About Collective Collective is a contemporary, visual arts organisation that delivers an exciting and ambitious programme of new exhibitions, commissions and projects.

Collective was established in 1984 to support new and emergent artists and exhibit their work in Edinburgh. Now Collective commissions new work by artists who are at a pivotal stage in their development.

Over the next two years, Collective will be making the City Observatory complex its new home, opening the whole site to the public for the first time, placing contemporary art in the heart of Edinburgh.

Camille Henrot Grosse Fatigue 10 May – 16 June 2014 Collective will screen Camille Henrot’s ambitious film work Grosse Fatigue, a film for which she won the Silver Lion at 55th Venice Biennale in 2013.

Grosse Fatigue attempts to tell the story of the universe’s creation from a computer desktop and using the collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.

Kathryn Elkin Mutatis Mutandis 29 March – 11 May 2014 Kathryn Elkin often works with performance, writing and video. For Collective’s Satellites Programme Kathryn presents a new video and installation that explores the potential for abstraction and misdirection in the combination of language, object, body and memory.

Dane is working in partnership with Punctum Records to publish and distribute this project.

Laura Yuile Conversation of Monuments 27 May – 29 June 2014 Satellites Programme Intern Laura Yuile will conduct a public research project including knowledge exchange with visitors to Collective.

Considering our shifting conceptions of time, space and history, Laura will collate research to develop a proposal for a new monument for the city.

All Sided Games is a series of commissions, placing artists in and around venues built or used for the Edinburgh 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games and in venues to be used for the Glasgow 2014 Games. It brings people together with artists to make new work of mutual interest.

Observers’ Walks is a series of downloadable audio guides specially created by artists to be listened to on Calton Hill.

This exhibition forms part of GENERATION, a national programme taking place in the summer of 2014 that will celebrate the wealth of contemporary art that has developed in Scotland over the last 25 years.

Dane Sutherland Exploit.zzxjoanw.Gen Available from 30 May 2014 Exploit.zzxjoanw.Gen is a new audio project by Satellites Programme Intern, Dane Sutherland. He has worked with a number of leading artists to create new music, sound artworks and texts which will be available to purchase as a limited edition USB stick designed by Plastique Fantastique, or as a free digital download.

David Osbaldeston The Measure of All Things 15 March – 27 April 2014 The Measure of All Things is a new installation created

by David Osbaldeston that combines familiar forms with more abstract information and language. The exhibition highlights the divide between language and its visual representation and offers a dryly-humorous take on the ultimately immeasurable status of the art-work and how it might be read or understood.

Satellites Programme is Collective’s development programme for emergent artists and practitioners based in Scotland.

Ross Sinclair 20 Years of Real Life 28 June – 31 August 2014 Preview: Saturday 28 June 2014 6-8pm 2014 marks the twenty-year anniversary of Ross Sinclair’s Real Life projects. Ross’s exhibition at Collective will provide a timely opportunity to reflect on his twenty years of work, while firmly positioning it in the present and imagining possible futures.

Collective has moved to a new venue at the City Observatory complex on Calton Hill. Situated in the heart of Edinburgh, it is a few minutes' walk from Waverley railway station.

Calton Hill is accessible on foot from Waterloo Place, and Royal Terrace.

Bedwyr Williams Outwith 20mins Performed by Hilary Lyon Outwith by Bedwyr Williams is the second in the Observers’ Walks series. The audio guide takes the listener through a series of stories created by the artist, which are all set in a local hotel, visible from Calton Hill.

Ruth Ewan and Astrid Johnston Memorialmania 54 mins Narrated by Tam Dean Burn and Ruth Milne In Memorialmania, Ruth Ewan and Astrid Johnston concentrated on the monuments and geology of Edinburgh’s Calton Hill.

by Outset Scotland. The tracks are available to download from Collective’s website or mp3 players can be borrowed from our reception during opening hours.

Jacob Dahlgren | Florrie James Cristina Lucas | Mitch Miller | Nils Norman All Sided Games is in a busy period of production. We have just completed Cristina Lucas’ project, which brought people of all ages together to take part in a 100-metre race.

There will be another opportunity to see the banner that was made through Jacob Dahlgren’s project no conflict, no irony (I love the whole world) on 14 June as part of the celebrations for the Queen’s Baton Relay at Meadowbank Sports Centre.

Florrie James and Mitch Miller continue to work on projects throughout the spring. More information on these and all projects is available on our website.

We are also excited to be producing Play Summit with artist Nils Norman and art and architecture collective Assemble, which is part of Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art.

Events Nils Norman & Assemble Play Summit 12 – 14 April 2014, 10am-6pm Glasgow Green Play Summit is a three-day event with artist Nils Norman and art & architecture collective Assemble, which considers the state of play in Scotland and beyond. With free talks and workshops, and a symposium bringing together leading thinkers and practitioners working in play from around the world, along with play ventures from across Scotland.

This will run alongside free outdoor play on Glasgow Green by Baltic Street Adventure Playground, a new project currently being built in Dalmarnock by Assemble.
