Revitalizing the vibrant heart of Arvada has paid off for Historic Olde Town Arvada (HOTA), Olde Town’s merchant association, which celebrates 14 Best of the Best wins this year. “It’s great,” said HOTA President Karen Miller. “It shows the broad appeal of Olde Town — not just one or two businesses, but so many businesses are popular here.” Incorporated in 2001, HOTA serves the businesses, residents and customers of Arvada’s historic downtown scene. With winners in Best Wine Bar, Best Singles Spot, Best Ice Cream, and Best Place to Meet People, among many others, the area celebrates the best in entertainment, dining and community. “It’s a friendly, relaxed place — people are meeting everywhere,” Miller said. “They meet at our events, our meeting places, our bars, and just walking down the street.” Annually, HOTA puts on a myriad of special events throughout the area to celebrate the merchants and to invite people to explore the historic area while fostering a deeply connected community in the city.

Ooey Gooey Bakery started as a way to indulge a family’s sweet tooth and help others. Four years later, it has become a booming business.

That’s no easy task. The competition draws about 80 chocolatiers.

Castle Rock residents Matthew and Cheryl Altman and their three children — ages 13, 11 and 5 — run the family sweetery, catering events, delivering and recently adding a food truck to reach new customers.

“A big piece of who we are as a family and business is our relationship with the community and how we give back,” Cheryl said. “We haven’t spent a whole lot on advertising; a lot of it is word of mouth through fundraisers and community events we’re involved in. Every year, business has almost doubled.

But the awards aren’t what make this business tick.

“We originally got started just helping out at church doing dessert with the pastors,” Cheryl said. “The response was so overwhelmingly positive, we just decided to go ahead and do a business.”

“It’s still fun. But it’s definitely more of a business than ‘Hey, let’s play with sugar’.”

The family spent a lot of time “playing around with sugar,” Cheryl said, creating their own cupcakes, cake pops, whoopee pies, frosting, candy and fudge. Experts agree they’ve figured it out. “We’ve won first, second and third place at the Broadmoor (Hotel’s annual) Holiday Chocolate Festival,” she said.

The 1961 ice cream truck Ooey Gooey converted into its food truck last fall has expanded its reach even further. Because it’s a family business, “Our biggest challenge is how to balance,” Cheryl said. “But I love being able to teach my kids customer service and having pride in something they do themselves.” How sweet it is.

Duke’s serves up family atmosphere

Since 1996, the Minarick and Breeding families have been serving up steaks and drinks to hungry patrons in the area at Duke’s Steakhouse. Four years ago, Duke’s moved from its old location just south of Castle Rock to Castle Pines. “The community here has been so supportive, the people are wonderful,” said Mary Breeding, one of the owners. “Our familiar clientele that we had for 14 years in Castle Rock have found there way up here as well, so you put the two together and it’s been a great move.” Along with manager and co-owner Neil Minarick, Duke’s tries to foster a family atmosphere that produces quality service and food. In addition to their dining room, which is open on Sunday for brunch and offers a large fireplace to keep patrons warm in the winter, Duke’s also has its own sports tavern area with TVs and 21 beers on tap. Holly Pool a neighborhood gem

Does watching kids flying off diving boards into a swimming pool make you feel nostalgic? There’s a reason for that, says Jamie DeBartolomeis, spokeswoman for South Suburban Parks and Recreation. Most outdoor pools today are built without them due to liability and cost issues. But SSPR pools have them, which is likely one reason Holly Pool is a favorite in Centennial. “It is a favorite community neighborhood pool,” said DeBartolomeis. “It’s a public pool, but it kind of feels like a private pool for people who live in Cherry Park.” Nestled into the neighborhood, Holly Pool is home to the Holly Park Sharks Swim Team for kids 5 and older. According to the team’s website, it’s committed to developing the technical skills of competitive swimming, strengthening friendships and encouraging all swimmers to strive for their personal best. “The parents are very active,” said DeBartolomeis. “They love their pool, and they love their swim team.” She said attendance numbers are up at outdoor pools throughout the district. Holly Pool has a 12-foot deep end, great for team practice. It also has a very shallow end that starts at 18 inches. About 260 people a day visit for a quick dip, to get in a few laps after work, or to enjoy some fun in the sun. Courtesy photo

“That’s great, because it’s an active sport you can do all your life, and the kids are learning at an early age,” she said. Many of those kids work at the pool as teenagers, whether at the concession stand or even as pool managers. “It’s kind of a nostalgic thing for them,” said DeBartolomeis.

Elizabeth Salon a repeat winner By Sonya Ellingboe Bridget Littlejohn bought the Elizabeth Salon about nine years ago, after three years on its staff, she said. The busy salon is a 2015 “Best of the Best” winner — repeating its 2014 selection as a popular hometown business. And Littlejohn was very much at home with this local business. “I grew up in Elizabeth and graduated from Elizabeth High School,” she said. “I left and came back.” Asked about specialties, she quickly replied, “Hair — we do everything with hair: cutting, coloring, perms, straightening. The salon also does waxing, airbrush, spray tanning.”

Making memories last By Tom Munds Brian Hart, owner of Frame de Art, said the focus is to provide great quality and value as his company works with customers to select how they want their memories framed. The sound of the nail guns echo off the walls of the store that are lined with examples of how the members of the staff uses a variety of sizes, shapes and frames to create a custom frame for each project. There are shadow boxes for military medals and more traditional and classic frames for fine art as well as their sports memorabilia. “When I was in college, I loved art and had walls filled with art and no furniture,” Hart said. “I decided to start my own business because I knew I would never get tired of taking pieces of art and be really creative when I framed them.” Frame de Art moved from a 1,000-square-foot shop near the University of Denver after Hart purchased the 5,000-square-foot building in Englewood. Washing with the best By Christy Steadman Jim Beetham, owner of A Better Carwash, strives to offer customers the best facility and good customer service. “If something doesn’t live up to the word better, call (me) directly,” he said. “I work hard to live up to that part of the name.” A Better Carwash, which offers selfserve or automatic washes, has been operating in Golden for 11 years, and in Arvada for six.

Both locations are busier in the winter, Beetham said, because the industry competes with “garden hoses in the driveway” in the summer. But, he said, it’s important for people to know that it is bad for the environment to do at-home car washes. At a car wash facility, the dirty water

goes through a drain and is first treated onsite, then goes to the city for further treatment before it is released into the rivers. When done at home, the dirty water goes directly into the storm drain, so all the stuff on the car—soap, antifreeze, oil, chemicals—pollute the rivers. People appreciate the high-quality equipment A Better Carwash offers, Beetham said. The automatic machines are the best in the world, he said. They’re German-made, he said, and are the same machines used on Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Rolls-Royce. Creating a family destination with grandma’s recipes By Christy Steadman Although the Durán Family, owners and operators of El Dorado Mexican Restaurant, has consistently won Best of the Best awards since 2011 for best green chili, best burrito and best Mexican food, what they are most proud of this year is winning best family restaurant. “It’s always been our goal to create a family environment,” said Eric Durán. He added his family is close-knit, and now the community of Golden has become a part of their family.

His grandmother taught them to appreciate good food, Durán said, and the restaurant incorporates many of her recipes in the menu. The Durán Family, originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, has been in the restaurant business for more than 20 years, beginning with José Durán who passed his knowledge down to his

two sons, Eric and Sergio. The restaurant opened seven years ago on May 1. High demand prompted them to double the size of the patio for summertime diners two years ago, and now they are looking to do some expansions on the inside to accommodate larger groups and families. Winning awards boosts moral among the staff, Sergio said. Working in the restaurant industry is both challenging and fun, he said, because every day is something new. But the Durán Family strives to keep things consistent for the loyal customers. “Just to keep (up with) that level of appreciation and expectation from the people,” he said, “knowing we’ve won awards in the past.”

Splash Aquatic Park tops in Golden In the summertime, Splash at Fossil Trace is popular among people local to Jefferson County, but people from all over the Denver-metro area are attracted to Golden’s water park.

“Splash is the perfect place for people to cool off on a hot, summer day,” manager Joe Mallory said. And “it’s easily accessible for all of Denver because of the light rail.”

The leisurely pool, the play pool, is kept at about 90 degrees. It is inclined, so children of all ages can enjoy it. It also features the slides, play equipment similar to a jungle gym and a 500-gallon water bucket that tips over when it reaches a certain fill level.

Splash, which opened on June 1, 2002, has won Best of the Best in the past. Its main attraction is probably the waterslides, Mallory said. “The slides are tall enough to be part of an amusement park,” he said. They “set us apart from other outdoor pools.” Splash Aquatic Park had a delayed opening this season because of bad weather, but is now open for people to enjoy until Aug. 23. Whether you need a cozy place for your dog to stay, or you want someone to watch your furry friend in the comfort of your own home while you’re gone, iCare Pet Sitting offers services to keep your pets at ease — and then some. Everybody gets love and play time. Owner and “Alpha dog” Bonnie Cannon, who’s been pet sitting for 27 years, lives in Highlands Ranch near Rock Canyon High School and provides a B & B for animals, including doggie “condos” or play pens for up to six or seven dogs a day and scheduled walks. The pampered pooches have the whole first floor inside and outside her home, including deck space and a yard to watch the sunrise, or furniture inside to climb on, whichever they prefer. In addition, Cannon has four full-time independent pet consultants, some of

which are vet technicians, who will watch, walk and feed your pets, at your own home. Cannon and at least two of her consultants have experience with farm animals and are also willing to milk cows or tend to goats and donkeys if needed. The “very understanding” owner makes sure pets as comfortable as they can be while away from their owners, even if it means accommodating to handicaps and medication routines. She charges a higher rate for 24-hour care, but keeps pets for $35 a day and night, if they’re picked up before 9 a.m. the following day. After a life of accounting, Cannon, who has run iCare for more than two years, said the main reason she got into pet sitting is because she much prefers dealing with the wagging of tails, rather than the wagging of tongues.

All About Kids shares an office with All About Kids Dental offices, which makes it a one-place stop for children’s health needs, said Roxana Campos, office manager with the vision center. “We mostly see toddlers through teenagers, but we do cater to all ages” she said. “Our convenient location makes it really easy for us to offer all these services in one place.” All About Kids offers wide variety of frames that cater to all ages and sizes, and accepts Medicaid, CHP+, Tricare, and VSP, among others. There are promotional prices available for uninsured and underinsured patients. The doctors are able to address most eye care needs, as well as help patients with contacts and glasses. Community college investing in the community By Clarke Reader Keeping a community college running is no easy task, especially when that college is one of the most up and coming colleges in the state, but the Red Rocks Community College Foundation works hard every day to provide the college and its students with the best opportunities possible. “These are exciting times for Red Rocks,” said Ron Slinger, executive director of the foundation. “We’re tripling the size of our Arvada Campus, starting to offer a bachelor’s degree in water quality, and the college received the Genesis Award for economic development.” Red Rocks is extremely invested in working with the community, and Slinger credits this recognition to the fact that so many groups and organizations work with the college. The foundation has three areas of focus – providing scholarships to students, supporting the college’s programs and helping with the capital needs of the school.

Waldron and his wife, Susan, opened the shop seven years ago after having both spent much of their careers in the world of big franchises. “It was a chance to do what we were trained and skilled in for ourselves,” he said. It’s that mom-and-pop attitude he thinks keeps his customers coming back. Everyone who walks in the door is greeted like family, and the shop always full of banter and chitchat. “It’s a load of fun around here,” he said. “They enjoy coming here. Isn’t that a bizarre statement? I mean, who likes getting their car worked on?”

Bluffs Regional Park offers workout, wildlife Lone Tree’s Bluffs Regional Park offers a wide, soft-surface, 3-mile loop trail that cuts through the 253-acre park. It is growing in popularity, but because it is tucked-away behind the Super Target, it’s still something of a hidden gem. The trail’s width makes it easy for walkers to travel side by side and chat while still getting a good workout. And the rolling terrain provides a great cardio ride for mountain bikers. Because it’s virtually treeless, snow melts quickly, keeping it passable yearround.

The Bluffs is a delightful spot for wildlife watching. Deer, birds of prey and coyotes all call the area home.

For those who want to venture outside the loop, the options are vast. The EastWest Regional and Willow Creek trails branch off from Bluffs Regional Trail. The East-West extends for 20 miles and the Willow Creek ties eventually into the Highline Canal Trail, which means the only limit on your hike or bike ride is your schedule and your stamina.

And the views are well worth the lung strain it takes to reach the top. At various points, downtown Denver, Parker, Pikes Peak, Mount Evans and Longs Peak all are

Gym offers personal training feel at group price By Ashley Reimers When David Mura opened Fit Soldiers Fitness Revolution five years ago, he was taking a leap of faith. He started from the bottom, with very little cash flow. But with determination and grit, he continued to grow his business to eventually be named the best weight loss and workout center for 2015. “By winning it re-confirms why we are here and what we’re doing,” Mura said. “Our calling is to help people get healthier, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Mura and the trainers at Fit Soldiers focus on taking group fitness and making it look and feel like personal training. The trainers spend specific time and attention on each person helping them to progress as needed. And because it’s a group setting, Mura said he’s able to lower the

price. “We’re constantly progressing and modifying based on the individual,” he said. “It feels like personal training, but because we’re in a group, people are paying less.” Another focus at Fit Soldiers is the mental and emotional side of fitness and weight loss. Mura takes the time to connect with his clients to learn the real reason why he or she is trying to lose weight. He said usually it ends up being more than just the desire to look good in a bathing suit--it’s about their quality of life. “We make sure people have the real reason for getting in shape at the front of their minds,” he said. “We want to be a support system for people and be there along their journey of getting healthy.”

Anthony’s II in Thornton is serving up much more than just hand-tossed pizza. The family-owned business also offers pastas, calzones, sub sandwiches and wings. “What’s really unique is the fact that our entire menu is also available for delivery,” said owner Antonio Celeste. “Even if it’s our chicken parmesan, we’ll deliver it to your doorstep.” Since 1997, Anthony’s II has been producing made-from-scratch Italian fare. Whether it’s the marinara sauce or the pizza dough, customers can expect fresh food made daily. “You can buy a pizza for $5 almost anywhere, but it’s going to taste like a $5 pizza,” Celeste said. “We focus on using fresh ingredients and making everything from scratch.” Anthony’s II also has a dedicated customer base. Celeste said there are some die-hard fans who compare his pizza to being as good as the pizza on the east coast. Other customers tell him Anthony’s II pizza is the only kind there kids will eat. “You think every kid would love every kind of pizza, but some don’t,” Celeste said. “I have to give all the credit to our success to the loyalty of the customers. It means a lot.”

Every motorist knows it can be difficult to find a reliable, trustworthy mechanic. So when an auto repair shop is voted Best of the Best for customer service, it’s worth taking note.

Advantage Auto, which opened in 2004 and has been in its existing location since 2007, also has an open-door policy that enables customers to bring in a third party to review the proposed repair.

Sondra and Frank Sertic, the owners of Advantage Auto Repair, 18700 S. Longs Way, take immense pride in the long list of loyal customers who come through the doors. Repeat business and frequent referrals indicate that people are not only happy with the work, but satisfied with how Advantage Auto approaches each repair.

Despite the demand for a quality repair shop, the Sertics have no plans to expand their footprint.

“You can see your car being worked on and Frank likes to do a show-and-tell scenario to make them feel completely comfortable (before a repair is made),” said Sondra Sertic, who runs the business side of things. “He’s not just a business owner and the face up front. He actually oversees all the work in the back and even performs some of the more complicated jobs himself.”

Saying goodbye with grace

Providing comfort during a period of grieving takes a special kind of person, someone with a delicate touch and a sympathetic ear. Overseeing a final farewell is one of the most important jobs there is, which is why Ponderosa Valley Funeral Services owners Steve and Nanci Trevino take their responsibilities so seriously. Every passing is different and every family has a different idea of how to say goodbye. A gentle, compassionate approach to funeral planning is key, as is flexibility.

Vet clinic crafting a lasting legacy The motto of the Legacy Veterinary Clinic is “The next generation of vet care.” The staff there seems to be living up to those words too, as Westminster voters prefered Legacy the most, out of a field of 11 different clinic entries in the 2015 Best of the Best contest. The clinic was founded by Dr. Kaveh Sarhangpour more than four years ago. He said that from the start, the clinic aimed to lift the bar on pet medical care, and customer service. “Everything is based on quality care, and conscientious care,” Sarhangpour said.

The clinic prides itself on being sustainable — doing things like having a nearly paperless office, and using low-volatile organic compound paint — as well as making a statement about the holistic wellness of patients, their human owners, and even the staff.

By Glenn Wallace “Everything is interrelated,” Sarhangpour says when asked why such things are important. The clinic offers a range of services, including dental work, and specialty surgeries. “We have virtually every service, Sarhangpour said. “Ninety-nine percent of the time they won’t have to go anywhere else.” Many of the dogs and cats seen at the clinic are older, and have a host of problems. Sarhangpour said the clinic has a specific “Restore program” designed to help these ailing animals feel better by doing things like weaning them off of unnecessary medication, and rehabilitating old problems. Sarhangpour said his talented staff strives to offer a better level of care because the goal is to help that furry family member get to a better quality of life.

Belly ﬂop contest makes a splash By Ashley Reimers Every year Water World in Federal Heights hosts the annual Belly Flop Splashdown. The contest challenges college students to risk their bellies in the name of scholarships and laptops. The water park partners with Colleges in Colorado to offer the fun event and this year will mark the 19th year. The floppers are judged on height, splash and creativity. Often students will paint their bellies in bright colors or wear costumes. “The Belly Flop contest has been carried on television networks across the country from the Today Show to ESPN,” said Water World spokesperson Joann Cortez. “The air between the flopper and the water gives you a sense of anticipation that, no matter how hard you try, you can’t tear your eyes away from it.” A midair pose, moments before impact at the 2014 Belly Flop competition. Little spa wins big By Glenn Wallace To read the list of spa services offered at The Pampering Place Day Spa is to imagine a large building filled with a small army of beauticians to accommodate the massages, facials, nails, waxing, airbrush tanning, a steam shower, therapeutic soaks, as well as a gift shop. All those services helped motivate Pampered Place customers to vote for the business as the 2015 Best of the Best in multiple categories. But in truth, all those happy customers, and all those services, are all handled by the aptly-named Terri Work, and her homebased business.

Work is a 5th generation native Coloradoan who took her massage and manicure skills and her idyllic Wheat Ridge house and built a thriving spa business over the last nine years. She says the secret to her success has been

a lot of hard work, and focusing intently on her clients. “It’s not the quantity of people I can get in the door. I want each client to feel like they’re the only one,” Work said. Indeed, with only one employee, The Pampered Place can only have one customer at a time. Work said her regular clientele has already booked their visits through the end of the year, to ensure they can get in. The huge range of services helped establish The Pampering Place’s legitimacy beyond what the public perception of a home-based business might be, according to Work. “My favorite is the massage, facial combination,” she says, because it gives the body time to relax and enjoy the experience. “It just kind of feels decadent.”
