All of us at the Sounder, The Journal of the San Juans and the Islands Weekly hope that your holiday celebrations are full of warmth and love.

We publish our annual holiday special to share the many events and celebrations that you and yours might enjoy from Thanksgiving to after New Year’s.

Many of the offerings presented in this guide are longheld island traditions and are a special part of the holiday season.

One of those traditions is the generous spirit of giving to the less fortunate in our community. We encourage you to support the many organizations that devote their time and talents to making all of our lives better — especially during the holiday season.

There is also a plethora of concerts, performances and church events to meet every interest. Check out the stories and calendar of events inside.

Another tradition is represented by the advertisers who make the holiday edition (and every other edition of the paper) possible. Your friends and neighbors in their shops, stores and restaurants want to make your holidays merry, and they need your patronage to make the season bright for themselves, their employees and families.

Islanders support local businesses because those businesses sell quality products at fair prices, and because islanders know that if they don’t buy locally, those businesses simply can’t continue.

Two-thirds of the money you spend on island stays here. For most merchants that money puts food on the table for their families and dresses their children in warm clothes. One hundred dollars spent on San Juan, Orcas or Lopez means a lot to those communities. That same $100 doesn’t have the same effect on the mainland. And the five or 10 percent you think you’re saving by buying off island, instead goes toward ferry fares and fuel prices. Plus, you get the unsavory seasonal experiences of crowded parking lots, empty shelves and long lines at the cash register when you trek off island to make your purchases.

Do yourself and your fellow islanders a favor: shop locally this winter. If you really want to take a ferry, take it to one of the other islands. Tell them the newspaper sent you.

Nov. 22 • 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Eve Service at Orcas Island Community Church. A simple service of gratitude, prayer, and song.

Giving tree at Island Market

A magical part of the year begins when the Giving Tree goes up inside Island Market.

Those festive tags adorning the branches offer everyone the chance to fulfill the seasonal hopes of local kids. You’ll discover requests from Orcas children for basketballs, dancing shoes, art supplies or toys of the latest invention. Some long for books. Others look forward to new rain boots, gloves or longer pants. And there are the kids who yearn for a special experience: tickets to the movies and the like.

Choose one or more tags to make a wish come true for youngsters from newborns to eighteen year-olds. And then sign the nearby registry so that organizers will know that every child’s tag has been chosen. To ensure delivery to the many participating families, presents from the lucky gift-givers will be looked for at Island Market on or before Dec. 15.

If the gifts arrive at Island Market unwrapped, organizers can be confident that the right present will get to the right child. Sending along the child’s tag from the Giving Tree, paper and ribbon with the unwrapped gift is a real help. However, if wrapping brings you joy, please do not hesitate; wrap away!

For those who don’t wish to choose a tag there are many ways to join in the delight of the giving season.

Family needs extend beyond presents and we welcome donations to the Giving Tree at the Island Market or the Resource Center to assist with essentials – winter heating costs, for example. Financial donations for food or gift cards for groceries are especially helpful. There is always a need for a little more ribbon and wrapping paper.

Likewise appreciated are unwrapped new toys to supplement where the need arises.

Children with letters to Santa can post them in the decorated Santa’s mailbox located inside Island Market near the Giving Tree. Each child will receive a personalized letter from Santa if the letters are dropped in the box before Dec. 20. Please include the child’s name, return address, and a phone number.

Holiday concerts to warm your soul Olga Symphony During that time of year beloved for traditions, what could be better than keeping one of the most beloved island traditions of the last 20 years alive and spending the Friday or Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend with the Olga Symphony and their friends? Melinda, Gordon, JP, and Anita will don their finest frocks and tuxes and hold forth with music old and new.

This year, the concert will also include special guests Tom Rawson, Mandy Troxel, and Mel Urbanozo. The show runs Nov. 24 and 25, still at Orcas Center, still at 7:30 p.m., tickets are still just $5 and all proceeds go to local charities.

Leaves of Gold The Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival’s annual Leaves of Gold concert will be held on Monday, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Music Room of the Mansion at Rosario Resort. The Miró Quartet (pictured above), OICMF’s Quartet-in-Residence, joins pianist Jon Kimura Parker in works

Johannes Brahms. The concert, aptly titled “Love Triangle,” will capture the hearts of audience members as they learn about the close relationship between Clara and the very young Brahms as Robert’s physical and mental health deteriorated. The program will also have a few other musical surprises!

The Miró Quartet members, violinists Daniel Ching and William Fedkenheuer, violist John Largess, and cellist Joshua Gindele, are on faculty at the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, where they teach private students and coach chamber music.

A reception in the Mansion Dining Room follows the concert, featuring a buffet of hors d’oeuvres,

desserts, and wines, prepared and served by executive chef Raymond Southern and his staff.

In the spirit of always giving

The Orcas Community Resource Center has the honor and privilege of witnessing the spirit of giving year round as a result of the generosity of our fellow islanders! Each year, donations we receive allow our organization to extend our services exponentially beyond those we provide as result of our local, county, and state contracts and grants. It is through our partnerships with multiple organizations and private donations that we ensure islanders have access to health insurance, mental and physical health services, the means with which to heat their homes, food for their families, assistance when faced with eviction, clothing, dental and vision care, veteran’s benefits, kindergarten readiness, and much more.

The resource center has seen an influx of clients in crisis over the last six months.

Seasonal programs included 56 households participating in the low income energy assistance program (LIHEAP) and our highly anticipated Kindergarten

Transition Program this spring. Summer ended on a very positive and celebratory note with the housing of seven chronically homeless clients!

The fall season was kicked off with the annual shoe drive in partnership with the Sons of the American Legion and launching of the Giving Tree with Island Market. We have assisted 330 households, 1,151 individuals, and provided approximately 3,109 services thus far this year… and we have yet to enter our busiest time of year, the winter months!

As a result of the yearround spirit of giving on Orcas Island, we have the means, the staff, and the time to invest in researching programs, writing grants, and seeking out resources to help Orcas Islanders. We have the time and opportunity to develop relationships not only with our clients, but also with other organizations (local, county, and state) to further enhance our services.

The winter season is a very busy time for the resource center. Please join us in our mission to promote a good quality of life for all Orcas Islanders.

Find the perfect gift at holiday fairs Children’s Christmas Market

Are you looking for a unique and affordable gift for Christmas? Then look no further.

The 5th Annual Childrens’ Christmas Market will be held Saturday, Nov. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Salmonberry School ( across from the senior center), with children age 5 and above from all the schools on the island participating. All items are handmade by the children and range in price from 25 cents to $5. All manner of goods will be for sale, including jewelry, paper goods, plants and always a good selection of freshly baked goods.

Holiday bazaar

American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 93 will hold its annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 2 at the post facility, located at 793 Crescent Beach Drive, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be many local vendors with their fabulous crafts. The auxiliary will have their bake sale: homemade candies, cookies, cakes, pies, and their popular freshly made horseradish! The Soup Bistro will feature two delicious homemade soups, with a roll. The bistro is a great spot to warm up, enjoy friends and savor great food.

the fair for years. This will be the spot to find some of the finest unique handcrafted gifts and gourmet food items made on the island. If you get hungry while shopping, there will be delicious food served downstairs by Charles Dalton and his team from The Kitchen. At around noon on Saturday, the fair will receive a special visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. In keeping with the fair’s tradition, all purchases will earn free raffle tickets for gift basket drawings at the end of the fair.

You need not be present at the drawing to win one of these deluxe baskets, but you do have to come shop at the fair.

Each year the Artisan’s Faire spreads the holiday spirit a little further by making a donation to a local charitable cause. This year the fair is happy to announce that this donation will go to the Orcas Community Resource Center. Its staff and volunteers work hard all year long to ensure that all Orcas Islanders have access to services and support for their well-being.

Salmonberry School holiday events

Salmonberry School is holding its Advent Spiral Walk and Winter Solstice Potluck at Odd Fellows Hall on Sunday, Dec. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. This is a beautiful, reverent seasonal ritual honoring the darkest days of the year and the return of the light. The spiral walk has been a beautiful part of Orcas Island children’s winter experience for more than 30 years. The community is most welcome to come and take part in this tradition. Small donations to help cover costs as well as donations of canned food for the food bank are welcome.

Once again, Salmonberry School will host a Christmas Tree Sale this holiday season. The tree stand on Henry Road, off North Beach Road, will be open Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Nov. 25 until Dec. 17, while supplies last.This sale features locally-sourced, pesticide and chemical-free high-quality trees of many varieties and sizes including the ever popular noble firs, Lum Farm trees and island wildcrafted Douglas firs. All proceeds go to Salmonberry School’s scholarship fund, making quality holistic education possible for all island children, and providing an alternative educational pathway for ages 4 to 12.

Salmonberry School will be gathering food donations on behalf of the Orcas Island Food Bank. Feel free to take donations directly to the food bank or bring them to us prior to Thanksgiving and they will be happy to deliver them for you.

Orcas Thanksgiving

Once again the Odd Fellows will be holding their traditional Community Thanksgiving Dinner, Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, at 4:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall.

Due to record-breaking attendance, we are partnering with the Episcopal Church to ensure no one is turned away. There will be a Thanksgiving Dinner at the church beginning at 5 p.m.

If we exceed our capacity,

anyone who cannot join the Odd Fellows is encouraged to attend the dinner at the Episcopal Church, where you are more than welcome.

Rosario Resort

annual festival of trees Christmas trees return to light up the Moran Mansion at Rosario Resort and Spa during the month of December, decorated by seven local nonprofit organizations.

Sponsored by the resort, the Festival of Trees is designed to be a fundraiser during this holiday season for participating organizations, which include Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, The FunHouse, Friends of Moran State Park, Orcas Island Education Foundation and others.

The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite tree by purchasing votes at $1 per ticket throughout the entire month of December. All voter tickets will also be entered into a raffle to win prizes, including two round-trip tickets from Orcas Island to Seattle on Kenmore Air with a two-night hotel stay, dinner for two at The Mansion Restaurant, and a two-month Rosario spa pass.

All organizations will also receive an additional donation from Rosario Resort.

“These organizations not only create a beautiful display in our lobby each year, but they add such value to our community,” said RosarioGeneral Manager Christopher Peacock.

“I hope everyone comes out to see the trees and leaves a thank-you donation to support each of these groups.”

Orcas Center celebrates the season

Celebrate the season in December with the truly beloved holiday favorite “A Christmas Carol” in December and Good Lovelies in concert on Center Stage in January.

“A Christmas Carol” will run for five performances, Dec. 13-17, 7:30 p.m. with a Saturday matinee on Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. Orcas Center welcomes Good Lovelies back to Center Stage on Jan. 18, 7:30 p.m.

Stage Left holiday tradition

By Stan Matthews, Island Stage Left Island Stage Left’s annual celebration of the Christmas Season has been a much-anticipated holiday tradition on San Juan Island for more than a decade and it’s always a full house on Christmas

Eve. Beginning Dec. 15, the tradition continues with “Omnium Gatherum,” a performance taking its title from a Latin phrase used in England even before the days of Shakespeare, to refer to a “gathering of all sorts” or a “hodge podge.”

By Mullis Center What if you gave a party and everybody came? No, the whole island doesn’t show up, but a complete cross section of the whole island does come together at the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at the Mullis Center.

This will be the 19th annual Thanksgiving Dinner and we hope you choose to take part. So many islanders pitch in to help, and that is good because it takes almost 100 volunteers to make this island family dinner happen. Sometimes there are a dozen people in the kitchen mashing potatoes, chopping salad or washing pots and pans. Just like a big family dinner, there’s always another chore to be done and everyone that wants to can pitch in.

You are invited to participate by baking a pie for the dessert table, roasting one of the thirty-two turkeys in your home oven, or by picking up a spoon and helping to serve the gravy. Or… you can just come for the dinner. Sit with old friends and island family and enjoy a full course Thanksgiving Dinner on Thanksgiving Day, Nov.. 23 at the Mullis Center. Salish Sea Ballet’s ‘Nutcracker’

Children of all ages are invited to Salish Sea Youth Ballet’s “Friday Harbor Nutcracker.” San Juan Island dancers will perform “The Nutcracker” in an intimate tea party setting at Brickworks on Dec. 16 and 17. In its second year, the “Friday Harbor Nutcracker” spins the familiar holiday story with a San Juan Island twist.

From the traditional party scene to the Waltz of the Flowers and the Sugar Plum Fairy, all of your traditional favorites are performed alongside original choreography celebrating

local icons such as orcas and the ferries. Artistic Director Jeanne Peihl has added new choreography to

this year’s show – you won’t want to miss it!

The 45 minute classical ballet performance will be followed by holiday tea and sweets, a pop up Nutcracker gift boutique, and opportunities to meet the characters in costume. Performances take place on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for children 8 and under, including tea and sweets.

Island Lights Festival returns Submitted by the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce The Island Lights Festival returns to Friday Harbor on Dec. 1. The fun-filled evening starts with holiday treats and crafts at The Whale Museum, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Afterwards, head to Memorial Park to join local choirs for caroling while sipping hot chocolate and coffee, provided by the Riptide Cafe. Santa Claus will light the

park’s trees, followed by more caroling, before heading to Brickworks. There, Mark Gardner will take photos with Santa and Island Rec will host a craft activity.

The San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild vendors will also sell local harvest soups, bread, macaroni and cheese, and spiced, local apple cider.

2017 annual Christmas Bird Count The San Juan Islands Christmas Bird Count will be on Saturday, Dec. 30 and is a wonderful way to celebrate the coming of a new year.

The Christmas Bird Count started in 1900 as a protest to the slaughter of birds in the annual holiday event called the “side hunt.” The team that shot the most birds and other small animals was the winner.

Thank ornithologist Frank Chapman, who along with 27 friends in 25 locations, organized the Christmas Day count of live birds instead dead ones.

This protest became National Audubon Society’s annual event, and is now the longest-running citizen science survey in the world, providing critical data on population trends from the tallies of more than 2,300 bird-count circles in many different countries.

Each Audubon chapter chooses a 24-hour time period from the middle of December to early January for their count.The area covered is a 15-mile wide circle of about 177 square miles. The San Juan Islands Audubon circle was created 30 years ago in 1987 with the center at the University of Washington Labs in Friday Harbor. It includes parts

of San Juan, Orcas, Lopez and Shaw. Teams divide the area into units to survey by car, foot and boat. Some people monitor their own backyard, neighborhood or bird feeder. Young and old, experienced and inexperienced birders are welcome. We always need more people to cover many areas.

In the last 30 years we have seen Anna’s Hummingbirds and Eurasian Collared-Doves numbers on the rise, while the population of seabirds and shorebirds has dropped precipitously over the years. Bird populations are indicators of the overall health of our environment. As the database continues to grow and becomes longterm, it is possible to monitor the abundance and distribution patterns of wintering bird populations.

This is a chance to connect with fellow birders, experience winter’s splendor, and introduce newcomers to the magical world of birding. Some birders take a little rest during the count. There is no fee to participate and it is open to birders of all skill levels.

Islands Artisan’s Holiday Market

There will be 65 vendors at the Islands Artisan’s 39th annual Holiday Market from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 24 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 25 at the Friday Harbor Elementary School.

The goal of the event is to raise scholarships for high school students by selling creations by local artists.

Vendors contribute a $50 entrance fee and 10 percent of their gross sales to the fund. Each year, the organization gives out $10,000 to $12,000 to students pursing higher education in the arts.

“We have a lot of people in attendance, but a lot are unaware of the scholarship fundraiser,” said board member Jana Meredith. “The more they buy, the more kids we can help.”

Graduating seniors from any accredited high school in the county can apply. Students interested in any visual art medium can apply in the spring by presenting three pieces of art and an essay.

SJCT presents shows, new and old

By Jan Bollwinkel, SJCT promotion director Traditions, classics and twists of contemporary take starring roles in events, showcased at San Juan Community Theatre throughout the holiday season.

The theatre kicks off December with Holiday Festival 2017 — its biggest fundraiser of the year since 1989. The Saturday, Dec. 2 event features the ever-charismatic auctioneer Jay Fiske; silent- and live-auction items (including many travel and dining experiences); and new twists, including gourmet food from Coho restaurant and musical entertainment. Be entranced as the theater is transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland and embrace the joy of the holidays with theater

and island friends. Tickets are $100 each.

San Juan Island’s annual holiday choral concert by the San Juan Singers at 7:30 p.m., S a t u r d a y, Dec. 9 and 2 p.m., S u n d a y, Dec. 10, features the “The Seven Joys of Christmas” by Kirke Mechem, accompanied by a small chamber ensemble. The Joy of love, bells, Mary, children, the new year, dance, and song will be represented by a Christmas carol or winter anthem in this suite of songs. Thanksgiving, Nov. 25, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the annual Lopez Preschool Holiday Bazaar in the Lopez School gym. A featured event for nearly 40 years, the bazaar offers a variety of thoughtful, finely made local gifts, delicious food, photos with Santa and a raffle featuring over 60 fabulous prizes.

“The bazaar is the main fundraiser for the co-operative preschool,” said preschool president Becca Peter. All proceeds go toward operating costs, providing scholarships to families in need, classroom enrichment activities and materials. Many studies have shown that quality preschool significantly improves student performance in kindergarten and beyond. Lopez is fortunate to have such a program affordable for all islanders. Preschool is the first step in setting students up for educational success.

Every bazaar vendor donates a significant portion of proceeds to the pre-

school. All funds raised by the raffle and food sales go directly to the preschool.

There will be over 50 vendors at the bazaar offering amazing homemade goods, local products and fine arts and crafts. The event will have something to suit everyone’s fancy.

On top of that, the festive atmosphere can put even The Grinch in a holiday mood. Volunteers set up and bedeck the gym in merry and bright decorations.

Raffle prizes include onand off-island overnight stays, gift baskets of local food and gifts, a Seattle Sounders gift box, passes to the Altitude Trampoline park for 10, Lopez Cross

Fit, clothing, and gift certificates to numerous local and off-island businesses.

This year’s gift certificates feature six hours landscaping, eight hours landscaping, Lopez Coffee Shop, a two-person kayak trip for Cascadia Tours, the hours house cleaning, Holly B’s, 17 yards of wood chips from Rendon Home Services, Lopez Bookshop, and many, many more. Raffle tickets may be purchased at the Lopez Village Market most weekends and from any parent with a child in preschool. You can also buy raffle tickets at the bazaar.

Holiday Events From humble beginnings more than years ago, the Lopez Village Holiday Lighting and Gathering is now a family tradition for many Lopez residents. This event kicks off the local holiday season Island-style, providing a community oriented experience, open to both locals and visitors. Everyone comes together to celebrate family, friends and community. If the weather cooperates participants are treated to a stunning sunset over Fisherman Bay, while they enjoy holiday music, caroling, bonfires, cookies and hot cocoa. The Village Park and surrounding businesses participate, not only in decorations but often with extended hours of operation and specials. At a designated time a ‘switch’ is thrown and the village comes alive with festive trees, reindeer, stars and snowflakes. At the same time the Ferry Landing erupts in holiday colors, marking Port and Starboard for our faithful ferry workers.

Nov. 24 • Lopez Island Chamber of Commerce Torchlight parade, food provided by local businesses, caroling, and lighting the lights of the village. Dress warmly – we have a great time no matter the weather!

The Spirit of Giving Program offers families with children gift cards, food vouchers, toys generously donated by Sunset Builders Supply, quilts handmade by the Enchanted Quilters and sweets donated by Just Heavenly Fudge, as well as gift baskets and homemade baked goods put together by church groups. Last year, 40 families purchased what their family wants and needs for 86 children, empowering them to make their children’s wishes come true.

There are several ways to contribute to the Spirit of Giving Program. Giving trees with tags for gift certificates will be at Blossom,The Galley Restaurant, Islanders Bank, Lopez Bookshop, Lopez Library, Lopez Post Office, Lopez Village Market, Southend General Store, Sunset Builders, LIFRC, local churches, the InterIsland Crafts Affair, and the Preschool Bazaar.

Many of us think of the holidays as a joyful, magical time of year on our little island. We picture abundant food, plentiful gifts, and lots of family and friends. But for others, the holidays are a stressful and difficult time.

Almost 900 individuals do not have enough income for basic needs*. As winter approaches, this gets worse as other expenses, particularly high heating bills, increase.

How does the Lopez Island Family Resource Center (LIFRC) make a difference? The LIFRC offers year-round programs to support the Lopez community. This past summer, scholarships rose to an alltime high of $14,100 for 98 local youth, enabling them to be part of enriching activities thanks to the generosity of donors and organizations.

Tight household budgets mean the demand for the Lopez Fresh foodbank has grown. Thanks to generous donations from stores and neighbors, 300 individuals receive nutritious food each month. The new gleaning program has harvested 4,000 pounds of apples and pears to increase the food available. Yet, the refrigerator is often still empty.

To help ease holiday stress, the LIFRC hosts the Thanksgiving Meal Program and the holiday Spirit of Giving program.

The Thanksgiving Meal Program provides food baskets to individuals and families in need. These baskets contain turkeys, stuffing, rolls, vegetables (mostly local!), and pies made by churches, schools, and
