Center for Global Education Gettysburg College offers study abroad programs all over the world as well as domestic programs within the United States. Students from every major are able to take advantage of these programs.

Whether students choose to explore a discipline from a cross-cultural perspective, participate in an internship, work towards foreign language proficiency, or conduct field-based independent research, their work off campus will be counted towards a Gettysburg degree.

Center for Public Service The Center for Public Service challenges students to think critically and act compassionately through six program areas, carried out in partnership with other students, community members, faculty, and staff.

Student Leadership: Program coordinators organize action for social justice on campus and in the community.

Dialogue: Explore race and gender in safe, respectful, frank, and humorous spaces to dismantle myths, expose privilege, and confront internalized messages.

Reflective Service: Co-curricular opportunities for meaningful service.

Community-Based Learning: Integration of traditional classroom learning with handson experiences, challenging students to link academic theories with community realities.

Computers New Computer Purchases

In general, a suitable computer purchase should include a speedy CPU, plenty of memory, a high-capacity hard drive (SSD preferred), Wi-Fi capability (802.11g/n/ac) and/or the ability to physically connect to a wired Ethernet connection, and a comfortable screen size.

Carefully consider important options such as extended warranties on the computer itself, accidental damage protection when offered, an extended battery warranty, and anti-virus/antimalware software. We support all recent versions of Windows and Mac OS. Computer hardware needed to run most new operating systems is also adequate to run most of the typical software students will encounter while at Gettysburg. If you have special software needs, you may wish to discuss your requirements with your vendor.

Do not purchase Microsoft Office. Gettysburg students can get Office 365 for free. Visit G-Tech for more information.

G-Tech Computer Service: Students Helping Students

G-Tech is a student-staffed and IT-supported group that helps Gettysburg College students with their personal computers and devices. Techs help students connect to the network, set up email, remove spyware and viruses, configure cell phones and entertainment devices, resolve hardware issues, and troubleshoot in general. G-Tech is the venue where students can receive computer and technical support.

Counseling and Health Counseling Services

Counseling Services provides confidential, short-term services for Gettysburg students who are on campus while classes are in session.

Services include individual and group counseling, psychiatry for newly emerging conditions, consultation, and psychoeducation. Appointments may be scheduled by phone or in person.

In the case of remote learning due to COVID-19, services are limited by state-bystate restrictions. Counseling Services monitors these state regulations carefully. When possible, therapy is offered to students in other states via a HIPAA-compliant video platform. For those states in which Counseling Services cannot practice therapy remotely, remote consultation is available to help students locate local resources. Contact Counseling Services to learn how the staff can best help!

Students seek counseling for a variety of reasons, including homesickness, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, eating problems, and identity issues. Counseling Services asks that students (rather than parents) call to set up appointments.

Counseling Services cannot share information with parents or others without students’ consent; however, the staff welcomes calls from parents who want to share information about their students or consult about available services on and off campus.

Health Services

Medicat is Health Services’ electronic health record system and includes access to a patient portal for all students, post visit education, and insurance-ready copies of students’ visits for reimbursement.

Staffed by nurse practitioners and other skilled health professionals, the office offers diagnosis and treatment of acute conditions, monitors and manages chronic disorders, and provides other services, including stress management, sexual health services, health maintenance/ wellness services, and immunizations.

Dining Services Our award-winning Dining Services offers a variety of dining options to meet the varied needs of all our students.

All first-year students are required to enroll in the Unlimited Access meal plan. Students paying with Dining Dollars associated with a meal plan receive a discount at all Dining outlets.

Students who have special dietary needs associated with a medical condition or food allergies are urged to contact Dining Services for assistance. Nutrition and wellness are top priorities for Dining Services. Our menu standards include vegetarian and vegan items,

low-fat dairy products, lean cuts of meat, bountiful salad bars, and a fruit and yogurt bar.

Sustainability is another priority for Dining Services. We use locally grown and processed foods whenever possible, reduce our trash by recycling, and produce sterile compost from post-consumer waste.

Financial Aid Gettysburg College is committed to working with students and their families to ensure that the ability to pay does not become an obstacle to a Gettysburg education.

Need-based financial aid is awarded on an annual basis and families must submit the FAFSA each spring. Academic merit scholarships and music talent scholarships are awarded when students are admitted to Gettysburg.

Garthwait Leadership Center The Garthwait Leadership Center (GLC) serves as a collaborative hub for leadership development, group development, and outdoor leadership, helping students and young alumni recognize their potential for leadership and their responsibility to serve.

GLC participants develop many leadership skills from peer leadership mentors, trained leadership coaches, an individualized leadership certificate program, a student leadership summit, and an emerging leadership retreat.

The GLC also serves more than 30 groups and teams annually through customized workshops.

The GLC supports the Gettysburg Recreational Adventure Board (GRAB), a group of student facilitators who lead a variety of outdoor leadership experiences. GRAB student leaders also facilitate Ascent, a pre-orientation program for incoming students that combines elements of service, leadership, and wilderness education.

Greek Life Gettysburg College is home to 18 fraternities and sororities with a total membership of more than 800 students.

Fraternities and sororities at Gettysburg College date back to 1855. The Greek community at Gettysburg College is based on community service, high academic standards, leadership development, campus involvement, career preparation and networking, and lifelong friendships.

The Office of Student Activities & Greek Life serves as a liaison among the collegiate members, parents, alumni, international

organizations, and Gettysburg College to provide educational programs, services, and resources toward the holistic growth of the Greek community. The office challenges the chapters to live by their values and ideals and to contribute positively to the campus and local communities. Students are first eligible to join in the fall of their sophomore year.

Multicultural Engagement The Office of Multicultural Engagement provides programming and support for underrepresented, first-generation, and international students studying at Gettysburg College. The department is dedicated to raising awareness and celebrating cultural pluralism on campus.

The professional staff provides academic, social, and personal enrichment services for people of various backgrounds. Students can expect to receive student-centered attention and holistic advising that addresses individual needs and interests.

Public Safety The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is committed to providing high-quality, continuously improving Community Service Oriented Patrolling (CSOP/safety and security services).

To be successful in providing the highest degree of public safety services on the campus, it is important that community members follow good safety practices and understand that safety is the responsibility of all community members, not just those charged with enforcing the laws, policies, and rules.

Community members should use the escort service, lock valuables, and report suspicious/ criminal activities. The Department of Public Safety takes a leadership role in this area, including providing educational programs on campus safety, preventative patrols, incident investigation and crime reporting, fire safety and prevention, crime prevention, and community service oriented patrolling (CSOP).

CSOP is a paradigm that views safety and security operations as a proactive, collaborative, and all-inclusive process. Religious & Spiritual Life The Center for Religious & Spiritual Life is directed by the Rev. Dr. Kristin Johnston Largen, an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (Gettysburg is a college of the ELCA). She serves as the Associate Dean for Religious and Spiritual Life/College Chaplain.

The Center has an explicit ecumenical and interfaith focus, and seeks to support the intellectual, spiritual, and moral formation of all students at Gettysburg College. The Center is in a newly renovated house with an interfaith prayer space, a kosher-style kitchen, and a wudu station, in addition to spaces for meetings, discussions, and meals.

The Center has three major areas of emphasis: hospitality, education, and interfaith friendship.

Through a variety of offerings and events, including study of sacred texts, presentations, movie nights, and meals, students learn more about each other, come together to relax and be restored, and engage issues of faith, justice, and religious practice. The Center partners with many other College offices.

Multiple opportunities for worship, prayer, and meditation occur throughout the week, and a variety of religious holiday celebrations from many different faith traditions take place throughout the year.

Residential & First-Year Programs The Office of Residential & First-Year Programs (RFYP) strives to create a living experience that facilitates the personal growth and development of each student.

The staff works to foster an environment that promotes connections between coursework and involvement outside the classroom through relationship development and community building.

The residential program seeks to provide facilities that enable students to pursue educational goals in a challenging, supportive, and safe environment. RFYP also works to accommodate housing needs due to medical requirements (including air conditioning) — such requests can be made through the Office of Academic Advising.

First-Year Halls

First-year students are assigned to housing based on their First-Year Seminar. All first-year students live in either the East or West Quads.

The Student Accounts Office facilitates the tuition billing process and the collection of payments for student account balances.

In addition to tuition, room, and meals, several other offices on campus provide services to students that have a cost associated with them.

Transportation Transportation Services provides students and current parents with transportation to and from mass transit locations.

All requests for services must be made as far ahead of time as possible. Requests MUST be made no fewer than 3 business days (not including weekends) before departures and/or arrivals. All transportation requests for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday MUST be made by Tuesday of that week.

Those requesting any transportation service may go to the Shuttle Service link on the Transportation Services website. Students can also schedule travel reservations via myShuttle, on the Current Students webpage. Students may also schedule online for immediate family members. Requests made after the deadline may not be accommodated. There are no refunds for trips cancelled less than 24 hours prior to a scheduled reservation.

Civil War Institute

The Civil War Institute (CWI) brings together Gettysburg College students, general audiences, and scholars in an ongoing dialogue about the history of the Civil War era through public programming, student internship and fellowship programs, digital scholarship, teaching, curriculum management, and academic research. The college’s minors in Civil War Era Studies (CWES) and Public History are administered out of CWI. The Majestic Theater

In addition to being the home for the Sunderman Conservatory of Music student ensemble rehearsals and performances, the Majestic offers a diverse professional line-up of about 75 live performances annually, including Broadway shows, popular music, dance, comedy, children’s theater, and community events—in addition to 1,400 showings of first run, independent films, summer classic films, and HD telecasts of the Metropolitan Opera, the National Theater of London, and the Bolshoi Ballet.

Originally built by Gettysburg College alumnus Henry Scharf in 1925 for vaudeville and silent films, the Majestic Theater has been in continuous operation since its construction with the exception of two occasions. The first was in 2004–2005 when it underwent a $16.5 million renovation and expansion, transforming the Majestic into the world-class performing arts center it is today. The second instance was this past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Majestic features an 800-seat historic theater, two digital cinemas, an art gallery, cafe, and backstage production facility.

Students also find abundant opportunities for performance in a variety of standard and innovative ensembles. They may broaden their musical experiences in bands, symphony orchestra, opera, and choirs, and challenge their musicianship in chamber ensembles ranging from string quartet and wind quintets to jazz and gamelan.

Family Ambassador Opportunities

Gettysburg College has a long tradition of promoting parent engagement, and we hope that you, too, will be actively involved in the College’s programs. The following opportunities are coordinated by the Parent Relations program.

Parents Leadership Council The Parents Leadership Council (PLC) comprises Gettysburg College’s most committed parents who value and provide resources that sustain and enhance topnotch academic and co-curricular programs while strengthening the College’s reputation.

Members are leaders in philanthropic support, ambassadorship, and a number of activities that make a beneficial difference for Gettysburg College students.

Opening Day Welcome Team This group of parents greets the incoming families, shares information, gives directions, answers questions, and enjoys lunch with one another.

Family Weekend Advisory Council The Family Weekend Advisory Council (FWAC) is a group of parents who offer input about Family Weekend programming to College administrators as they plan this annual event. FWAC members provide feedback via email during the Family Weekend planning process and act as greeters and assist in other volunteer roles during Family Weekend.

Other ways that you can directly participate in the life of the College and be a Family Ambassador: • Provide your career expertise and professional connections to our students through Career Engagement programs • Assist with leadership development programs and opportunities with the Garthwait Leadership Center

• Attend Family Weekend • Stay informed and engaged by attending College events that take place in or near your hometown • Stay connected electronically by signing up for College news updates and athletic news stories • Send your student a Love Basket from Dining Services’ Spoil ’Em Long Distance program • Attend athletic events, both home and away • Show your Gettysburg pride by wearing Gettysburg garb and by displaying a Gettysburg sticker or magnet on your car, available at the Gettysburg College Bookstore We welcome your involvement!

Philanthropy Gettysburg College parents and family members, along with alumni, make gifts to the Gettysburg Fund and the Orange & Blue Club throughout the year.
