Best of 2023

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Best of North SLO County, we want to take a moment to reflect on the journey that brought us here. When we adopted the local newspapers in September 2019, we knew that we wanted to highlight the Best of North SLO County in a way that would showcase the incredible businesses and people that make our community so special. And so, we started adding a special issue each year in March 2019 to recognize the winners from our readers' poll.

Being that it is the 10th anniversary, we wanted to make this issue even more special and memorable. We wanted to showcase all the winners in a way that would give them the recognition they deserve for their hard work and dedication to our community. We hope that you will take the time to appreciate all the incredible businesses and individuals who have made it to the top of the list this year.

However, we also want to acknowledge that the last three years have been extremely challenging for everyone, and every business in our community deserves recognition for the truly heroic feat they all endured to make it to where we are today. Despite the obstacles that have come our way, our community has remained resilient, and we are so proud to be a part of it.

We are thrilled that this year's Best of North SLO County issue is not only special in content, but also in format. As you can see we have put together a 68-page perfect bound book filled with the winners of our readers' poll. This book is mailed out to every home and business in the North County, so you can have easy access to the results and keep them for years to come.

We hope that you find inspiration as you go through the list of winners. Each of these businesses and individuals have worked incredibly hard to earn their spot, and we are so proud to showcase them in this special issue. It is because of the support of you, our community that these businesses are able to thrive, and we are honored to be a part of this celebration.

We want to take this opportunity to thank you, the readers, for your continued support and for truly being the Best of North SLO County Your votes and enthusiasm have made this issue possible, and we are grateful for your involvement in our community.

As you peruse through the pages of this special edition, we hope that you will take a moment to reflect on the incredible impact that each of these businesses and individuals have had on our community. We are so fortunate to have such a supportive and inspiring community, and we look forward to many more years of celebrating the Best of North SLO County together.

We hope you enjoy this special editon of Atascadero News Magazine.

Derma E All-Natural Skincare

Did you know that your skin is your largest (and thinnest) organ? As your skin is highly permeable, what you apply to your skin accesses your bloodstream (and the rest of your body). Although the supplement industry is regulated through the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act, the cosmetics industry is largely unregulated. The Environmental Working Group estimates that 99 percent of the skin care products on the market contain one or more ingredients that have never been evaluated for safety. The amount of chemicals that you place on your skin and ultimately get absorbed into your body is not only disturbing but can disrupt your delicate hormonal balance. There is a better way to have beautiful and healthy skin.

Derma E is the 2nd largest skin care company in the US with an amazing line of products that are 100% vegan, GMO-free, cruelty-free, and eco-ethical. They believe in providing quality formulas with only safe, natural ingredients and recyclable packaging to give you great skin without harming your well-being or the planet.

Harmful ingredients (found in most skin care products) such as parabens, mineral oil, sodium laurel sulfate, acrylamide, propylene glycol, dioxane, and toluene will never be found in Derma E.

One of our favorite Derma E products is Microdermabrasion Scrub. This fine textured crystal blend buffs away dullness and smooths fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars for a healthier, more youthful appearance. Follow that with either Radiant Glow Face Oil or Anti-Wrinkle Treatment Oil. These beautiful oils absorb quickly to soften and nourish dry skin for a natural glow. There’s also an amazing, tinted sun protection facial powder from Derma E with SPF 30 for easy brush and go sun protection. Derma E’s product line includes anti-acne, hydrating, Vit C, anti-wrinkle, skin restore, and firm + lift categories. In addition to skin care, we also carry Derma E’s hair care and sunscreens, which are customer favorites.

Ask a team-member for more Derma E skin and body care recommendations.

Growing Up Together

to help with his sensitive skin. Hers was a business grounded in care from the beginning, and we loved that, and how Jeriel would come visit us in our tiny office with a new batch of scents that we’d evaluate while taking turns holding her sweet baby girl.

Seeing how she and co-owner Bobbie have thoughtfully, intentionally grown and shaped their offerings has been an inspiration.

As Jeriel explains, “I wanted to make a company people could have faith in, one that reflected my own (sometimes impossible) standards.”

We are two months away from our ten-year anniversary, and it’s encouraged a lot of happy reflection among the team at General Store PR. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long since we opened our doors. Just this past year we pulled up floors we laid a decade ago after some water damage, and found a note we’d written to ourselves on the subfloor in Sharpie. We’re sentimental like that.

What really gets us feeling sappy is listing all the makers who have worked with us since the early days, seeing how much their businesses have grown and how all of our lives have expanded and evolved. FableRune is just that kind of partner for us. When we first met Jeriel, co-owner of the natural skincare line, we loved her light and sophisticated scents, and the story of how she started making soap for her husband (an incredible breadmaker and chef)

Pulling up to their Los Osos facility a few days ago, we loaded our truck with boxes and boxes of sweet smelling Fig & Whetstone candles, Salted Grapefruit lotions, and Rose & Amaranth bar soaps. Their workshop felt equal parts production facility and spa retreat, orderly and calm, plants trailing down above rows and rows of freshly poured candles. We pulled away with a car that smelled faintly of orange blossom and a slight feeling of awe at how far we’ve all come on this business and life road together.

Next time you come see us, just try their Be Well Balm. Or that Sicilian Orange Blossom Lotion. They are really special. And yes we know we’re biased, because they are made by our friends, and that’s why we love having a store. Getting to share these things we love with you, our neighbors.

Thank you for supporting all of our women-owned small businesses. Be well!

It's that time of the year again; The Shop Local Bonus program is back for the third year. Supporting our community and economy by shopping locally makes a big difference, which is why we created this program to reward shoppers, like you, for shopping locally. For every $100 you spend at Atascadero restaurants, retailers, personal service shops, and more, you can earn a $20 gift card. It's a great way to show some love to our community and give back while also being rewarded.

Here's how it all works. First, you'll want to start saving your receipts from local Atascadero businesses. (This excludes grocery stores, hardware stores, fast food stops, big box stores, and gas stations.) The receipts must be readable, itemized, dated, and have the business name on them. Once you collect local receipts that show you've spent a total of $100 (not including taxes or fees), redeem them online before March 31 at atascaderochamber.org/shop-local-bonus/. After

you've submitted them, you can pick an available local gift card for $20. Gift cards to participating businesses may run out, so you'll want to start shopping soon to claim your gift cards. You can earn up to two free gift cards per household.

Last year, the Shop Local Bonus Program infused about $30,000 into our local economy. This year we hope to exceed that amount. We have a fantastic business community that has been incredibly supportive of the Chamber and the folks in our community. Local businesses hire local workers, support local families, donate to local youth programs, and support local nonprofits. Now's our chance to give back and support them. As the Chamber, our goal is to lead the way in creating initiatives and programs that support local businesses and entrepreneurs. We hope you'll join us in supporting and shopping locally.

eric peterson, NCRG 8135 El Camino Real

Best Community Involvement by Business Owner

The community has voted, and they nearly all agreed that Eric Peterson should be the winner of the Best Community Involvement Award in our 2023 Best Of.

When learning what the community thought of him, Eric said, "This means the world to me. I was born and raised in Atascadero and have lived in Templeton and Paso, and I love being a part of this community."

Growing up in Atascadero, Eric is the owner of the North County Restaurant Group (NCRG). He got his start in the restaurant business at an early age, washing dishes and busing tables at his grandmother Bonnie Peterson's restaurants — Country Touch Cafe, Touch of Paso Cafe, and Touch of Mexico.

Under his NCRG umbrella, Eric owns family- and community-favorite restaurants, including Jack's Bar and Grill, Street Side Ale House, Guest House Grill, Country Touch Cafes, Kitchenette Coffee and Brunch, Ciello Ristorante and Rooftop Bar — and coming soon, Barley and Boar.

"The community has done so much for me my whole life growing up here as a kid to supporting my businesses as an adult," says Eric, who opened his first restaurant in Atascadero as a senior project while attending Cal Poly. "it is a real privilege that I am now in a position to give back."

As someone who got his start with the help of the community, Eric is proud to be able to give back to the community he loves so much.

With NCRG, Eric enjoys giving back to local sports, including Little League and soccer teams. The group has fed high school football teams, hosted events for the Lighthouse Foundation, and donated to its events along with other local nonprofits.

In Atascadero, Eric's restaurants sponsor many city events like the Tamale Festival, Winter Wonderland, and Cruise Night, just to name a few. When it comes to auctions and fundraisers, the NCRG restaurants are always happy to make donations.

"I really appreciate this acknowledgment," says Eric. "It means a lot, and I look forward to helping the community as much as I can in the future as well as we continue to grow."

north county’s favorite tattoo studio two years running

Not only is Pioneer Tattoo Company the North County’s winner for best tattoo studio two years in a row, it's also the first tattoo studio to ever land in Paso Robles.

Pioneer Tattoo Company burst onto the scene on the first day of December 2021, just slightly over a month after the owners got the green light from the City of Paso Robles to open up shop.

“I’ve been in the works, trying to get a [tattoo] studio in the town of Paso for over five or six years. It was really hard,” stated Pioneer Tattoo Company’s owner, founder, and tattoo artist, Dylan Richter.

Dylan and his high school sweetheart, wife, and co-owner Alexa, who hail from Detroit, Michigan, moved to Paso in late 2015 after a short stint living in San Luis Obispo with their two kids, a daughter who’s a freshman at Paso Robles High and a son who’s in the fourth grade. “There’s no culture shock in North County being from the Midwest," Dylan said. "For me, it feels so much like home. For me, it’s so raw; it’s super blue-collar, people are very hard-working, they understand the concept of what it means to be a hard worker.”

Dylan, whose tattoo-iversary is August 4, got his start tattooing in 2013. Before he decided to take up his tattoo machine and create art on people’s bodies, Dylan was the lead vocalist of the Michigan metalcore

band For the Fallen Dreams from 2008-2013. During COVID, he started a new heavy rock project with longtime friend Jason Spencer called Lost For Life. They hit almost a million streams on Spotify in 2020 and are now playing on Sirius XM Octane.

“I’ve toured all around the world. I got two records on the Top 200 Billboard charts. I was on a major label with Twisted Sister and Foreigner and all those people,” stated Dylan. “I toured for about 10 years, and when I got done, I didn’t know what I was going to do being covered in tattoos, so I started to do graphic design.”

However, graphic design wasn’t cutting it as a career, and while chatting with a fan of For the Fallen Dreams, he discovered that the fan’s wife managed a tattoo shop in Detroit. Thus began his tattoo apprenticeship. “It sounds funny because our grandparents always talk about how they walked to school in the snow uphill both ways, but my apprenticeship was me driving 90 miles to work and 90 miles home, five days a week, and I did it in the snow. And some days, it would take me three hours to get home. It was brutal. I did that for nine months,” Dylan said with a laugh.

After finishing up his apprenticeship, Dylan did a stint tattooing on the Vans Warped Tour Festival for three years in a row, and it was at the end of that he and his family moved out to California.

It sounds funny because our grandparents always talk about how they walked to school in the snow uphill both ways, but my apprenticeship was me driving 90 miles to work and 90 miles home, five days a week, and I did it in the snow.

“We moved out to California, which was kind of random," he said. "We came for a funeral, and my wife never went home. I went home and packed up our stuff, and we moved out to California, and now we’re here.”

Dylan’s tattoo journey on the Central Coast has included working in both the South and North counties. He got his first gig at Traditional Tattoo in SLO and worked there for three and a half years before opening White Moth Tattoo Company in Atascadero in 2018, the whole time holding on to his dream of opening the first tattoo studio in Paso.

“I felt like I really wanted to open a studio in Paso, and everyone pretty much told me that it was impossible to do,” Dylan added. He had White Moth for three years before selling his share of the company to his business partner. He then opened a private tattoo studio in SLO on Court Street.

“I had that while I was waiting for this, and I finally got the go-ahead on this, and I was able to open up,” he continued.

The official email from the City of Paso Robles landed in Dylan’s inbox on October 28, 2021. Though zoning for a tattoo shop was very limited, he started looking for property the next day. By October 30, just two days after that glorious email, he landed the spot where Pioneer Tattoo Company now stands.

“The whole time I had White Moth and I had my private studio in SLO, I was waiting. So when I was able to go, I was like, ‘well, I’m gonna get the spot,'” stated Dylan about diving into finding a home for his studio.

Reflecting on the challenges of opening Pioneer Tattoo Company in 2021, co-owners Dylan and Alexa Richter take a moment to catch their breath and admire their hard work paying off.

Pioneer Tattoo Company’s second tattoo artist, Bran Gomes, isn’t originally a local himself but has family roots in the North County. His family lives out at Lake Nacimiento and also owns a ranch in Bradley. Coming from Fremont, California, in the Bay Area, Bran made the move here to tattoo alongside Dylan and even stayed with Dylan and Alexa before settling on a ranch in Creston.

Paso Robles has prohibited tattoo parlors since 1994, mainly due to The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) not regulating disease and health regulations where tattooing was involved.

“I think there’s still a lot of people that the taboo is not completely gone [for], but I would say that it is respected in the sense where 20 years ago, if you talked to someone about tattoos, that same person would say something completely different about tattoos than they do now. Solely based on the fact that their kids have tattoos now, their grandkids have tattoos now,” added Dylan. He went on to say that there are people in the community that have come in to get their first tattoos solely to support having a tattoo shop in Paso Robles. But tattooing isn’t the only thing the Richter family brings to Paso Robles. Dylan is also involved with multiple well-established Paso institutions, including being one of the youngest officers in the Paso Elks Lodge and being the assistant wrestling coach at Paso High.

“Paso’s home, honestly," he said. "Being involved in the community. Being an officer at the Elks here is super huge in my life. Being the assistant high school wrestling coach here is really big.”

Best Solar Company

For almost 50 years, Solarponics has been helping San Luis Obispo County go solar while also adding their own light to the community through volunteer work. The solar company, which started in 1975, has been busy installing solar into the local community’s homes, and just installed the 20,000th solar energy system in San Luis Obispo County. They don’t expect it to slow down anytime soon due to the new NEM3 rate plan coming to California on April 14.

The NEM3 (net energy metering) rate plan is a brand-new billing structure that will enable utilities to reduce homeowner export rates of extra power generated by solar power. Currently, under the NEM2 rate plan, solar customers are compensated at a slightly lower retail rate for the energy they sell to the grid. Under NEM3, any excess energy sent back to the grid will only be compensated at slightly over wholesale, which is a 70 percent loss of savings after April 14. Customers of PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E will all be affected, that is unless those customers apply for solar before April 14.

“We’re telling people if you’ve ever considered solar, and you haven’t done it yet, don’t wait any longer. We’re trying to tell people that,” said Solarponics Marketing and Sustainability Director Frank Scotti. “Submit your PG&E application now, and then you’ll have up to three years to actually complete your permission to operate, which is the final stage of the project.”

Frank emphasized that the submittal of the application for solar is the important date, not the project completion date. He said Solarponics is planning on having a large backlog of incoming clients as well as a lot of applications for installing solar coming in before the April 14 deadline. After April 14, people going solar will be able to keep their solar energy savings as long as they also purchase backup batteries, though Frank said that adding batteries to a solar install is a larger investment.

“The purpose [of NEM3] is to promote battery and on-site solar energy storage in homes,” he added. So if a person installs solar with energy storage, a battery system, then they don’t have to export to the grid. They can send the excess solar energy to their batteries and then use the batteries to get them through the night, keeping more of the savings.”

Not only is Solarponics helping educate the Central Coast on the upcoming NEM changes, but they also helped San Luis Obispo County reach its 20,000th solar-powered home.

“We did our part. I mean 20,000 residential solar homes and counting. That’s a big deal,” Frank said.

The North County itself has over 5,000 solar homes, and the coastal communities have over 2,000. And from 2012 thru 2022, Solarponics was named Top Solar Contractor in the nation by Solar Power World Magazine.

“I’d say the North County has huge solar saturation. So, in other words, the per capita of households that have solar is really high; it’s about 18 percent, almost one in five homes,” stated Frank. “For comparison, the national average is 3.2 percent. I feel that the North County has really done their part in becoming more energy efficient, reducing carbon emotions, and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.”

Solarponics has also planted over 2,000 trees in California’s national forests through the Arbor Day Foundation, in honor of every new customer that goes solar. They have also donated more than $500,000 to nonprofits in the area since 1975.

“Going forward, we hope to continue to help Central Coast residents become energy independent, and continue to help our communities thrive,” Frank said. “There are many new exciting energy-saving technologies on the horizon. Stay tuned.”

Solarponics is located in Atascadero at 4700 El Camino Real and is open Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For inquiries, call (805) 466-5595 or check out its website at solarponics.com.

Cynthia Lohr’s Dedication to J. Lohr’s Wine Legacy

Niehaus Ryan Group, where she gained a wealth of knowledge that she would later bring to her family’s wine business. In 2002 she was ready to join J. Lohr as director of communications. In 2009, Lohr was named marketing vice president.

Now in the role of chief brand officer (since 2019), she oversees corporate and product visibility and direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales. Plus, she shares the company’s operational oversight alongside her father, Jerry, and her brothers Steve, who serves as president & CEO, and Lawrence, J. Lohr’s COO.

Yet here is a woman who, by her own account, grew up shy and awkward. The mother of two daughters (Annabella, 20, and Emily Rose, 27) projects a radiance that can only be matched by her engaging persona and dedication to her family’s legacy.

While Jerry was raised on a South Dakota farm, her mother Carol came from Long Island, New York.

“My mother was fierce in devotion to her family; she always prioritized the interests of her children, and ensured that family showed up for one another,” Lohr recalled, a legacy she carries on with her two daughters based on the East Coast.

“My father is fiscally prudent but also knows when to take big risks,” Lohr said. “Every decision that Jerry and our team make is always to drive quality and it shows in our wines. There’s an underlying dependability. That’s why we are number one at this price point for so many years.”

That price point starts at a consumer-friendly $13 and goes up to $100, a spectrum that delivers quality and consistency, a hallmark of the J. Lohr portfolio. The $100 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon’s inaugural vintage of 2013 debuted in 2017 to honor Jerry’s 80th birthday.

With an annual case production of approximately 1.55 million (in 2022), J. Lohr has a global distribution in 25 countries. Despite the growth, the 21st largest winery in the U.S. remains family owned and operated.

We were joined by Steve Peck, VP of winemaking, who has been with the winery since 2007.

“There’s no extravagance; it’s a humble family operation with steady and continuous growth,” he commented. “Proceeds from last year’s crop pay for this year’s crop. Money goes into the winery and vineyard.”

Peck and Jessica Kolhoff, director of hospitality, conducted a tasting of two wines from Monterey: a pinot noir from Santa Lucia Highlands and a pinot blanc from Arroyo Seco. From Paso Robles, we sampled the Gesture Syrah from Adelaida District, a malbec from El Pomar and the Signature cabernet sauvignon from Creston District.

Growing up in the wine industry, Cynthia Lohr wasn’t sure how she would fit in at J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, founded by her father, Jerry Lohr, one of California’s early wine pioneers.

“As a young person, I didn’t know what role I wanted to play to be a part of our family brand,” Lohr told me when I met her recently. I had met Lohr on several occasions and wanted to know more about this middle sibling bookended by her brothers Steve and Lawrence.

I met her at the J. Lohr hospitality center in Paso, now sporting a newly remodeled look. The soft-spoken executive resides in the Bay Area with her designer husband, Sam Lucente. Lohr grew up in San Jose and, in the 1980s, upon graduating from high school, briefly worked at the family winery in quality control and tasting room.

But she was drawn to marketing. After graduating from UC Davis with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Lohr began her professional journey in communications and public relations in the technology sector in the Bay Area. Here she honed her marketing skills, holding high-level positions at Alexander Ogilvy Public Relations, Alexa Internet, and

For Jerry Lohr it all began in the 1960s as he conducted extensive research into California’s wine growing which led him to the Arroyo Seco region of Monterey County for his first vineyard.

“There was no Arroyo Seco or Santa Lucia Highland AVAs in 1972,” his daughter commented on the year her father planted the original 280 acres to some 11 varieties in 1972 and ’73. The Lohr family’s San Jose winery opened the following year. Early years were challenging for the budding vintner as little was known about modern winemaking in those days.

“But from Paso to Monterey County, Jerry had the knowledge and uncanny ability to choose the right vineyard site to reveal that particular varietal character,” she mused. Jerry also recognized the potential of Monterey County, specifically the Arroyo Seco AVA, and was instrumental in establishing the Monterey County Vintners and Growers Association.

Lohr is committed to philanthropic causes and has served on several boards such as Headlands Center for the Arts and REACH Central Coast. Losing her mother to breast cancer led Lohr to launch J. Lohr’s Touching Lives program, a partnership with National Breast Cancer Foundation.

An Irish ditty for your St. Patrick’s Day

L et's start today with this little Irish ditty I found on a St. Patrick's Day card many years ago.

"When Irish eyes are smilin' and Irish smiles are big, When Irish hearts are hopeful and the piper plays a jig, When Irish stew is bubblin' and the soda bread is hot, and Irish tea is steepin' in a little Irish pot, When the room is warm with laughter and the songs are bright and bold, And there's poetry and magic in the stories that are told, Isn't it a blessing, and isn't it just grand, To know a little part of you belongs to Ireland?"

Of course, on St. Patrick's Day, we can all be a wee bit Irish and to help celebrate on March 17 here are some recipes for your dinner menu.

Leftover corned beef can be transformed into moist meat patties to serve with scrambled eggs or the pancakes in this next recipe.

Glazed Corn Beef

Ingredients:

1 corned beef brisket, with seasonings

1/2 cup dark corn syrup

1 tablespoon prepared mustard

Directions:

Place corned beef in slow cooker. Cover with seasonings and add water to cover meat. Cook brisket on low for 4 to 5 hours. In small saucepan, combine corn syrup and mustard and bring to boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered for 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. cool. When meat is cooked, remove from slow cooker and trim excess fat and place on a rack. Brush top and sides with some of the glaze. Run under broiler 5 to 6 inches from heat, for 10 minutes, brushing several times with remaining glaze. If desired, add potatoes and carrots to liquid in slow cooker during the last hour of cooking the brisket. Then remove the brisket and vegetables and add wedges of cabbage and cook until tender.

I always check the vegetables to make sure they are cooked to my liking before I remove them. Be sure to slice the brisket across the grain.

This next recipe uses leftover corned beef and vegetables to make hash that can be served with a poached egg on top of each serving.

Red Flannel Hash

Ingredients:

1 cup or more chopped cooked corned beef

1/2 cup chopped cooked vegetables, such as carrots, parsnips, green cabbage, and onions

1 cup chopped cooked beets

2 cups chopped boiled potatoes

Bacon fat or vegetable shortening

About 1/2 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon chopped parsley

4 poached eggs (optional)

Directions:

Toss the chopped meat and vegetables in a mixing bowl. Heat a skillet containing fat or shortening about 1/4 inch deep. Spread the hash smoothly to cover the bottom of the pan, tamping it down a bit and adding a little broth. Cook without stirring over a very low heat, until the hash begins to brown at the edges, at least 30 minutes. Fold it as you would an omelet and slice it onto a hot platter. Sprinkle with parsley.

Corned Beef Pancakes

Ingredients:

12 ounces cooked corned beef

1 medium onion

1/4 green pepper, ribs and seeds removed

2 tablespoons chopped parsley

1 tablespoon bread crumbs

1 large egg

Directions:

Chop corned beef coarsely, and put it in a food processor with the onion and green pepper, then spin until all is well mixed. Add parsley, bread crumbs, and egg and spin until well mixed. Shape mixture into 8 small or 4 large patties, and fry slowly in a heavy skillet without grease, about 3 minutes per side.

Happy St. Patrick's Day with this blessing:

"May the Leprechauns be near you, To spread Luck along your way. And may all the Irish Angels, Smile on you St. Patrick's Day"

Eating Seasonally with Spring Farmer’s Market Fettuccini

It’s finally feeling like spring. March is the month that marks the end of frost for most of us in North County. That means we can start our spring gardens and planning for summer crops. Our local farmers are very busy weeding, planting, and harvesting plenty of delicious vegetables right now.

In-season produce is always best if you are trying to get the most nutrients from your food. Not only do fruits and veggies taste better when they are grown in season, but they are packed with vitamins and minerals. When you buy your produce from a local farmer, that produce is super fresh and has not lost any nutrients during transport or storage.

I was also told by a wise farmer that you need to eat more seasonally because your body needs those specific nutrients during different times of the year. For example, oranges, kale, and spinach ripen in the winter. All of these are high in vitamin C and Vitamin D, which are especially important in the winter when there is less

sunlight and more colds going around. So, if you feel like you need a nutritional boost, head to your local farmer’s market for some in-season produce. We can enjoy many fruits and veggies here year-round due to our nice weather, but there are a few fruits and veggies you should keep an eye out for that are in season this month:

• Asparagus

• Peas

• Kumquats

• Broccoli Rabe

• Mushrooms

• Artichokes

• Grapefruit

• Brussel Sprouts

• Leeks

Farmer Frank can help you pick the perfect mushrooms for this dish, but my favorite is the lion’s mane or oyster mushrooms. Onions are essential to this dish and luckily you can find them year-round from many local farmers.

This recipe is perfect to utilize some fresh seasonal produce. You can find almost all the ingredients at your local farmer’s markets.

Ingredients:

6 tbsp salted butter

4 tbsp olive oil

3 large sweet yellow onions, sliced peeled and cut into ¼”

1 tbsp sugar

1 lb thin fresh asparagus tough ends removed

8 oz chopped mushrooms (lion’s mane or oyster)

Directions:

1. Heat butter and oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add onion and sugar and stir to combine. Cook for about 5 minutes, until onions are just starting to brown. Give a good stir and reduce heat to medium low. Continue to cook until onions are brown and caramelized, about an hour, stirring every 10 minutes. You want those onions to be brown and rich with flavor, so be patient with this step.

2. Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to package directions, and prepare your vegetables and grate your cheese.

3. When onions are caramelized, stir in the asparagus and mushrooms, and cook until al dente, about 5 minutes.

4. Add the peas and the sherry, and cook for another 2 minutes, then toss in the cooked pasta. When well combined, add cheese and toss until cheese is melted and pasta is well coated with onion sauce.

5. Season well with salt and pepper.

6. Serve with extra freshly grated parmesan cheese

10 oz fresh peas

⅓ cup sherry cooking wine (or chicken broth with lemon)

10 oz fettuccini pasta (fresh Etto pasta is delicious with this)

½ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese* plus more for serving

Salt and pepper

Note:

The caramelized onions should be very juicy because this will be your sauce for the pasta. If you feel like the onions need more moisture to continue caramelizing, just add more olive oil as needed throughout the cooking process. Make sure to add salt and pepper to taste when you think they are close to being done.

If you don’t have sherry wine or do not want to use alcohol, you can substitute it with chicken broth and a little lemon.

Being a Part of Small Hometown Communities:

Believing in Each Other, Well-being, and More

Being a part of a small hometown community is a truly special experience. It means knowing the names of your neighbors, recognizing familiar faces in town, and feeling a sense of belonging. Living in a small town offers a unique opportunity to build long-lasting relationships, get to know your neighbors, and contribute to a supportive community that believes in the well-being of all its members.

The North County is a perfect example of a place where small-town charm and a close-knit community meet the beauty of nature. Whether it’s enjoying a morning hike on a local trail, taking a stroll on the beach, or admiring the wildflowers in the springtime, there’s something for everyone.

But living in a small town isn’t just about enjoying the natural beauty and charm. It’s about the people who make up the community. Small towns offer a unique opportunity to come together and support one another, whether it’s rallying around local causes or showing up for our neighbors in times of need.

One of the most important ways we can support our community is by shopping local and supporting small businesses. Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy and help to create jobs, generate revenue, and bring unique character to our town. By choosing to shop local, we can keep our dollars within our community and contribute to the growth and prosperity of our hometown.

Raising our kids in North County provides an environment where they are surrounded by people who genuinely care about their well-being and growth. Neighbors become family, and everyone looks out for one another. It’s a place where kids can be kids and have the freedom to run around and play outside without parents constantly worrying about their safety.

Taking pride in our community means doing our part to keep it beautiful and thriving. This includes volunteering for local events and organizations, participating in community clean-ups, and being a good neighbor. We can also work to preserve the history and unique character of our town by supporting local museums and historical sites.

Living in a small-town community means being a part of something bigger than ourselves. It means taking care of our neighbors, preserving our natural beauty, and working to keep our unique character alive. This lifestyle brings a sense of fulfillment and happiness to our lives.

Let’s continue to take pride in our hometown and do our part to support the community. Thank you for shopping local, volunteering, and being good neighbors. Together, we can keep the charm and beauty of the North County alive for generations to come.
