Development, trade and aid 3

Where communities are isolated or run down and struggling to support people fi nancially, local people may look for ways to boost the economy. Development of a region is often achieved through trade and tourism – but what can be the cost of this? In this chapter, you will be exploring the topic of ‘Development, trade and aid’, thinking about the following issues: • Why might people support or object to a development near where they live? • Are National Parks a good way of developing an area sustainably? • Should tourists be limited or even banned from visiting well-known beauty spots? • Is tourism the best route to sustainable development? You will be developing a range of research, analysis and evaluation skills: 3.1 Identifying ideas from different perspectives Sample Pages 3.2 Explaining graphical and numerical data 3.3 Evaluating the credibility of sources 3.4 Evaluating the effectiveness of an argument 3.5 Applying what you have learned Your fi nal task will be to prepare for and participate in a debate arguing for or against a local development.
