Letter from exeCutive DireCtor

Dear Friends and Supporters, It is our pleasure to bring you the College of DuPage Foundation Annual Report. Each year, as we reflect on how the College has embraced the hopes and dreams of thousands of students, moving them and our community from the possible to the realized, fulfilling our community’s promise; we are reminded of the extraordinary impact you have made. Your generosity has rewarded students for their community service and leadership, helped overwhelmed students overcome financial challenges and finish their degrees, opened new doors of opportunity for student- veterans, and made it possible for survivors of domestic violence to reclaim their independence through higher education and entrepreneurship. In all cases, your belief in COD students encouraged them to believe in themselves— and their success moves our entire community forward!

Catherine M. Brod Vice President, Resource Development Executive Director

Inspired by the stories of our students, the Foundation has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. We are proud to share our accomplishments, financial status and outcomes with you. Whether you have been a supporter of the COD Foundation for years or are just coming to know us, we extend our sincere gratitude for choosing the COD Foundation. Your generosity is transforming lives, fueling innovation and enriching our community. Thank you! Best,

Catherine M. Brod Vice President, Resource Development Executive Director

“This scholarship meant that I would have less stress in my life and allowed me to focus on my studies.” — Katheryn Beck, scholarship recipient

we make it... rewarDing sChoLarships Mother pursues her dream career Laurie Walker remembers the date: Dec. 23, 2003. That’s the day the younger of her two sons was diagnosed with diabetes. It’s also the date that inspired Walker to change careers. In the mid-80s, Walker earned a bachelor’s in Mass Communications at Illinois State University and took summer classes at COD to get ahead in school while completing an internship. Twenty-five years later, the Aurora resident wanted to work in medicine. “Eight months after Brian’s diagnosis, I started working as a nursing assistant at the endocrinology office where my son was treated. Their physicians and nurse encouraged me to go back to school to earn my nursing degree. The nurse at my son’s endocrinology office was also the mother of a child with diabetes. That combination was invaluable to our family and me. I wanted to be able to provide that same experience to other families navigating diabetes.” So with her older son at Marquette and Brian in high school, Walker won a scholarship and earned her associate’s degree in nursing. After graduation, she landed a nursing job with DuPage Medical Group and helped launch its Pediatric Endocrinology Group. Walker said the scholarship made a big difference. “There seem to be fewer scholarships available to returning students,” said Walker. “Many scholarships are for recent high school graduates. I had to search for scholarships that were appropriate for a returning student. “I had to cut back my work hours to accommodate my classes and studies. This scholarship helped fill the gap. Plus, I was paying for my oldest son to attend college at a four-year university.” Brian is now 20 years old, working toward a bachelor’s in Environmental Health, and took a summer class at COD to get ahead in his studies. He plans to take another this summer. Like mom, like son.

The event celebrated the completion of a 14-month, $35 million renovation project of the MAC and raised over $393,200 for programs and scholarships affiliated with the Arts Center.

resourCe for exCeLLenCe Architecture Students Design Build Pavilion College of DuPage Architecture students have added their touch to the renovated campus by providing an outdoor gathering pavilion. As part of the summer Architecture 2840 Design Build class, 16 students enrolled in the course designed, built and installed the temporary pavilion just south of the Technical Education Center (TEC). The wooden structure consists of five bays that form a unique and inviting space on the west side of campus. The project was funded by a $15,000 grant through the COD Foundation’s Resource for Excellence program. A program designed foster innovation in all aspects of operation at the College of DuPage by providing seed money to test new ideas, pilot new programs or methods, conduct research, or try new services. The COD Foundation recognizes that, given the resources to proceed, all COD employees have the capacity to contribute to the improvement of instruction and support given to the students and community members served by the college. “I wanted to see what would happen in a design studio class when students needed to build what they designed,” said Mark Pearson, Associate Professor of Architecture. “It’s a valuable educational tool to simulate a real-world activity with a real-life project that includes a site and a budget.” Student Francois El-Bittar of Oakbrook Terrace said it was crucial to create something that perfectly fit into the selected site. “It was important to create something that would be entertaining and eye-catching,” he said. “We wanted to frame the views, especially the lake and the fountain.” Once the design was finalized, the students conducted a presentation for DuPage County officials. Even though a building permit wasn’t needed, Pearson felt the presentation added to the classroom experience. The students then constructed the pavilion in the TEC. After College of DuPage President Dr. Robert L. Breuder gave his approval, the students installed the pavilion. El-Bittar, who is transferring to IIT to study architecture, said the class was both fun and interactive. Student Kevin Smith of Winfield, who plans to transfer to the University of Illinois, said the course was an invaluable learning tool.

your giving options whether it is a student you want to motivate, a loved one you wish to honor or an educational program you would like to see expanded, the College of Dupage foundation is here to help. to give to College of Dupage and increase the impact public higher education has on our community, please consider the following giving options available through the College of Dupage foundation:

estaBLish an enDowment Endowments are donated funds that are invested in perpetuity. Principal-generated earnings fulfill the scholarship fund’s charitable intent as established by the donor when the gift is made. If you are eager to see your gift impact lives now and in the future, establishing an endowment is a wise choice. make a gift in honor or in memory of someone To make your gift, call (630) 942-2462, send your gift (check or money order made payable to the COD Foundation) to COD Foundation, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 or donate online at www.cod.edu/foundation. sponsor, partiCipate in or voLunteer for our upComing events MAC Motown, September 12, 2015 Laps with the Chaps Sunset 5K, September 26, 2015 gifts of stoCks anD BonDs Stocks, bonds or mutual funds that have increased in value and have been held for more than one year are one of the most popular assets used for charitable giving. By making a gift of appreciated assets, you can avoid paying capital gains tax that would otherwise be due if you sold these assets and they are tax deductible for the full fair market value when the gift is made. If you own securities that have lost value, you can sell the stock, take a capital loss deduction, and make a gift to the Foundation.

gifts of insuranCe Donors may give new or existing policies to the Foundation. If the Foundation is the owner of the policy, the donor may make gifts that are tax deductible to the Foundation for the purposes of paying the premiums. gifts of retirement assets Most people do not use off of their retirement assets during their lifetime. A gift of retirement assets, from your IRA, 401k, 403b, pension or other tax deferred plan, could make an excellent way to give back thanks to special tax considerations. Retirement plan beneficiary designations can be changed at any time by contacting your investment manager, or by logging into your retirement account and changing the beneficiary and gift percentage online. gifts in kinD Gifts in kind are non-cash contributions of goods or services. COD receives a variety of in-kind gifts which include artwork, supplies, cars, uniforms, computer hardware and more. To determine if your donation qualifies, please contact us today. Car Donation Do you have an old or unneeded car, truck, boat or other vehicle sitting in your driveway, or taking up space in your garage? Consider donating it the Foundation. To learn how to donate your vehicle, please contact foundation@cod.edu.

All gifts made through the College of DuPage Foundation are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Pledges may be paid in installments. College of DuPage faculty and staff may also take advantage of payroll deduction.
