I am so honored to serve the Golden business community as the Executive Director of the Golden Chamber of Commerce. Having been the Membership Director for the Golden Chamber for over four years prior to this role, I have really had a chance to get to know many of our community businesses and to understand just how vital they are to Golden. And nothing highlighted that more so than the COVID-19 pandemic and the effects on our business community in 2020. My heart goes out to all the people and the businesses that have been greatly impacted over the last year. And while the year was one that challenged us and stretched us in so many ways, it also brought many new ideas. For I believe that every crisis breeds creativity and opportunities for innovation. We learned to do things in new and creative ways and thought “outside the box” like never before. I believe that crisis also promotes collaboration and caring and that by working together, we can accomplish great things. And we did! And most of all, I believe in this community – in the entrepreneurial spirit, the hard work and
the determination of our businesses; along with the love of our neighbors and residents. That love for community is what keeps Golden strong and Nola what keeps Golden moving forward. Golden Chamber of Commerce Members, The Chamber, now more than perhaps ever in our 101 years, needs to be a strong business partner for you. In 2020, we all had to pivot regarding how we did business, and the Chamber was there to support you by providing an initial supply of PPE, advocating and communicating the evolving health and business issues at the state and local level, and creatively finding ways to support businesses. Early in the year Nola Krajewski was appointed as our Executive Director and she has been providing the day-to-day leadership that has enabled us to thrive in a difficult year. We have also added new Board members and as we embark on the new year, our focus will be to help ensure the economic vitality of our city.

Our goal has not changed; the Chamber exists to provide value to our members by focusing on business advocacy. We support business commerce while helping our community grow and prosper. In 2021 we will achieve this by enhancing membership return on investment, proactively participating with government officials on policy and business issues, and ensuring our members’ voices are heard and communicated where necessary. We will continue with enhanced business networking and professional development opportunities and the Chamber’s participation in key community events will continue, especially the Golden Farmers Market, the Golden Fine Arts Festival, the Chili Cook-off, and Olde Golden Christmas festivities. Participation in those events brings people to town who then support our local businesses and economy.

For Golden, many businesses and organizations agree that being a member of the Golden Chamber of Commerce is worth it. Table Mountain Inn has been a chamber member for more than 20 years. Amber Winston, marketing manager for Table Mountain, said the chamber membership is a “wonderful” way to bring the community together to help strengthen small businesses and promote growth within in the city. “If you are looking for new opportunities to network, meet other small business owners, and expand your business network, the Golden Chamber is a great resource,” she said. “Many small businesses increase their exposure and grow revenues through involvement in the Golden Chamber.”

Eric Duran, owner of the El Dorado Mexican Restaurant in downtown Golden, said they have been members of the Golden Chamber for 10 years. “The Chamber of Commerce helps us as a business through many means of marketing,” he said. “They also help in giving us a voice when it comes to the community and some local government affairs. The great folks at the Chamber, as well as all the volunteers at the visitors

In opening their second location in September, Jessica Bobitsky, of Golden Poultry & Meats, said the first order of business was to join the Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber not only offers you a way to help get the word out about your business, but they are truly invested in the community,” she said. In the short time we have been a Chamber member, we have formed new relationships with other businesses and organizations to help Golden Poultry & Meats meet our mission of giving back to our neighbors. Simply through word of mouth between Chamber members, we have partnered with three local food banks and will be working with organizations like BGoldN’s Food Assistance Program to offer proteins, eggs, butter, and milk to local families in need. You cannot find a better way to spread the word about your business or to network and find new ways to help your business grow than by belonging to your local chamber.” For non-members considering a membership with the Golden Cham-

How the Golden Chamber responded during the COVID-19 crisis
C
OVID-19 was a huge hurdle for all of our businesses in 2020. The key term that quickly took hold for many businesses was “Pivot”. Taking what we already do and quickly turning it and changing it to meet the craziness of the world that surrounded us. And at the Golden Chamber, that reality was no different. We too had to pivot and quickly jump into new things. Here is how we responded to the COVID-19 pandemic: •
Together with Visit Golden and the newly formed Jefferson County Chambers Coalition, we launched the “TakeOut TakeOver Golden” campaign to promote restaurants that were open for take-out or had moved to a grocery model.
•
We joined the Jefferson County Economic Task Force to be a voice for our businesses. This task force included all Jeffco Chambers, city economic development officers, county commissioners, and public health officials. This group continues to meet multiple times per month.
•
With funding from Ball Corp, we were able to distribute PPE (masks, gloves, cleaning products, hand sanitizer, etc) to 100 businesses at the start of the shut-down.
•
We provided resources to our business community regarding new COVID state and local orders and changes to existing orders, funding resources, and more on a weekly basis.
•
We met with our local Congressman to hear updates and share how our business community was impacted

We launched “Chamber Check Ins” during the shut down so that we could hear from our member businesses and learn the impacts and challenges they were facing. We continued to offer networking and educational opportunities for our members, both virtually and when possible, in person.

We successfully held the Golden Farmers Market as an essential business and provided a resource for SNAP eligible shoppers to get healthy produce.

We partnered with Golden United on several educational webinars for businesses.
•
We partnered with BGOLDN on initiatives to support their efforts to bring food to those that needed it most.
•
We surveyed our business community multiple times to provide valuable feedback and information to our city and county leaders.
•
We became an official PPE distributor for the County.
•
We launched an “Open for Business” page to showcase our businesses that were still open during the shut down and we launched a Shop Local campaign.
•
We initiated two Gift Card Hubs – one during the summer and one during the holiday season as gift cards are a great way to invest now and shop when people feel safer.
•
We installed the “Art on the Fence” project to beautify the extended dining fencing for our restaurants that had outdoor dining.
•
And we aimed to motivate and inspire our members to keep moving forward, even when it felt very hard!

We’ve all seen the signs stressing that supporting local businesses is better than supporting Amazon because the global giant doesn’t care to help support local Little League programs or sponsor important community events.
In Golden, Nola Krajewski, executive director of the Golden Chamber of Commerce, said the best way to support local businesses is to take the extra step to purchase locally whenever possible.
But really, the importance of shopping local goes much deeper than many realize. In fact, buying from your local businesses lining the streets of your local community really means a stronger city, county and state economy.
Businesses in Golden are coming off one of the worst years they’ve ever had given all the COVID-19 obstacles presented in 2020.
Spending locally literally means the money stays local. For every $10 spent at a local business, at least $7 stays local. However, through major retailers and corporations like Amazon, the money leaves the local economy.
“We have seen less tourists than normal, which means our business community needs those that call Golden home to step up more than they have before,” she said. “If you love where you live, please consider supporting your community by investing your dollars locally. These business owners are your
neighbors and part of what makes the town you call home so special and unique.” Besides that, supporting local business in Colorado and Golden means supporting the majority. In Colorado, 99.5 percent businesses
are privately owned. Small businesses are the foundation of our local communities. In Colorado, small businesses are responsible for 1.1 million jobs, funding infrastructure, and for supporting important community programs.

Taste of Golden Historic Downtown Golden
For 7 years, the annual Taste of Golden has been organized and hosted by the Golden Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. In 2020, this event had to be cancelled due to the shut down and the struggle that our restaurants faced. And so, in 2020, we did something new! We created a “Taste of Golden” recipe book and dining guide. This is a collection of recipes from many of your favorite restaurants and also of community members, along with a dining guide, helpful cooking tips, and even local history! Get yours today, along with a measuring spoon, for just $15 at the Golden Visitors Center or on our website, GoldenChamber.org. We hope to one day bring the popular Taste of Golden event back to our community but for now, the best way to enjoy all the unique culinary delights in Golden is to dine out and to order take out.

In 2020 we also partnered with VisitGolden to launch “TakeOut TakeOver Golden”. This was in response to the need to support our restaurants, breweries, and distilleries in a way that was safe for our community. Held each summer, the festival is staged along 11th Street between Arapahoe and Maple in beautiful historic downtown Golden, offering wonderful views of North and South Table Mountain, Lookout Mountain and Clear Creek. The high-quality artwork, comfortable atmosphere, and beautiful setting makes our Golden Fine Arts Festival a destination event, attracting over 25,000 people over two days. This art show traditionally brings the works of over 100 artists from all over the United States are featured, including: ceramic arts, fiber arts, glass, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture, and 2D. The event also includes live music, food vendors, beer and wine gardens and community business exhibitors.

Although 2020 marked the 30th Anniversary year of the Golden Fine Arts Festival, the event had to be cancelled. However, art still adorned Golden with a new project of the Chamber of Commerce – “Art on the Fence”. Using digital artwork donated by fine arts festival artists, mesh banners were created to showcase the art while also decorating the fencing that surrounded the outdoor dining areas in Golden. The project, sponsored by MolsonCoors and Credit Union of Colorado, was a win for the artists, the restaurants, and our community.

The event has traditionally been an opportunity for “Beer ‘n Chili” to take center stage near the heart of historic downtown Golden. A “must attend” annual event each fall, the event offers beer and chili tastings, live entertainment, food vendors, corporate exhibitors and silent auction. The silent auction benefits the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Over 2,000 beer and chili enthusiasts traditionally attend each year! The event takes place in Parfet Park, (SE corner of Washington Ave & 10th Street) just adjacent to downtown Golden, Colorado. Event proceeds benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Golden Chamber of Commerce’s Community Projects.

Olde Golden Christmas December 2021
Historic Downtown Golden During the holiday season, Golden really shines! Our town has had a public light display since 1922 when one tree was draped in lights. That first tree was provided by the Golden Fire Department, Golden Kiwanis, and the Golden Chamber of Commerce. That spirit of collaboration that brought Golden its first lighted tree has continued for nearly 100 years! In 2020, the Olde Golden Christmas committee – a partnership of the City of Golden, the Golden Visitors Center, Visit Golden, and a variety of businesses and community organizations led by the Golden Chamber, worked together to bring holiday spirit to the community.

And while many of Golden’s favorite traditions such as the Candlelight Walk and the Holiday Parades could not take place, new and fun activities were introduced that brought joy and invited people to visit Golden for shopping and dining. The committee introduced “Candlelight Nights” and asked our citizens to “Be Merry, Be Bright, Shine Your Golden Light” by placing a small battery-operated candle in the window. All of Golden shone brightly with thousands of holiday lights along the creek and downtown areas. Saturday shoppers and diners were greeted by festive holiday characters, carolers, and enjoyed holiday music thanks to the newly added Strolling Saturdays. Lighted ice sculptures adorned downtown weekly, and many people took part in the Holiday Storybook Stroll treasure hunt throughout all of Golden, utilizing a fun app and learning about holiday traditions from around the world! Olde Golden Christmas is such a special time in our community and we look forward to the return of some of Golden’s favorite holiday traditions, along with new ones, in 2021. Celebrating a Century of Service The past year was a big milestone for the Golden Chamber of Commerce. They celebrated their 100th Anniversary as an organization! And while a big party could not be had, the celebration continued. First, on January 23rd, 2020, the Golden Chamber had a special Ribbon Cutting ceremony. Ribbon Cuttings are often thought of for new businesses, but the Chamber also frequently performs these ceremonies for businesses celebrating a special milestone. It seemed only fitting to have a Ribbon Cutting to celebrate the start of the 100th Anniversary Year. Members of the Golden Chamber, the Board of Directors, the Ambassadors, and many community representatives and supporters joined in to kick off the year by cutting the ribbon at the Golden Visitors Center
(home also to the Golden Chamber). As COVID restrictions were implemented, the initial anniversary celebration plans quickly evolved from big parties to something more socially distant; and The Great Golden Trivia Race became the focal point of the celebration. On September 12th, nearly 100 people gathered in masks to race throughout Golden and collect clues and answer historical trivia as part of a scavenger race on the history of Golden and the Golden business community. It was tremendously fun, incredibly competitive, and a great way to learn new facts about Golden’s history. At the end of the 2.5-hour race, winners were announced and awarded prizes and everyone toasted to the Chamber’s 100th Anniversary.
The Golden Chamber has stood the test of time because of the support of the community. They move into the next century of service
