Every map tells a story Maps aren’t just about getting from place to place – though that is useful! Every map tells a story of how and why these places got there to begin with. Shrinking a country A map is a picture of a place, but it’s not just a picture. It’s a tool that can help you to understand a place, and find your way around it. Mapmakers use special tricks to make maps useful tools. The first trick is shrinking a huge place to make a small map. Maps are much smaller than the areas they show. The scale bar helps you compare the map with the real place. It tells you how big the place really is. To understand maps, you need to know about scales – but not the type you’d find on these sea monsters!
