Exhibitions Satellites Programme exhibitions can be visited during gallery opening hours.

Wednesday Tour – 3pm Every Wednesday during exhibitions join a member of Collective staff for an informative tour of the current exhibition and the City Observatory site. The tours are drop in so no need to book in advance.

Observers’ Walks Observers’ Walks can be downloaded from Collective's website before your visit or mp3 players can be borrowed from our reception during opening hours.

MILK Open-Air Café Collective has an open-air café run by MILK, with a seasonally changing menu including hot soup and toasted sandwiches, all freshly prepared using only natural ingredients.

Open Monday – Sunday, 10am—4pm.

Open: Tuesday to Sunday October – March 10am—4pm April – September 10am—5pm

Lunchtime Meal Deal Every Wednesday alongside a tour of the current exhibition get a sandwich, toastie or soup and hot or cold drink for £5.

Collective is based at the City Observatory complex on Calton Hill. Situated in the heart of Edinburgh, it is a few minutes' walk from Waverley railway station.

Calton Hill is accessible on foot from Waterloo Place and Royal Terrace.

During the development of the City Observatory complex Collective has commissioned a series of research based, off-site projects. Two projects led by artists Petra Bauer and James N Hutchinson will be developed over the next year.

This programme of commissions will include discussions, screenings and walks, providing opportunities for artists and audiences to engage with our locality and consider new ways for people to work together.

Petra Bauer and SCOT-PEP Nothing about us without us Central to Petra Bauer’s ongoing collaboration with SCOT-PEP, a sex worker led charity in Edinburgh dedicated to the promotion of sex workers’ rights, is the question: how do you act politically when you cannot be public? The group will continue to listen, share and test ideas about labour rights and filmmaking strategies.

James N Hutchinson A Calton Hill Asterism James’ research project considers different forms of observation and fieldwork.

He will concentrate on three points of his asterism, investigating the life, work and travels of historical figures connected to Calton Hill, reflecting ideas of scientific study, amateurism and the international trade of goods and knowledge.

The layered nature of our site has proved a fertile landscape for both artists and audiences. Through our Observers’ Walks, Constellations and Satellites Programmes we have been working with artists to explore the City Observatory’s heritage and think through the historic, aesthetic and socio-political panorama of our city, enabling insights into the past, present and future.

We are excited to be so close to opening the new City Observatory to the public for the first time in its history. Through our programme of exhibitions, events and walks we invite you to join us in this collective site for observation and reflection.

Collective is embarking on the next big journey of its history, making a new kind of City Observatory and we invite you to accompany us.

Collective began in a small shop unit on Edinburgh’s High Street in 1984, initiated by artists to address their need to see, show and take part in the wider art world. Since then Collective has played a pivotal part in the local and international cultural landscape. We follow artists' ideas, making their vision a reality, presenting international artists in Scotland for the first time. Collective work with and for artists, communities, schools and others to identify and nurture mutuality, exchange and crucially support a cohort of emergent artists based in Scotland every year on our unique development programme. We are proud of our achievements and continue to stay true to our mission, to bring people together around the production and presentation of new visual art.

In 2013 Collective moved to the iconic, but under threat, City Observatory complex on Calton Hill. Currently the second phase of development is underway to make the complex Collective’s permanent new home, offering exciting possibilities for artists and audiences alike.
