We publish our yearly holiday special to share the many events and celebrations that you and yours might enjoy from Thanksgiving to after New Year’s. Many of the offerings presented in this guide are long-held island traditions and are a special part of the holiday season.

One of those traditions is the generous spirit of giving to the less fortunate in our community. We encourage you to support the many organizations that devote their time and talents to making all of our lives better – especially at Christmastime.

There is also a plethora of concerts, performances and church events to meet every interest. Check out the stories and calendar of events inside.

Another tradition is represented by the advertisers who make the holiday edition (and every other edition of the paper) possible. Your friends and neighbors in their shops, stores and restaurants want to make your holidays merry, and they need your patronage to make the season a merry one for

themselves and their employees and families.

Islanders support local businesses because those businesses sell quality products at fair prices, and because islanders know that if they don’t buy locally, those businesses simply can’t continue. Merchants in the San Juans are much more dependent on you for their livelihood than those on the mainland.

Two-thirds of the money you spend here stays here. For most merchants and their families, that money puts food on the table and clothes on their children. One hundred dollars spent on San Juan, Orcas or Lopez means a lot to those communities. That same $100 doesn’t have anything close to the same effect on the mainland. And the five or 10 percent you think you’re saving simply goes into ferry fares and fuel. Plus, you get the unsavory seasonal experiences of crowded parking lots, empty shelves and long lines at the cash register when you trek off island to make your purchases.

Do yourself and your fellow islanders a big favor: shop locally. If you really want to take a ferry, take it to one of the other islands. Tell them the newspaper sent you.

No place like home for the holiday season Caroling, cookies, hot cocoa and much, much more in store in Island Lights Festival

igger, bolder and brighter than ever.

In fact, the dark days of winter will light up like a solar flare when, with the flip of a switch, the holiday season shifts into the festive fast lane at the annual Island Lights Festival and Tree Lighting Ceremony, Dec. 5, in Friday Harbor.

Why so bright? Well, for starters, how about 25,000 brand new decorative lights adorning the historic, stately twin elms and the arbor of the town's signature holiday gathering spot, Memorial Park, overlooking the harbor. For this one, you just might want to bring along a pair of shades.

This year's annual event will be enlivened by a fresh, festive, illuminated atmosphere in large part because the town council chipped in a little over $15,000 to cover the cost of the new lights and to have them professionally, meticulously and carefully decorated around the trunks of the elms and the arbors as well, and to have myriad strands of lights painstakingly woven throughout the branches. And, not just by some guy down the street either, but by one of Seattle's premier holiday and event lighting companies, Fleming's Holiday & Event Lighting, regionally renowned and perhaps best known for its holiday lights in the city of Bellevue, at Bellevue Square, and at Alderwood Mall.

The new lights are of high-quality and built to last and, according to town Administrator Duncan Wilson, the strands in the branches can remain in place throughout the year and, with bit of minor maintenance and upkeep, will not have to be restrung for future holiday events.

tive lights are sure to draw oodles of "oohs and aahs," and are no doubt a main attraction, they're just one element of the Island Lights Festival. Leading up to the flip of the switch, you can enjoy hot drinks and holiday treats beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Park, where the Island Chordsmen Barbershop Singers will also be serenading event-goers with traditional Christmas songs; holiday wreaths will also be available for purchase, a benefit for the Friday Harbor High School Class of 2015 graduation night soiree.

At 5:10 p.m., the Friday Harbor Elementary School Choir will step into the spotlight to lead a community sing-along of traditional holiday tunes. The switch is set to go up on the tree lighting at 5:30 p.m., and on the heels of the ceremony's illuminating peak, you can stroll over to the Whale Museum for post-event cookies, cider and hot chocolate.

Holiday arts 'For All' Salute to 'Patsy' stars in I

sland Stage Left returns with its holiday production "Omnium Gatherum," a compilation of poetry and readings interspersed with music, sure to get you feeling festive.

"Our Christmas offering is not a play, but a sort of literary and musical stocking," Stage Left's Helen Machin-Smith said. "Designed to kindle the holiday spirit."

"Omnium Gatherum" which means, "a gathering of all," will be at the Roche Harbor Pavilion, Dec. 18-25, at 7 p.m.

There will be secondary performances at 4 p.m. on Sun., Dec. 21, and on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, Dec. 24.

The production features a talented ensemble of actors and readers, including Stage Left co-founders Machin-Smith and Daniel Mayes, and Seattle based actor-musician Jonathan Shue. MachinSmith is also the director and compiler for the production.

Stage Left's holiday plays and productions have become tradition for many islanders and their families. This year's performance is designed to keep all faiths, beliefs (or lack thereof) in mind.

Theatre Holiday Festival T

wo events sure to be filled with good cheer will take the stage at the San Juan Community Theatre this holiday season.

A Silent & live auction, gourmet food and wine, and a tribute to the divine Ms. Cline--SJCT's biggest annual fundraiser returns in the form of the 2014 Holiday Festival, Dec. 6, 5 p.m.

Tap your toe to island musicians Kate Schuman and Keith Busha, as they entertain and pay tribute to the popular country singer, Patsy Cline.

Throw a few holiday tunes into the mix, a dancing bonanza at evening's end complete with blues and jazz, and the Whittier Stage is set for an entertaining jaunt. And, that's just the beginning.

Radio show host and founder of Northwest Benefit Auctions, Jay Fiske, will emcee the live auction with his unique style and humor. The selfproclaimed "Auction Maestro," will auction off fine art and exciting travel experiences.

Roche Harbor Resort's executive chef, Bill Shaw, will dish-up gourmet concoctions, and provide fine wine.

Based on the E.T.A Hoffmann story, "The Nutcracker" is a world classic exploring universal themes of power, evil, and love.

Community Thanksgiving dinner: toast of the town W

hat began with mashed potatoes out of a box and frozen pies, has evolved into to an event with fresh, festive holiday dishes enjoyed by more than 400 people each year.

The annual San Juan Island Thanksgiving Community Dinner returns for its 16th consecutive year, with a new location, 12 p.m., Nov. 27.

With an ever-increasing amount Contributed photo of people, organizers have moved Community dinner moves to the Mullis Center for 2014. the event to the Mullis Community Center, where there will be more space and elbow room. From those that have three houses to those that have three jobs, everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

"This is different than having a soup kitchen thanksgiving," Community Dinner organizer Jim Kynch said. "It's a community meal, and everyone is there."

The event offers as much, or as little, involvement as one desires.

Kings Market donated about 28 turkeys, which will be delivered the day before Thanksgiving. Islanders can help out by dropping by and picking up a pre-seasoned turkey, prepped and ready to go in a cooking bag and foil pan, put it in the oven at the appropriate time, and then return the cooked turkey when it's ready to be carved.

There's need for volunteers to help work in the serving line and at the drink bar as well. People can also just drop-in and a grab a plate.

Last year, organizers and volunteers served more than 400 guests over the course of the day. Even more are expected to attend this year's dinner.

"One year I looked around and saw four generations," said organizer Minnie Kynch. "It's like having a big family Thanksgiving dinner."

The community dinner is a joint effort of several local civic groups, including Kiwanis, Lions, American Legion, the Grange and Rotary Club.

'Early Dinner?' Tasty treat It's been 20 years or so since Daniel Miller and friends first dreamed up the idea of throwing a Thanksgiving Dinner for the entire island—for free.

Overly ambitious? Maybe so. But that's what they did.

And, they've been going like gangbusters ever since, without missing a beat. In fact, attendance at the Miller-and-crew-organized no-cost holiday feast, billed as the "Early Thanksgiving Dinner" because it typically unfolds on the Sunday before Thanksgiving Day, is proving to be positively sizzling.

A year ago, more people than ever dropped by to dine on turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, pie and all the traditional T-Day trimmings.

"We had about 400 people show up," Miller said of the 2013

gobble-day gala. This year's Early Thanksgiving Dinner is Sunday, Nov. 23, and doors open at 2 p.m.

The dinner did wander a bit, in its early years, until a former school superintendent offered up Friday Harbor High School Cafeteria and C o m m o n s as a permanent placeholder. That's where Miller and his mates have been makin' Thanksgiving Day magic ever since, and where you'll find them, and a delicious holiday dinner again this year.

he Annual Christmas Block Party at the idyllic Roche Harbor Resort returns for much of the afternoon and evening, Sat., Dec. 13.

Festivities include a Christmas lighted boat parade, photos with Santa, hor d'oevres and drinks at the Madrona Bar and Grill, and outdoor fire pits to warm cold mittens.

The Roche Harbor Chapel will celebrate midnight mass, Christmas Eve, Dec. 24. Also on Christmas Eve is a double showing of Island Stage Left's holiday production "Omnium Gatherum," at the Roche Harbor Pavilion.

Annual 'Turkey Trot' turns ten

Five kilometers might not counteract all that turkey you'll be eating, but it's better nothin', and in might just give you a little more room, and appetite, to work with.

The annual Turkey Trot returns for its 10th year, Thurs., Nov. 27, 9 a.m. This classic community event benefits the Friday Harbor Food Bank, and is fun for everyone involved.

"This is a no stress event," said organizer Paul Hopkins, "It's an easy, no-hassle way to give back to the community."

Hopkins predicts a sunny, 70-degree day for this year's trot. In past years, he notes, it's been windy, and even snowy, but oddly enough there hasn't been a rainy run yet.

Registration is $5 for adults, plus two cans of food, and $2 for youth under 12, plus two cans of food. Registration begins at 8 a.m., at Friday Harbor Suites. The 5K run (3.1 miles) commences and finishes at the Suites.

Well, here's a chance to find out which list you're on from the Jolly 'ol Elf himself. Kris Kringle and company make their 54th consecutive holiday sojourn to San Juan Island aboard the venerable Santa Ship, Saturday, Dec. 20.

That's more than a half-century of riding the waves to spread holiday cheer on a sailing ship in the Salish Sea. That guy does get around, eh?

IMA Unveiling: The Best of the Artists' Registry I

f ever there was an appropriate name for an art exhibition, it is the oneword title given the highly anticipated first show at the San Juan Islands Museum of Art: Unveiling.

The Artists' Registry has been a jewel in IMA's crown for many years, and the dramatic glass and steel building on Spring Street in Friday Harbor will open its doors to showcase them just in time for the holidays.

According to IMA President Jack Yelverton, it is appropriate that local artists' work is the first to hang on the new building's walls. “This is an opportunity for local artists to show their work in a first class environment that we hope will catch the eye of art collectors worldwide," he said.

How did this building get started? The IMA dream was an improbable notion brought to life ten years ago by an

by Matt Dolahite unflappable bunch of San Juan artists with a hare brained idea: to build a fine arts museum that would gain the attention of artists and audiences around the world. They had no money. They had no building.

Still, the tiny museum-without-a-home set up grand exhibitions in venues from theater lobbies to abandoned retail shops. Dedicated volunteers swept, painted, built exhibition space and wooed talent from around the country as they moved from building to building.

After seven years wandering, the peripatetic museum began to pine for a real home. More than a decade later, IMA has found it.

by Lisa McHugh Center, the former EMT garage stood abandoned on Spring Street. The garage building was tall and sturdy, with excellent bones and personality. The potential, invisible to some, was obvious to executive director Charlie Bodenstab and the IMA crew: It's our museum!

Realizing the potential to create a true work of art, local architect Richard Hobbs' added a soaring glass and steel atrium that gives the structure a uniquely dramatic presence at the quiet top end of Friday Harbor's main street.

Plans for the new IMA include workshops that vary greatly in style and price, taught by artists both from the islands and around the world. IMA $ 95 expects that art-loving travelers who come to see the new museum will stay to relish the beauty of the islands. They will sleep at local hotels, eat at local restaurants, shop in local shops - thrilled to discover so many art studios and galleries in this out-of-the-way place.

The 'Elders': takin' it to the streets S

an Juan Island will reverberate once again with the captivating sounds of one of Latin America's most iconic holiday season celebrations.

Bundle up and prepare to be dazzled and delighted. It's the Dance of the Elders, returning to the streets of Friday Harbor, Thursday, Dec. 11.

Highlighted by the "rat-a-tat-tat" of wooden clogs clacking against the blacktop, the colorful procession features dancers dressed in traditional peasant costumes and cartoon-like masks on parade through the town's main thoroughfare. It's ultimate destination? St. Francis Church, on Price Street.

It's origins are somewhat shrouded in mystery, but the Dance of the Elders pre-dates the arrival of Spanish explorers in the "New World" and its roots extended back to rituals of worship of an ancient god of fire associated with the sun, Huehueteotl.

Somewhere along the line, Christian icons were adopted into the Elders Dance and, as a result, the procession has long-included the bearing of the statue of the Virgin Mary to a Catholic church of choice.

The procession begins at the Port of Friday Harbor parking lot, at about 6:30 p.m., and, at a leisurely pace, accompanied by recorded Latin American folk tunes, will meander its way along Spring Street.

While en route to St. Francis, dancers break into formation every so often to perform traditional folk dances, with the explosive sound of their canes and wooden clogs punctuating the chill off the frosty wintertime air.

The Dance of the Elders will be followed the next day by the observance of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass, at 5 p.m., at St. Francis.

The Mass commemorates the fabled apparition of the Virgin Mary in the New World by Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, later sainted by the Catholic Church because of that vision. The area where Juan Diego encountered the apparition, the foothills outside Mexico City, is now a major pilgrimage site with two churches, one built in the 16th Century in honor of Diego's vision of the Virgin Mary, and that can accommodate up to 50,000 worshipers.

But other than that, there's a host of wingedwonders to discover, document and to be bedazzled by in the 2014 Christmas Bird Count.

Here's how it works. Actually, a side note before we get into the mechanics.

Don't take the title too literally, because the Christmas Bird Count, sponsored by the San Juan Islands Chapter of the Audubon Society, won't take place on Christmas Day. It hasn't for a couple

of years, which, despite the title, has turned out to be much more convenient and rather beneficial for all involved (although the birds don't seem to really care one way or the other).

The National Audubon Society allows its local affiliates to conduct their own Christmas Bird Count anywhere between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5. The date of San Juan Islands bird count is Jan. 3. Barbara Jensen, president of the local Audubon Society, says the first weekend in January seems to work well for most.

"Christmas and the days right around it can be so hectic," Jensen said. "So, we started doing it after Christmas, and it seems to be working best for most people."

Indeed it does. About 60 or so people regularly participate in the annual tally of San Juans' fine-feathered friends. And, you needn't be any kind of expert to join in. Heck, you don't even really have to leave your own yard.

"If you're doing it in your own backyard, go out a couple weeks ahead of time so you can get familiar with what kinds of birds you see and when," Jensen suggests.

Sill, she adds that banding together with neighbors or teaming up with those that know what they're doing can help make this wintertime tradition even that much more rewarding. The more the merrier and the better off results will be.

"We try to hook up people with other birders so they might have an opportunity to go out with people who know what they're looking for and what they might see," she said.

Back to the mechanics.

By design and for sake of consistency, the bird count occurs over an imaginary circle measuring 15 miles in diameter. In the San Juans, at the heart of that 15-mile circle is the U of W Friday Harbor Laboratories. Morning hours are typically best for the tally and three-hour increments are preferred. Results are collected by the local Audubon chapter and then forwarded to national headquarters.

Be sure to give Jensen or another local Audubon Society leader a heads-up that you’re down for the upcoming count.

That will help to make for a better distribution of person-power and resources, and a better game plan overall for the day (find contact info below).

Taking part in the bird count can be a lot of fun, but it’s serious business, too. Here’s some history.

Holiday Bazaar The American Legion Auxiliary Holiday Bazaar will be held on Sat., Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Legion Hall on Crescent Beach Drive. Featured will be vendors with wonderful gifts for holiday giving. There will also be a huge bake sale and a yummy soup bistro. In addition, there will be four beautiful baskets to be raffled. Artisan's Faire The 25th Artisan's Faire returns to the Odd Fellows Hall on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s fair will once again offer some of the finest unique handcrafted gifts to holiday shoppers. Holiday Festival of Arts The Holiday Festival of Arts will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Orcas Senior Center. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for photos. Admission is $1 or a donation to the food bank. The festival has 40 artisans so far with space for a few more people. There will be coffee and cider available, goodies at the bake sale and panini sandwiches for lunch. There will be three quilts and a knitted blanket for raffle items. The silent auction includes a two-night stay at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas, a $200 gift certificate from Rosario and a limited edition laser printed football from the Seahawks among other items.

Annual Christmas tree & wreath sale Salmonberry school tree sale Are you looking for a beautiful Christmas tree to brighten up your home for the holiday season? Come to Salmonberry School’s Fifth Annual Christmas Tree Sale. Starting on Thanksgiving weekend, Salmonberry will have a gorgeous selection of trees available for sale.

Look for the trees and the toasty wood stove at the corner of Henry Lane and North Beach Road. There will be several species to choose from, including Noble, Grand, Douglas and Frasier firs, in sizes from table tops to towers.

Most of the trees are harvested from small family farms located in the Skagit Valley and Snohomish. The Lum Farm on Orcas will also be offering live and u-cut trees from their Christmas tree farm. We strive to find healthy, sustainably harvested trees. They are hand selected and freshly cut to ensure that needles stay on your tree right through the season, and they smell wonderful! As a part of this fundraiser, Salmonberry students make a pledge to replant at least one tree for every tree we sell.

When you buy a tree from Salmonberry, you will be supporting the programs and the students of Salmonberry School. Founded in 2001, Salmonberry School offers an academically and experientially rich environment in which confidence, compassion, and responsibility are strengthened through cooperative community learning. After the sale last year, they visited the Beaverton Marsh wetlands rehabilitation project. This site, purchased by the SJC Land Bank, is being restored from a domestic cattle mono-crop grazing pasture to its original diverse wetland habitat. Salmonberry students have visited the site for the past three years, and helped to plant willows, hawthorns, salmonberries and other shrubs. The students checked on their previous plantings, and planted more new trees.

Christmas Trees will be available for purchase at Salmonberry School, 867 North Beach Rd., starting Saturday, Nov. 28. Hours will be 3-5 p.m., Fridays, 10 a.m.-

he Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony is Friday, Dec. 5 from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the Eastsound Village Green. The event is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Every year, despite very cold temperatures islanders can be seen enjoying this tradition of watching a 1,000 lights shining bright. Kids will also get a chance to enjoy presents from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

The Spirit of Giving thrives on Orcas Island L

ast year the Giving Tree at Island Market held 200 tags. Just 13 days before Christmas 30 tags had yet to be pulled. Judy Lingren was not worried. After 14 year of helping with the Giving Tree, Lingren said she has learned a mantra that “everything always works out.”

The idea for the Giving Tree is that customers pick a tag starting Nov. 21 and can purchase the items listed by Dec. 18, but Lindgren said you don’t have to buy everything on the tag.

Items that don't get purchased will be paid for by monetary funds collected through fundraisers. So even if

the tags aren't picked kids will still get presents.

The two main fundraisers are the Lions' Club Chili Cook-off and a raffle for a fully decorated tree that will be delivered to your home. The tree will be at Island Market starting Nov. 21.

Each year forms are sent out to local schools for families that are in

need. They can request any items, but donors are asked to not exceed $100 when making purchases. Monetary items and very gently used items are also accepted. The forms are turned into anonymous tags or wish lists that adorn the Giving Tree located at the market.

This year, the thrift shop Score donated Polly Pocket toys, but they needed to cleaned up. A local Bible study group donated their time to spiff up the toys..

“They are like new now,” said Judy.

It has been neat people coming forward to help and working together to make it happen for these kids.”

Lindgren is assisted on this task of giving with Erin O’Dell of Orcas Family Connections and Amber Paulsen of Kaleidoscope.

Like last year, in addition to the Giving Tree at the market there is the Santa Mailbox. The mailbox serves as a way for families to turn in wish lists for the Giving Tree or for children to write letters to Santa.

For Lingren, helping kids achieve their Christmas wish is a gift that she is happy to give.

“My husband and I struggled when we first started out,” she said. “It's my way to give back to the community I grew up in.”

"A Christmas Carol" at Orcas Center T

he beloved holiday favorite “A Christmas Carol” is back – for five golden nights – with a local cast of more than 70 islanders of all ages.

With original music and lyrics by Jim Bredouw, this redux of the classic heart-warming holiday tale is directed by Jake Perrine and adapted by Deborah Sparks.

Lopez Spirit of Giving Program empowers community T

hroughout the year, the Lopez Island Family Resource Center offers programs and services to support, enrich, educate, and most importantly empower the Lopez community. We recognize the realities of island life; our programs celebrate the advantages and address the challenges of our small, isolated community. The Spirit of Giving Program, now in its 14th year, is an opportunity for the community to join LIFRC in brightening the holidays and showing struggling families and individuals on our island that they matter.

In November, traditional food baskets containing turkeys, fresh vegetables, cranberries, stuffing, rolls, and even homemade pies will be distributed the day before Thanksgiving to individuals and families in need. Last year, 191 individuals from 49 low income households received baskets.

In December, when gift-giving is customary, families with young children can find it very challenging to make ends meet. Kids continue to grow, and that often means warm clothes and footwear are needed. At the same time household heating bills are rising while income levels frequently drop in the slower off-season months. This does not stop kids from holiday dreams, and the “magic of the season” can often feel like one more giant stress for parents!

To help ease the burden for families in our community who are struggling, the LIFRC offers gift cards to families with young children so they can purchase what they really want and need. We know that support combined with empowerment fosters self-sufficiency. Parents relish the opportunity to purchase presents for their own children. It allows a lowincome mother to give her two young children the

Make the Season Bright on Lopez M

ake the season bright on Lopez Island.

Eleven years ago, a group of islanders armed with Christmas cheer and hot chocolate gathered together to sing carols in the Village. As the holiday lights turned on these islanders thought this may be a tradition to keep going Started in 2003 with an informal group of islanders gathering together to drink hot chocolate, eat cookies, sing carols and watch as the holiday lights were turned on – it is still going strong today, whether cold or rainy weather.

The Tree Lighting Ceremony is Friday, Nov. 28, 4:30 - 6 p.m. at the Lopez Village Park and is the official kickoff of the holiday season, and is considered a destination Holiday lights fantastic. Steve Horn photo event for tourists and part-time residents who come to Lopez as part of the extended Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The gathering starts at 4:30 p.m. in the Lopez Village Park at the Water Tower. The event has fires to heat you on the outside, hot chocolate and cookies to toast your belly, and caroling to warm the heart. At 5 p.m. the park is lit, and the surrounding businesses, who stay open for the evening, also light up their shops.

oliday travel can be tricky particularly if you find yourself heading for snow or get caught in icy rain. Make sure you’ve weatherized your vehicle. Check the tires, battery, brakes, hoses, radiator, wipers, heater and all those parts that could compromise the safety of your trip. Keep the fuel tank full, don’t let it drop below half just in case you find yourself in less than favorable road conditions and make sure you’re prepared with jumper cables, chains, road flares and a good spare tire.

Most islanders carry extra blankets and water, just “in case” they miss the ferry but add to that list a flashlight, snacks,

HOLIDAY ART WALK “Gems & Jazz” Friday, Dec. 5 - 6 to 9 pm

Burton Jewelers will feature Gems and Jazz, along with the continuing art show of Max Benjamin, oils and pastels, and Steve Klein, art glass. A special collection of “phenomenal” gems, which have qualities like color change in different lights, star effects and pleochroism will be shown.
