natalie Grimmett, Hannah Densing and Abigail Densing.

Nancy was cremated and graveside memorial services will be announced in the spring. Feltner Funeral Home in Lyndon is assisting the family.

Rose Marie Unrein, age 93, of Brighton, Colorado, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2020 at Brookdale Assisted Living.

Rose was born September 19, 1927, in Henderson, Colorado to Katherin Schwert and John Case.

Rose spent her adolescence working on the Case Farm, where she harvested and milked cows with her ten siblings.

Once graduated from Brighton High School, Rose went to work at The Denver Dry Goods Company, where she had an incredible knack for sales and people skills. She then married the love of her life Robert “Bob” Unrein. They married November 15, 1948 and had two children, Doug and Krisann.

Rose was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and President of Alden Rosary.

Later, she continued her career as a Sales Rep. and Showroom Manager at the Denver Merchandise Mart with Brockish Sales for thirty-eight years.

After retirement, she volunteered her time to the Brighton Senior Center and Platte Valley Hospital.

She truly loved the simple pleasures in

Northglenn and Westminster cap delivery service fees City Councils take action against third-party delivery services in defense of local restaurants

Food delivery services like Grubhub, DoorDash and UberEats will have their delivery fees capped at 15 percent in both Northglenn and Westminster, part of an effort to help local restaurants.

Westminster and Northglenn city councils approved regulations capping food delivery service fees at separate meetings Dec. 21.

The Adams County Commissioners approved a similar measure at their Dec. 15 meeting.

“The COVID-19 crisis has hit our local restaurants and their owners and employees particularly hard,” said commission Chair Emma Pinter. “As the state has enacted stricter safety protocols that currently prohibit indoor dining in Adams County, we wanted to make sure they aren’t taken advantage of when offering takeout to their customers.”

The measures aim to offer financial relief to struggling restaurants.

The state legislature passed a bill — which state Rep. Shannon Bird from Westminster sponsored — in its recent special session granting cities and counties the authority to regulate companies like DoorDash, Postmates, Grubhub and UberEats.

Terrence Gordon thinks there is a middle ground in what he sees as a black-and-white conversation about policing in America.

Thornton appointed Gordon chief in early December after former Chief Randy Nelson retired in June.

Coming from Milwaukee, Gordon believes his array of experiences have equipped him for this pivotal moment in U.S. communities.

“There’s nobody who can say that I do not understand what’s going on in our society,” Gordon said. Before Gordon joined the force, a young relative of his died in police custody.

Police shot other relatives of his.

“I grew up disliking the police,” he said.

However, those negative experiences fueled his decision to join the police, where he could model a different behavior than what he saw. In 1995, he joined the Milwaukee Police Department. His career began as a patrol officer before moving on to investigations for 11 years. After that, he was captain, then director of the police academy, and then deputy commander of the administration bureau. After working in Milwaukee for 25 years, Thornton hired him.

Gordon values the time he spent in each role, especially as director of the police academy. There, he learned training is more about quality, not quantity. “It’s not necessarily a question of more training. It’s making sure your training, while it’s aligned with best practices, but also aligned with some inadequacies you’ve observed with serving your

Both the Westminster and Northglenn regulations cap the delivery fee at 15 percent.

Both cities will also prohibit services from garnishing tips, delivering an order with the restaurant’s consent. They also require services to disclose fees and other costs before the order is finalized. Both city councils unanimously approved the measures at Dec. 21 meetings.

Chad Horrell a representative of DoorDash, spoke against Northglenn’s regulations at its meeting.

“We oppose price controls like the one proposed. We believe there are much better ways to support local restaurants to get through the pandemic,” the representative said.

He also asked council to strike the disclosure language requirement.

However, Northglenn City Council was set on the proposed regulations and passed the ordinance without a second thought.

Westminster city councilors were more reluctant. Several councilors were concerned about the government intervening in the free market economy.

“I agonized over this thought this weekend. I have a belief that if government is the answer to the fix, then we’ve got a bigger problem,” said Councilman Rich Seymour.

Councilors David DeMott and Lindsey Smith expressed similar concerns.

However, all three said the regulations are temporarily necessary.

The ordinances in both cities will expire on March 31. Adams County’s restrictions end when the indoor capacity restrictions imposed on retail food establishments due to the COVID-19 pandemic are removed.

The two cities will be joining other metro cities that have approved similar measures, including Denver, Broomfield, Aurora and Commerce City.

Go green and recycle your Christmas tree

The City of Brighton will offer Christmas tree recycling from Dec. 26 - Jan. 15 at the three locations; Brighton Park south parking lot 9th Ave. and Midland St., the Brighton Sports Complex 1111 Judicial Center Dr. and Ken Mitchell Park, 889 Kinglet Ct. Trees can be dropped off at any time of the day. Residents are asked to remove everything from their tree before dropping it off. Only Christmas trees will be accepted. No yard waste or lumber is allowed. Trees will be chipped and mulch will be available Jan. 18 on a first-come, first-serve basis at each location listed above.

Brighton Recreation Center offers Annual Pass Sale

Get fit and save money in the new year with the Brighton Recreation Center’s annual membership pass sale for 2021. Through March 5, the Center will be offering a 21-percent discount on all annual passes for 2021. For example, an annual pass for resident adults that normally sells for $260 can be purchased for $205.40. Non-resident adult passes that sell for $315 can be purchased for $248.85 while the program lasts.

The discounts also apply to youth, senior, couple and family passes.

Membership activation begins when you are ready to workout (restricted up to one year from the purchase date of the pass - no additional exceptions will be given).

Adams County Free Legal Clinic

Despite the COVID-19 closures of libraries across Colorado, the Virtual Pro Se Clinic (VPC) clinics will still be held Jan. 5, from 2-3:30 p.m.

As a COVID work-around, instead of clinic patrons coming in-person to your local Anythink Library (which is limited in access), the volunteer attorney will call each clinic patron’s telephone directly during the clinic hours, using the phone number provided to your library staff.

Briefs that Heidi Williams, former mayor of Thornton and a graduate of Brighton High School, received the group’s Alumni of the Plains award for her efforts with the opioid crisis.

The award honors people who have graduated from one of the high schools in the 15-county region the group covers. A press statement said each one was selected for an impactful and successful career in their communities, their region, the state or nationwide.

Anythink holiday closures

Anythink Library announced its locations and curbside services for the holidays. Curbside services will also close at 3 p.m Thursday, Dec. 31, and remain closed Friday, Jan. 1, in observance of the Near Year’s Day holiday. Curbside services will resume during regular hours Saturday, Jan. 2.

Manhole work

The city of Brighton’s utilities department started work on a nearly $400,000 manhole rehabilitation project.

It includes the rehabilitation of 214 manholes. The project takes place west of 11th Avenue, from Bromley Lane to WCR 2. The manholes are estimated at 50 years old which, over time, need to be rehabilitated to secure structural integrity.

Work includes patching deteriorated concrete, putting a barrier on the manholes so they can’t deteriorate and placing a multi-layer polymer on the manholes for structural integrity. The new product is expected to last 100 years.

The work will take place primarily in neighborhood streets, with some work on major roadways like Bromley Lane and Bridge Street (traffic control will be present on those roads). Notifications will be sent to residents who will be directly impacted by the project. No service disruptions are anticipated.

The project was expected to be complete Dec. 31.

Near Year’s Eve somewhere

This year’s New Year’s Eve Somewhere event at Barr Lake State Park, 13401 Picadilly Road, will be a drive-through event. There will be four different event times to ensure social distancing. Start times are 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, or 1pm. There will be crafts, party favors and snacks to go. Call 303-659-6005.

Growing grads FAFSA nights

The last in a series of programs about applying for financial aid is set as an in-person forum at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Anythink Library, 327 E. Bridge St. A city of Brighton statement said the programs include presentations on how to pay for postsecondary education, as well as representatives from FAFSA and partnering schools and organizations to assist and answer questions.

Brighton chamber awards

The Brighton Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau opened up nominations for the group’s 2020 awards program.

The virtual event will be Thursday, Jan. 28. The nomination categories include Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Small Business of the Year, New Business of the Year, Outstanding Young Professional, Community Organization of the Year and Community Volunteer of the Year.

Road work

The city of Brighton and Asphalt Specialties Co. continue their mill and overlay work along a three-quarters of a mile stretch of Medical Center Drive. The work is expected to finish by Jan. 31. A city statement said the work includes subgrade prep, asphalt removal, patching, milling, asphalt overlay and restripiing. Construction will take place 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Mayor/commissioner awards

The mayors and commissioners of Adams County are looking for 2021 nominations for the Adams County Mayors and Commissioners Youth Awards. This award focuses on teenagers who have triumphed over great odds and serve as inspiration and role models for their peers, according to a statement.

The program recognizes young people in grades six through 12 (up to 20 years old) who have overcome personal adversity to create a positive change in their own lives or for those around them.

“This program provides businesses, the community and civic leaders an opportunity to actively demonstrate their support for the young people in our community and recognize them for their accomplishments. Businesses may also help by making a monetary or in-kind donation,” said a statement.

Scholarships available

Scholarships for high-school seniors are available through DriveSafe Driving Schools. The firm will offer a $1,500 scholarship to a student who plans to attend college in 2021.

The deadline is March 1. The winners will be notified by April 15.

Students must complete the application and submit a qualifying entry of either an essay or other creative expression posted on social media. Posts must be made on one of the following platforms: Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, along with #DriveSafeScholarship.

Grab-and-go lunches School District 27J expanded its locations for free grab-and-go meals for those 1 to 18 years of age.

The pick-up points are Northeast Elementary (new, 1605 E. Longs Peak St.), Brighton High School (270 S. Eighth Ave.), Prairie View High School (12909 E. 120th Ave.), and Riverdale Ridge High School (13380 Yosemite St.). The pick-up tiimes changed, too. They are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The next pick-up date is Jan. 5.

Each student will receive a halfdozen breakfasts and lunches.

Legal self-help clinic

The Access to Justice Committee hosts a free, legal self-help clinic from 2 to 3:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month. The program is for customers who don’t have legal representation and need help navigating through legal issues.

Volunteer attorneys are available to discuss such topics as family law, civil litigation, property and probate law.

Art in the Park goes virtual

The city of Brighton’s 2020 Brighton Art in the Park is on. Virtually.

Online visitors may view the work of 27 artists and more than 100 pieces on its site www.brightonartinthepark.com through the end of the year.

“Due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions, we were unable to host this wonderful event in Carmichael Park this year,” arts and culture coordinator David Gallegos said in a statement. “However, the event committee did not want to miss an opportunity to showcase and support the work of our amazing artist community. We hope this virtual gallery can provide some light during these difficult times.”

By navigating the Brighton Art in the Park: Virtual Edition, visitors will be able to view the artwork of local, regional and international artists online and purchase the pieces directly from the artist, all from the comfort of their home.

Eye for Art

The city of Brighton’s Eye for Art program announced the new 2020 Eye for Art “Through It All” electronic flip book that showcases art and jewelry on display at Brighton City Hall.

A city statement said the current art exhibit, “Through It All,” features 28 local and regional artists displaying oils, acrylics, inks, watercolors, photography, digital paintings, feather art and jewelry. Visitors cannot get into City Hall, but the flip book provides residents the opportunity to still see the work of local and regional artists until such time as the building is re-open.

Featured artists include Curt Brogren, Ron Cupps, Lynn Cirbo, Kelley DeCleene, Kim Degnegaard, Diane Edwards, Jo Griff, Edward Hansen and Rose Mary Heidenreich.

In the week before Christmas, Brighton High School swimmer Jespyn Bishop made his list, checked it twice and decided McKendree University was more than nice enough for him to enroll.

Bishop plans to play on the school’s water polo team.

“Out of all the options I was looking at for college, McKendree was the best option for me,” Bishop said.

“Going there would allow me to play water polo, have good academics, get a four-year degree and, over the course of four years, it had the best financial plan where I wouldn’t have too much student loans.

“Although it is 13 hours away from Brighton not much will change, because the college is in a small town, and the city of St. Louis is only 30 minutes away.”

Bishop was able to see the campus twice, one in June for an unofficial visit and once in October for his allowed official visit with the water polo team.

“It was interesting seeing the campus empty in June, then going back in October and seeing everything functioning even with COVID going on,” Bishop said. “Both times I went, I enjoyed the smaller campus where everything is basically less than a five-minute walk away. I also loved the town of Lebanon. That definitely has a small-town vibe.

Main Street is paved with stones, and small shops line the sides of the road.”

Bishop finished 35th in the 50-yard freestyle and 29th in the 100- freestyle at the state swimming meet in 2019. He helped the Bulldogs to a 28th-place finish in the state 200freestyle relay in 2019 and to a 30thplace finish in the 200- medley relay.

There was no state meet in 2020 because of coronavirus.

“I would more say it was the best option for me across the board,” Bishop said. “It gave me the best financial, athletic and academic options. There were other colleges that definitely had its advantages. But in the end, I felt McKendree was better for me.”

During his two visits, Bishop was able to meet and visit with the head coach and the assistant coach of the water polo team.

“I had been talking with the assistant coach specifically since March,” he said. “I got Jespyn Bishop. to meet and COURTESY PHOTO hang out with their team in October on campus where they showed me around.

It was a very good experience, and I definitely liked the environment surrounding the team, which was one of the deciding factors for me.”

When he was in middle school, Bishop liked the idea of being a lawyer. But now, things have changed.

“Now that I’m actually looking at school, I don’t really want to go through that many years of schooling,” Bishop said. “I applied to McKendree to study criminal justice, but I’m still not set on that and am looking at other options. I am still pretty open but I am beginning to make a decision on what I want to do, which will help me with deciding what I want to study.”

If Bishop moves forward with criminal justice, he may wind up in law school. His sister, Jill, talked about joining the FBI. Jespyn Bishop is the editor of the school yearbook, Reflections, so journalism – specifically photography -- is a field open for consideration, too.

“Recruiting was a little bit strange. But overall, there really weren’t any problems for me,” Bishop said. “I assume much hasn’t changed from what it was like to get recruited before the pandemic, besides the fact that there is less in-person contact. There was a lot of emailing and a few Zoom calls where I got to talk with the coaches individually, and also a combine where a bunch of coaches, including McKendree’s, presented to a group of athletes.”
