COLIN POWELL SCHOOL FOR CIVIC AND GLOBAL LEADERSHIP
Lifting Leaders
Shifting Power | Transforming Society
2015 COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS BY
GENERAL COLIN L. POWELL
Some of you may know by now what you want to do with your life, what your life’s work will be. But many of you may still be unsure, still looking. You may change your mind several times along the way. Wherever you go, whatever you do, wherever fate and destiny take you, you know you will go there well prepared by the superb education you received here at The City College of New York. As each of you looks forward to your future, make sure that you give a good measure of your time and your talent and your treasure to others, to those in need. The need to serve others in our society has never been greater. Money and position will or will not follow you, but always make sure that satisfaction is what you’re seeking. Satisfaction, every day. You can go home at night saying I did my very best, I did my very best. Make sure you have a purpose in life that goes beyond just position and money. And that purpose has to be rooted in the willingness and the desire and the intent to help others, to serve others.

MESSAGE FROM
The Co-Chairs and The Dean
Dear Graduates, Families, and Friends,
Welcome, and congratulations!
Today, with great pride, we celebrate the Colin Powell School Class of 2026. You are an extraordinary group, and seeing you gathered here is a reminder of everything this School stands for and everything we aspire to be.
You came to City College with questions about how the world works and how it can work better. You have debated difficult ideas in the classroom, engaged with communities beyond campus, and pushed yourselves to think more intentionally about your place in the world. That work is not always easy, but it is important.
The fields you are entering need people who understand complexity and are not afraid of it – people who recognize when change is needed and capable of making change happen. We hope you leave with knowledge informed by perspective, the confidence to act when action is called for, the patience to listen to opposing viewpoints, and the humility to keep learning long after today. The Colin Powell School has always believed that education and civic life in a democracy are inseparable. You carry that belief with you now, into whatever comes next.
For many of you, that next chapter is already taking shape. For others, it remains wonderfully open. Either way, you are better prepared than you may realize. Your time here has also shaped us. This School grows through the people who pass through it, and this class has left its mark. We are proud to call you members of this community for life, and we mean it sincerely. Come back. Stay connected. Lean on this network, and give back to it when you can.
To the families and friends in this room: thank you. Your encouragement, sacrifice, and love made today possible, and we celebrate alongside you with full hearts.
And to the Class of 2026: congratulations! We are so proud of you, and we cannot wait to see what you do next and how you make a difference in the world. With best wishes,
Ambassador Marc Ostfield (Ret.)

VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIANS
CLASS OF 2026 VALEDICTORIAN
KATHRYN HUANG GIOIOSA
Kathryn Huang Gioiosa is honored to be the 2026 Valedictorian of the Colin Powell School. As a senior at the CUNY Macaulay Honors College at The City College of New York, she studies Political Science with minors in Community Change Studies, Women and Gender Studies, and Health Justice. Kathryn is the Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of TREEage, a local, youth-led, and grassroots climate advocacy organization with thousands of high school and CUNY student members.
At the Colin Powell School, Kathryn has served as a Climate Policy Fellow and a Moynihan Center Public Service Fellow. Through these programs and additional support from the Colin Powell School, Kathryn has accomplished transformational public service internships across the country, including at Lambda Legal, the Center for Popular Democracy, and Harvard Law School’s Center for Labor and a Just Economy.
Kathryn is proud to be the 2025 New York Truman Scholar and a 2025 Udall Scholar, the first City College student to win both
awards. She was also named to the 2026 Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Impact list in recognition of her work at TREEage. Born and raised in Queens, Kathryn saw from a young age the two very different New Yorks that exist, and has dedicated her life to building a NYC where every person not only survives, but thrives. After graduation, she plans to continue working at TREEage before pursuing a Master’s program in City and Urban Planning to reimagine NYC’s infrastructure for generations to come.
