About Collective Collective is a contemporary, visual arts organisation that delivers an exciting and ambitious programme of new exhibitions, commissions and projects.

Collective was established in 1984 to support new and emergent artists and exhibit their work in Edinburgh. Now Collective commissions new work by artists who are at a pivotal stage in their development.

Over the next two years, Collective will be making the City Observatory complex its new home, opening the whole site to the public for the first time, placing contemporary art in the heart of Edinburgh.

Factish Field is a yearlong collaboration between Collective and LUX. Looking at artists’ film-work and anthropology; it has included talks, screenings, commissions and exhibitions.

Ruth Ewan and Astrid Johnston Memorialmania 54 mins Narrated by Tam Dean Burn and Ruth Milne For the first in the series of Observers’ Walks, Ruth Ewan and Astrid Johnston concentrated on the monuments and geology of Edinburgh’s Calton Hill. Centering around the Political Martyrs’ Monument, this tour reveals the stories behind this glaciated landscape and the rocks we have placed upon it, inviting us to re-engage with the rich diversity of history on Calton Hill.

Satellites Programme includes five solo presentations by selected Scotland based, emergent practitioners and two projects developed by interns.

This programme is specifically developed to facilitate artists at this pivotal point in their career through peer review, professional development, mentoring, exhibitions and events.

All Sided Games is a series of off-site commissions, placing artists in and around venues built or used for the Edinburgh 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games and in venues to be used for the Glasgow 2014 Games. It connects artists and communities to make work of mutual interest.

Anti-VWAP discussion event Thursday 23 January 6–8pm In this discussion event, three key specialists who have contributed to Goldin+ Senneby’s Collective project will talk about what they do and how they have been involved.

Speakers include: Philip Grant (anthropologist & former equity fund manager), Donald MacKenzie (sociologist) and Mark Jeary (actor).

Factish Field Symposium Friday 21 February 1–5pm Hunter Lecture Theatre, Edinburgh College of Art. To coincide with Bertille Bak’s Factish Field exhibition, this symposium will explore ideas of art-ethnography. An invited panel of artists and anthropologists will present their ideas on art and ethnography and how they apply this to their own practice.

Bertille’s 2008 film Faire le mur, will be presented alongside new tapestries created by the participants in the film. Faire le mur follows the inhabitants of Barlin, through their last revolt against the development and subsequent raised rents in their town. The tapestries were passed from house to house while plotting the rebellion and sewn collectively. These tapestries are based on paintings by artists including; Poussin, Goya and Girodet and are classic depictions of revolution and lost paradise.

Gallery Tours Wednesdays at 1pm Collective’s dedicated team of Gallery Assistants and exhibition staff will lead weekly informative tours of the exhibitions.

Factish Field Project 2 | Bertille Bak Faire le mur 18 January – 2 March 2014 Preview Friday 17 January 5–7pm For the second Factish Field exhibition Collective presents work by Bertille Bak. Bertille is an artist based in Paris who works predominantly in film; her work draws on her observations of the communities she has worked with, looking at their rituals, gestures and objects.

David Osbaldeston 15 March – 27 April 2014 Preview Friday 14 March 5–7pm David Osbaldeston is a UK based artist who will produce a new installation for the City Dome. His work often takes a sideways glance into established forms of communication where the ‘familiar’ is often re-imagined and constructed. He is interested in how linguistics might affect our understanding of fictional realities and how information systems and diagrams can provide a basis for alternative readings.

Collective has moved to a new venue at the City Observatory complex on Calton Hill. Situated in the heart of Edinburgh, it is a few minute’s walk from Waverley railway station.

Calton Hill is accessible on foot from Waterloo Place, and Royal Terrace.

Bedwyr Williams 28 March Bedwyr Williams will produce the second in the series of Obsevers’ Walks, creating a series of stories, which take place at a local hotel.

Tris Vonna Michell From August 2014 The third Observers’ Walk will be by Tris Vonna Michell and will be available from August 2014.

Collective has been working closely with Dane Sutherland over the last few months on his curatorial project which will be launched in May and we are looking forward to presenting the first two exhibitions by Catrin and Kathryn.

All Sided Games is very active over Spring 2014.

March sees the production of two new filmworks by Cristina Lucas and Florrie James. Cristina is in Edinburgh to film a 100-metre race run by people aged 1 to 100 and Florrie is working with families in Glasgow for filming later in the year.

In April, Nils Norman hosts a ‘Play Summit’– in Glasgow, as part of GI 2014 – exploring the state of play and playgrounds in Scotland. Mitch Miller moves from Edinburgh to Glasgow, to produce new ‘dialectograms’ in the city.

Jacob Dahlgren’s no conflict, no irony (I love the whole world), 2013, took place in October at Meadowbank Sports Centre.

Families from across Edinburgh designed and carried a 100-metre banner from Meadowbank to Salisbury Crags.
