The majority of the victims and survivors, and most of the folks taking action to help and empower are female.

Women in history: a look back through the ages

hroughout history there have been women who made great advancements to society, but they’re often forgotten or go unacknowledged for years. Everyone remembers the men in history. The Napoleons, George Washington, Henry VIII, Einstein and Tesla – but women, too, have done amazing things worthy of immortalization.

Known for her poetry and being called the 10th muse by the Greek philosopher Plato, Sappho is an often overlooked artist from the Isle of Lesbos.

Poets.org claim that Sappho is one of the greatest lyric poets to have ever written, though little of her work remains today.

“The greatest problem for Sappho studies is that there’s so little Sappho to study,” wrote Daniel Mendelsohn in a 2015 article for The New Yorker. “It would be hard to think of another poet whose status is so disproportionate to the size of her surviving body of work.”

Coming before Cleopatra were Sobeknefru and Hatshepsut. Following her reign, Cleopatra’s stepson tried to erase her from the annals of history but failed.

“Knowing that her power grab was highly controversial, Hatshepsut fought to defend its legitimacy, pointing to her royal lineage and claiming that her father had appointed her his successor,” said History.com. “She sought to reinvent her image, and in statues and paintings

of that time, she ordered that she be portrayed as a male pharaoh, with a beard and large muscles.

In other images, however, she appeared in traditional female regalia.”

Other famous queens have ruled throughout history, including Mary, Queen of Scots, her cousin Queen Elizabeth I and the current, longest-presiding British Monarch in history Queen Elizabeth II. But though women may have been in power a spattering of times throughout history, outside of the throne, most were still treated as second-class citizens – enter the suffragettes.

“I know that women, once convinced that they are doing what is right, that their rebellion is just, will go on, no matter what the difficulties, no matter what the dangers, so long as there is a woman alive to hold up the flag of rebellion. I would rather be a rebel than a slave,” said well-known American suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.

Mary Wollstonecraft penned her book “A Vindication of the Rights of Women” in 1792 – one of the earliest writings regarding equality of men and women. A century later, Susan B. Anthony fought for female equality across the sea in the United States of America.

Today, many women still fight for equality – nationally, women are paid an average of 20 percent less than their male counterparts doing the same job. In countries throughout the world, women like Malala Yousafzai – who was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman for attending school and defending women’s and girls’ rights to education – are fighting

just to earn an education.

“I don’t want to be thought of as the ‘girl who was shot by the Taliban’ but the ‘girl who fought for education.’ This is the cause to which I want to devote my life,” Yousafzai wrote in her memoir.

Other women of color have stood up to sexism and racism over the years

and still fight for equality to this day – even equality with fellow white women.

Historical women of color heroines include Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman, who were born into slavery but escaped and became an advocate for the freedom of their fellow enslaved men, women and children.

Then there was Rosa Parks, who refused to give up her seat and move to the back of the bus so that a white man could sit down.

Women have also led the way in literary and scientific endeavors over the years. Take, for example, the creator of the science fiction genre – the daughter of the aforementioned Wollstonecraft. Mary Shelley originally published her groundbreaking novel “Frankenstein” 200 years ago without her name attached for fear she would lose her children.

“It was considered such a masculine novel that when published anonymously (as was common for works written by women), many people attributed it to her husband,” wrote Harriet Hall in a 2018 article for Independent.

Then there were the women scientists, often unsung throughout history.

Rosalind Franklin discovered the double helix of DNA – though Francis Crick and James Watson were ultimately awarded credit and a Nobel Prize for the discovery.

Franklin was not included in the award for her contribution because the Nobel Committee does not grant prizes posthumously.

A scientist who did win, not one, but two Nobel Prizes was Marie Curie.

War, Curie developed the practical use of X-Rays; she also discovered two new elements, polonium and radium,” wrote a biography of Curie on Biographyonline.net. “Her pioneering scientific work was made more remarkable because of the discrimination which existed against women in science at the time.”

With both brains and beauty, actress Hedy Lamarr paved the way for modern wireless technology such as WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth.

According to Forbes, however, her estate has not received a dime of compensation for her invaluable technological advancement.

“Although her ideas were at first ignored, the technology (which she and Antheil patented in 1942)

was later used by the military — during the Cuban missile crisis in October 1962, for example — and more recently, it has been employed in wireless technologies like cell phones,” wrote Melinda Wenner in a 2008 Scientific American article.

“It was eventually recognized in 1997, when the Electronic Frontier Foundation honored Lamarr with a special Pioneer Award and she became the first woman to receive the Invention Convention’s BULBIE Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award.”

This is just a handful of the many women who have done great things to make the world a better place.

Throughout history and into the future, women have been and will continue to be, leaders and achievers.

Q&A with Orcas Island realtor Mariah Dunning Mariah Dunning owns and operates Windermere Orcas Island.

Sounder: Tell us a bit about your business and how you came to this line of work.

Mariah Dunning: I was working with my parents, who used to own the Radioshack (on island).

One day, Fred Munder, a long-time realtor at Coldwell Banker, called me up and said, “My assistant just won $6 million in the lottery. How would you like to get into real estate?”

And that is how my real estate career began.

I worked as an assistant to Fred for about a year.

After that, I went out on my own as a broker, still at Coldwell Banker. Shortly after that, Jim Murrey and Stu Stephens contacted me.

They were the co-owners of the RE/MAX office and were looking to expand their office. Jim had great experience in commercial real estate, and Stu had tremendous experience overall as a longtime broker on Orcas.

I saw this as a unique opportunity to learn from some great teachers and build on the foundation of knowledge that Fred had introduced me to. While our RE/MAX office was small in the number of

brokers in the office, it was a very productive environment.

In 2006, Jim and Stu decided that they preferred to simply be brokers rather than have the additional responsibilities of owning an agency, and the RE/MAX office joined Windermere.

At the time, I did not

fully understand the differences between offices, and their respective franchises.

However, it did not take all of us RE/MAX folks long to understand why the Windermere name and its brokers dominate the western real estate markets, and particularly the northwest region.

The year 2008 was yet

another time of great transition in real estate here on Orcas. This was the year that Coldwell Banker closed their doors (with several brokers joining Windermere) as well as Gudgell Properties closing and becoming a part of Windermere.

Suddenly, Windermere became the largest real estate office on Orcas. At that time, John Dunning, the owner, was living on San Juan Island. And, with a brokerage this size, it was time to enlist a general manager. John presented me with an offer to become the general manager, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Sounder: What do you love about your profession?

MD: I love having the opportunity to work with brokers who are new to the business. It is great fun to support them as they establish themselves in the local real estate community.

Sounder: What is the most difficult part of your job?

MD: Balancing home and work. I always like to be available to support the brokers, but I value my family time, too.

MD: My daughter Serafina inspires me each and every day to be the best that I can be.

MD: We love to travel, spend time on the boat and kayak with Serafina.

fton Segault is living her dream as the owner of Omari Beauty Bar. “I really wanted to be able to make a connection with people and help instill confidence,” said Segault, a licensed aesthetician. “My work is very rewarding, and I truly enjoy every aspect of it.”

Five years ago, she attended the Euro Institute of Skin Care in Renton, Washington. It was an intensive program with classes six days a week that combined a holistic approach to skin care along with anatomy and nutrition.

“What we put on our skin has the same effect as what we put in our bodies,” she said.

More than two years ago, Segault opened her spa at 434 Madrona St. (across from the vet), where she offers facials, corrective peels, sugaring hair removal, lash and brow tinting and bridal makeup artistry. This past year she had 20 bridal clients.

“My vision for the spa was to create a space that felt luxurious yet comfortable,” she said. “I wanted to

“I knew I wanted to own my space in a small town,” she said. “It’s everything I dreamed it would be. I’m forming relationships with people I wouldn’t have crossed paths with otherwise.”

Segault says it’s “very powerful” helping clients improve their skin so that they no longer feel required to wear makeup.

Susan Bradbury is opening the door to a healthy future

usan Bradbury wants to lead people to metaphorical open doors to their health. An acupuncturist for 19 years, Bradbury and her chiropractor husband Tim recently opened an office on Orcas. It is open two days a week.

“I got into acupuncture because I love working one on one with people and seeing the transformations they make,” said Bradbury. “Acupuncture is somewhere between 3-5,000 years old and a medicine that you can study your entire life and continue to learn more, to be helpful to the people you are working with.”

Bradbury’s acupuncture studio is located at 33 Urner St., Unit 1. She and her husband hope to retire to the island but are settling for working out of an Orcas office until that dream can become a reality. They currently live in Bellingham, where they own and operate a chiropractic and acupuncture business.

“My dream for our clinic on Orcas is that we continue to grow and work synergistically with other practitioners on Orcas,” Bradbury said. “I find it very rewarding to work across various disciplines for the betterment of someone’s health.”

Bradbury said that acupuncture can help a variety of patients who have digestive problems, anxiety, depression and even the side effects of chemotherapy.

“I see people in our Bellingham clinic who come and are in good health and request a seasonal tuneup,” Bradbury said. ‘“The seasons are associated with the different organ systems and the tune-up is helpful entering a new season. Presently we are in the season of the lungs for the fall.”

Bradbury hasn’t always been an acupuncturist. She began nursing school at the University of Washington but didn’t complete her studies. Instead, she went to work as a general contractor. Her largest job was constructing the 27-hole Avalon Golf Course

“I knew it was time to get back to working with people, and acupuncture was my avenue,” Bradbury said.

Raised in a family of musicians and entertainers, Grace McCune has been steeped in the world of theater and music since she was a child.

Prior to living on Orcas, McCune toured the country, playing her piano and singing in a wide variety of venues.

Her songwriting is deeply personal and explores her life’s journey. She has released three studio albums, 2 Eps and three live concert albums.

A long-time resident of Orcas Island, McCune teaches music to singers of all ages from her studio “Grace Notes” in Eastsound. One of her greatest joys is helping others find their voice and connect with music on a deeper level.

In 2008, McCune also founded and leads the Rock on the Rock Choir and has co-produced such productions as “Moulin Rouge,” “Across the Universe,” “Rock of Orcas” and “Teatro Titikookoo” and “This is Me.”

A

n opportunity for summer work at a popular inn on Orcas Island brought me here 15 years ago. Orcas became a special place where, my cat Serafina, my dog Rosheen and I, all felt at home. I started Orcas Events as an Event Planning and Coordination service in 2004. Like many of us, I worked numerous jobs to be able to live and pay rent on the island, including housekeeping, weeding, pet sitting, cooking and serving. Any honest job that came my way I would take.

One snowy winter afternoon, while sitting in my 15’ travel trailer, I studied the local market, looking for a business that was needed on the island. And thus, my party rental business was born. It all started with a chocolate fountain machine, a 15’x15’ dance floor and 100 chairs. My office was my trailer and my warehouse was Eastsound Mini Storage.

I became a member of two organizations: our local Chamber and, the San Juan Island Visitors Bureau. At various expositions and events, I helped promote Orcas Island as a wedding destination and for three consecutive years Orcas Events had a 10 x10 booth at the Seattle Wedding Show, promoting the island for Weddings.

Resilience, hard work and the “never give up” attitude helped me survive the recession of the following years, as well as the process of building my warehouse and the constant challenge of the island’s labor shortage.

Today Orcas Events is a full-service events equipment rental company supplying all the San Juan islands and providing quality inventory for events and celebrations of all kinds.

I wouldn’t have been able to achieve it without the support of other wonderful women that worked with me, such as Lolin Rodriguez, Cindy Carter, Gaby Villareal and Elizabeth Moore. Most importantly, I wouldn’t have been able to do any of the above if I hadn’t owned my own home. In 2010 I had the opportunity to purchase an OPAL home; it was the key to being able to stay on the island and focus on my business.

I am so grateful to the many people who helped Orcas Events grow. I feel privileged to be part of this Community.
