Guiding Paths Forward

A Message from...

Our Board Chair, Kristen Baird Adams Our President & CEO, Dr. Michele Scott Taylor and

In 2025, that included the execution of a sound CEO transition plan and continued work by our board of directors and College Now leadership and staff to advance key strategic priorities that continue to position the organization for longterm impact.

It is with enormous pride and gratitude that we share College Now’s 2024-25 annual report. At a time of unprecedented changes in higher education — from affordability pressures and evolving workforce demands to uncertainty in public funding — the relevancy, impact and reach of our work has never been more important or apparent.

Amidst a number of headwinds, College Now has remained a steady and trusted partner for students, families, educators, employers and policymakers across Greater Cleveland and beyond. That stability is not accidental.

It is the result of strong leadership, disciplined strategy and an unwavering commitment to student success.

In 2025, that included the execution of a sound CEO transition plan and continued work by our board of directors and College Now leadership and staff to advance key strategic priorities that continue to position the organization for long-term impact.

Together, we strengthened our governance and operational and financial discipline, refreshed our brand and digital presence and elevated our voice as an advocate for higher education access and success at the local, state and federal levels.

Most importantly, we remained focused on outcomes. College Now continues to meet students where they are — from middle school through higher education completion — providing advising, mentoring, coaching, financial aid guidance, scholarships and persistence support that help young people

Dr. Michele Scott Taylor

navigate increasingly complex pathways to college and career success. At a time when too many students face barriers beyond their control, College Now’s integrated model has never been more essential.

We are deeply grateful to the College Now staff and board for their passion, leadership and dedication, and to our donors, partners and volunteers whose belief in our mission fuels our impact every day.

As we look ahead this year and to 2027 — College Now’s 60th diamond jubilee year — we are energized about the continued opportunities to empower students to reach their full potential. With a clear strategy, a talented and mission-driven team and a committed board, College Now is well positioned to do just that, while also strengthening our region’s talent pipeline and helping students achieve the futures they deserve.

Thank you for your continued support of College Now and for being a part of this important work.

Sincerely,

Kristen Baird Adams Dr. Michele Scott Taylor Chair, Board of Directors President & CEO

About College Now

We believe that education is the foundation for personal advancement — unlocking opportunities that allow individuals to pursue meaningful careers, achieve financial stability and live fulfilling lives. Since 1967 – through the students we’ve served – we have witnessed the transformational power that access to and completion of higher education has, not only for individuals, but also in how it strengthens families and entire communities by fostering economic growth, civic engagement and a more successful future for all.

Education is for all.

Talent, ambition and potential exist everywhere, but opportunities often do not. We stand firm in our belief that no one’s future should be limited by circumstances beyond their control. True progress happens when everyone has access to education, resources and support to achieve their goals. By helping students of all ages pursue degrees, certifications and training, we’re not only opening doors to personal success, we’re fueling a more prepared workforce right here in Northeast Ohio. Our decades of impact prove that when individuals thrive through education, communities thrive with them.

Higher education matters — especially in Ohio.

National research continues to show that higher education is among the strongest predictor of economic mobility, workforce stability and longterm earnings, in addition to a myriad of other prosocial benefits. Rates of higher education completion provides clear implications for Ohio’s present and future economy. Pew Research Center analysis finds that adults with

bachelor’s degrees earn substantially more over their lifetimes and enjoy greater economic security than those with only a high school diploma. In its 2024 examination of the value of a college degree, Pew reported that fulltime workers with a bachelor’s degree earn approximately 65% more than high school graduates and are significantly less likely to face prolonged unemployment during periods of economic disruption.

At the same time, demand for higher education credentials in the workforce is accelerating. A 2025 study by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce warns that the U.S. economy faces growing skill shortages in critical occupations due to an insufficient supply of workers with higher education credentials aligned with in-demand skills. The study projects that by 2032, approximately 18.4 million experienced workers with education beyond high school will retire, significantly outpacing the 13.8 million younger workers expected to enter the labor market with similar credentials. In addition, the U.S. economy is projected to add 685,000 new jobs requiring higher education during this period. As a result, the nation will need an additional 5.25 million workers with higher education, including 4.5 million with a bachelor’s degree or higher.

National research continues to show that higher education is among the strongest predictor of economic mobility, workforce stability and long-term earnings, with clear implications for Ohio’s present and future economy.

In Ohio, where industries such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare, education and technology increasingly rely on credentialed talent, these findings underscore higher education’s role as both an economic imperative and a workforce necessity. Together, this research highlights the urgency of expanding access to and completion of higher education to ensure Ohio remains competitive, meets employer demand and builds an inclusive, future-ready workforce.

Mission in Motion

This past year, we began to implement and operationalize our strategic plan – Mission in Motion, which is our roadmap that will guide College Now and the work we do over the next few years.

Four Pillars

The 2024-25 year was just the beginning of bringing our strategic plan to life. Throughout this report, you’ll read about the specific ways we have begun to reimagine College Now to help ensure success and prosperity for individual members of our community as well as the economic vitality of our region. cngc.org/missioninmotion

Bags & Bourbon

On Oct. 24, 2024, College Now supporters took Playhouse Square by storm! Our signature fundraiser, Bags & Bourbon, also served as an evening to honor our outgoing CEO of 14 years, Lee Friedman. In total, our community raised more than $568,000 through that event to support College Now’s Mentoring Program and to create the new Lee Friedman Student Emergency Fund, which provides essential financial assistanceseparate from our scholarships - with grants in real-time up to $500 directly to our mentees encountering urgent hardships such as car repairs, utility disconnections or housing instability.

Taking place on the stage of KeyBank State Theatre, the 2024 Bags & Bourbon was our largest, with 633 attendees, nearly 200 luxury and designer handbags, 38 premium and rare bourbon packages and oncein-a-lifetime experiences in our silent auction. Included in this year’s event was an impossible-to-find Hermès Birkin 35, that was generously donated to us and worth $35,000!

Special thanks to College Now Board Members Suzanne Aral-Boutros, Stephanie Antunez, Sally Stewart and Judi Embrescia as well as to Carrie Carpenter and Angie Spitalieri Ianiro, whose leadership, expertise, creativity and enthusiastic commitment to this event and to College Now ensured its success!

MORE STUDENTS XPLORE VARIOUS CAREERS

Xplore is College Now’s interactive after-school and summer program designed to help students uncover their passions, explore future careers and prepare for college success. Each session takes a deep dive into fields of study that help students connect their interests to real college majors and career options.

Business, Finance & Entrepreneurship

Through a generous grant from KeyBank, 60 high school students explored businessrelated careers through project-based learning. KeyBank representatives led sessions on personal finance, while marketing professionals guided students through personal branding and developing marketing campaigns for their business ideas. Participants visited local businesses, including LAND Moto and Coco’s Selfie Space, to learn directly from entrepreneurs about their career paths. Students also participated in an overnight visit to The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business, where they explored business majors and college pathways.

Learn more: cngc.org/keybankxplore

In addition, Third Federal supported a summer program in which students developed and refined original business concepts, culminating in a final pitch presentation to peers, staff and invited guests. Participants spent a day at EDWINS Leadership & Restaurant Institute hearing from founder and CEO Brandon Chrostowski about his innovative approach to training and uplifting formerly incarcerated individuals, touring the facilities and eating delicious food.  Students also par ticipated in a Business Bus Tour of Cleveland’s Slavic Village, where they learned firsthand about entrepreneurial journeys and community-based businesses.

Environmental Science & Justice

STEM, Business & Finance

In partnership with Sherwin-Williams, high school participants explored color theory and chemistry, created and branded their own original paint colors, and developed business concepts that they presented to a professional panel on the final day. Middle school participants built robotic arms at Tri-C’s Advanced Technology Training Center, learned budgeting skills at the West Side Market, lamp-building at SoulCraft and game design workshops at the Cleveland Public Library.

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT: Nord Family Foundation helps College Now expand in Lorain County

In partnership with the Char and Chuck Fowler Family Foundation and Environmental Health Watch, 40 students had hands-on learning experiences and worked alongside local organizations and community members addressing environmental challenges across Cleveland. The program also included a two-day Power and Policy workshop in collaboration with the Khnemu Foundation, where students examined the intersection of environmental issues, policy and advocacy. The experience culminated in a trip to The Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory on Lake Erie’s Gibraltar Island, where students learned directly from researchers about algal blooms and ongoing environmental research.

For 35 years, the Nord Family Foundation has been a vital partner in expanding college and career opportunities for Lorain County students. Since 1990, the Foundation has invested $1.2 million in College Now, including a recent $160,000 grant supporting advising and student services. A visit to Wellington High School with Foundation representatives highlighted the impact of this partnership, including students’ success with college planning and financial aid. We celebrated 100% FAFSA completion at WHS, strong local collaborations and a growing college-going culture serving more than 4,400 students and families across Lorain County. cngc.org/nord

Getting Students of All Ages To & Through Higher Ed

ACCESS: ADULT LEARNERS

ADULT LEARNER PROGRAMS & SERVICES

We believe that it’s never too late for anyone to invest in themselves and their future. For adults who are interested in higher education for the first time or finishing a program they’ve already started, College Now helps individuals explore the educational pathways needed for their desired careers.

Each year, we extend vital services – including college and career advising, scholarships and student loan restructuring – to adults ages 19 and older. In total for the 2024-25 academic year, College Now reached out to or responded to inquiries from more than 16,000 adults; with 1,600 of those adults engaged in one-on-one sessions.

SPOTLIGHTS: Returning to school determined to finish

Inspired by his son and supported by College Now advising and scholarships, Freddy Diaz earned degrees from Cuyahoga Community College and Cleveland State University. His pursuit of higher education was not without the challenges of balancing work, family and school, but through persistence and keeping an eye on the future, Freddy reminds us that it’s never too late. cngc.org/freddydiaz

Deciding to pursue higher education usually begins with a spark. For instance, a survivor decides to obtain professional credentials to help other victims; another makes a promise to a relative. Others are tired of working dead-end jobs and seek a career. Whatever the catalyst is for adults to return to school, College Now helps with applications, financial aid, scholarships and enrollment support to ensure that they maximize their time to get on their way to the careers they want.

Getting Students of All Ages To & Through Higher Ed

STUDENT SUCCESS & RETENTION

While advising students on college access, helping with financial aid and providing scholarship resources are each crucial for higher educational success, our end goal is to ensure that students complete their programs and degrees. The path through higher education doesn’t come with a universal map, making successful navigation through challenges even more important, especially for first-generation college students.

College Now coaches on hand at multiple universities

We have taken the success of the Tri-C Scholars Program and have begun to grow a multi-site coaching program for Say Yes Cleveland scholarship recipients at several universities. The coaching includes support via email, phone and text, as well as in-person visits to campuses.

This is why we have expanded our success and retention programs on college campuses for Cleveland Metropolitan School District graduates who are receiving the Say Yes Scholarship, managed by College Now.

SPOTLIGHT: Say Yes Tri-C Scholars coaching program experiences highest levels of success

2024-25 marked the fifth anniversary of our Tri-C Scholars Program, with 44 Cuyahoga Community College students petitioning for graduation in spring/summer 2025 – the highest number to date.

Say Yes Scholarship students enrolled at Tri-C are paired with College Now’s on-campus success coaches. These dedicated coaches offer personalized guidance in academics, campus life, personal wellness and college systems and structures. Due to the foundation of camaraderie, encouragement and accountability, Tri-C Scholars who receive coaching are nearly twice as likely to graduate as their peers, as evidenced by the fact that 90% persist to second semester and more than 51% continue to their second year of school.

Stay tuned – We’re launching an evolved and enhanced student success program in the next year.

Mentoring Program

Our Mentoring Program continues to be a lifeline for scholarship recipients. Launched in 2012, volunteer mentors from the community are paired one-onone with college students and support them virtually – and occasionally in-person. Approximately 93% of our students return to school after their first year, with 67% of students graduating, compared with a 48% graduation rate nationally for similar students who receive the federal Pell Grant.

Our Mentoring Program serves 1,500 traditional-age scholarship recipients annually. We also have a small number of adult learners who participate in the Mentoring Program. In all, College Now has matched 5,750 mentors/ mentees since 2012. cngc.org/supporttosuccess

In Appreciation

Remembering Kate Howley

College Now was honored to be the recipient of a significant bequest of almost $700,000 from Kate Howley, who had a long career with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

While Ms. Howley had donated modestly to College Now during her life, we were incredibly humbled and honored to learn that she designated College Now as the beneficiary of her insurance policy. As she requested, we have established two endowed funds: The Katherine Mary Howley Endowed Scholarship Fund and The Katherine Mary Howley Endowed Fund to support the Mentoring Program.

Ms. Howley worked in public education her entire career and began as a third-grade teacher before transitioning to an elementary school librarian, a researcher and a grant writer in Cleveland schools. Her professional life was dedicated to improving educational opportunities for all children –especially children of families of limited income – a cause she continued to actively support throughout her life and one that will continue to be championed in perpetuity through her generosity to College Now.

Ms. Howley was born and lived her earliest years in Cleveland, grew up in Vermilion, and for over 50 years was part of the Lakewood community. After graduating from Ashland University, she earned a graduate degree in Library Science from Western Michigan University. She weaved a rich fabric of a life filled with travel, exercise, political campaigns, community organizations, music, theater and the arts and always caring for others.

Her legacy will benefit our students for generations to come, and we are truly grateful. As Kate’s brother Tom shared in his eulogy, “…for over 80 years… through her own kind of diligence… – and as the librarian she once was – [she] ordered her life, becoming more, never letting up on engagement and new experiences and people, guided by kindness, all the way to the end.”

“…for over 80 years… through her own kind of diligence… – and as the librarian she once was –[she] ordered her life, becoming more, never letting up on engagement and new experiences and people, guided by kindness, all the way to the end.”
