A New Neighbourhood From Whare Tupu
Te Māra, the garden, a collection of inspiring architectural homes, designed to nurture life.
Te Māra is a new project from Whare Tupu, a partnership between Avant Group and Te Ākitai Waiohua. This relationship began in 2015 with the aim of creating neighbourhoods that are not only ‘liveable’ but designed to nurture life, creating neighbourhoods that tell the stories of their place. Each project plays a part in growing a better future for how we live in Auckland. Puketāpapa, Mt Roskill was once a hilltop pa of Waiohua, used as a garden settlement for growing kai such as kumara and hue (gourd). This is where the connection to the name Puketāpapa is said to have come from, with ‘puke’, meaning hill and ‘tāpapa’, preparing the soil. The conception of Te Māra (the garden) was guided by the history and significance of Puketāpapa, a record of stories and culture. It is important that we treat Puketāpapa in a respectful manner, as a taonga to Te Ākitai Waiohua and an integral part to the identity of the Mt Roskill community.
"We are intensely interested in community and place making. We are focused on providing well designed homes that are practical, beautiful and respect and celebrate the history of the area."
– Ken, Crosson Architects
Building on the history of the māra kai (food garden) and the coming together of communities – Te Māra has been designed to foster close knit neighbourhoods that will grow and strengthen under the new Roskill South development, which will provide upgraded roading, pedestrian links, parkland and public transport, all to support a growing urban-fringe community. Visit Te Māra. Imagine planting a seed here and growing your future in Puketāpapa, Mt Roskill. Climb the maunga and take in the views from the summit, looking out across the Auckland isthmus. Share a new home with those you love and connect with neighbours on the same journey as you.

Your Home: Designed To Nurture As a meticulously planned masterplan development, Te Māra will offer a level of lifestyle living that will meet your every need.
Designed by the renowned and awardwinning Ken Crosson and his team at Crosson Architects, these homes have been designed to provide a warm, safe and comfortable space for you and your family to call your own. The overall development has been given the theme of Te Māra, 'the garden'. Reference to this cultural theme is apparent in the maintained visual connection to the surrounding maunga, the architectural design of each site and home, and the diverse planting designs, which provide suitable habitats for indigenous flora and fauna. The development uses trusted low maintenance solid masonry materials, softened with the integration of various planting species, creating a garden development perfect for busy families and individuals. Choose between two, three and four bedroom homes. With a strong sense of community, quality building, and a sophisticated design aesthetic, Te Māra raises the standard for terraced housing.
"Avant are passionate about transforming neighbourhoods – it's what excites us the most. A masterplan can make a great difference to how communities are created, the way people live, how they perceive their environment and how they interact with their street. Being mana whenua led means we strive to bring authenticity to developments and care about the long-term future of the project and the people who live there. It determines everything we do across urban design, architecture, building materials and landscaping, and goes beyond building four walls – creating communities and neighbourhoods that purchasers will love and share passion for."
– Mat, Avant Group

How To Start A Home Garden Gardening at home can be a great way to save money, and an opportunity to connect with nature. You’ll also find that the flavour and texture of homegrown produce is even better than what you're used to finding at the grocery store!
1 Choosing a spot No matter where you put your garden, or what you decide to plant, there are two basic requirements for best success: water and light. Plenty of sunlight is a must! Keep an eye on your backyard for a day and see how the sun travels, sometimes the sun-soaked spots we see when we get home may not be in the sun all day. Remember to water your seedlings more frequently while they are establishing their roots and building their home.
2 Start small A good size for a beginner’s vegetable garden is 2x2m with a depth of soil around 30-40cm. Select a small range of vegetables to start out and plant a few of each. There are a number of tutorials online of how to make a raised garden, but planting in containers is also a good way to start out, and all you need is a sunny spot in your backyard.
3 An 'intensive' layout Small home gardens generally use a method called 'intensive cropping'. This is made up of 2-3 plants of the same species close together in a bed, meaning they can support each other as they grow (strength in numbers). Intensive cropping creates a more productive garden that is easier to manage. Tip of the day – Ensure you can access all your plants from the edge of the garden bed so that you don't need to step over the soil.
4 Rich soil is pure gold For the best harvest, your garden needs the best soil. Luckily for us, Tāmaki Makaurau has some of the best growing soil in the country: it’s easy to dig and drains well. Even so, all soil can be improved over time by mixing compost into it. Compost helps balance the consistency of different soils, helping to retain moisture and nutrients for plants to use. Try composting in your backyard – it's a great use of food scraps, or if you want to start small, egg shells and coffee grinds provide great nutrients when put straight into the soil.
Remember to grow the food that you love to eat! 27

Planting at Te Māra Below is just a small selection of what will shape the landscape at Te Māra. The planting aims to tell the stories of Puketāpapa as told by Te Ākitai Waiohua. We want to promote bird life and provide pollen for bees to help restore balance to the land, while suggesting food and herbs that you can introduce into your own garden.
Native stories
Nurturing communities
Tī Kōuka Commonly known as the cabbage tree, Tī Kōuka has long been used by Māori as tools and food. The fibres within its stem are strong, durable and water resistant making them perfect for fishing line, footwear and kete. The roots and stems could also be cooked and eaten, with similar nutrients to kumara.
Citrus Citrus fruits grow well in the warm sun and volcanic soil of Tāmaki Makaurau. Lemons begin to fruit in summer with the tree full of ripe fruit early autumn ready to be made into a curd or added into a G&T.
Pūriri A great tree that is said to live for over 2000 years. The Pūriri has a deep connection with the history of Māori in New Zealand. After the death of a person with high mana such as a chief, their bones would be entombed in the hollow of the trunk. Nīkau The southern-most growing palm tree in the world, the Nīkau is iconic for New Zealand. It's nectar rich flowers is an important food source for insects and birds. Its bright red berries are a favourite for the Kererū while immature flowers can even be harvested and cooked like cauliflower for our consumption.
Feijoa A favourite in Aotearoa, feijoa trees fruit between March to May with an abundance like few other. The soft green fruit make for perfect chutneys, jams and even wine. Rosemary An aromatic herb that grows in a dense bush. The neighbourhood rosemary plants will be well used every Sunday. Pair with some garlic and red meat, life doesn't get much better. Kawakawa A natural anti-inflammatory that has been used by the Māori for generations and is now a favourite in the realm of natural healthcare. Kawakawa leaves are bitter when eaten but when boiled in water, create an aromatic tea.
Feeding the Bees Bees are a vital part of our ecosystem and populations are declining rapidly. Each garden plan should include food for our little allies. Plants like Tī Kōuka (cabbage trees), Rosemary and the mighty Pūriri are great food sources that can help restore healthy populations.

Healing Benefits
Kawakawa
Ginger sliced
Kawakawa has been used in traditional rongoā Māori (Māori medicine) for centuries. The leaves were traditionally used to brew herbal remedies or concoctions, and treat skin abrasions and ailments by turning it into a poultice and applying topically. There are also stories of people chewing on the leaves to cure toothaches. It is an incredible plant with medicinal and healing abilities and antimicrobial and analgesic properties.
Lemon Slice of lemon
Lemon is a great source of Vitamin C, which is an important vitamin for supporting the immune system and helping protect cells from free radical damage, reducing the risk of the disease. It also contains a high amount of soluble dietary fibre, which aids in healthy digestion.
Ginger Ginger root is well-known for its warming properties and for supporting healthy circulation, assumed to be due to its mild spice. It is also used as a natural alternative to aid digestion, ease nausea, and help fight the flu and common cold.
Method
Mint
Add all ingredients to a pot with 2 cups of water. Cover, bring to the boil then simmer on low heat for 15 mins.
Mint is full of anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties, making it excellent for managing blood sugar levels and treating skin conditions. The active oil, menthol, gives mint a cooling effect, which acts as a great relief for indigestion and chest congestion. Mint is also an essential part of aromatherapy, used to relieve stress and rejuvenate the mind with it's refreshing and calming natural aroma.
