Your guide to UK education
Preschool (Ages 3-5)
Children are taught the Early Years Foundation Stage at nursery school, preschool and in reception year. Many parents buy learning books to help and encourage their child to write, read and count.

Primary (Ages 5-11)
From Year 1, children are taught the Primary National Curriculum. In Year 1, children take a Phonics Screening Check. At the end of Year 6, they sit SATs in maths and reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and spelling. In Year 4, children take a Multiplication Tables Check. Many parents will buy practice books to prepare for the tests.

During the holidays, parents buy activity books to keep little ones practising while they are off school.

11+
In counties with grammar schools, many children will sit an 11+ exam in the autumn of Year 6. Parents start to prepare their children in the January of Year 5 or even earlier to ensure they are fully prepared for the test and compete for a place.

Secondary (Ages 11-18)
18 – 20
The first three years of secondary school are used to prepare the ground for GCSEs in the two years that follow Key Stage 3. Children can sit GCSE 9-1 exams in Year 10 and Year 11, depending on the school. Children that go on to study at A level sit exams in Years 12 and 13. Many parents and students will buy revision guides and practice papers to prepare for exams.
