1.2 Lowest common multiple and highest common factor

Did you know?

The lowest common multiple (LCM) of two or more whole numbers is the lowest multiple shared by the numbers.

For example, 4 and 5 have common multiples of 20, 40, 60, and so on. The lowest common multiple of 4 and 5 is 20.

A factor of a number is sometimes called a divisor.

The highest common factor is sometimes called the greatest common divisor (GCD).

The highest common factor (HCF) of two or more whole numbers is the highest factor shared by the numbers.

For example, 16 and 24 have common factors 1, 2, 4 and 8.

The highest common factor of 16 and 24 is 8.

A product is the result of multiplying two or more numbers.

For example, the product of 2 and 3 is 6.

Worked example 2 a) Find the lowest common multiple of 6 and 10. b) Find the highest common factor of 18 and 27. a) 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 …

Write a list of multiples of 6, and a list of multiples of 10.

10, 20, 30, 40, 50 …

Continue writing multiples until Lowest common multiple = 30 you find the smallest number that is in both lists. This is the lowest common multiple.

b) 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18 27: 1, 3, 9, 27 Highest common factor = 9

Write all the factors of 18 and all the factors of 27. The largest number that appears in both lists is the highest common factor.
