We Must Not Falter on Aid to Ukraine

Russia invaded Ukraine one year ago. The action prompted an outcry against the war in many countries, including the United States. Americans donated goods and money to assist Ukrainians amid outrage at President Vladimir Putin’s inhumanity.

However, Putin’s illegitimate war continues and does not show signs of a decrease.

Despite the numerous atrocities Russia perpetrates, Americans are becoming desensitized to the brutality of the war. We still receive updates about the status of the war daily on the news. We continue to see images of bombed cities and Ukrainians suffering, but we are distracted by national issues, such as inflation and bickering politicians.

“Our support for Ukraine will not waiver,” said President Joe Biden in a speech during his surprise visit to Ukraine on Feb. 20, 2023.

However, a New York Times article of the same day indicates, “An Associated Press – NORC [National Opinion Research Center], Center for Public Affairs Research poll last week found public support for aid to Ukraine softening, with 48 percent of Americans in favor of sending arms, down from 60 percent last May.”
