Engaging directly with our local members and business leaders, including insightful conversations with Eddy Nader, Managing Director of NPG Retail - Urbanista Café & Convenience, has reinforced my belief that the potential of our night economy extends far beyond the usual pubs and clubs scenes.
Our night economy should be vibrant and diverse, featuring dining, theatre performances, and unique retail experiences, offering numerous opportunities for business growth and community unity.
It's not only about entertainment; it includes vital services and industries that sustain our city's dynamism and prosperity 24/7, such as 24-hour stores, dependable transport, active night markets, and healthcare.
Some deterrents may be streaming platforms, Uber Eats, and e-commerce. The COVID-19 pandemic has accustomed us to solitude and indoor living, yet this shift has adverse effects for many. As inherently social beings, we require interaction therefore, engage actively in rejuvenating and expanding our local economy.
So, what steps can we take to nurture this environment? Ensuring supportive policies and infrastructure like safe, well-lit streets and robust transport options is fundamental. But equally important is fostering collaboration among our businesses, government, and residents to tackle any challenges head-on and cultivate an inclusive atmosphere.
By championing a diverse cultural landscape with events, festivals, and arts initiatives, we can draw more people to experience the night-time allure of Canterbury Bankstow. Together, we can forge a dynamic and inclusive night-time environment that boosts our economy and enriches our community's quality of life.

The Canterbury Bankstown Chamber of Commerce was very pleased to attend the East Hills Community Cabinet with the NSW Premier, The Hon. Chris Minns MP, and the NSW Cabinet Ministers on Friday, 15 March 2024 at Club Condell Park.
It was great to see members and locals engaging with the Hon Chris Minns Premier of NSW, Ministers and local representatives and we take this opportunity to express our thanks to Kylie Wilkinson MP State Member for East Hills for hosting us all.
Community Cabinet provides an opportunity for community members to engage with the NSW Premier and Cabinet Ministers about key local priorities and issues that concern them most!
We were very happy to see many of our CBCC local members participate in a oneon-one meeting with the appropriate minister taking this opportunity to discuss and relay their business-related issues with proposing solutions.
CBCC took the opportunity to meet with the planning minister the Hon Paul Scully MP and submitted a 5 POINT HOUSING ACTION PLAN. We are most importantly very pleased to play a supportive role in engaging the members and local community for this meeting.

Women and girls are breaking new ground in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics every day.
In line with the International Women’s Day 2024 of DigitALL, the CBCC aims to encourage women and girls to be more than observers of STEM and be active participants. How can we as a community encourage more women and girls to be involved with STEM?
Verbal comments that can impact an individual’s dignity & opportunities for employment.
"You're not strong enough to do this job "
This comment disregards the wide range of construction roles that require different skills, including many that do not rely on brute strength
"Are you sure you can handle this job and your family responsibilities?"
This implies that women cannot balance a demanding job and personal life, a question rarely posed to men
Clients prefer to see men on the job site."
This suggests that the presence of women in trades is somehow less professional or acceptable, perpetuating gender discrimination.
"We need to hire a woman to meet diversity quotas."
Framing a woman’s employment as merely fulfilling a quota undermines her skills, qualifications, and contributions to the team.
"This job might be too technical for you."
Assuming women lack technical skills based on gender alone is both unfounded and dismissive of their qualifications and experience
YES WORDS HURT
Such comments are not only hurtful but also reflect and perpetuate systemic barriers that women face in maledominated fields like the trades
The construction industry values skill, knowledge, and the ability to perform tasks efficiently and safely, more than physical attributes such as height Small or short men can be as capable as any other individuals in performing construction tasks, especially in roles that require technical skills, precision, and attention to detail rather than brute strength alone Modern construction techniques and machinery have made the industry more accessible to people of various physical builds and strengths Regarding women, it’s similar, while the industry has been historically male-dominated and certain stereotypes persist about who is 'fit' for construction work, discrimination based on physical characteristics or gender is increasingly recognised as outdated and unacceptable
Workplaces are subject to laws and regulations that prohibit discrimination and encourage diversity and inclusion
