First-ever San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Rodeo

Let’s return to those thrilling days of yesteryear. When every sheriff portrayed in the movies had a tin badge, wore a 10-gallon hat, and rode a trusty steed. I think that’s the image people have when they think of a sheriff back in the days of the wild west. Well, for one day in May, those images are coming back to life. I’m pleased to announce the first-ever San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Rodeo.

I’ve had this idea for a number of years now. I’ve seen it done with other sheriffs in other counties in California. And since I have horses of my own, I thought it would be a natural extension to bring the excitement of the rodeo and the cowboy way of life here. Now I don’t have to tell you, San Luis Obispo County has a rich tradition of western living, of horses and cattle, of ropin’ and ridin’. Hopefully, this rodeo will add to that experience.

Let me tell you a little bit about this event. First things first. The Sheriff’s Rodeo will be held May 14 at the Paso Robles Event Center Main Arena. The start time is 5:30 p.m. It’s a modified country rodeo format. Contestants will compete in qualifying events, and the top contestants/teams will compete in the Sheriff’s Rodeo main grandstand performance. Events will consist of team roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, breakaway, sort and rope, and team sorting. It’s a family-friendly event designed to celebrate the western way of life, the support of rodeo, the support of law enforcement, and as a way to give back to our community. Scholarships will be awarded to local students on behalf of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Rodeo committee. And then, as if that’s not enough, after the rodeo, Nashville recording country duo Joe and Martina will entertain the crowd with a live concert. All proceeds from this event go to the nonprofit Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation, which supports law enforcement agencies around the county. appreciation, the Sheriff’s Rodeo is free for all local law enforcement personnel. I am truly excited for this event. I often feel there aren’t enough events in our county that bring the whole family together. That’s what we try to do with our Sheriff’s Family Day that is traditionally held in September at the Madonna Meadows. Or Law Enforcement Night at Farmer’s Market in San Luis Obispo, which is held in May. Both events are made for the public to get an up close look at local law enforcement agencies. So, I’m hoping this rodeo will add to those events with a day filled with family fun and memories.
