Gorillas are the largest of the great apes. Males can weigh as much as 220 kilograms in the wild.

When I look into a gorilla’s eyes, I feel a connection.

Gorillas fall into a group of primates called great apes. The group includes chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans. Great apes and humans have a common ancestor who lived long ago.

About five to eight million years ago, scientists think humans and apes began to change into different forms. Today, humans and gorillas still have many things in common, like having similar bodies.
