High Impact Practices SCALING INDIVIDUAL COLLEGE SUCCESSES TO STATEWIDE COMPLETION STRATEGIES
H
igh Impact Practices (HIPs) are evidence-based teaching and learning practices that have been widely tested and shown to be beneficial for college students. HIPs increase the probability of
academic success, improve graduation rates and narrow achievement gaps between racial-ethnic groups. Many HIPs require students to make their own discoveries and connections, grapple with challenging real-world questions and address complex problems – all necessary skills if students are to become engaged and effective members of their communities and the workforce. Our colleges integrate a wide range of HIPs into their courses and

Certifications validate that a student possesses the skills needed to be competitive in technology-driven work environments. Courses and degree programs prepare students to take exams that lead to industry-recognized certifications. First-Year Seminars/Experiences are required of all first-semester, full-time students. They are designed to help students deal with the transition from high school to college and improve their time management, study, research and technology skills. Honors Education provides qualified students from various academic majors with in-class and extracurricular activities that offer broader, deeper and more contextualized learning experiences. Learning Communities encourage students to take two or more classes together with the same group of students for college credit. These communities explore common topics and “big questions” through the lenses of different disciplines. Service Learning models the idea that giving “something back” through volunteer service is an important college outcome and that working with community partners is good preparation for citizenship, work and life. Study Abroad is credit-bearing, field-based, experiential learning that occurs outside the United States. Our colleges offer a strong Study Abroad program jointly administered through the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies. Technology Enhanced Learning leverages online games, multimedia, productivity applications, cloud computing, ePortfolio and mobile devices to facilitate learning and improve student performance. Undergraduate Research is a credit-bearing inquiry/investigation in which students make an original, intellectual scholarly activity or creative contribution to the discipline. Work-Based Learning provides students with direct experience in a work setting and gives them the benefit of supervision and coaching from professionals in the field. Examples of work-based learning include internships, practicums, clinicals and co-ops. 11

ormer Army Sgt. Chris Walters enlisted in the Army after graduating from Nashville’s Stratford High School. He fought in the first

Chattanooga State, located on the banks of the Tennessee River, is a comprehensive community college offering Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science degree programs and certificates, as well as a robust selection of early postsecondary opportunities for high school students. In addition to its main campus in Chattanooga, the college has instructional centers in Dayton and Kimball.
