When it comes to food, the San Juan Islands are a rich tapestry of abundance, from sea to shore to farm and forest. You can shuck an oyster at one of three oyster farms, grill a wild-caught salmon or crack a local crab. Taste locally grown wine, pour a cold brew, sip a craft cocktail or refreshing cider from producers on each island. More farm-and-forage-to-table restaurants are serving creative plates featuring everything from beach-gathered sea beans to forest-foraged morels. The “Gourmet Archipelago” is a destination for those who love fresh, local food. More artisan food producers are popping up, from heritage preserves to spicy sauces, lavender-infused dressings and island sea salt. The 10th annual Savor the San Juans is a more-than-a-monthlong celebration of our islands’ bounty, where farmers and chefs showcase
their best at wine dinners, farm tours, cider pressings and grape harvest festivals. The farm tours let you peek into the barns and learn about everything farm, from sheep shearing to heritage apples. Savor’s signature event, Eat Island Grown, a tasting event at Brickworks on October 22nd, will bring together chefs and farmers from Lopez, Orcas and San Juan, showcasing their best tastes made from their favorite ingredients. To cap off the fun this fall, don’t miss the “Hops on the Rock” on November 11, a beer festival in downtown Eastsound, featuring dozens of regional brewers, including island breweries Island Hoppin’ Brewery, San Juan Island Brewing Company, and hopefully Friday Harbor Brewing Company and Lopez Island Brewing Company. Not just about food, Savor is a chance to enjoy the easier pace of autumn at the Orcas Island Film Festival (www.orcasfilmfest.com) from October 6th through 9th, and
the Friday Harbor Film Festival (www.fhff.org), from November 3rd through 5th. The OIFF will show a broad selection of feature-length films, some award-winning, some premier films just waiting for Cannes and the Academy Awards. Three winning filmmakers will screen their shorts that they made in the islands this summer. The FHFF focuses on documentary films about the people and issues of the Pacific Rim region, with Q&As with the filmmakers, a fun gala awards night and kids’ filmmaking program. Both festivals offer chances to hobnob with writers, directors and actors, watch incredible films, and wear your bling to walk down the red carpet. This fall, don’t miss out on these chances to meet your local farmers, winemakers, chefs and other artisans at events on Orcas Island, Lopez Island and San Juan Island. Farmers’ Markets
Farmers, fishers and artists fill the rows of vendors lined up across the Village Green, the Lopez Center lawn and Brickworks in downtown Friday Harbor. Saturdays, from springtime into the fall, bring locals and tourists alike together under the late morning sun to eat locally grown foods and and buy handmade crafts. From furry felted friends to sparkling sea glass jewelry, farmer’s market finds make great souvenirs.

On Lopez you can find the Lopez Island Farmer’s Market from late May until early September next to the Lopez Center for Community and the Arts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Be sure to check it out next spring! For more information, go to www.lopezfarmersmarket.com.
Oddfellows Hall for the months of October and November, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oddfellows Hall is located on Haven Street just south of Main Street. All items sold at both markets are grown or crafted by Orcas Island farmers and artists. Organic produce, crafts, art, jewelry, clothing, pottery, food and drink vendors, and some of Orcas Island’s service organizations (historical museum, master gardeners) are all represented at the farmer’s market. Fabulous fall film festivals There’s no need to travel all the way to Seattle to see ground-breaking films from award-winning filmmakers, just visit the local theater. Both Friday Harbor and Orcas Island have their own film festival for residents to enjoy as tourist season dies down and fall settles in. Orcas Island Film Festival kicks off with a Red Rabbit Farm-hosted fundraiser and farm to table experience on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. The dinner will feature special guest Carl Spence, who is OIFF curator and former Seattle International Film Festival director. Guests will receive a preview of the festival’s hottest new films followed by a Q&A. Dinner is $75 per person and all net proceeds benefit OIFF. Purchase dinner tickets at redrabbitfarm@rockisland.com. From Oct. 6–9, the 2017 festival features 30 films, gala parties and filmmaker panel discussions. Random Howse is the “festival party hub.” The restaurant will host an opening night reception, awards party and after-hours meet-and-greets. It will also provide grab-and-go meals for festival-goers to grab between films. OIFF also features three grant winner films, which are now available for viewing and voting at www.orcasfilmfest.com. This year’s short films are: “It Takes An Island,” by Tashi Litch; “Falling Into Place,” by Einar Johnson; and “RIGGED! A Tail of Corruption,” by Heidi Cuda. From Nov. 3 through 5 in Friday Harbor, guest can take in the fifth annual Friday Harbor Film Festival. Thirty-two feature length and 13 short films make up this year’s selection to be viewed over the course of three days. Other events one the schedule include an opening night gala at 7 p.m.
on Nov. 3 at the Whittier Theatre. The gala will feature the presentation of the Andrew V. McLaglen Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of the late Elouise Cobell, a Blackfoot Tribal community leader and an advocate for Native American self-determination and financial independence Also being honored at this year’s festival is local young filmmaker Dylan D’Haeze of Orcas Island. Farm Tours continued from page 5 Participatory Agriculture project and the Orcas Public School Garden. On the Orcas Farm Tour you can learn about apple and pear preserving, sheep shearing, and hear stories of how students interact with culinary and medicinal herbs. The following weekend, October 7th and 8th, will be the San Juan Island Fall Farm Weekend. It all starts with the Farmer’s Market and annual Farm Parade in Friday Harbor. Highlights include harvesting Siegerrebe grapes at San Juan Vineyards; petting goats, picking flowers, and sampling berries and fresh cider at Aurora and Sweet Earth Farms; and seeing Draft horses at work at Heritage Farm. Wild Bird Bamboo Farm will also provide tours of several species of bamboo with an emphasis on growing techniques.
Our final weekend, October 14th and 15th, takes us to Lopez Island to experience the diverse operations at Midnight’s Farm; sheep dog demonstrations and a weaving studio at Stonecrest Farm; apple cider tasting at Fruit City; and sampling goat cheese at Sunnyfield Farm. Participants can also visit the Lopez Shellfish Farm and experience a scalable, integrated and self-sufficient food production system for families, individuals, or businesses on S&S Homestead Farm.
