A big fan of Christian higher ed, Paige is also drawn to reading, thinking, strategizing, speaking, writing, and teaching in ways that make intimidating and complex ideas relevant to the life of a Jesus follower. She and her husband, Jay, have three married children and seven nearly perfect grandchildren.

is a lifelong member of College Church. He and his wife, Carol, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They have five adult children and seventeen grandchildren. Mark retired as CEO of Tyndale House Publishers in 2021, and has served in various leadership capacities at College Church as elder, deacon and member of the Board of Missions.

enjoys reading, baking and knitting—when she’s not writing for Connections. Her greatest joys are God and her family, and time with both makes for much joy and laughter.

Janet has attended College Church since 2005, along with her husband, Jim. Janet has served with STARS and the SOHL Task Force. She attends Women’s Bible Study and currently serves at the Bookstall. Janet works in corporate learning and recently became a U.S. citizen.

M

aybe it’s the start of a new year that has me thinking about the impact we have on one another. I’m not sure why but it’s been on my mind. So, I asked a few people to write about people who have had a big influence in their lives.

They surprised me with their responses.

Pat Cirrincione wrote about a fictional character she liked so much that she wanted to be just like her. God uses everything, even and maybe especially fiction to open our eyes.

Mark Taylor wrote about three men who had a lasting impact in his life—Rev. John Dettoni, Rev. Ed Heneger and Jim Congdon. Their influence is a mix of the practical and the profound that has followed him throughout his adult life. Vijai John Kuruppacherry wrote about Josiah Solomon, a professor from his college days, who was both humble and godly.

Finally, Ashley Anthony wrote of William Cowper, Fanny Crosby and Sarah Osborn, Christian people from church history who have had a big impact on her.

As you read their stories, ask yourself who are the people God used to shape you.

They could be real people in your life, fictional characters, or historical figures.

Consider, too, how you might be an influence on other people. Thank God for them. If your influencers are living, consider telling them thanks.

Events in life can have a dramatic impact as well. For many in College Church, short-term missions mark a person for good. Just ask Paige Cunningham, who talks about her recent trip to the Czech Republic. Some of the people I’ve met on my short-term trips are unforgettable and inspiring. We also are announcing two short-term trips for 2024, and perhaps God is calling to you apply for one of the STAMP 2024 trips.

Of course, Jesus is our ultimate influencer. He is the one who uses all the people to shape us. We see the joy he brings in Alex Lee’s piece “Owed to Joy” and Esther Waldrop’s “Pearl of Great Price.” Judy Sattler’s “Walk on Water” leads to trust. Luke Barber, a Wheaton College student, shares a Scripture-inspired poem this month, and Janet Vanne shares a unique perspective on the Sanctity of Human Life.

As I write this, we are gearing up for the opening of the STARS Family Services art show, “Storybooks and Adventures.” The art I’m seeing from them is also inspiring. Be sure to visit the Crossings show once it opens and bring a friend.

Thanks to all the artists and writers who make this issue a memorable one. Each of you who make me want to be more like Christ is an influencer in your own right. Praise be to God.

The Great Influencer Pat “Jo March” Cirrincione

W

ho or what is an influencer? According to my search on Google an influencer “is someone who champions a person with the ability to influence buyers of a product or service by promoting or recommending ideas on social media. They are considered an expert in their particular field and have a steady following. They have a large presence on social media, people trust their opinion, and their endorsements carry a considerable amount of weight.”

That said, I didn’t grow up with social media as my go to influencer. I grew up a pretty quiet and shy child who sought out the media of her day, books. Books were my favorite friends, and one of my favorite books was Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. It was Alcott who introduced me to Jo March, who had a lot to do in developing my persona (or so I thought). Jo taught me to be a strong and independent woman; to do what I truly loved (performing on stage, singing, dancing and writing). She gave me the courage to be bold, outspoken, daring, loyal, brave, principled and real. I was never happier then when I could sit and read for hours curled up in my favorite chair or write to my heart’s content about anything and everything or perform as Captain Hook in a play I wrote, directed and starred in.

Growing up, Jo March told me, and I quote: “Women have minds and souls. They too have ambition, and talent. It’s not just about beauty and love.” (Little Women) Thank you, Jo! You made being an oddball in my family easier to deal with. While my girl cousins were obsessed with getting married and having babies right out of high school, I was dreaming of a career on the stage, dancing with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and writing wonderful novels filled with adventures around the world.

Like Jo I couldn’t become involved romantically because I could not see myself settling into the role of wife and mom.

I was driven, like Jo, “by a desire for independence, control and justice.” (per Google) I wanted to carve out my own life and felt stifled when people told me to just get married and have a family, women didn’t go to college. But I had a desire to use my life and brains for a brilliant purpose. Like Jo March said, “I think I shall write books, and get rich and famous—that would suit me, so that is my favorite dream.” (Little Women) Jo March represented the “possibility of another kind of life” (per my Google search). She showed me that anything is possible.

Now, before I make Jo seem like a superhero allow me to say she was not perfect and could be selfish. She could be an introvert, and a tom boy. Yet, for a very long time, she had a

great influence on me, until I met our Lord and Savior—the great influencer, and maker of all influencers (parents, teachers, Girl Scout leaders, friends and Jo March). As I began to know the God of the Bible, I began to want to please him more than I wanted to please myself. Once he knocked on the door of my heart, Jo March began to fade into the background, almost.

It was God, not me or Jo, that made me love books and writing.

These were his gifts to me. It was God, not Jo, who gave me my dramatic and new insights, and that they come in the most ordinary of ways, like personal engagement with each other, our attention to him, and prayer. (See Caring for One Another

by Edward T. Welch) Along the way I’ve had some meaningful conversations with my heavenly Father. Who am I? Where did I come from? And how do I feel about those I love? All questions Jo was wrestling with in her life as well.

Like Jo, a God sent influencer was writing (God’s gift to me), that helped me figure out how to tell a story—a story filled with my thoughts, feelings and memories. Like crocheting and knitting, singing and dancing, or designing greeting cards, writing what God prompts me to write about is a part of his creative process in me. Some days I can wake up inspired and everything gels! Other days, I just stare at my projects for hours

and must begin some of them again. The good thing is that God is constantly developing my persona over time, and he has used books and people like Jo March to give me the courage to serve his purposes. It was while reading the Bible that he showed me it wasn’t just about a woman being beautiful, but that women like Deborah, Naomi and Ruth (to name a few) had minds and souls. They showed me, by faith, that anything is possible with God by our side, that there is meaning in everything when God is involved. What joy that brings to my heart.

I realize now that God sent me Jo March as a tool in his learning process. A lot of my life experiences where shaped by God through her, and for that I will always be grateful. I didn’t purchase a product or service from my influencers, but I was given their opinions, and through those opinions they have led me to where I’m at, now in my life. They have stayed steady in my life, and they have made me laugh, cry, and want to keep learning As I was thinking of how to end my foray into those who have influenced my life, I was awakened one night with this message from God: “Pat,” he said, “just for the record, your middle name is Jo, and you were born in March.” He was waiting for this moment to enlighten me about something I have been blind to all my life until now. How wondrous is our Lord.

I

grew up in College Church.

From the nursery onward, I was in church every Sunday. In fact, our family was in church twice on Sundays and also on Wednesday evening. I was active in KMs (middle school) and HYACKs (high school).

I will point to three people who influenced me in my early life, and two relate to church relationships.

When I was in junior high and high school, the associate pastor of College Church was REV. JOHN DETTONI. His responsibilities included oversight of the programs for middle school and high school students. As president of HYACKs for two years, I interacted regularly with John and his wife, Carol.

In addition to the Sunday morning HYACKs program, many of us were involved in service projects over spring break. Two of these service projects took groups of us to three small Presbyterian churches in southeastern Kentucky.

Letcher County is coal country, and a relatively low-income area. We stayed in the homes of church members, which gave us insight into everyday activities in these communities.

In preparation for these “Kentucky trips,” our group met weekly for several months. We formed intense relationships as we prepared special music for church services, and some of our group had an opportunity to give short sermons. That experience by itself was very formative for me.

I stayed in touch with John and Carol Dettoni after I headed off to college. In fact, we have stayed in fairly close contact for more than fifty years. My interaction with John and Carol during my high school years influenced me in terms of leadership opportunities. I also had an opportunity to observe a Christian couple as they worked through challenges in their own relationship with each other and with their two young children.

The three churches with which we worked on those mission trips were linked congregations that shared one pastor—REV. ED HENEGAR. He and his wife, Judy, worked

hard to give us high schoolers numerous opportunities to assist families in his churches and to participate in the special meetings in his churches. The first time we met with Ed, we told him our names. At the end of that meeting, he thanked each of us by name. We were very impressed with his photographic memory.

At about the time I was graduating from Wheaton North High School, Ed and Judy moved from Letcher County, Kentucky, to Durham, N.C. Ed became senior pastor of Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church, which is just one block away from the campus of Duke University.

I had been accepted at Duke and at Carleton College in Minnesota. Both good schools, and both were attractive to me.

In the end, I decided to go to the school where I could be involved in Ed Henegar’s church. So, I opted for Duke, where I met Carol Rogers—my future wife—during the first week of our freshman year.

My first Sunday at Duke, I walked from my dormitory to Blacknall Church, I thought “Look at me going to church.

Not because I have to. Not because my parents are making me go—but because I’m choosing to go.” And that choice continued for the next four years. I sang in the choir and attended both morning and evening services. I frequently met with Pastor Ed and the music leader as they planned future church services. Ed and Judy welcomed me into their home on numerous occasions, and they were happy to lend me a car when I needed it. In addition to lessons I had learned at home, I was exposed to everyday hospitality.

Early in my freshman year, Ed invited me to provide special music for an upcoming dinner for international students. Rather than doing it by myself, I went to a Campus Crusade meeting and invited others to join me. A group of 18 of us participated and one of the participants was Carol Rogers.

That dinner engagement at Blacknall Church was the first step in what became a multi-year ministry of singing contemporary Christian music in churches and other venues all around the Raleigh/Durham

area with occasional forays into South Carolina, Georgia and New York. We named the group J. C. Power and Light Company.

Carol and I co-led the group during our four years at Duke, and others picked up leadership of J. C. after we graduated. As long as twenty-five years later we heard that the group was still active under the auspices of Blacknall Church.

These two pastors—John Dettoni and Ed Henegar—were instrumental in my life through high school and college.

And Carol had also appreciated the hospitality of Ed and Judy, so we invited both John and Ed to participate in our wedding a few weeks after we graduated from Duke. Now, fifty years later, we stay in touch with both couples.

Thanks to pastors and their wives who reached into our lives. They may or may not have realized it, but we were learning about ministry and family life by watching how they lived their lives.

Another person with important influence in my life was JIM CONGDON, a young contractor in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Through the family of a church friend and classmate, I was offered a construction job in Fairbanks the summer after I graduated from high school. I had no construction experience. I grew up in a literary family, and I had learned very little about tools or carpentry projects.

These experiences in Fairbanks gave me both carpentry skills and a sense of confidence that I could successfully tackle construction projects. I have been a publisher throughout my professional career, but Carol and I have undertaken many construction projects on our own house and on our kids’ homes.

I think of Jim frequently with appreciation for all that he taught me. (Another lesson I won’t describe here is not to borrow a car without asking permission!)

I have had many influencers in my life, but I am very grateful for these three men who helped mold me into the person I am today. And I hope I have had a positive influence on people with whom I have interacted through the years.

The Quiet Influence of Josiah Solomon: A Legacy of Faith and Dedication VIJAI JOHN KURUPPACHERRY

I

n the tapestry of influential figures who have shaped my faith journey, the challenge lies not in singling out an individual but in encapsulating the depth of their impact. Amidst this rich array of mentors and guides, one person stands out for his profound influence on my life and many others: Professor Josiah Solomon.

Professor Solomon, a statistics professor at my college in India, played a pivotal role during a significant spiritual awakening on our campus in 1995, my senior year. This revival, sparked by a freshman student, led to numerous conversions, leaving an indelible mark that lasted years. Professor Solomon, a decade our senior, became a spiritual architect, nurturing this nascent faith in us.

He faced the challenge of guiding students, like myself, who were unversed in Scripture. His vast collection of books, generously lent despite often not being returned, was a testament to his commitment to our spiritual growth.

His investment went beyond mere academic guidance; it was a demonstration of selfless generosity. Reflecting now, I am awed by the thought of how much of his modest salary must have been dedicated to these resources.

But Professor Solomon’s influence extended beyond the confines of the campus. He maintained connections with each student long after graduation, a commitment that spanned continents and decades. When he visited me overseas, ten years after my graduation, his desire to visit Wheaton College in honor of

FEBRUARY 2024 CONNECTIONS his childhood hero, Jim Elliot, revealed the depth of his spiritual journey. His regular prayers for my children and the thoughtful gifts he brought showed his enduring care and attention.

This pattern of genuine concern was not exclusive to me. He prayed for every student he encountered, often visiting them with gifts in hand. His actions were thoughtful and intentional, from presenting books to strangers on street corners to following through with them later. On one of my visits to Chennai, Josiah picked me up at the airport and drove me straight to visit a mutual friend who had been sick. Since I hadn’t brought anything to take to her, he quickly ushered me into a store, where we brought fruits to give her. Observing him has brought home to me the importance of such small acts of kindness.

Josiah Solomon may not have been known for grand oratory or breathtaking endeavors.

Yet, his impact was profound. He was a faithful servant of God, tirelessly seeking to guide and nurture the family of God like a shepherd tending to his flock.

His life has been a lesson in steadfastness and humility. Many friends who were touched by the revival have gone on to achieve notable feats. Some have testified before world leaders; others have led global initiatives to spread the gospel. But in this constellation of achievements, Professor Solomon shines as a guiding star—an abiding presence, content in his quiet yet impactful ministry, continually investing in lives and rejoicing in the work God accomplishes through each of us.

In a world that often celebrates the loud and the spectacular, Professor Josiah Solomon exemplifies the power of quiet influence and the beauty of a life devoted to faithful service. His legacy is etched not in monuments or headlines but in the hearts and lives of those he touched—a true embodiment of a life lived in pursuit of God’s call.

Weak, Though Influential Ashley Anthony

I

was 18 and home, face planted in the pillows strewn about my bed. My Bible lay open next to me, each verse a reminder that I’d lost God’s favor. Each kind promise reassured me that it wasn’t mine.

For many years, I lived in a world where bad deeds cordoned off God’s presence, in a world where I was either better or worse in God’s eyes than the Christian striving beside me. I could recite “by grace, through faith” as the foundation of my salvation, but my heart shouted otherwise—I labored for God’s approval.

My life was perpetually an imbalanced scale—on the one side, the good that I did. On the other? The bad. The scale always tipped mercilessly toward the bad, a reminder of what God saw each time I entered his presence. This is why I hid my face from God in the pillows, mourning his rejection of me.

This is why, some years later, I searched for lost items with a steady cadence of contrition, convinced God was punishing me for something I did. This

is why salvation’s assurance was shaken when things went wrong—surely God was just as tired of my sin as I was.

Many days brought an unhealthy fear, nestled in my uncertainty of who God was and what he was like.

Some years ago, I began meeting others who put into words what I felt.

I met William Cowper (1731–1800), the writer who penned the words to “There is a Fountain Filled with Blood,” and struggled with whether God had actually chosen and saved him. At one point, he wrote: “I [once] thought myself secure of an eternity to be spent with the spirits of such men as He whose life afforded the subject of it. But I was little aware of what I had to expect, and that a storm was at hand which in one terrible moment would darken, and in another still more terrible blot out, that prospect forever.”

In other words, he vacillated between certainty that he was saved and certainty that he wasn’t. At one moment, he felt secured of eternity with God, yet in

another moment, he thought he had lost that security forever.

I was also introduced to Fanny Crosby, who wrote the words to “Blessed Assurance,” another hymn that declares the certainty of one’s salvation rests on the blood of Christ. Still, years before writing this one, she wrote “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior.” Have you heard of it? The refrain goes like this: Savior, Savior, Hear my humble cry; While on others Thou art calling, Do not pass me by.

In Crosby’s words, I hear a child desperate for God not to overlook her.

Please, Lord, I know you have a lot to do, but please don’t forget me. Please remember that I’m here.

More recently, I was introduced to Sarah Osborn, a seventeenth-century Christian woman who journaled her struggles with perfectionism. (Now, she didn’t say this outright, but I recognize a fellow perfectionist when I see one.)

Sarah Osborn recorded her vacillation between identifying as a sinner saved and a sinner forgotten. This eventually culminated when revivalists George Whitefield and Gilbert Tennent came to town. While spiritually stirred up

by Whitefield’s preaching, a crisis of faith followed Tennent’s preaching. She knew that God saved sinners, but had he really chosen her to save? She felt she couldn’t be sure.

and less by Sense, than I us’d to do; and therefore if he hide his Face, I do not immediately raze Foundations as formerly; and draw up hard conclusions against myself: But having treasur’d up the Experiences of many years, I repair to them in a dark and cloudy day, and find, thus, and thus, GOD has done for me,

She let what was true triumph over untruth.

And she pointed me to the truths I needed to hear.

Reading Osborn, I had a sister who knew how I felt. Her journals are short, but they detail the uncertainty that comes when we’re in charge of saving ourselves. As soon as we give in to sin, or mess something up, or fail, we’re convinced that we’ve lost God’s favor.

We wonder if God has had enough.

We have so many opportunities to grow, don’t we? Just when we think we’ve made it, something small sweeps us off our feet and forces us to catch our breath—reminders that we’re still growing, that God is still carrying on with good work within us that he started, a good work that he has promised to finish.

This is because we make pathetic saviors.

As I read Osborn’s journals, I followed her struggle with assurance until she was a much older woman.

Toward the end of her life, she wrote a letter to a friend—surprisingly—on the topic of assurance. Sarah Osborn, the woman who struggled with this very thing, who was convinced one moment she was saved and another that she wasn’t, one day served friends who struggled with assurance, too.

was unloved and uncared for. But with time? She remembered all her sweet experiences with her Lord. She remembered the answered prayers, the Christian fellowship, the times when she leaned on him, the times when God felt close—and she held on to them with what little faith she had left.

It doesn’t mean my life has been easy—I’ve suffered, too. Still, God has proven himself trustworthy in both trial and triumph—God has proven himself to be good.

Less and less over the years, my faith has become unmoored to what I’ve done, what I’ve accomplished, and who I am.

Now, this is the anchor that holds me sure, the truth that holds on to me when I’m too weak to hold on for myself: what God has started, he will finish.

OUR VISION 2024 INITIATIVES Vision: “Proclaiming the Gospel”

PATHWAY. We will develop a simple invitational pathway for our gospel ministries: Discover Jesus, Grow in Your Faith and Impact the World. In 2024, we will continue developing that pathway by emphasizing and enhancing the “on ramps” to College Church in the following ways: 1) promoting Kids’ Harbor as one of the first impressions of College Church, 2) augmenting and strengthening our Front Door ministries, and 3) establishing a culture where our congregants willingly and effectively share our faith.

Rationale: After consultation with a Christian communications company, and surveying the neighborhood, we have discovered that we need to present the distinctive gospel ministry opportunity of College Church more clearly and invitationally to the surrounding community.

COMMUNITY. We will cultivate care, encouragement, and connection in 2024 by: 1) calling a pastor focused in these areas (title to be determined), 2) establishing a permanent CARE team to support congregational care, 3) expanding elder prayer for each member of the church by name, and 4) identifying and training Small Group Coordinators to support all of our Small Group Leaders.

DISCIPLESHIP. We will elevate biblically rigorous and practical discipleship by, in 2024: 1) emphasizing and encouraging a renewed focus on discipleship in the context of church family life, 2) providing additional resources for personal disciple making as well as improving awareness and accessibility to them, and 3) offering two churchwide seminars on matters of current importance for being faithful disciples in today’s world.

Rationale: After a churchwide discipleship survey, we have ascertained a growing need for more rigorous and practical discipleship that is coherently coordinated across both small and large groups.

CAMPUS. We will increasingly activate our campus by utilizing the Crossings as a crossover space to reach the community and for student, worship and family space, funded through a capital campaign launched in 2024, prioritizing safety and accessibility upgrades to our parking and other key areas, and studying the highest and best missional use for our portfolio of rental properties.

PARTNERSHIPS. We will leverage the church’s history of church planting, training programs, and connections across the country and world by: 1) expanding the scope of our church planting efforts to include planting, strengthening and revitalizing, 2) hosting a prayer gathering for College Church members interested in this work, 3) exploring partnership with one new organizational partner, and 4) seeking to develop one new church partner in each category (planting, strengthening, revitalizing) by December 2024.

Rationale: By partnering with likeminded churches and organizations, and by broadening our scope to include planting, strengthening, and revitalization, we can increase our gospel impact through gospel-centered, Bible-preaching churches.

Rationale: After the Site and Facilities committee’s extensive work surveying the ministry pinch points, it is apparent that we need to develop our ministry space, and we will target the Crossings space.

Rationale: After conversations with key ministry leaders, it is apparent we need to increase connectivity between members and attenders of the church through mutually loving and caring hospitality.

I

grew up on the Puget Sound in Washington State. Winters were mild in the Northwest and snow never lasted for long, but one winter with a succession of days so cold nearby Snake Lake froze over. My father, who was born in the neighborhood, said it used to freeze nearly every year when he was a boy. He bundled us all into the car and we drove down to the lake to witness the phenomenon.

Dozens of other families were already there ahead of us; some of them even had skates.

It was a beautiful sight, just like a scene from a Christmas card.

Other than frozen mud puddles, I had never walked on ice. I slid down the bank with my brothers and sisters and stepped carefully onto the edge of the small lake. I wasn’t more than eight years old and I was frightened. I wasn’t afraid of falling down, I was afraid of falling through. Even though there were lots of people skating back and forth across the ice, I dabbled around the edges. I was not an adventurous child.

Then my father came along, took my hand, and began to guide me across the lake to the opposite side. The twigs and leaves trapped in the ice made it feel treacherous and uneven, but I held tightly to his hand, sliding the soles of my shoes across the surface while he kept me from stumbling. I imagined myself gliding and twirling effortlessly like I had read about in the story of Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates, but I suppose I looked more like a tottering newborn colt just learning to walk. The lake was surrounded by evergreens, leafless scrub, and thin, frosty winter air. There was an undercurrent of shared excitement among the skaters and, best of all, the inimitable wonder of walking on water. I was still afraid that the ice wouldn’t hold me, that at any minute it might crack and the dark water would swallow me, but beneath the fear, holding me steady as we crossed the frozen lake, was the knowledge that no matter what happened, my father would rescue me from danger. I put my trust in my father rather than the ice.

I wonder what Peter was thinking when he climbed out of a boat on the Sea of Galilee in the wee hours of the morning and walked across unfrozen water to Jesus. Peter was an impulsive man, a “ready, fire, aim” sort of guy. He often spoke or acted before he thought things through. Somewhere between the boat and Jesus, as the magnitude of what he was attempting began to sink in, Peter became afraid and lost his footing. His fear of drowning overwhelmed his trust in the Almighty. He cried out to Jesus for help and the Lord took his hand. Just the sort of thing a father does with a frightened child.

Many times over the years, my heavenly Father has taken me by the hand to guide me over a space I was afraid to cross on my own. I wish I could say that I have always experienced the same childlike trust in him as I did in my earthly father that day on the frozen lake. I haven’t. I’ve tripped, fallen on my face and scraped my knees more times than I can remember. But, day by day and year by year, I am learning not to put my confidence in either myself or the circumstances surrounding me. I am learning to put my confidence in the loving care of my Father and the strength of his almighty hand.

mbracing Christianity after much sophisticated argumentation, C.S. Lewis encapsulated his conversion in one word, “joy,” admitting to being “surprised” by it. What was it about joy—an elusive emotion—that tipped the balance in Lewis’s mind over a classic education, an urbane life, and a heart of agnostic stone?

“Joy,” in Lewis’s trenchant definition, is an “unsatisfied desire which is itself more desirable than any other satisfaction.” Pastor Moody expounded on this subject during Advent, calling this ephemeral desire “shocking” in its effect. What accounts for joy’s power to entrance?

Whatever the explanation, I can testify to the power, though in writing these words I am necessarily straying ever further from the quintessence of joy, which lies beyond the jurisdiction of words.

In The Pilgrim’s Regress, Lewis’s protagonist, John, seeks out the islands of his sweet desire, even as he flees the constraints of his homeland Puritania, represented by its rigid mountains and paternalistic Landlord. In Lewis’s fiction, joy was a distant string of islands; in his own life, joy came initially in the form of a childhood construction of moss and twigs, a toy garden which so smote Lewis’s young imagination that the memory of it shone through the academic overlay of Norse mythology and Wagnerian music in Lewis’s later years.

Any innocuous stimulus, suggests Lewis, may be transmuted into joy: “the smell of bonfire…morning cobwebs…the noise of falling waves.” In my case, joy was a handful of marbles given to me by my grandaunt, whom everyone called Chia Osya, “chia” meaning “old aunt” in Chinese. She was a gray-haired woman with a kind, round face and a faint voice. I was then, oh, four years old, living in a grand house in a small town in the Philippines. In my grandaunt’s pale palm were several marbles, not of the clear, plain variety, but opaquely white and splashed with swirling colors. The marbles stood out like jewels. In truth, had my grandaunt held forth diamonds in her other hand, and offered me a choice, my wide-eyed wonder would have inclined me to choose the marbles.

Of course, I realize now it wasn’t the marbles themselves which mesmerized me—it was some other thing, hinted at, which pierced me with its absence, and throttled me with “inconsolable longing.” The image of those marbles, and the feeling accompanying it, have remained with me through sixtyodd years, despite the accretion of a thousand successive objects acquired through my own labor, from gold bullion coins to garage sale gewgaws.

Joy, in the universe of our endeavors, behaves like a collapsed star, pulling all work and every human wish and aspiration— the “pursuit of happiness”—toward itself. We cannot see joy,

but we are subject, sensitive—vulnerable—to it. Our soul longs for joy as a vine’s roots, unseen, grope for water.

As I grew older, I found no lasting satisfaction in either conformity or intellectualism. Unsolicited, the wings of joy beckoned to me from behind nature’s perfect “closed loop”—its gorgeous system of stability and transformation wherein every cause is an effect, and every effect a cause, the multiplicity of movements never leading to any net loss of mass or energy, elements endlessly recombining to form compounds, organisms, geologic formations, stellar inceptions and dispersal. This natural system appealed to me because it held no room for anxiety or remorse, or indeed success or failure, since no loss was ever possible—nothing truly disappeared; everything invariably turned into something else.

I loved the everlasting, pantheistic aspect of it.

Then I remembered I was part of nature too. What would ultimately become of me? Was it all the same to me that my role and fate was to turn into a bed of fungi, thence to nutriment for bacteria? I began to have doubts.

Still, nature’s great act was preferable to mankind’s inventions and interventions. When our machines and cogged contrivances break down, they deteriorate to rust and microplastic. It takes further, mammoth exertions and new inventions to haul the eyesores to the landfill. True, civilizations take turns rising and falling, overlaying one another along rivers and valleys, but the progression entails so much angst and hullabaloo, so much second guessing and carnage that I recoiled from its inefficiency.

Nature’s processes were straightforward, not disjointed; they were lovely and flawless if one viewed them dispassionately.

routinely branches into beneficent uses and results, as well as into wicked, regrettable ones. From the same scientific sorcery emerged both public medicine and biological warfare, the Industrial Revolution but also Dickensian squalor, instantaneous communication along with social alienation.

Amid this morass, I discovered joy where it finally rested: on my wrist as I opened my Bible. The perfect closed-loop system of my imagination had been described in the catechism classes of my youth—Christ himself, the Alpha and Omega—for he who spoke the world into being will judge it at its end. Evil will be avenged in time, and good rewarded. The first shall be last; the last first. The lion and the lamb lying together, but the sheep and the goats, judged at last, standing separated—all things reconciled in Christ in encircling righteousness. God’s justice and mercy and love—the mountain peaks of Puritania—seen and realized at last by every believer as the “islands” of joy sought so fervently in life.

It is thrilling to know that somewhere in the vastness of experience, something exists which admits of no loose ends, a unity so coherent it reveals the imperfections in, and restores to health, everything within its influence. For the joy set before him, Jesus “endured the cross, despising the shame”—the same Jesus for whose sake, in turn, the apostle Paul gladly “lost all things.” What a potent thing joy must be, to draw such goodness and sacrifice to it.

But don’t think too much about it—this butterfly isn’t an idea, or an intuition, or even a vision. It is a certainty.

But I could not remain dispassionate. Joy, flitting away, forced me to see nature’s “closed loop” as a deceptive arrangement.

The universe would end, after all, in ten billion to ten trillion years, entropy being present in every atom. The universe, like any wind-up clock, had a beginning, inaugurated with a Big Bang whose physics we can hardly formulate, and whose metaphysics continue to baffle many. Nature was vitiated; if one got personally involved for a moment, one saw nature as being suspiciously “red in claw and tooth.”

So where had joy gone? It kept leading me on—this glistening, translucent butterfly fluttering in a hall of mirrors, seemingly everywhere at once (as God is), but solid and real only when it alights on you. And this—joy’s link to divinity, its strand of timelessness—is the reason joy so keenly captivates and haunts us. I followed, as though on a spellbound pilgrimage. I owed it to joy to turn my head from man’s philosophizing, which had become tiresome. I heard the same blather from post-modernist pundits that I had read from Enlightenment thinkers and pagan Greeks. Most dialecticians champion virtue, and some uphold vice, but too many could not tell one from the other.

I concluded also that technology is incapable of picking the fruits of wisdom. Though advancing exponentially, technology

refused, until this spring. Then, we prayed in front of each school.

On the van ride to Mendelova the next morning, we were delighted by a full crescent rainbow, each end gently resting in a field. God’s promise made visible.

Why We Came

The first class of the day set the pattern. After a fun groundbreaker exercise, team members sat in pairs at tables around the room. In groups of three-four, students picked which pair they wanted to chat with. Nathan invited those who were interested in continuing the conversation to the church youth group meeting on Wednesday, or to gather after school at a nearby coffee shop.

“Why did you come?”

F

lanked by two friends, the curious high school student leaned across the classroom table as she asked the question. It was my fourth day of back-toback conversations with teenagers at high schools in Opava, Czech Republic (CR).

Tears sprang to my eyes as I answered, “I came because I love God, and I love the people he loves.”

Why would anyone travel for almost 24 hours and nearly 5,000 miles to talk with high school students?

The STAMP team of ten adults had been invited by College Church missionaries Nathan and Vera Beck to help with their pre-evangelism strategy that focused on students in the two most prestigious high schools in the city. We were to join English conversation classes, at the school’s invitation, to help students practice their listening and speaking skills. Remarkably, we had complete freedom to talk about faith and Jesus.

You might wonder, as we did, what in the world did a group made up of people mostly over 50 have in common

with teenagers? How would we connect, especially in such a short time? It was sobering to learn that the CR is the most atheistic country in Europe, and for many Czechs that is their identity.

These were natural worries.

Over time our team planning meetings pivoted from logistics, to support letters, to identifying relevant life experiences, and a quick prayer at the end, to beginning with prayer. We prayed that the Holy Spirit would prepare the students’ hearts and give us sensitivity about how to, and boldness for when, to speak. We prayed for spiritual curiosity and hunger. We prayed for the Becks, for their encouragement and endurance in such hard-as-rocks soil.

Prayer prepares people, and prayer opens doors.

On our first Sunday afternoon there, we walked to the two high schools, located just steps from one another. Nathan told us about the personality of each school.

Mendelova High School had welcomed English-speaking visitors for years, but Silesian High School had consistently

American visitors are not common in Opava, and word got around. Other teachers asked us to come to their classes. That meant dividing the team and each of us going solo. Not enough time to get nervous, but time enough to pray.

Lord, help me listen well, and find some point of connection with the students.

Each evening, the team debriefed over dinner, as we sat at a large table in the back of the hotel dining room. The details of the day’s encounters added up to two (at least) important observations: First, each team member had his or her own way of connecting with students, and each made a unique contribution to the day. Second, the Holy Spirit was at work during and between the classes.

For example, during one of the breaks we were invited into the senior lounge, where some students chatted, studied or grabbed a quick snack. Jon Smalley noticed some girls with a celebratory cake and said in his humorously disarming way, “Where’s my slice?”

They laughed, and that was it.

That same afternoon one of the “cake girls” showed up for coffee at the local cafe, even though she had not been in any of the English conversation classes.

her to know more about this wacky but obviously caring person. She had a lengthy conversation with Jon, as well as Klara, who is one of the Czech mentors to the youth group.

On the second day, one of my classroom encounters was with a group of three girls who were disinterested in spiritual things. It was hard going, what you might call plowing concrete. On my way to the next class I prayed, “Holy Spirit, please show up. Help me to remain engaged and sensitive to what you are doing.”

As I entered the classroom, Nathan said, “Our icebreaker questions work for freshmen but not for seniors. What could we ask to get them into a deeper level of discussion?”

Without pausing to ponder, I responded, “Who is the most influential person in your life?”

A Holy Spirit nudge.

The question prompted deeper points of connection. Naomi (not her real name) told me that she was her own boss, that she guided her own life. As Naomi’s little group asked other team members who their most influential person was, Judy Gao answered, “Jesus.”

In reporting on the results of their survey, Naomi listed various responses, and concluded with, “And one person said ‘Jesus.’ It’s interesting that their most influential person is a fictitious character.”

When the student groups selected team members, Naomi made a beeline for Judy. By the end of their conversation, Naomi’s skepticism was gone, replaced by “I want to learn more about the Bible and this Jesus.”

On the first afternoon when we met students at the coffee shop, Cliff Dyhouse was sitting alone. But he wasn’t idle. As he observed Judy talking earnestly with a student about faith, Cliff was praying. continued on next page

To use a cliché, these brief examples are only the tip of the iceberg of how we not only saw God at work, but also got to be part of the Holy Spirit’s activity in the Czech Republic. We also benefitted from a crash course in how to do personal evangelism.

It was immersion learning, going from one conversation to the next. We practiced listening, detecting points of connection, and following up with a probing question, or simply stating at least one snippet of God’s good news.

Planting seeds, not knowing how hardened the ground of their hearts might be.

We had practice in encountering opposition such as stony faces, the limited English vocabulary of younger students, or the nervousness of being the last team member chosen for conversation. Then, praying, taking a deep breath, and doing it again.

Announcing: Short Term Teams 2024 FRANCE: Pray the streets, drink coffee with locals and share the gospel! Join missionaries Stanley and Marjorie Okoro in Lille, France, in evangelistic efforts to engage French nationals in gospel conversations. Speaking French is helpful, though not necessary. The dates of the trip are scheduled for October 5-13.

Over the course of the week, our team chatted with about 500-600 students and teachers. We identified only about 1 in 10 who seemed open or interested in continuing a spiritual conversation, but that added up to 50-60 students. That’s the power of a team.

THAILAND: Have a heart for kids, especially missionary kids? Serve missionary families by caring for their children of all ages during an annual retreat in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The Pearl of Great Price ESTHER WALDROP

atthew 13:44–45 describes the kingdom of heaven “like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all he has and buys that field.”

And also, “like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

For eight years, my husband, John, and I lived and served in a place where we had to be a bit careful about the way we shared the gospel. This past October we were attending the Missions Festival, and Curt asked a group of us to think about this question: What fears do people in my context need to overcome in order to share the good news? The fears that came immediately to mind for me? Fear of not measuring up to the standards of hospitality or goodness of our host culture, fears of offending, fear of rejection. . .

But in the place where we served, a person who comes to Christ stands to lose some things that we consider very precious: family relationships, status in society, their jobs, even their very lives.

And upon deeper reflection I realized that as much as I hate to admit it, it is very possible that deep in my own heart I wonder whether they would be okay without these things. Could the root of my hesitancy really be even deeper? Could it be the fear of what the cost of following Jesus might be . . . to them?

In the months before we left on home assignment, the Lord brought a couple of people into our lives who were new believers, and one was facing the loss of all those things mentioned above—all of them. And she was so in love with Jesus, none of those things mattered. All she wanted was to know him more, spend time in the Word, share the good news with those closest to her, whatever the cost. And I was reminded of the reason we do what we do—it is because Jesus really is the pearl of great price, and he is worth everything we lose to gain him, and more.

I have always known that God will take care of me—so when the waves come, even though I do feel fear, there is a part of me that knows that no matter what happens, at the end there is Jesus. And I know he has taken the sting of death, and borne the guilt, the shame, the sorrows, our griefs, on himself at the cross.

So, any blows we bear here on earth are tempered by that hope: Because he has taken the worst of it, we will make it through to the other side, ultimately healed.

But do I have the same faith, as I see those I love suffer, that the same can be true for them? Yes, I do. And that makes all the difference.

Haven’t we ourselves seen that Jesus’ worth is so far above not just anything but everything else combined? And if it is true for us, isn’t it true for all those we care about as well? If so, surely his love can cast out our fears of what it might cost for someone else to follow Jesus . . . and even my petty fears of not measuring up, of being misunderstood, of offending. If the kingdom of God is truly as life-changing and cataclysmic of a loyalty shift as we say it is—it truly is worth everything, both for us and for those we hope to speak to about it.

May we be that good soil, who, “hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience,”— those who are not concerned with saving our own lives, but hold them loosely for his sake, who carry close to our hearts the precious seed of the gospel, the word of truth, who value his words more than any of the concerns of this world, and who take him at his word, trusting that it is our Father’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom. And if our treasure is there, our hearts will be too.

And remembering this will keep us from the fear that anything we (or others) might lose in the process is worth more than our true pearl of great price. Sometimes the question is all we need to realize the truth: What are we afraid of?

Salt, Light and the Assisted Suicide Debate Janet Vanne

D

iscussing suicide is not most people’s idea of a polite, pleasant conversation with friends over tea. It certainly was not mine. But, I have had to face the horrible reality of this since 2016 when I learned that my home country, Canada, had just passed Bill C-7: An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying) into law that legalized medical homicide.

Seven years forward, the Medical Aid in Dying in Canada has now become a runaway train. A recent report published by the Canadian Ministry of Health shows that one in 25 deaths in Canada are caused by assisted suicide or euthanasia. The current Canadian Minister of Health, Mark Holland maintained “we continue to advance core principles of safety, accessibility, and the protection of persons who may be vulnerable, throughout the MAID system.” Note the irony in this statement. Below are some “highlights” from the Canadian Ministry’s 2022 annual report: •

The number of MAID cases grew by 31.2% over 2021.

•

More males (51.4%) than females (48.6%) received MAID.

•

The average age of individuals at the time MAID was provided in 2022 was 77.0 years. Only a small percentage was between 18-45 (1.3%) and 46-55 (3.2%).

•

Cancer (63.0%) is the most cited underlying medical condition for MAID, followed by cardiovascular conditions (18.8%), other conditions (14.9%), respiratory conditions (13.2%) and neurological conditions (12.6%).

•

MAID for patients whose deaths are not reasonably foreseeable [emphasis mine] was only legalised in 2021. In 2022, 3.5% of the total number of MAID deaths (463 individuals), were individuals whose natural deaths were not reasonably foreseeable. This is an increase from 2.2% in 2021. The most cited underlying medical condition for this population was neurological (50.0%), followed

by other conditions (37.1%), and multiple comorbidities (23.5%).

•

In 2022, the most commonly cited sources of suffering by individuals requesting MAID were the loss of ability to engage in meaningful activities (86.3%), followed by loss of ability to perform activities of daily living (81.9%) and inadequate control of pain, or concern about controlling pain (59.2%).

•

The number of MAID providers is growing. During 2022 there were 1,837, up 19.1% from 2021. 95.0% of all MAID practitioners were physicians, while 5.0% were nurse practitioners. However, the number of nurses providing MAID is growing. Nurse practitioners performed 9.4% of all MAID procedures, up from 8.4% in 2021 and from 7.0% in 2019.

•

As MAID becomes socially normalised, doctors are doing them more frequently. In 2022, the average number of MAID provisions per practitioner was 7.2, compared to 6.5 (2021), 5.8 (2020) and 5.1 (2019).

The United States is not immune from this. The issue of assisted suicide was recently debated within the American Medical Association (AMA). There were two resolutions (Resolution 4 and 5) considered at the November 2023 meeting of the AMA House of Delegates.

Resolution 4 proposed to change the AMA position from opposition to supporting assisted suicide and it would remove its current opposition to “performing euthanasia.” Similarly, Resolution 5 proposed to change the AMA position to being neutral on assisted suicide. With either resolution, the assisted suicide verbiage would change to “Medical Aid in Dying” or MAID. This term is used to describe both assisting in suicide and euthanasia, and is, in the final analysis, just a euphemism to hide a darker issue. Fortunately, both resolutions were rejected by the AMA House of Delegates in November.

FEBRUARY 2024 CONNECTIONS

In contrast, the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) passed Resolution 12.202236 earlier this year where they adopted a neutral stance on legislative efforts to authorize “medical aid in dying.” This recent ISMS decision has significant impact on the assisted suicide debate as it can influence the acceptance of legislation that supports assisted suicide.

There is much we can learn from the Canadian experiment. If we legalize and normalize what was once a criminal act, it may quickly become socially acceptable—even expected in some situations.

The vulnerable are particularly at risk and it may well become a so-called convenient solution when medical funding runs out for treatment or programs.

Indeed, I’ve read of stories where the ill are being offered Medical Aid in Dying rather than actual medical treatment.

Tragically, in 2024 MAID is being extended to those with mental illness.

As the church, let us not be caught unawares. We need to stay informed and be in ongoing prayer in community about a matter that is critically important, in order to speak wisely in obedience to Scripture about the issue. To those with a life-threatening illness and who have lost hope, it is our mandate to pray for them and to encourage them. To those who do not have assurance of salvation, we are to use every opportunity to share Christ, who suffered and died for this sin-filled world. Our suffering is not in vain, nor is others’ suffering. God can and does use suffering for good and for his glory as Paul says in Romans 8:18, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” Who knows if God will use the final days of a person’s life to bring that person to saving faith? In Matthew 5:13-16 the Lord Jesus taught that we are to be salt, i.e., preserving the world from moral decay, and to let our light shine before others “so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” May we be salt and light in these difficult days.

SHANNON Shannon was in an unstable relationship with her boyfriend when she found out she was pregnant. Because she was concerned about being tied to him in the future and worried about finances, she scheduled an abortion. Shannon stated that her main concern was being able to afford caring for a baby as a single mother.

H

aving lived around missionaries for many years here at College Church, I have grown to appreciate the unusual skills and callings they acquire along the way. Though not a missionary, I recognize that there is a unique relationship between those who serve overseas and the people and churches that support them over the years.

We all are dependent on the Lord to provide for us, but missionaries rely on friends and supporters, sending churches or denominations to help them live and do ministry. It’s a strange and sometimes awkward dynamic. The way that they live reminds me that ultimately the same is true for our church. We depend on one another to pay for ministries, maintain our buildings and support the local ministries and missionaries both local and global.

Giving to church, supporting missionaries or giving to ministries we believe in is an entirely different animal than the invoices, the rent/mortgage, the car payments and grocery bills we pay. At the core, they might feel like the same thing, but I believe they are not the same. And the giving that seems optional is something that should actually be a higher priority.

When we give to church or support ministries or the parachurch organization, we have opportunities to reorder our lives. Many of us are studying the Book of Act this year. We see the early church caring for one another in amazing kingdom ways. It seems so far away from the way we live our daily lives. But I think we are easily more like them that different from them.

Acts 2:42-47: And they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

You can’t read that passage from Acts without being struck by how out of step it is with the ancient world or the modern one. This is the church. This is what we do.

When we gather breaking bread, opening the Word together, and giving to those who have needs, we are the Acts 2 church. I’ve been thinking about that, asking God to show me ways me and my family can turn over our finances, our time and our hearts to those around us like they did in Acts.

This kind of giving is an expression of devotion to God. To walk in a different direction than the world, to walk with open hands. We live in the awe-inspiring presence of our holy God. So, I give, but I can do better, learn to give more, be ever more different from the wisdom of this world and both live and give in the economy of the kingdom that is to come.

As we devote ourselves more fully, we give more freely and find ourselves more and more like Christ. Dare we strive to do better this year than last?
