viewpoint

Season’s Greetings As the newly appointed managing editor of Bodyshop Magazine, I would like to start off by saying that it’s an honour to join this inspiring and innovative industry with such a well-established publication. Although I am new to Bodyshop, the autobody industry has always been a part of my life. My grandfather was a licensed autobody man for most of his life, and my father has been in the trade for more than 40 years. I also have an uncle who is currently the coordinator of the Auto Collision Repairer program at Fanshawe College in London, Ont. Needless to say, I grew up with a bodyshop nearby, the issues that go along with owning such a business, and an interesting assortment of family cars. (Actually, my first car was a 1978 Dodge Aspen—painted a cherry red metallic with baby moon hubcaps—but I digress.) During a decade-long career as a business editor and journalist, I’ve provided comprehensive coverage on manufacturing, engineering, and automotive topics. I bring this experience to you, and my commitment to provide you with the most compelling and relevant content for your businesses. There will be something useful and helpful in each article, and we’ll keep you up to date on new regulations, processes, technologies, and best practices. I’ve had a very exciting start! As my colleagues note, it was a baptism by fire—my first week was spent at the APEX and SEMA shows in Las Vegas (see page 14), where I had the opportunity to meet many industry professionals and association members. I was astounded by how much the industry has changed and continues to change, and all the amazing technologies and tools. By the way, when did painters become rock stars? For this reason, I have to say I’m surprised that one of the major issues in the industry is attracting young workers. Check out the CCIF Report on page 10 to find out what industry members are doing to attract more young talent. Also within these pages you will find our Annual Autobody Directory, new technology and processes for cleaning paint guns (page 12), and a 2011 outlook on how bodyshops across the country fared over the past year (page 15). With a new year upon us, get ready for more exciting issues. February is now our Metal Issue, featuring innovations in OE metals and how they will affect the aftermarket industry, as well as a spotlight on a southern Ontario metal fabricator. I would also like to start a new section that gives each of you a voice in our editorial. We would like to publish challenges you’ve encountered—such as taking a bumper off a car before you can change a headlight—and how you figured it out. Your ideas and insights are what makes this magazine unique, and I invite all of you to contact me, either by phone or email. B Noelle Stapinsky nstapinsky@bodyshopbiz.com

Kirmac Collision Launches Quick Repair Program

B

odyshop organization Kirmac Collision has developed a system to get damaged cars fixed and back on the road in a matter of days, not weeks, after a motor vehicle accident. The process, called the Instant Access Program, takes in, assesses, and repairs vehicles immediately. “We developed the Instant Access Program to make our customers’ experience as positive as possible surrounding a collision,” says Kirmac Collision founder and CEO Ian McIntosh. The Instant Access car repair model is very different from the norm, he explains. “We streamlined the repair process so that it’s fast and hassle-free, reconfiguring our entire production model to better serve our customers and insurance partners,” says McIntosh. “We now repair vehicles both faster and better so that customers can get back on the road sooner.” With this program all the vehicle owner has to do is call the insurer, file a claim, and drop the vehicle off at Kirmac—no appointment required. And a replacement vehicle is provided for the duration of the repair. Kirmac Collision first completes a full estimate of all the vehicle damages related to the accident. Traditionally, a collision repair shop is only able to see the exterior damage caused by the accident. This is because the parts of the vehicle related to the accident have not yet been fully removed. But using the Instant Access Program, the vehicle is completely disassembled prior to completing the damage report. This ensures a complete assessment of all damage related to the accident. This approach results in a complete and accurate estimate from the outset, reducing the parts procurement time, and therefore reducing the time required to repair the customer’s vehicle.

Colour App Gets Smarter

kzoNobel’s Sikkens iMatchColor smart phone app now provides access to its Automotive & Aerospace Coatings (A&AC), Sikkens Mixit Online colour retrieval system. With the launch of A&AC, there are more iMatchColor versions for mobile operating systems, which are available in French, Dutch, Swedish and Korean language versions of Mixit Online. Major improvements have also been made in the Japanese language implementation of the online system. “This gives our customers 24-hour access to our colour database via their mobile phones. And by making the software available in more languages, we are able to extend the convenience of Mixit Online into more and more markets,” says colour marketing director Ben Zweers. iMatchColor was originally launched in the summer of 2010 as an app for the iPhone, which has since been downloaded more than 10,000 times. At the same time, A&AC introduced a smart phone-friendly interface for Mixit Online, providing easy access from Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7, and Android operating systems. iMatchColor is now available as an app for all Android mobile phones, which will be followed by a version for most BlackBerry models.

The Labour Lull

mong the myriad of important industry issues addressed at the Canadian Collision Industry Forum’s (CCIF) fall meeting, the labour shortage in the collision repair industry and strategies for developing and keeping skilled staff took the spotlight. Leanne Blackborrow of CCIF’s Skills Program said, “Catch and release is okay for fishing, but not the best policy for the collision repair industry.” With an aging workforce making up the majority of the industry—the average age of technicians is 48—it’s essential to have strategies in place to raise awareness and attract a younger generation. “The CCIF Skills Program focuses on raising awareness and attracting young people, and has brought collision repair from obscurity to become a major feature among the more than 40 trades on show at provincial and national skills competitions,” said Blackborrow. Since the skills program launched in 2008, CCIF has showcased the collision repair trade to over 500,000 visitors at skills competitions across the country. “If the industry is to successfully replace the leaving or retiring skilled staff, the number of apprentices [in the industry] must rise by 60 per cent,” said Blackborrow. “With next year’s National Skills Competition returning to Edmonton, a province that has suffered the most from labour shortages in collision repair, it would be good to see a positive local impact to get young people to look at pre-employment and apprenticeship programs.” To do this, Blackborrow said there needs to be a willingness of employers to invest in apprentices and grow their own staff for the future. But it’s not just about attracting a younger workforce; with this new generation of journeymen, it’s essential that shops have strategies in place for staff development and retention. CCIF chairman Tom Bissonnette led a panel discussion with established professionals—which included Brad Bjarnason of Concours Collision Centres, Calgary; Frank Duffin of the Career and Technology Centre, Calgary; Darryl Hemstreet of CARSTAR Red Deer; and Brian Williams of SAIT, Calgary— to explore strategies on how to prepare, nurture, and retain new entrants. Bissonnette suggested the initiative should start at the high school level, where career opportunities must be presented “in the right way, not just through shop classes in outdated and underfunded facilities, but in schools with a technical focus, the

latest equipment, and an established link to the industry.” Duffin confirmed that there are links being forged between Calgary’s Career and Technology Centre, SAIT, and some leading collision repairers, as they develop best practices and examples for others to follow. Bjarnason, a young journeyman, commented on the importance of having goals and a sense of career path. “At the shop level, owners must share their vision, strategy, and values if they are to fuel the passion and pride that will cause young people to stay and develop,” he said. Hemstreet concurred and urged shop owners to maintain the passion and interest of their older staff. To do this, he said, “Ask their opinion, involve them in thinking through issues, keep their skills current with new training, and encourage them to become mentors to the younger staff.” Other presentations at the CCIF’s fall meeting included: Innovating to be Unique and to be Valued, by Robert Schmidt of reBox Creative; How I-CAR Canada is Meeting Repairer and Insurer Needs, by Andrew Shepherd of I-CAR Canada; Is the Industry Ready to Cope with New OE Technology? panel session; Making Recycled Parts a Viable Option, by Larry Jefferies of CARSTAR Canada and Mike Kaplaniak of Fix Auto; and Collision Repair in British Columbia, by Martin von Holst of the Automotive Retailers Association. Spray Guns by Martha Uniacke Breen

B

y now, Canadian bodyshops have made the switch over to waterborne paint and equipment. But waterborne finishes have very different characteristics in use from the old solventborne formulas, requiring (in some cases) new equipment and new techniques for maintenance as well as application. For some techs, the different handling characteristics of the new formulas have raised issues; you can’t put new wine in old bottles, so to speak, and expect the same result. But in fact, there are only a few key principles to keep in mind, and manufacturers have come up with solutions for both cleaning and the application of the new formulas that have made it easier to produce a professional result, and to make cleaning and other maintenance fast, economical and trouble-free. One of the biggest differences between waterborne and solvent-borne has to do with the corrosive properties of water itself. “Because waterborne paint is denser, has higher calcium residues and a higher pH level, it has much greater capacity to damage the internal components of the guns than solventborne,” explains Thomas Gierens, of Sata Canada/Eurotech in Calgary. “Moreover, minerals in water can dry in the air passages and contaminate the paint job.” What this means is that extra care must be taken in the cleaning process, and the gun must be thoroughly cleaned and dried as soon as possible after use to avoid leaving any residue. Also, dried waterborne paint does not re-wet and dissolve in cleaner the way solvent-borne does; the old days of taking the gun apart and soaking the pieces in a bucket of cleaning solution are over. Nowadays, state of the art spray guns address these problems with metals that are impervious to the effects of water-based formulations, especially stainless or anodized steel, and body designs that are intended to keep water (both during the painting and cleaning processes) where it belongs, in the fluid passages. Even so, it’s imperative to take care when cleaning. Mark Hebbeler of Anest Iwata says, “Keep waterborne cleaning materials out of the air passages; only apply them to

the fluid passages. The biggest thing to remember is to make sure the gun is dried off after cleaning—that may be the biggest thing of all.” Along with careful cleaning, time is of the essence, as dried waterborne paint is much more difficult to remove thoroughly. As Robert DuBois of Fillon Technologies points out, “Waterborne paint residue sticks, and guns need to be cleaned promptly after spraying. Painters should avoid leaving spray guns in a washer for extended periods of time, because they may rust or corrode. [Also,] having a clean spray gun is essential for spraying waterborne, to avoid contamination-related issues. Waterborne waste must never be combined with solvent, so buying a dedicated waterborne gun washer makes sense.” After cleaning, the spray gun should be carefully blown dry to remove any cleaner and water residue from the passages. The air cap should be removed and blown dry as well, says Jeff Parker of DeVilbiss, as “any moisture left in a waterborne spray gun could cause potential problems later.” Along with the fluid passages themselves, air cap and tip selection have become crucial for an efficient job. “Drying properties of waterborne coatings vary among paint manufacturers,” says Parker. “Careful consideration must be paid to the paint companies’ ideal recommended fluid tip and air cap for a particular waterborne paint.” Several manufacturers have come up with air caps specially designed to improve spraying performance with waterborne that break the paint down into a finer mist, making it easier to produce an even, controlled application of paint (Sata’s 4000RP model, for example, includes a thumb control mounted on the sprayer to allow you to adjust the spray fan in use for even more precise control). Dave Binnie of CASM Agency, which represents Dominion Sure Seal products, says, “Waterborne paints have a reputation for being slower to dry, so tip sizing is all the more critical between brands. In the solvent days, most base coats were similar in spraying viscosity, so tip sizing was fairly even between the

s

spray gun different brands. But now strong adherence to size must be observed for the different products to perform well. Additionally, different air caps can be interchanged during high humidity conditions to vary the size of paint droplet to facilitate drying.” As Hebbeler points out, superior atomizing technologies such as the LV Technology found on Anest Iwata’s latest guns have an added attraction in that they significantly improve performance and transfer efficiency, which translates into time and material savings. “We have documented that after painters have switched to [these guns], their material savings have been through the roof, as much as a 20 to 30% reduction—that’s real money.” While it’s possible to use a standard spray gun with waterborne, the newest gun designs have been designed with the material’s specific application properties and cleaning needs in mind, to maximize efficiency and control, while making the cleaning process less troublesome. DeVilbiss’ two new Tekna models, the QuickClean and the ProLite, feature its proprietary QuickClean coating, a non-stick coating that makes paint removal easier. The coating is applied to both inside air and fluid passages, providing high corrosion resistance and easy cleaning. “The guns are also very scratch-resistant,” adds Parker. “After six months of use in a bodyshop, they look like new.” In addition, the Tekna ProLite comes with three different air caps, developed for excellent atomization in varying climate and humidity conditions. The gun comes with two air caps, and two or three fluid tips, depending on the model selected.

Along with new guns, new products for cleaning them quickly and easily—even in the midst of a busy day at the shop, in-between coats or with multiple jobs —have appeared. The Sata Clean RCS is a pneumatic cleaning system that can be mounted right in the booth, for quick and thorough cleaning in as little as 25 seconds. The user simply flushes and cleans the paint channel and air cap by applying the gun to the left-hand compartment, followed by using a special holder on the right hand side that blow-dries and collects used cleaning liquid. There is no need to disassemble the gun, and all waste is automatically and safely collected. Fillon’s Jet Clean system is also easy to use for cleaning on the go. The wall-mounted unit uses aerosol cans of cleaner that the company says are highly cost-efficient (it can clean about 35 spray guns, for a per-use cost of about 28 cents), and is completely self-contained. Unlike some quick-clean systems, there is no misting, harmful vapours are eliminated and the system takes less than a minute to clean a gun. If more thorough cleaning is required or desired and the gun must be manually cleaned using cleaning product and water, Sata’s Thomas Gierens has some final advice. “It is imperative that all moisture be removed after cleaning the components, and that certain components like the air inlet where the hose attaches to the gun should be completely closed off from moisture; the fluid channel is where you should focus. Water is much more corrosive than you might think, so you must take every precaution while cleaning with it.”

ith over 100,000 attendees and 2,000 exhibitors, the 2011 SEMA show, hosted at the Las Vegas Convention Center, is the industry’s premiere event, showcasing more than 1,500 accessorized and customized four- and twowheeled vehicles. The moment you stepped onto the show floor, there was eye candy at every turn. This year, the PPG booth was themed “Johnny O’s Collision and Customs,” and featured impressive vintage cars and motorcycles. Along with celebrity painters signing autographs, PPG featured a ’59 Le Baron Imperial (image 1) front and centre of the booth. Directly behind it in a paint booth-style display was an Imperial Speedster (image 2) by Murray Pfaff, a hot-rod and custom-car designer from Royal Oak, Mich. The design team took an Imperial and sliced and diced it down to this hot little sports car. If racing is your thing, the Original Parts Group showcased a custom Raybestos ’64 GTO-R road racer (image 3), which was the grand prize of an online contest. On the Las Vegas show floor, brand reps and builders Kevin Tully and Chad Hill announced Nina Murray of Flesherton, Ont., as the winner. And indeed, the work of top celebrity painters such as Chip Foose and the Ring Bros.—1970 Camaro (image 4)—attracted many to the BASF display. From speedsters, custom cars such as a 1972 Chevelle SS (image 5), and racecars to innovations in paint, accessories and tools—including Lincoln Electric’s demonstration of its virtual welding simulation (image 6)—everything car enthusiasts and industry professionals could dream of was all under one glorious roof.

2011 outlook

Survival of the Progressive By Noelle Stapinsky

W

hile we often hear that business is slow in the collision repair industry, those investing in technology, equipment, and training are seeing a steady growth. In the Bodyshop Magazine 2011 Industry Outlook Survey, the majority of shop owners indicated that they expected their shops to fare better than they had in 2010. And in most cases, they did. CARSTAR reported a better sales year overall for its network locations. “The shops that are progressive are making a decent profit. Smaller shops might be struggling because it’s a big investment to upgrade technology and equipment,” says Lisa Mercanti-Ladd, assistant vice-president of marketing and client services for CARSTAR. “But it’s reinvesting back in to the business, which is important because you need to be up on the latest technology and trends to repair the newer vehicles.” For Fix Auto, all of its locations must meet a minimum requirement on equipment and all employees are encouraged to complete I-CAR certifications and two courses, which the network has made mandatory. “We’ve mandated that all locations take the I-CAR hybrid course and the New Technology and Trends 2011 program,” says Mike Kaplaniak, director of operations for Fix Auto. “The hybrid course is important because there are more of these cars on the road now and we want to make sure that all our locations are capable of fixing them. The technology and trends course provides a good perspective on all the new technology and vehicles.”

Mike Bryan from the Canadian Collision Industry Forum (CCIF) says that investing in training and the latest technology is vital for shops to succeed in today’s market, and it will help attract a younger workforce—a major issue for bodyshops across the country. Bergen’s Autobody Centre, a Regina, Sask.-based independent, claimed 2011 has been profitable. “It wasn’t just busy through the winter; it’s been busy year-round,” says Jonathon Bergen, manager of the Regina shop. “We’re always upgrading something and all of our guys take I-CAR courses. And if they want to go to school, we’ll help them with that.” Bergen’s recently invested in a new paint booth and a frame machine. “What worries me is the lack of young people. Other trades pay a lot more, so it’s tough to find young men and women to go to school for autobody,” says Bergen. According to Bryan, business in the west is booming, but there are two factors that must be considered. In western Canada, there are fewer shops and a tighter capacity for labour. The population is growing in Saskatchewan and Alberta, but the skilled workers are going to the oil fields, rather than the autobody trade. Regardless of business conditions, it’s essential to have a progressive shop with the latest technology and equipment. It will keep business flowing though the bay door, but it will also make the trade more appealing to the new generation of workers who are looking for challenging careers.

New Plasma Cutters Maximize Power, Precision and Portability

Resistance Spot Welder The new Elektron Multispot MI-100control T squeeze-type resistance spot welder features the industry’s lightest transformer pliers, longest lightweight cables and highest welding current, enabling technicians to properly spot weld high-strength steels, even in hard-to-reach areas, without sacrificing comfort. Standard equipment includes the MTX-4900 high-performance transformer pliers that are 25% lighter and 40% smaller than any other trans-gun pliers available. These X-pliers provide greater access to more repair areas on a vehicle than bulky C-pliers. The MI-100control T also comes equipped with lightweight 18foot cables instead of typical eight-foot cables. These design features combine to provide a more ergonomic welding solution, so technicians can work more efficiently. Chief Automotive Technologies www.chiefautomotive.com

SMART CARS, SMART MONEY Okay, here’s where I come clean: I have spent more than two decades in the traditional aftermarket. And one thing about the hard-parts aftermarket is that it has the luxury of time. That part of the business worries very little about what is rolling off the line today or tomorrow. In fact, the time to react to changes in vehicle technology, at least in any meaningful sales volume terms, is measured in years. This, of course, is dramatically different from the collision industry, as you well know; the lag between the showroom and your waiting room can be measured, quite literally, in minutes. (I remember years ago when my own loving sister’s new car had its nose chopped off by a police cruiser as she was leaving the dealership parking lot.) While the impact of such “crashes” (pardon the pun) is an unrelenting need to stay current on technology and repair practices, the highly variable nature of the business that it produces also requires much agility on the part of those who work in it and those who supply it. While those of us who enjoy driving aren’t thrilled at the way that technology intervenes in the driving experience—just try to throw a car with stability control sideways into a corner; you can’t—but I don’t think there is a single one of us driving enthusiasts who won’t admit that technology hasn’t kept his butt out of the weeds at least once. Of course there are limits to how much technology can save us from ourselves, but lane departure warning systems, blind spot alerts, and frontal crash avoidance systems that can stop a car without any intervention from the driver whatsoever will absolutely reduce accident rates going forward. We have already been seeing it for some time. In raw numbers, U.S. accidents have dropped about 10% between 1990 and 2009, despite the rise in vehicle population. In terms of fatal accident rates per miles driven, it’s about half of what it was twenty years ago. Canadian stats reflect similar trends. Bad weather may cause a bump in all collisions from year to year, but there is no escaping the overall downward trend. Even touchup jobs are at risk now that automated parking systems can make parking by feel a thing of the past. The combined effect of all this technology is to keep more cars out of your shop, either by keeping them out of collisions or by making them so expensive to fix that they head straight to the recycler. What it all means, frankly, is that every shop large and small will have to get more adept at capturing business, leaner in how they repair what they do get, and become absolute experts at fixing the latest rolling technology on our roads. The beauty of it all is that none of this necessarily points to a desperate need to get larger. In fact, keeping a volume-based shop fed may be nearly impossible in all but the largest urban centres. And perhaps it might just be the smaller, well-trained and well-equipped shops with lower overhead that will thrive in the future as collision rates decline. In my estimation, there will be a lot more hub-and-spoke repair network structure— smaller satellite shops in local communities for the majority of repairs; central, larger shops with the expensive heavy metal; and specialized jigs for the low-volume, highticket repairs. We already see some of that in how some automakers are certifying shops, but I expect we’ll see a lot more of it, with the networks and with arrangements struck among independents. It is going to require everyone to very smart about where they invest their dollars. This will always be the business of fixing cars, but how we do it will make this industry look a whole lot different than it does today.
