Sub)objetivo Hoy se producen más imágenes que jamás en la historia y contamos con herramientas de edición cada vez más sofisticadas. La fotografía como documentación ya no es confiable por lo tanto las imágenes construidas desde una perspectiva artística están ganando importancia en la discusión y en la evolución del medio mismo.

Después de la era de la industrialización, las ciudades y la fotografía han ido evolucionando juntas muy de cerca, pero al parecer las postales turísticas han ido estrechando nuestra visión, tanto que cuando nos mencionan el nombre de algún lugar del mundo lo primero que imaginamos es la fotografía postal de alguno de sus monumentos.

Por lo tanto, para este ZOOMLAB “Sub)objetivo” nos gustaría destacar la perspectiva del artista y su poder para comunicar en imágenes más allá del documento.

Tres de los artistas en la exhibición fueron invitados a través del encuentro fotográfico Fotofest celebrado el pasado marzo de 2016 en Houston, Texas.

John Chakeres. Su obra tiene una calidad cercana a la pintura, las composiciones son precisas y calculadas, y la resolución de sus fotografías es tan alta que dejan percibir al material retratado.

Dennis Hodges. Sus dos proyectos “A sense of the soul” y “Eyedentity” nos hablan de la manipulación de la imagen al servicio de la propaganda política, y cómo la ciudad misma se manifiesta dando su propia opinión.

Johnna Arnold. justo en el momento en que las luces artificiales de la ciudad se encienden Johnna Arnold deja abierto el obturador de su cámara para que ese intervalo de tiempo quede capturando su propia imagen dentro del paisaje.

June Juno. (Juliana Gómez Quijano), a diferencia de los artista mencionados, June Juno fue invitada a participar del ZOOMLAB 2016 como representación local del evento y por su constante ejercicio de fotografiar a la ciudad desde una perspectiva más allá de la simple documentación.

Tony Rocco. (ARTE E INFANCIA) Tony vino a Medellín en 2015 a compartir con jóvenes y niños de diferentes colegios de la ciudad, éste año fue invitado a participar de “Deseartepaz Colombos” una serie de talleres desarrollados en cuatro ciudades del país, Cali, Bucaramanga, Manizales y Medellín. El resultado de sus talleres en Medellín está expuesto en el tercer piso del Colombo Americano sede Centro.

Sub)objetivo es un proyecto de formación en fotografía que se adhiere a una serie de laboratorios socio-artísticos coordinados por la Galería de Arte Contemporáneo Paul Bardwell enfocados en el tema de la ciudad durante el año 2016.

Sub)objetive Most of the images in history are being produced today and we have tools increasingly sophisticated for editing.

Photography as documentation is no longer reliable therefore the images constructed from an artistic perspective are gaining importance in the discussion and the evolution of the medium itself.

After industrialization era, cities and photography have evolved together closely, but apparently the tourist postcards have been narrowing our vision, so that when we mention the name of any place in the world the first thing we imagine is the postcard of some of its monuments.

Therefore, for this ZOOMLAB “Sub)objective,” we would like to highlight the perspective of the artist and his/her power to communicate with images beyond the document.

Johna Arnold. just at the right time when the artificial lights of the city are lit Johnna Arnold leaves open the shutter of her camera to capture that time interval with her own image in the landscape.

June Juno. (Juliana Gomez Quijano), unlike the aforementioned artist, June Juno was invited to participate in the ZOOMLAB 2016 as a local representation of the event and for her constant exercise to photograph the city from a perspective beyond a simple documentation.

Three of the artists in the exhibition were invited through the photographic meeting Fotofest held on March 2016 in Houston Texas.

Tony Rocco. (ART AND CHILDHOOD) Tony came to Medellin in 2015 to share with young people and children from different schools of the city, this year he was invited to participate in “Deseartepaz Colombos” a series of workshops held in four cities, Cali , Bucaramanga, Manizales and Medellin. The result of his workshops in Medellin is being exposed on the third floor of the Colombo Americano downtown.

John Chakeres. His work has a quality close to painting, the compositions are precise and calculated, and the resolution of his pictures are so high that let perceive the portrayed material.

Sub)objective is an education project in photography that adheres to a series of socio-art laboratories coordinated by the Contemporary Art Gallery Paul Bardwell focused on the theme City along 2016.

Dennis Hodges. His two projects “A sense of the soul” and “Eyedentity” tell us about image manipulation in the service of political propaganda, and how the city manifests itself giving its own opinion.

Eyedentity “Mírame a los ojos y escucha lo que no estoy diciendo, para que mis ojos hablen más fuerte que lo que mi voz nunca lo hará.” - Desconocido Los ojos son una parte esencial de la identidad propia.

Que son únicos para cada persona. Escáneres del iris se utilizan para identificar positivamente un individuo. Barras negras se utilizan en las publicaciones para ocultar los ojos de las personas. Celebridades usan gafas de sol para proteger su privacidad, por lo que es difícil reconocerlos.

En muchos países de todo el mundo, los carteles electorales, que se encuentran en las calles de todos los países, incluyen fotos de los candidatos, sus imágenes están pidiendo a los votantes que los miren a los ojos para creer en ellos, confiar en ellos y votar por ellos. En esta serie, otros vandalizan estas imágenes, por lo general desfigurando los ojos. Esta alteración de la identidad nos impide mirar a los candidatos a los ojos como se pretendía originalmente, se cambia el contexto de nuestra relación con ellos. Esta serie se pregunta cómo estos cambios afectan en consecuencia nuestra percepción de estos individuos.

Eyedentity “Look into my eyes and hear what I’m not saying, for my eyes speak louder than my voice ever will.” – Unknown Eyes are an essential part of one’s identity.

They’re unique to each and every person. Iris scanners are used to positively identify an individual. Black bars are used in publications to hide individuals’ eyes. Celebrities wear sunglasses to protect their privacy, making it difficult to recognize them.

In many countries around the world, election posters, which are posted on the streets throughout the countries, include photos of the candidates, their earnest images asking voters to look into their eyes, believe in them, trust them, vote for them. In this series, others vandalized these images, usually by disfiguring the eyes. This identity alteration prevents us from looking the candidates in the eye as originally intended, changing the context of our relationship with them. The question this series asks is how these changes consequently affect our perception of these individuals.

Paredes Medellín Veo el mundo como una imagen de la que elijo partes para crear mis fotografías. Para mí, una pared empieza como un lienzo, una superficie de dos dimensiones, una base sobre la cual construir una imagen. Cada pared es como un objeto encontrado, lleno de información que incorporo en mis fotografías.

Las fotografías que creo son el resultado de la forma en que pienso y cómo reaccionan a lo que veo. Tienen que ver con el proceso y cómo puedo filtrar la información visual del mundo que me rodea. En esencia, cada fotografía se convierte en su propio contenido.

MedellĂ­n Walls I see the world as an image from which I choose parts to create my photographs. For me, a wall begins as a canvas, a two-dimensional surface, a foundation on which to build an image. Each wall is like a found object, filled with the information I incorporate into my photographs.

The photographs I create are a result of how I think and how I react to what I see. They are about process and how I filter the visual information of the world around me. In essence each photograph becomes its own content.

In/Finite Potential Es una investigación visual sobre la relación entre mi persona y la extensa red de autopistas que han ayudado a dar forma a mi vida. El trabajo viene de un deseo de reconocer y apreciar la infraestructura que a menudo pasa desapercibida, y la creencia de que esta exitosa personalización de nuestro entorno ha cambiado de forma sistemática nuestra relación con la tierra. La conexión entre el consumo y su efecto sobre el medio ambiente es difícil de comprender y más fácil de ignorar.

is a visual inquiry into the relationship between myself and the extensive network of freeways that have helped to shape my life. The work comes from a desire to recognize and appreciate the infrastructure which often goes under recognized, and a belief that this successful customizing of our surroundings has systematically altered our relationship with the land. The connection between our consumption and its effect on our environment is difficult to comprehend ­easier to ignore.

Me fascina el contraste entre estas estructuras inhóspitas de utilidad y una pequeña, carnosa presencia humana como la mía. Busco la belleza inesperada en estas tierras prohibidas, en un sentido combinado entre investigación y rebelión. Las estructuras parecen siniestras e inequívocas, sin embargo, al relacionarme directamente con ellas, su masividad se vuelve absurda, su distancia aclara todo: creador y creado, la intención y la realidad.

I am fascinated by the contrast between these inhospitable structures of utility and a small, fleshy human such as myself. I look for unexpected beauty in these forbidden lands, as I trespass with a combined sense of research and rebellion. The structures appear ominous and unequivocal – yet by relating with them directly, their massiveness becomes absurd, their distance all to clear: creator and created, intention and reality.

Mediante la combinación de la iluminación artificial con los restos del crepúsculo, y velocidades largas de obturación con las legiones de coches que nunca terminan en un lugar a menudo pueden convertirse en posibilidades de extranjeros desconocidos. Mis sentimientos por estas autopistas siguen siendo complejos. Aprecio las acciones necesarias para crear estas estructuras de toma de decisiones: comunales, compartición de recursos y de trabajo físico duro. He pasado mucho tiempo admirando estas barreras de hormigón, haciéndolas compatibles con la aparente futilidad de mi estima. He cantado sus canciones, admirado su agrietamiento inesperado, entre sus sólidos muros de contención sintiendo las corrientes de coches pasando por encima de la cabeza, pero hasta el momento estas estructuras de autopistas aparecerán solemnemente inafectadas.

By combining artificial lighting with the remains of twilight, and long shutter speeds with the legions of cars that never end ­a place so often utilized can become foreign­ possibilities unknown. My feelings for these freeways remain complex. I appreciate the actions necessary to create these structures: communal decision­ making, resource sharing, and hard physical work. I have spent time admiring these concrete barriers, while reconciling with the seeming futility of my esteem. I have sung it songs, admired its unanticipated cracking, crawled between its massive retaining walls feeling the streams of cars jettisoning overhead, but as yet these freeway tructures appear solemnly unaffected.

Exploración Sub)objetiva de la ciudad

Sub)objective exploration of the city

Como exploradores, modernos flâneurs que se regocijan con las posibilidades fotográficas que ofrece el paisaje urbano, los estudiantes de Colegiatura Colombiana, de la mano del fotógrafo invitado John Chakeres, asumieron el reto de capturar la ciudad en imágenes que mostraran su visión particular del mundo, sus intereses y deseos, sus reflexiones frente a la vida que vibra en las calles y frente al crecimiento descontrolado de una ciudad que parece negar su conexión con la naturaleza, y que uniforma con edificios grises y adoquines lo que en otro tiempo fueron viejos caserones de colores con jardines.

As explorers, modern flâneurs who rejoice with photographic possibilities of the urban landscape, the students from Colegiatura Colombiana, and the invited photographer John Chakeres, they were challenged to capture the city in pictures to show their particular view of the world, their interests and desires, their thoughts towards life that vibrates in the streets and against the uncontrolled growth of a city that seems to deny their connection with nature, and uniforms with gray buildings and cobblestone what were once old houses of colors with gardens.

Esta mirada Sub)objetiva de Medellín que presentamos en esta serie de fotografías permite, como dijo Susan Sontag, descubrir “en la ciudad un paisaje de extremos voluptuosos” que se hace visible tanto desde una perspectiva aérea y distante, casi fría, como desde el contacto más cercano con sus huellas, sus cicatrices, sus colores y texturas; un reflejo casi abstracto de la urbe en crecimiento que no puede olvidar la forma en que el cuerpo, parafraseando a Heidegger y a Carlos Mesa, habita de manera poética y coreográfica el espacio.

This Sub)objective look of Medellin presented in this series of photographs allows, as Susan Sontag said, to discover “in the city a landscape of voluptuous extremes” that is visible both from the air and distant, almost cold perspective, and from the closer contact with their fingerprints, scars, colors and textures; an almost abstract reflection of the growing city that cannot forget the body possibilities, paraphrasing Heidegger and Carlos Mesa, inhabits a poetic and choreographic way of space.

Es por ello que la diversidad en el resultado de esta versión de ZOOMLAB, no sólo desde la fotografía y sus aspectos técnicos, sino también desde los sustratos usados, medidas y forma de montar, plantea una pregunta: ¿Qué tan objetiva puede ser la mirada de quien descubre, a cada paso, nuevos lugares de una ciudad que se despliega colorida y pintoresca ante su lente?

That is why diversity in the outcome of this version of ZOOMLAB, not only photography and its technical aspects, but also from the substrates used, dimensions and shapes to assemble, and it raises a question: How objective can be the look of one who discovers at every step, new places in a city that unfolds before its colorful and picturesque shape in front of the lens?

Ciudad pública, privada e íntima

Public, private and intimate city

Desde años anteriores, la ciudad ha sido objeto de análisis para los estudiantes de la Fundación Universitaria Bellas Artes participantes en el taller ZOOMLAB, quienes han aprovechado la asesoría de un artista internacional invitado para desarrollar ideas a través de la fotografía. En esta ocasión, fue el artista Dennis Hodges el encargado de acompañar este proceso, motivándonos a repensar críticamente el tema de lo público, lo privado y lo íntimo.

Since previous years, the city has become a subject of analysis for the students at Fundación Universitaria Bellas Artes who have participated in the workshop ZOOMLAB. They have been able to develop their ideas through photography with the assessment of an international invited artist. This year, Dennis Hodges was the photographer who followed the process, motivating the students to critically re-think the theme of the public, the private and the intimate.

Con un componente de visitas a distintos lugares de la ciudad (sitios turísticos, barrios, lugares en construcción y espacios diversos), y otro de conceptualización y revisión de imágenes, el taller fue una oportunidad única para cuestionarnos sobre los modos de habitar la ciudad, la memoria y la proyección hacia el futuro, las relaciones de cercanía o distancia social, la arquitectura, la identidad personal y colectiva, entre otros conceptos relacionados; al tiempo que fue una ocasión excepcional para atrevernos a explorar posibilidades plásticas del lenguaje fotográfico.

Al finalizar el ZOOMLAB, se hizo evidente la dificultad de llegar a una definición exacta de lo público, privado e íntimo, dado lo complejo y contradictorio que puede ser lo urbano, y las múltiples apropiaciones y significados de estos términos. Es por eso que ofrecemos a manera de conclusión el conjunto de miradas subjetivas presentes en esta muestra, la cual es únicamente un resultado parcial de todo lo aprendido en este laboratorio de pensamiento y creación fotográfica.

The workshop had a component of various field trips to different places in the city (touristic places, neighborhoods, places under construction, and diverse spaces), and another one of conceptualization and image review. It was an unique opportunity to question about the ways of inhabiting the city, the memory and the idea of future, social relations or distances, architecture, individual and collective identity, among other related concepts.

Simultaneously, it was an exceptional occasion to explore artistic possibilities with the language of photography.

At the end of ZOOMLAB, it became evident for us the difficulty of reaching an exact definition of public, private and intimate, because of the multiple appropriations and meanings of these terms, and the complex and contradictory characteristics of the urban life. For that reason, we offer as a conclusion the group of subjective visions gathered in this show, which is only a partial result of all lessons learned in this laboratory of photographic creation and thought.

We greatly thank Dennis Hodges for his invaluable input and dedication, as well as the Centro Colombo Americano, Bellas Artes and allied universities for making this experience possible.

Soy curioso y cuando llego a un lugar, me gusta ver y comprender lo que sucede a mi alrededor. Lo que pasa es que necesito desplazarme despacio y evito los viajes en avión. Un fotógrafo no tiene que correr sino caminar, infatigablemente: entonces podrá captar lo que le ofrecen las aceras, la esquina de la calle, la vida.

I am curious and when I arrive at a place, I like to see and understand what is happening around me. What happens is that I need to move slowly and so I avoid air travel.

A photographer has to run but not walk, indefatigably: then they can grasp what is offered by the sidewalks, the street corner, life.

Mi experiencia en ZOOMLAB 2016 fue como docente acompañante de la fotógrafa Juliana Gómez, Juno, quien tuvo a cargo trabajar con los estudiantes de artes de la Universidad de Antioquia y que para esta versión planteaba mirar la ciudad de manera Sub-objetiva en tres recorridos, con 3 ópticas diferentes: la ciudad vista desde arriba, la intermedia y la que vemos en una capa o nivel inferior.

My experience in ZOOMLAB 2016 as a teacher accompanying the photographer Juliana Gomez:

Es así como a partir de estas premisas y articulándolas con los intereses particulares de cada participante, se plantea un dialogo con la ciudad, que para muchos, por habitar en ella y estar insertos en la cotidianidad creen conocer; pero en la realidad este tipo de experiencias les abren nuevas perspectivas, diversas lecturas y develan capas de una ciudad que cambia día a día, con sus diferentes matices y contrastes.

ZOOMLAB es un espacio para crear, repensar la ciudad y sobretodo conocer otras miradas que aportan al proceso individual de creación en todas sus etapas, para concluir en una exhibición donde de manera colectiva se plantea una narrativa que en este caso se realiza entendiendo los conceptos cartográficos y taxonómicos del montaje en relación a las fotografías presentadas.

Gracias a Juliana Gómez que con su cámara instantánea nos remitió a esa experiencia primaria con la imagen y la observación de lo que podemos considerar como insignificante y a los estudiantes Angélica Flórez, Sebastián López y Ronald Estrada por compartir sus mundos en imágenes.

Juno, who was in charge of working with arts students of the Universidad de Antioquia planned for this version to look at the city in a Sub-objective way in three runs with three different optics: the city as seen from above, the middle and what we see from the lower layer or level.

It is thus that, starting from these premises and articulating them with the individual interests of each participant, a dialogue with the city arises, that for many, from living in it and being part of its everyday life, they think they know; but in reality these types of experiences open up new perspectives and different readings, revealing layers of a city that changes from day to day, with its different nuances and contrasts.

ZOOMLAB is a space to create, rethink the city and, above all, to know other views that contribute to the individual process of creation in all its stages, to culminate in an exhibition where a collective narrative is laid out that is realized in this case by understanding the cartographic and taxonomic concepts of the installation in relation to the photographs presented.

My thanks to Juliana Gómez with her instant camera, who sent us on that primary experience with image and observation of what we could consider as insignificant, and to the students Angélica Flórez, Sebastián López and Ronald Estrada for sharing their worlds in pictures.
