R EN É J U L I E N Born in Liège, Belgium, on June 18, 1937, René Julien studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège, where he was appointed professor at the remarkably young age of 23. Among his early achievements were the design of the Fertilizer Pavilion for the Belgian Ministry of Agriculture at Expo 58 in Brussels, a monumental mural for Coca-Cola Brussels, a tapestry for the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and numerous other public commissions. In 1967, he was appointed Director of the Royal Academy of Fine

Arts of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode in Brussels. During this period, he created his first bronze sculptures. Already established as a painter and sculptor, he expanded his artistic practice in 1970 to include jewellery and sculptural objects, producing tableware and decorative works that were exhibited in Paris, as well as at Galerie Brachot in Brussels and Knokke-Le-Zoute. A documentary entitled René Julien: His Life and Work was produced in 1977. 4

His career was marked by numerous exhibitions, including a one-man show at the Liège Biennale of Contemporary Art, where he received both the City Prize and the Public Prize. During this period, he also completed many important commissions, including works celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and a sculpture for the Amnesty International Hall in the Parliament of the BrusselsCapital Region. In 1989, he was appointed Inspector to the Visual Arts Commission of the French Community of Belgium. In 1990, he created the “Danations” series of bronze and silver sculptures. From

that year onward, he devoted himself exclusively to sculpture. His major public works include The Flight of Wallonia, a fivemetre high monumental sculpture in Liège; a group of eight female figures adorning the Charlemagne Building of the European Communities in Brussels; Valérie with Hoop at the Château de La Hulpe; the two monumental sculptures The Commuters at Brussels Airport; The Genius of the Royal Galleries, created for the 150th anniversary of the Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries in Brussels; and sculptures for the gardens of Beaune, among many others. His sculptural work has been the subject of the book Around an Awakened Dream (Autour d’un rêve éveillé) and a documentary film The Breath of the Dream (Le souffle du rêve), directed by Gérard Corbiau. www.renejulien.com

R O S ET T E D E ST E FA N O As a multidisciplinary artist, Rosette De Stefano (born 1955) works across sculpture, ceramics, installation, and graphic arts. Her practice explores the relationships between material, memory, and transformation, with environmental concerns and the reuse of materials at its core. Her monumental installations, created from reclaimed materials, reflect an ongoing exploration of heritage, transmission, and the capacity of materials to generate new meanings. The Seven Doors, conceived from the former doors of the old prison of Mons and exhibited at BAM (Beaux-Arts Mons), is one of the most emblematic examples of this approach. Through this installation, De Stefano pays tribute to Paul Verlaine while examining themes of confinement, transition and memory.

Her sculptures investigate the tension between geometry and organic form, structure and fragmentation, combining technical mastery with formal experimentation. The Geometry Red series, devoted to the deconstruction of the rectangle, exemplifies her sustained reflection on form and processes of transformation—an exploration that defines her artistic practice as a whole. Alongside her installation practice, Rosette De Stefano has developed an extensive body of work in ceramics. The ceramics are conceived as sculptures, built by hand in clay and glazed. For René Julien, jewelry was never separate from his art. His first experiments in gold and silver date from 1973, at a moment when painting and sculpture were already deeply intertwined in his practice. By the mid-1970s, his jewelry had developed into a distinctive sculptural language of its own, culminating in increasingly figurative pendants and objects. As Bernard de Mello observed, Julien’s jewels formed “un trait d’union entre sa peinture et sa sculpture” - a link between two artistic expressions. They occupy, in his words, “à la lisière de ces deux expressions artistiques,” translating the sensuality of painting and the physical presence of sculpture into the intimate scale of the jewel. The human figure, and particularly the female form and the face, became recurring subjects. Gold and silver allowed Julien to compress his sculptural vocabulary into remarkably small dimensions, while retaining his fascination with movement, gesture and expression. A face barely suggested in precious metal could acquire an extraordinary psychological presence. Julien’s jewels therefore belong to the same artistic universe as his sculptures: they transform the human figure into an exploration of movement, tenderness and vitality. Yet their smaller scale introduces another dimension - intimacy. The sculpture leaves the pedestal and becomes something worn, held close to the body, and encountered through touch as well as sight. His jewels are consequently best understood not as secondary objects within his oeuvre, but as miniature sculptures: concentrated expressions of the artist’s enduring fascination with the human form.

Ceramics Through her ceramics, Rosette De Stefano develops a practice in which form and material take centre stage. Her pieces reflect a careful exploration of volume, texture and surface, where the artist’s hand remains visible and becomes an essential part of each work’s identity. The clay is shaped, modelled, carved and transformed to reveal forms distinguished by their organic character and sculptural presence. Glazes then enter into dialogue with these volumes, accentuating reliefs, revealing irregularities and introducing subtle variations that make each piece unique. Rather than seeking a perfectly uniform surface, the artist embraces an expressive materiality, allowing nuances and imperfections to bear witness to the creative process. This approach gives her ceramics a quality that is both functional and sculptural. Bowls, vessels and open forms transcend their original purpose to become objects of contemplation in their own right. In Rosette De Stefano’s work, ceramics emerge from a balance between the discipline of form and the spontaneity of gesture, between what is deliberately controlled and what the material itself inscribes into the work.
