Inspiring the Next Generation WITH SANDRA DUARTE

Imagine being 17 again and having the knowledge you have now. Wouldn’t life be a lot easier and less stressful? I can still remember

what it was like growing up in South

Western Sydney, an only child, and

daughter of immigrant parents. As an average student, I was haunted by a lack of self-belief; everything I wanted seemed to require someone better than I was. After completing my HSC, I struggled to find work. After applying for many jobs in advertising (my dream career at the time), I finally got an interview for an admin position with a publishing company on the North Shore. They liked me but rejected me on the grounds I had no experience. Something seized me in that

interview, and I begged the Director

to take a chance on me for a month

unpaid and allow me to prove

myself. I got the job, and I worked

“The youth of today

are the leaders of

tomorrow.” – Nelson Mandela

for the company for over 17 years. I worked my way up the corporate

ladder from ‘Girl Friday,’ which they

called admin roles in those days, to

General Manager.

The start of my career journey came from one person believing in

me and giving me that opportunity.

This helped build my self-esteem

and confidence and allowed me to shine and discover my gift for leadership and people

management. It’s not easy being young in today’s world. As a mother of two daughters aged 17 and 20 and an employer, I see the daily challenges of finding their place and purpose in society. They are also facing difficulties like low self-esteem, peer pressure, mental health issues, bullying, family discord, inadequate employment opportunities, and social media’s harsh realities.

I am Ready inspire create

opportunity

Are we as a society doing

enough to support them? It has been proven that young

people who feel supported by their

family, friends and communities are less likely to become

incarcerated as adults and more

likely to lead healthy, happy and

productive lives. Having never forgotten how being given an opportunity and having positive role models changed my life, I am now on a quest to make a difference one school student at a time. As the CEO of a leading Australian Print Manufacturing company, Centrum Group, I created an industry site tour program called “I AM READY.”

To book a site tour, email: sitetour@centrum-group.com.au

I created this simple initiative with the sole purpose of inspiring,

enabling, and developing

workplace opportunities for the

next generations within Australian

Print Manufacturing. We open our

doors and their eyes to a range of new career options they didn’t

know existed. As a proud Board member of

Canterbury Bankstown Chamber

of Commerce, I am excited to be working with Wally Mehanna to

lead the upcoming CBCC Youth Program – CEO for a Day! Which is another fantastic opportunity

to mentor and inspire teenage

students from Years 9-12 to

broaden their horizons and be

hopeful about the future.

Please join us! Just like I needed someone to give me an

opportunity, young people need

support and role models they can

be inspired by, role-models like you. We are calling on all CEO’s,

Business and Community leaders; if

you are interested in helping make a difference in the lives of today’s

youth, then please email ceo@

cbchamber.org.au Together we can give them hope and build their confidence to be brave enough to ask for opportunities so that they can live their dreams and the world can benefit from the gifts they have to

that they can teach us a thing or

A NEW COURT “THE FEDERAL CIRCUIT AND FAMILY COURT OF AUSTRALIA” On 1 September 2021, the Federal Circuit Court of Australia and the Family Court of Australia merged to create the “Federal Circuit Court and Family Court of Australia”. The overarching purpose of the joinder of the courts is set out in Rule 1.04 of the new court rules, which states the following: (1) to facilitate the just resolution of disputes according to law and as quickly, inexpensively and efficiently as possible

(2) Parties to family law proceedings must conduct the proceeding (including negotiations for settlement of the dispute to which the proceeding relates) in a way that is consistent with the overarching purpose; (3) A party’s lawyer must, in the conduct of a proceeding before the court (including negotiations for settlement) on the party’s behalf; a. take account of the duty imposed on the party referred to in subrule(2); and b. assist the party to comply with the duty

The aim of the new Court is to have matters resolved within 12 months of them being filed, as well as parties saving on excessive legal costs from matters being kept too long in the Court system. This is achieved by placing a greater emphasis of family dispute resolution for both property and parenting matters, as well as placing an emphasis on Legal Practitioners to provide advice to their clients in relation to the benefits of family dispute resolution. The main changes that have been incorporated are as follows: 2 Divisions being created; There being a greater emphasis on the delegation of powers to Senior Registrar to be able to run and manage interim hearings as well as procedural hearings; A greater emphasis on family dispute resolution; matters being screened at the initial filing stage to identify any risk issues for litigants, and for those matters that have serious risk issues to undergo a separate pathway. We have found the new Court structure to be beneficial to our clients as there is a greater emphasis on family dispute resolution, rather than ongoing litigation. 1

We are happy to speak to anyone wanting further information about how we can help them

with their Family Law Matters. Particularly if anyone has been impacted by the Covid-19 restrictions and is not able to facilitate Family Law Orders, the Court has created a “Covid-19 list” which deals directly with these matters. Feel free to contact us on 02 7202-2312 or send us an email at antoinette@khalilfamilylawyers.com.au.
