Teach and practise: Phase 3 and 4 read new words Notes Teach: New word

• For each word: ◦ Ask the children to sound-talk each grapheme and then blend to read the word aloud. ◦ Point to each grapheme and then sweep beneath the word to signal blending. ◦ Read the word together. ◦ Give a contextualising sentence or definition for the word, if needed. Use the example definitions and sentences on the weekly grid, if needed.

• Use the sound button side of the word cards because these are new words for the children. • Use minimal language to ensure the children can focus on the reading of the words. • Pointing to the digraphs should be pacey. • When reading the words, ensure lots of practice by asking all the children, then individuals/rows of children, and then all the children again, to read the words.

• Shufﬂe the cards. • Tell the children to read the words on the cards without sounding out. • Show each card and sweep beneath the word to signal blending. • Ensure there is enough time for the children to read each word. • Repeat.

• Watch the children carefully to ensure they are all blending in their heads. (Children will often mouth the sounds to themselves at this stage.) • Encourage the children to indicate – with a silent gesture (e.g. nodding their head, thumbs up) – when they are ready to blend.

Quick review

Teach and practise: Read a tricky word • Show the tricky word on a card. • Read the decodable parts of the word. Point to the ‘tricky bit’ and tell the children the sound that this grapheme makes. • Model reading the word. • Ask the children to read the word a few times independently.

Read 2: Prosody

• Model reading each page with expression to the children. After you have read each page, ask the children to have a go at reading with expression. • On page 13, show the children how you read with expression. Discuss how the children are saying the sentence. (they are yelling)

Read 3: Comprehension

• Look at pages 14 and 15 together. Ask the children to retell the story using the pictures. • For every question ask the children how they know the answer. Ask: • What were the children doing before the power went off? (watching TV) • What do the children do whilst the power is off? (look for shadow shapes and listen to a story) • What do the children think of Mum’s story? (that it is funny) • What does the word howl mean on page 11? (laugh) • Why do you think the children ask for the lights to be turned back off on page 13? (because they were having so much fun with the power off) • What would you do in a power cut? (e.g. look for shadow shapes, tell stories, tell jokes, play a game)

Fluency Little Wandle Fluency is for children who have completed Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised or another systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) programme and are secure at reading that programme's final level of books. Little Wandle's 'by schools for schools' approach means that teachers have been integral to the development of Little Wandle Fluency. Little Wandle Fluency aims for children to become readers who can read with prosody and understanding. It supports them to lift meaning from the text, build their identity as a reader and develop a lifelong love of reading. Little Wandle Fluency teaches all aspects of reading using vibrant, diverse and engaging chapter books created by contemporary authors and illustrators. Each book has been carefully devised to support children to become confident, fluent and motivated readers as they move through Years 2–4 and beyond.

The importance of reading fluency The DfE reading framework identifies the importance of explicitly teaching fluency to ensure that children are reading with accuracy, automaticity, understanding and expression. Children should practise reading with a wide range of books. Research shows that students who develop strong reading fluency in their early years are more likely to excel in school and maintain higher levels of confidence and wellbeing. Reading fluently also improves children’s comprehension, vocabulary, empathy and critical thinking skills.

The Little Wandle Fluency programme consists of 15 Fluency Levels for children to work their way through, with chapter books ranging from 80 pages (Levels 1 to 5), 96 pages (Levels 6–10), to 112 pages (Levels 11 to 15). Each book contains six chapters of

equal length, designed so that every chapter takes 10 minutes to read aloud. As children progress, the language becomes more sophisticated, and the word count increases, requiring a gradual improvement in reading speed from 60 to 150 words per minute.

The Pōhutu Geyser in Rotorua is spectacular – it can erupt to a height of 30 metres, spurting hot spring water up into the sky up to 20 times a day. The eggy smell of the heated water fills the air!

When you drive into Rotorua, New Zealand, it smells like rotten eggs! This is because there are lots of hot springs and geysers. The hot water bubbles up from underground and it has lots of smelly sulphur in it. We call this “geothermal activity”.

Pencil grip Children need to learn how to hold their pencil correctly from the outset, as grip affects the flow, speed and overall quality of handwriting. Without a proper grip, children’s hands can tire more quickly, their writing can become harder to read and they may struggle to write for extended periods – an essential skill as they progress through school. Young children need to develop the muscles in their hands to build the strength required for a proper pencil grip. For some, this will take longer and require additional practice. Children initially start to hold the pencil within their fist (age 1–1.5 years), progress to holding the pencil shaft with all their fingers (2–3 years) and then move on to a static, then dynamic tripod grasp. Children typically progress through a series of grasp patterns before developing a tripod grip. Tripod grip The tripod grip is typically the easiest for children to learn. It can be modelled by showing how to pinch the pencil between the ball of the thumb and index finger – about a finger’s width from the pencil tip – while resting the middle finger underneath for support, and the other fingers tucked into the hand. Using a small sticker to mark the correct grip position can be a helpful visual aid. The ideal location of the fingers is about 3cm from the pencil tip. For children who find pencil grip challenging, timely intervention and additional practice are essential to prevent the development of incorrect habits. Pencils are an ideal tool for introducing letter formation as they provide a smooth glide across the page helping young children develop control during the complex process of learning to write. Some children may beneﬁt from using thicker, triangular pencils to support the development of a tripod grip.

However, the size of the pencil should be appropriate for the child’s hand. While some children may initially ﬁnd a chunkier pencil easier to grip, as they develop pencil control, it’s important to ensure the pencil is not too large, as this can hinder comfort and proper grip development.

There are pencil grips commercially available that promote a good tripod position. An elastic band placed at the tip of the pencil will prevent the ﬁngers from slipping forwards onto the point.
