When adding a two-digit number to a two-digit number, increase (or reduce) one number by a certain amount to a ‘friendly’ tens, and then work out the extra that must be added or subtracted to the other number, so that the sum remains the same. For example, to calculate 53 + 19 more easily, take 1 from 53 (to make 52) and add it to 19 (to make 20).
