Class of 2011

Colorado Academy

Our Graduates - Class of 2011

The Class of 2011 is made up of 86 seniors ; all continuing their educational pursuits at four-year colleges and universities across the globe from Lugano, Switzerland to San Antonio, Texas, and spanning the nation from Tacoma, Washington to Waterville, Maine.

This class is punctuated by the academic, artistic, engineering, and entrepreneurial talents of its members, as well as by their physical and athletic endeavors. They have been honored and recruited for sports from lacrosse to skating, for their passion for service and commitment to human rights, and for their gifts of artistry. They have been recognized for their ability to express themselves on stage and through the written and spoken word.

Among these students are three Daniels Scholars, several playwrights at Denver’s Curious Theatre, top winners in drama and writing competitions, and winners of the regional Mock Trial Competition. CA’s class of 2011 includes members of the All-State Choir, editors of CA’s award-winning Kokopelli literary magazine, portfolio artists, photographers, and students of languages ranging from Spanish to Swahili.

Collectively, this group has served nearly 50 nonprofit organizations with more than two-thousand hours of community service, including a record-breaking Students HOPE event on CA’s campus.

These students are witnesses to change; they are resilient, adaptable, and cognizant of what they have. In preparing this Senior Journal, many wrote of their gratitude for the opportunity to attend CA, to find their passions, to participate, to have teachers who pushed them, and who cared a great deal.

“The teachers at CA have changed my life. Words cannot express my gratitude for what they have given me. Thank you to all my teachers: you truly have the most important job in the world.” “CA taught me so many wonderful things, but I think the thing I will use most is how I was taught to learn. CA teachers taught us to research, to think outside the box, and in different, strange ways and be independently savvy. I am very thankful for that.” “I don’t think I will ever forget the community that is here. I’ve become the person I am with the students with whom I will graduate, and it’s hard to imagine what my life will be like without them. All the faculty and staff here help make this community, and I know too well that there are few places like Colorado Academy.”

Maya Nicole Aggen

At CA since Ninth Grade, will attend Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee

My favorite CA memory is my first Homecoming Dance in Kassler. It was the first time I really bonded with my entire class, and I just love dancing my heart out.

My favorite tradition has to be the fall concert. It might be the most informal choir concert but we get to sing the best songs.

What would you most like to be remembered for at CA? I would love to be remembered as a person who loved life, made everyone feel like he or she had a friend, and spoke with honesty and conviction. And of course — as a fashion icon!

Phillip Maxwell Allen

At CA since Pre-Kindergarten, will attend Chapman University in Orange, California

My favorite CA memory is my time with the CA Lacrosse Program. From “Miss Understood Beardmore” to the amazing coaching of Lance Savage, Dan Pratt, Brel McCoy, and JC Pritchard. They made me love the sport even more by showing that you can have fun but still be the best. I will always remember beating Kent, and going on the Spring Break trips with the “Brotherhood.”

My favorite tradition was making cinnamon bread in the MAC class every Friday, and eating it on the bus before I could get it to my parents. What would you most like to be remembered for at CA? I want to be remembered as someone who can make you laugh, but also be serious when the time calls for it, as someone who works hard, but is able to still have fun, and as someone who loved all of his friends and will miss them all.

Trevor Paul Anderson

At CA since Sixth Grade, will attend Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas

My favorite CA memory is of hanging out with Kiel Hogan.

Favorite CA Tradition: I love the alumni vs. senior vs. teachers vs. parents race on Giant Relay day. What would you most like to be remembered for at CA? I would like to be remembered as a kid who didn’t take life too seriously.

Brenna Alexandra Baker

At CA since Ninth Grade, will attend Mills College in Oakland, California

My favorite CA memory is of running sound for the Student One Act plays. When else can you see the same show five times in one week, and still find it hilarious?

What would you most like to be remembered for at CA? I would like to be remembered for my commitment to working for my beliefs.

William Cody Behan

At CA since Fifth Grade, will attend Stanford University in Palo Alto, California

My favorite CA memory is the spring musical every year. It’s a real bonding experience when we come together to make something great. (And get yelled at occasionally...)

Favorite CA Tradition: CA to Go. We need our coffee and muffins to make it through long blocks.

What would you most like to be remembered for at CA? I would like to be remembered as a varsity tennis player, a performer, a Mock Trial witness, an academic, and being a part of something so much bigger.

Jonathan Roberts Bentley

At CA since Ninth Grade, will attend Stanford University in Palo Alto, California

My favorite CA memories are of all the times I came in to Mr. T’s classroom to talk about everything from Bacon’s Rebellion to my college decision. I will always remember our chats.

One of our captains told us before the game that we represented something much bigger than ourselves; that we represented CA. Scoring from midfield with two minutes left was awesome, too.

Favorite CA Memory: Senior year had a lot of highs and lows. It was the year that I really think I found myself. After my buddy Craig died, I came to the conclusion that life is too short not to be happy and do what you want. I’ve always wanted to make music, so Avvery and I started doing that; I started pursuing my passion for design and was able to complete a bench with Javier in Operations. This year, I’ve really found out who it is I want to be.

Favorite CA Tradition: Giant Relay Day. The Class of 2011 has annihilated the competition for the past two years and set a course record.

What would you most like to be remembered for at CA? I would like to be remembered for doing my thing. I never really cared what everyone else was doing. When I wanted to do something, I did it. I didn’t get caught up in stressing over every single test and grade or take the most AP classes. I did this while still being a nice, respectful, decent guy.

They were always fun nights, and they each had their own unique flavor to them, because there were always different acts. It’s fun to see how creative and outrageous your friends are.

My favorite CA tradition has to be Homecoming, because it always felt like a week-long affair. Everybody gets revved up for it the week before the actual Homecoming Day, with Spirit Week and whatnot. And then you get to top it all off with a dance, which as I experienced it, was always in a different location.

Favorite CA Memory: I’d have to say my favorite CA memory was getting up in front of the entire Upper School with Paige to give our acceptance speech for the Presidencies. I wore a bright pink hat and a wrestling onesie. We went to a thrift store to find the most ridiculous outfits possible and made complete fools of ourselves to ensure that our peers enjoyed the speech and looked forward to our approaching senior year. We were obnoxious, but it was excellent.

My favorite CA tradition is Giant Relay Day. Every year we all look forward to seeing who is going to be the fastest; no matter if it’s in the Sixth Grade or up to the final relay among Seniors, Faculty, Alumni, and Parents. It’s a great day to end every year and have time to sit back and reflect with friends and family. I haven’t missed it in 12 years here at CA. I was the Co-President of the student body this year alongside an incredible friend of mine, Paige Maney. CA has been such a big part of my life that it’s impossible to pick just one memory. My favorite CA tradition is when Mr. T started off every Tuesday with “my wife made...” and then described the best ever dessert that she made the night before. It was awesome to see that not only did our teachers care, but even their wives cared about us too!
