Welcome to Applewood Business Association’s 2020 Member Directory! It is an honor to serve as President of the Applewood Business Association (ABA). I have many memories of Andrew Coonan Applewood as a child and adolescent, from getting haircuts at Applewood Barbers, running errands with grocery trips to King Soopers and dry-cleaning pickups to Bender’s Cleaners, to being fitted for a tuxedo at Denver Tux for prom. Today, I am making new memories in the Applewood marketplace including enjoying meals with friends and colleagues at Abrusci’s, playing a round of golf at Applewood Golf Course, or attending one of the monthly ABA Business After Hours. As we enter a new decade and
with changes in the community on the horizon how will we define a New Applewood? The Applewood Business Association is working hard to support local businesses and residents alike and grow into the future. The ABA is thriving with our largest membership to date with 200+ members. Applewood Business Association: A history and eye toward the future Applewood Business Association, History The ABA dates back to 1979 when eight business owners at the Applewood Village Shopping Center formed an organization to help promote their businesses and Applewood, an area rich in history divided into three municipalities, Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, and unincorporated Jefferson County. 1983 was the year that Applewood Business Association adopted its name and opened its membership to businesses and professionals in the area. The Association incorporated in 1987 as a not for profit corporation. The purpose of the association was, and is, to promote the entire Applewood Community – its businesses, professionals, and residents. Mission Statement The Applewood Business Association is dedicated to the promotion, expansion, and development of its members by providing services that directly aid, support, and promote their business and by expressing and supporting common goals for the protection, identity, and growth of Applewood businesses and the community. Who We Are The Applewood Business Association is a group of nearly 200 businesses in Applewood, CO. Our goal as an association is to help our member businesses grow and improve. As a result, we work with area chambers of commerce and other business groups to: • Provide networking opportunities • Provide business education • Promote member businesses • Provide advertising opportunities • Engage in Business After Hours events • Host monthly member meetings with engaging speakers, good food, and networking opportunities The ABA is led by an elected, all volunteer Board of Directors and Officers. Our monthly meetings provide educational and informational programs to assist its members in building professional and business good will. The ABA works hard to foster a friendly, welcoming culture in all of its meetings and events for members to meet new people and develop valuable, long term relationships. Community Initiatives ABA Directory The ABA Directory is published in January each year and mailed the first week of February to 25,000 local businesses and households in the Applewood marketplace. It is mailed again in the summer to 3,800 businesses in the Applewood

marketplace. Additionally, copies are distributed throughout the year at our member businesses and at ABA functions and meetings. The Directory is unveiled each year at the ABA Gala (formerly Tux’s & T’s). The Summer issue contains an insert with new members who joined January 1 through June 1. Absolutely Applewood.com AbsoltelyApplewood.com is the ABA’s consumer facing website, designed as a powerful tool to help you drive new customers to your business. The core value of AbsolutelyApplewood. com is to promote ABA members’ special ‘Hot Deals’ to local residents. For local businesses there are three options for advertising on AbsolutelyApplewood beginning at $99/year up to $349/year. Applewood Community Foundation The Applewood Business Association provided charter funding to the Applewood Community Foundation creating a vehicle to provide philanthropic opportunities unique to the Applewood community. ABA Programs and Events The ABA hosts monthly Luncheons on the 2nd Thursday of each month and monthly Breakfasts on 4th Thursday of each month. The ABA also hosts monthly Business After Hours hosted at members’ business locations. Other ABA programs include promoting new business openings through ribbon cutting; and honoring service to our County with an annual Flag Day celebration by hanging flags in Applewood from Flag Day through the Fourth of July.

Jefferson County Business Resource Center If you don’t know the questions, you can’t Google it! Entrepreneurs are passionate about their ideas, products, and services, but don’t always receive the guidance, support, and information they need to achieve success. Navigating the start-up phase and learning the essential steps of launching a business can be a greater challenge than many people anticipate. Sometimes a company will operate for well over a decade, but don’t fully realize the vision or achieve the longterm goals set in their first year. The Jefferson County Business Resource Center is a publicly funded, non-profit organization that is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurial activity and small business growth in Jefferson County. The center provides free and low-cost services for all stages of business development and offers a variety of services that support both start-up and established business owners. Business owners and residents who are considering starting a business are eligible to receive up to six free business coaching sessions each year. The center also offers
monthly business education workshops, with a wide variety of topics, all designed to support businesses with 10 or fewer employees. Launch! Your ticket to small business success is a business success program offered three times a year. Both Launch! and the business education classes are taught by established business owners in Jefferson County, who donate their time and efforts as a way of paying it forward and sharing their expertise and personal experiences. Jeffco BRC is also a resource hub for all things business. The center partners with all area chambers of commerce in Jeffco and the many business organizations, including Applewood Business Association. Lakewood anticipates more economic growth in 2020 Lakewood is a vibrant community that is home to high paying jobs and innovation- a quick drive to mountain amenities, close to the airport and near the region’s educational facilities. Lakewood is home to over 76,000 jobs and nearly 40% of our population has a bachelor’s degree or higher. Our job sector crosses industry and business size, leading to an unemployment rate of under 4%. We are home to an educated workforce with employment options from locally owned enterprises to global headquarters. Lakewood continues to grow our commercial base, working to attract additional job opportunities as well as amenities that increase our quality of life. We have a growing and evolving population, one that spans generations and where Lakewood is home to more millennials than the national average. The new year will bring some
additional tools to the Economic Development team. We will continue to work with partners to promote and enhance the Enterprise Zones and Opportunity Zones in our community. Our commercial incentive programs will be revamped and promoted to our businesses city-wide. These program will be designed to attract the vibrant businesses we want to make Lakewood their home as well as encourage additional investment from our existing businessesgrowing the base and creating visually appealing commercial corridors. Services such as location assistance, demographic and trend data, and development assistance will continue. 2020 will also see the launch of our new Lakewood Local program. This program will highlight all of our locally owned and grown businesses and highlight their impact on the community. Lakewood Local aims to showcase all that our Lakewood businesses have to offer and the power behind frequenting the businesses that

In 2019 and moving into 2020, Wheat Ridge has witnessed growth in commercial and residential developments. “We worked hard in 2019 to backfill the shuttered Walmart, open the Corners at Wheat Ridge, break ground on over 700 residential units, and help improve the aesthetic appearance of
the community,” said Wheat Ridge Economic Development Manager Steve Art. “It’s our commitment to making Wheat Ridge open for business.” City staff and elected officials continue to improve zoning codes, update plans, and create a rapid response process for development projects. Lutheran Medical Center plans expansion
Lutheran Medical Center has been part of the west metro area for more than 100 years. We plan to remain a part of this vibrant community and build a new future right here. SCL Health and Lutheran are moving forward with plans to build a medical campus on 26 acres within the Clear Creek Crossing development. We look forward to supporting this innovative project for the entire community. The planning, design and build out process will be undertaken with thoughtfulness and thorough evaluation of the local health care needs. It will take tremendous planning, preparation and input from the community, our employees, physicians, and healthcare and business partners. The SCL Health Board of Directors will continue to make decisions in stages regarding the property, as we move forward with preliminary design. Decisions on any new facility, including a hospital, have yet to be finalized. The board also will be involved in any decisions related to the future use of the land currently occupied by Lutheran, West Pines Behavioral Health, Lutheran Hospice, and the various other campus buildings. SCL Health and Lutheran have a lot of work to do in the next few years to assess the local and regional healthcare needs, gather input from all stakeholders and determine the final design, uses and timeline. We appreciate the support and input of our local community as we look to continue our mission to improve the health of the people and communities we serve.

In 2019, the Authority partnered with the developer of Clear Creek Crossing for infrastructure work while the City uses portions of its voter approved 2E funds to build new ramps off I-70 easing congestion to the Applewood area. The City and the Authority also worked with the owners of the Applewood Shopping Center for vast improvements to the areas busiest shopping district. And, in 2019 the Authority provided funding for improvements to the Gold’s Market center. These improvements include curbing, gutter and sidewalks around the center, new signage, new HVAC, and complete reconstruction of the parking lot. “We’ve created great partnership with the development community,” continued Art. Applewood Community Foundation The new kid on the block in 2019 was the Applewood Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, established by the Board members of the Applewood Business Association (ABA). Together with residents and local businesses, its vision is to serve and foster a thriving Applewood community. The Foundation is helmed by a volunteer Board of Directors of local business leaders and residents, committed to the success of our beloved greater Applewood area. Much like its logo, the Foundation prides itself in sinking deep roots into the Applewood ground, with a sturdy trunk of communitybased activism. The Foundation relies on strong support from both volunteers and donors. The branches of the Foundation reach broadly, outward and upward, with a multi-layered approach to how it will act as a resource within the community. Ever growing, this tree sprouts new leaves as new ideas of ways we can support Applewood are presented. The Foundation’s mission is to support business and community development in the greater Applewood area, endeavoring to
promote community pride, local leadership, and neighborhood improvement in all aspects of their charitable activities. To that end, the Applewood Community Foundation supported several local community events in 2019 in the form of charitable contributions. Unique Neighborhoods Guest piece by Meg Smith, Applewood Living Magazine Applewood has proven a very unique place to me. I fell in love with Applewood before I had the opportunity to live here. When I first moved to Colorado with my husband, we were living briefly in downtown Golden before purchasing what we thought would be our “forever home” in Genesee. Needless to say this Florida girl did not fare well in the mountains! And lucky for me we were able to move to the Applewood Villages neighborhood in the spring of 2016! My husband grew up here and his Mom is of course a longtime resident of the area. She loves Applewood because it’s not so busy compared to neighborhoods east of us. It’s also close to the main arteries to the mountains and Denver. She loves that King Soopers has always been there. But most importantly she values that the people here are so nice and that, like she, they stay for decades. I can attest to that as I see the present turnover of homes on our street as many of her longtime neighbors relocate.
She is quick to point out that even with that that there are thirty unique neighborhoods turnover, the neighborhood is very much within the Greater Applewood area and the same as when she moved here with that fifteen of them bear “Applewood” in her young family in the early 1970s. Thank their name! I thought how interesting it is goodness for that. that while we have so many independent neighborhoods, we all identify as one My husband, like me, loves that there is community. Edna Miklos, beloved member of the ABA The Applewood Business Association lost a dear friend in 2019. Edna Miklos owned The Hair Place on 20th & Youngfield for over 30 years. One of the charter members of the Applewood Business Association, she loved Applewood and the people in it. Edna served as President, Vice President, and Secretary over the years for the association. She also headed up our Annual Golf Tournament for years, as well as organizing the Flag Day celebration where we fly American Flags between Flag Day and Independence Day every year along Youngfield and 32nd Avenue. As a resident and business owner, Edna had a vested interest in the Applewood Community. She actively participated in many local projects like the Youngfield widening project, Clear Creek Crossing development (formerly known as Cabela’s project) and Save Applewood Golf Course. She was also active in Clear Creek Valley Neighborhood Council. She was our friend and colleague and she knew so many people and what went on in the area – many of us called her “The Unofficial Mayor of Applewood”, and it was so appropriate!
