IN THE NEWS Octagon Show Will Feature Work by CoD Faculty, Students, Alumni

Twelve College of Design faculty, students and alumni are among 58 artists from eight states whose work has been selected for the 44th National Clay, Fiber, Paper, Glass, Metal, Wood Exhibition, Jan. 27 through April 7 at the Octagon Center for the Arts in Ames. Work by ISA Associate Professor Barbara Walton in Solo Show

A solo exhibition of work by Barbara Walton, an associate professor of integrated studio arts in the College of Design, also will be on display Jan. 27 through April 7 in the Community Gallery at the Octagon Center for the Arts. “Wax On, Wax Off: Encaustic Paintings by Barbara Walton” features paintings that explore the additive and subtractive properties of beeswax, microcrystalline wax and soy wax mixed with pigment. The show opens in a joint reception with the Octagon’s 44th National Clay, Fiber, Paper, Glass, Metal, Wood Exhibition (see prior announcement) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27.

DID YOU KNOW? Rachel Lopez Hohenshell is New Bachelor of Design Adviser

Rachel Lopez Hohenshell joined the College of Design staff on Jan. 9 as our new interdisciplinary, graduate and articulation coordinator. She will recruit and advise Bachelor of Design majors and provide guidance and support to graduate students as well as recruiting and administrative support to all of the graduate programs in the College of Design. In addition, she will initiate and develop articulation agreements with community colleges in Iowa and neighboring states for the design, community and regional planning, landscape architecture, and possibly integrated studio arts programs. Lopez Hohenshell previously was an instructor in the ISU English department. She received a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing and environment with an emphasis in urban studies from Iowa State in May 2011. Habitat for Humanity Student Competition Charrette

The Design Across Boundaries student organization will host a design charrette from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, to generate ideas for the Habitat for Humanity “Sustainable Home” competition sponsored by H4H and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Lunch will be provided! Students from all disciplines are invited to participate, and you can continue working on your designs throughout the semester if interested. The charrette will be in the Beckman Forum, lower level of the King Pavilion. Design Across Boundaries meets at 12 p.m. every Wednesday in the Hansen Exchange, upper level, King Pavilion.
