Coming into Malibu from Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Topanga, you’ll run into one of the most storied surfriders in Malibu — former mayor Zuma Jay at his surf shop on PCH across from Carbon Beach near Malibu Pier.

Zuma Jay Surfboards holds the distinction of being Malibu’s longest-standing surf shop, fully stocked with top-of-the-line surf gear.

Zuma Jays is a genuine hub for surf enthusiasts, specializing in surfboards, wetsuits, kayaks, and related accessories, as well as clothing from board shorts to hoodies from top surf brands. With a rich history that spans 30 years, Zuma Jays is Malibu’s oldest surf shop and prides itself on a family-oriented approach in its operations.

Speaking of Zuma, when you head over to Zuma Beach, you will find a new spot where you can get a board and a brew. Opened in 2022, Sea N’ Soul Surf offers surf rentals, beachwear, and fresh lattes and mochas. Founded by John and Erica Koslowski with partner and local surf aficionado David Olan, Sea N’ Soul Surf offers a variety of goods directly across from Zuma Beach. Shop and rent surfboards, wetsuits, e-foils, electric bikes, boardshorts and swimsuits, hats, and everything else you need for an adventurous or relaxing day at Malibu beaches. Call ahead to schedule lessons for the family to elevate your surf game. Shop the wide selection of clothing for men, women, and kids from the shop’s name brand or options from Kerri Rosenthal, Ralph Lauren, Faherty, and Katin.

At the far western end of Zuma, you can pack your ice chest at Vintage Grocers and pop next door to Drill Surf & Skate to top off on your way to the sand. Rent your soft top surfboard, fishtail, or 6’6” surfboard, as well as body boards and all the accessories needed for a day in the waves. Lessons are also available at Drill, with advanced booking. If the weather fooled you, Drill has the clothing to fit the mood, from shorts to pants to sweatshirts.

Among these three shops, you can find anything you need to enjoy the day. No matter which beach you decide to visit, though, be sure to take into consideration safety precautions and surfing etiquette before hitting the water along the 21-miles of sandy paradise that is Malibu.
