As I continue in my second year as president, I am convinced on a daily basis just how special this institution truly is. Co-Lin serves the greatest of students with the greatest of employees. We are proud of the recent institutional recognition received due to the many successes of our students and our dedicated faculty and staff.

We strive to provide the best instructional and athletic programs, using the best equipment, led by the best employees, and conducted in the best facilities. In maintaining this level of excellence, plans are being developed and implemented to address a variety of needs in the areas of programs, equipment, and facilities.

New instructional programs offered have generated much interest and added to the college’s enrollment. Plans for the new instructional facilities at the Simpson County Center and the Natchez Campus are progressing nicely. The new turf football field at Stone Stadium has been quite popular. In addition, we eagerly await the construction of our new President’s home and entrance sign.

The Back the Pack capital campaign has been successful thus far in helping the college to raise over one million dollars and is working hard toward raising the second million dollars. With these funds raised, we plan to continue on to the next phase of the comprehensive athletic facilities upgrade plan.

It has been encouraging to work with the many corporate sponsors and individual supporters who have supported the Back the Pack Campaign.

It is important for each one of you to know how honored I am to lead such an awesome institution during this exciting period in the college’s history. The future of Co-Lin is extremely bright, and CoLin truly is “The Place to Be.”

from the Alumni president | Deborah Lea As I write this I cannot help but look to the recent past and the foreseeable future of the Co-Lin Alumni Association. The past refers to all the homecoming festivities with the Alumni Association Luncheon as the premiere event of the weekend (of course, I readily admit I am a bit biased in this area). Those of us in attendance can attest, yet again, to the exceptional coordination, planning, and execution of the luncheon which was evident and of the highest quality. I am sure I will not be as inclusive as certainly needed, but Anna Grider’s dedication and handiwork could not have made the luncheon any better, the choir was amazing as usual, the Trailblazers aided immensely, Valley Services always puts forth the best meal, and the Alumni of the Year selection committee certainly met the intent in naming Kathy Sutton and Chris Caughman. I truly believe many would echo these same sentiments and more on a most successful luncheon. As always, meeting our Co-Lin friends and family is such a joy, even if it may be only once a year.

In looking to the future, as president of the Co-Lin Alumni Association, it is my sincerest hope that we see a greater participation and representation in the Association from across Co-Lin’s seven-county district as a minimum. Not only do I refer to Association-specific meetings, but anything Co-Lin related. If you have not already, please get connected to any and all CoLin communication methods. Contact the alumni office directly to ensure they have your latest contact information. Support as many activities throughout the year as possible. I assure you it will give you a greater appreciation for the institution in which we have so many connections. Co-Lin is far more dynamic than many of us may realize!

alumni association elects new officers athletic alumni chapter Allen Kent (‘84) has been elected as president of the Athletic Alumni Chapter. He will be joined by Megan Jones (‘93) as vicepresident and Meleah Howard (‘08) as secretary.

All former Co-Lin athletes and coaches are considered members of the athletic alumni association. The group meets twice annually and selects members for the college Sports Hall of Fame.

alumni association NEWS Senator Chris Caughman of Mendenhall and Kathy Sutton of New Hebron were honored as Alumni of the Year at Homecoming on Oct. 19. The selection is made by a committee of alumni from throughout Co-Lin’s district after accepting nominations from the alumni body.

Caughman is a 1987 graduate of Co-Lin where he was a member of the Wolf Pack basketball team and served as cocaptain his sophomore year. He was also on the president’s council and received the John Bead Award for scholastics. He attended Belhaven College, where he received a bachelor’s degree and lettered in basketball. Caughman also attended the graduate school of banking at the University of Mississippi, Louisiana State University, and Southern Methodist University.

He has also attended the Southeast School of Commercial Lending at Vanderbilt University.

Caughman began his career as a basketball coach and teacher working at Hillcrest Christian School, East Rankin Academy, and Simpson County Academy before he went into banking.

His banking career began at Trustmark National Bank in Magee as assistant vice president before he became vice president at Peoples Bank in Mendenhall. He was named senior vice president at Peoples Bank in 2009 and is still serving in that role today. Caughman was elected to the Mississippi State Senate in 2016 where he represents District 35 and is vice-chair of the education committee.

He has served as past president and board member of Simpson County Economic Foundation, Mendenhall Area Chamber of Commerce, Magee Chamber of Commerce, Simpson County Academy, Magee Lion’s Club, and Simpson County Ducks Unlimited. Caughman is currently serving as a board member of the Simpson County Youth Leadership Program and the CoLin Foundation Board of Directors.

Caughman and his wife Melissa are members of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. They have three children, Cade, Abby, and Bryce.

Sutton is a 1980 graduate of Co-Lin’s Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program, where she was named MLT Student of the Year. She completed her bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science from the University of Cincinnati in 2006.

Throughout her career, Sutton has worked for Hinds General Hospital, Magee General Hospital, Mississippi State Hospital, and the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery VA Medical Center. She has also published various works in the field of medical laboratory science.

Sutton is a long time member of the American Medical Technologists (AMT) organization, where she serves as the Mississippi state delegate to the national business meeting.

She has been a member of the AMT Laboratory, Certification, Education, Qualifications and Standards (EQS) Committee in which she writes items for the MT and MLT certification exams. She has also been a member of the Federal Government / Legislative Committee, served on the Professional Standards Board for Medical Technologists, and co-chair for the National American Medical Technologists Publication and Electronic Media Committee.

Sutton was the AMT representative at the Coordinating Council on Clinical Laboratory Workforce in Chicago, Illinois.

She received the National American Medical Technologist of the Year Award in 2017, and served as the 2018 president for the Mississippi Society of American Medical Technologists.

She and her husband, Lawrence (Pat) Sutton are members of New Hebron Baptist Church. They have two sons, Andy and Patrick, and five grandchildren.

alumni association | Sports Hall of Fame Inducts Four New Members The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Athletic Alumni Chapter inducted four members into its Sports Hall of Fame during their annual meeting at Homecoming on Oct. 19.

Those honored were Rebecca Bailey of Cullowee, North Carolina; Tony Bryant of Miramar, Florida; Richard Smith of Brookhaven; and Angellica “Nikki” Williams of Plano, Texas.

Rebecca Bailey Rebecca Lynn Bailey of Cullowhee, North Carolina, originally of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a 2008 graduate of Co-Lin where she led the softball team to a Runner-Up title in the NJCAA National Tournament (the highest finish of any sport in the history of the college). Bailey was named NJCAA First Team All-American, NJCAA First Team All-Region, and MACJC First Team All-State, while leading Co-Lin to an MACJC State Championship and a NJCAA Region 23 Championship title. She was also named to the NJCAA All-Tournament team.

While playing the entire season with a torn ACL, Bailey established single season school records for strikeouts (221), saves (3), and tied the team record for wins (21). Her ERA was a miniscule 1.34 during her historic season, allowing only 26 walks in 162 innings pitched, holding her opponents to a .173 batting average.

After Co-Lin, Bailey continued her softball career for Lock Haven University where she helped the team to a NCAA DII National Championship. Bailey was named the PSAC Pitcher of the Week and holds the school record for single game strikeouts (16). She graduated from Lock Haven University in 2014 with a degree in social work.

Bailey has served as a volunteer assistant softball coach at Central Mountain High School. She is currently the program manager for Meridian Behavioral Services, where she runs an elementary program for traumatized children.

Tony Bryant Tony Bryant of Miramar, Florida, is a 1996 graduate of Co-Lin where he was an All-State selection, All-American Defensive End and NJCAA Most Valuable Player. Bryant was named the No. 6 Junior College Prospect and the Top Junior College Player. During his freshman year at Co-Lin, Bryant also played post for the Wolf Pack basketball team where he was named All-State and Most Valuable Player.

After Co-Lin, Bryant went on to attend Florida State University where he was named to the All-ACC 2nd Team. At FSU, Bryant started at right defensive end and recorded 14 career sacks and 87 tackles. In 1999, Bryant was selected in the second round of the NFL draft (40th overall) by the Oakland Raiders. Bryant played for the Raiders from 1999-2002 and was a part of their Super Bowl season in 2002. While playing for the Raiders, Bryant recorded 92 solo tackles, 35 assists, 17 sacks, and one safety. In 2003, Bryant signed with the New Orleans Saints and played there until he went to the St. Louis Rams in 2006 for his final season in the NFL.

Following his NFL career, Bryant spent seven years as the defensive line coach at Miami Central High School and went to five state championships with the team. Bryant is currently the defensive line coach at Killian High School in Miami, Florida. Bryant and his wife Percylla have three children, India, Iyana, and Iniya.

Richard I. Smith Richard I. Smith of Brookhaven, is a 1972 graduate of Co-Lin where he was a two-time captain of the Wolf Pack football team and an All-State selection. Smith was named to the Mississippi Junior College All-Star team and awarded best offensive player as a center and best blocker for the Wolf Pack. While at Co-Lin, Smith also threw discus for the track team.

After Co-Lin, he attended Mississippi College and graduated in 1974 with a degree in business administration. For over 40 years, Smith has spent his career in asphalt plant operation, including state, federal, and private commercial work. He is a member of the Mississippi Asphalt Paving Association, Associated Builders and Contractors of Mississippi (ABC), Mississippi Associated General Contractors (AGC), and Mississippi Roadbuilders Association.

Smith is active in the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association and competes on the national level. In 2018, Smith rode in the National Championship for vintage motorcycle racing. Smith is a benefactor of the Copiah Animal Shelter, Allen Volunteer Fire Department, and Steens Volunteer Fire Department. Smith and his wife Patti have been married for 45 years and have one son, James Smith, Ph. D. Nikki Williams Angellica “Nikki” Williams of Plano, Texas, is a 2007 graduate of Co-Lin where she was named MACJC First Team All-State both her freshman and sophomore years and a MACJC All-Star. Williams was a part of the NJCAA All Region XXIII All-Tournament Team and NJCAA All Region XXIII Team in 2006 and 2007. Both seasons Williams played for the Wolf Pack, the team was MACJC South Division Champions and MACJC State Runner-up. With a record of 20-8, the team was NJCAA Region XXIII Runner-up in 2006, and with a record of 30-5, the team earned the title of NJCAA Region XXIII Champions in 2007. Williams helped lead the team to a NJCAA National Tournament 6th place finish and was named NJCAA 1st Team All-American.

alumni association | Outstanding Faculty and Staff The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Alumni Association recently honored five outstanding faculty and staff members during the annual fall convocation on the Wesson Campus.

The group was also recognized during the alumni luncheon at Homecoming on Oct. 19.

Those honored from the Wesson Campus were Jimmie Cain of Brookhaven; Julie Gaudin of McComb; and Brad Hamilton of Wesson.

Hope Berry of Magee was recognized for the Simpson County Center, and Jerika Browning of Natchez was the Natchez Campus honoree.

Hope Berry Berry was selected as Outstanding Faculty/Staff Member for the Simpson County Center. She has been employed at Co-Lin since 2016, and has a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Southern Mississippi. She currently works in the career-technical department at the Simpson County Center as a Practical Nursing instructor. She previously worked as the point of care coordinator at Magee General Hospital, where she was recognized as Employee of the Year. She is an active member of Rocky Hill Baptist Church.

Berry and her husband Brent have two children, Parker and Maylin.

Jerika Browning Browning was honored as Outstanding Faculty/Staff Member for the Natchez Campus. She has been working at Co-Lin since 2015 and serves as the secretary to the vice president on the Natchez Campus. She has attended the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Louisiana State University, and Columbia Southern University.

She is currently working on her bachelor’s degree in environmental management. Browning previously worked in information technology services, and restaurant and tourism management. She is a member of the Presbyterian Church in Natchez and is active in the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society. She was awarded the Howell C. Garner High Performance Award in 2016. Browning and her husband Les are expecting their first child, Quinn, due in November.

Jimmie Cain Cain was selected as Outstanding Staff Member of the Year for the Wesson Campus. She has been employed at Co-Lin since 2010, and serves as the public relations assistant. She attended the University of Tennessee Newspaper Technology Institute. Prior to Co-Lin, Cain worked for The Daily Leader for 23 years. Hamilton also earned a bachelor’s degree in math education from Mississippi College in 2001 and a master’s in mathematics from Mississippi College in 2005. He is an instructor in the mathematics and computer science division. He previously taught at Wesson Attendance Center from 2001-2007 and was honored as the 2018 Wesson Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year. He is a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Zion Hill Baptist Church. Hamilton and his wife Kimberly have three children, Allison, Laney, and Liam.

alumni association | Sports Hall of Fame Inducts Four New Members The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Athletic Alumni Chapter inducted four members into its Sports Hall of Fame during their annual meeting at Homecoming on Oct. 19.

Those honored were Rebecca Bailey of Cullowee, North Carolina; Tony Bryant of Miramar, Florida; Richard Smith of Brookhaven; and Angellica “Nikki” Williams of Plano, Texas.

Rebecca Bailey Rebecca Lynn Bailey of Cullowhee, North Carolina, originally of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a 2008 graduate of Co-Lin where she led the softball team to a Runner-Up title in the NJCAA National Tournament (the highest finish of any sport in the history of the college). Bailey was named NJCAA First Team All-American, NJCAA First Team All-Region, and MACJC First Team All-State, while leading Co-Lin to an MACJC State Championship and a NJCAA Region 23 Championship title. She was also named to the NJCAA All-Tournament team.

While playing the entire season with a torn ACL, Bailey established single season school records for strikeouts (221), saves (3), and tied the team record for wins (21). Her ERA was a miniscule 1.34 during her historic season, allowing only 26 walks in 162 innings pitched, holding her opponents to a .173 batting average.

After Co-Lin, Bailey continued her softball career for Lock Haven University where she helped the team to a NCAA DII National Championship. Bailey was named the PSAC Pitcher of the Week and holds the school record for single game strikeouts (16). She graduated from Lock Haven University in 2014 with a degree in social work.

Bailey has served as a volunteer assistant softball coach at Central Mountain High School. She is currently the program manager for Meridian Behavioral Services, where she runs an elementary program for traumatized children.

Tony Bryant Tony Bryant of Miramar, Florida, is a 1996 graduate of Co-Lin where he was an All-State selection, All-American Defensive End and NJCAA Most Valuable Player. Bryant was named the No. 6 Junior College Prospect and the Top Junior College Player. During his freshman year at Co-Lin, Bryant also played post for the Wolf Pack basketball team where he was named All-State and Most Valuable Player.

After Co-Lin, Bryant went on to attend Florida State University where he was named to the All-ACC 2nd Team. At FSU, Bryant started at right defensive end and recorded 14 career sacks and 87 tackles. In 1999, Bryant was selected in the second round of the NFL draft (40th overall) by the Oakland Raiders. Bryant played for the Raiders from 1999-2002 and was a part of their Super Bowl season in 2002. While playing for the Raiders, Bryant recorded 92 solo tackles, 35 assists, 17 sacks, and one safety. In 2003, Bryant signed with the New Orleans Saints and played there until he went to the St. Louis Rams in 2006 for his final season in the NFL.

Following his NFL career, Bryant spent seven years as the defensive line coach at Miami Central High School and went to five state championships with the team. Bryant is currently the defensive line coach at Killian High School in Miami, Florida. Bryant and his wife Percylla have three children, India, Iyana, and Iniya.

Richard I. Smith Richard I. Smith of Brookhaven, is a 1972 graduate of Co-Lin where he was a two-time captain of the Wolf Pack football team and an All-State selection. Smith was named to the Mississippi Junior College All-Star team and awarded best offensive player as a center and best blocker for the Wolf Pack. While at Co-Lin, Smith also threw discus for the track team.

After Co-Lin, he attended Mississippi College and graduated in 1974 with a degree in business administration. For over 40 years, Smith has spent his career in asphalt plant operation, including state, federal, and private commercial work. He is a member of the Mississippi Asphalt Paving Association, Associated Builders and Contractors of Mississippi (ABC), Mississippi Associated General Contractors (AGC), and Mississippi Roadbuilders Association.

Smith is active in the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association and competes on the national level. In 2018, Smith rode in the National Championship for vintage motorcycle racing. Smith is a benefactor of the Copiah Animal Shelter, Allen Volunteer Fire Department, and Steens Volunteer Fire Department. Smith and his wife Patti have been married for 45 years and have one son, James Smith, Ph. D. Nikki Williams Angellica “Nikki” Williams of Plano, Texas, is a 2007 graduate of Co-Lin where she was named MACJC First Team All-State both her freshman and sophomore years and a MACJC All-Star. Williams was a part of the NJCAA All Region XXIII All-Tournament Team and NJCAA All Region XXIII Team in 2006 and 2007. Both seasons Williams played for the Wolf Pack, the team was MACJC South Division Champions and MACJC State Runner-up. With a record of 20-8, the team was NJCAA Region XXIII Runner-up in 2006, and with a record of 30-5, the team earned the title of NJCAA Region XXIII Champions in 2007. Williams helped lead the team to a NJCAA National Tournament 6th place finish and was named NJCAA 1st Team All-American.

alumni association | Outstanding Faculty and Staff The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Alumni Association recently honored five outstanding faculty and staff members during the annual fall convocation on the Wesson Campus.

The group was also recognized during the alumni luncheon at Homecoming on Oct. 19.

Those honored from the Wesson Campus were Jimmie Cain of Brookhaven; Julie Gaudin of McComb; and Brad Hamilton of Wesson.

Hope Berry of Magee was recognized for the Simpson County Center, and Jerika Browning of Natchez was the Natchez Campus honoree.

Hope Berry Berry was selected as Outstanding Faculty/Staff Member for the Simpson County Center. She has been employed at Co-Lin since 2016, and has a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Southern Mississippi. She currently works in the career-technical department at the Simpson County Center as a Practical Nursing instructor. She previously worked as the point of care coordinator at Magee General Hospital, where she was recognized as Employee of the Year. She is an active member of Rocky Hill Baptist Church.

Berry and her husband Brent have two children, Parker and Maylin.

Jerika Browning Browning was honored as Outstanding Faculty/Staff Member for the Natchez Campus. She has been working at Co-Lin since 2015 and serves as the secretary to the vice president on the Natchez Campus. She has attended the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Louisiana State University, and Columbia Southern University.

She is currently working on her bachelor’s degree in environmental management. Browning previously worked in information technology services, and restaurant and tourism management. She is a member of the Presbyterian Church in Natchez and is active in the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society. She was awarded the Howell C. Garner High Performance Award in 2016. Browning and her husband Les are expecting their first child, Quinn, due in November.

Sanders is a 2008 graduate of Co-Lin where he studied music education and was a member of the Blue Wave Show Band. After Co-Lin, Sanders attended Mississippi State University and received a bachelor’s degree in music education with concentra¬tions in both piano and saxophone. While at Mississippi State, Sand¬ers was in the MSU Symphonic Band, a member of the MSU Chamber Singers, the Maroon Marching Band, MSU Wind Ensemble, MSU Jazz Band and Saxophone Ensemble.

Sanders is the director of choral activities at Southaven High School and the musical director for Southaven High School theater. He is the accompanist for the CoroFuente tenor bass choir, where he previously taught music theory. Sanders has been a church musician for over 12 years and is currently serving at pianist at First Baptist Church of Horn Lake and organist at Maples Memorial United Meth¬odist Church.

He has previously been an accompanist for the Mississippi ACDA All-State Treble Honor Choir, the Mississippi ACDA Male Vocal Sym¬posium, and the Southern Division ACDA Treble Honor Choir. In 2018, Sanders was awarded the Best in Class A cappella Choir and Best in Class Men’s Choir at Riverland Choral Festival. He has also received consistent superior ratings at the Mississippi State Performance As¬sessment since 2016.

Sanders is currently pursuing a master’s degree from Florida State University and is a member of the National Association for Music Education. He is married to Caysee Sanders.

Loftin is a 1982 graduate of Co-Lin where he studied music education. While at Co-Lin, Loftin was a member of the Blue Wave marching band and concert band where he was first chair trumpet for two years. He was a member of the Mississippi Community and Junior College Band for two years. After Co-Lin, Loftin attended the University of Southern Mississippi and received a bachelor’s degree in music education from Mississippi State University. He also earned a master’s degree in music education from Mississippi College.

Over his career, Loftin has served as band director at Starkville Academy and Ackerman High School, assistant director at Winona High School, and director at Wesson High School. While Loftin was director for Starkville Academy, the band received superior ratings all three years of his tenure. At Ackerman, his band received a superior rating and the title of Mid-America Champions in St. Louis, Missouri. The Winona High School band received superior ratings throughout Loftin’s tenure and were Grand Champions of the Dixie Classic Championship in Washington, D.C. Under Loftin’s leadership at Wesson High School, the band received superior ratings eight years in a row and 13 years of earning a superior rating in concert and sight reading, while consistently being ranked one of the top three bands in the state. He retired from teaching in 2013 and is now a full-time driver for Bus Supply Charters of McComb.

Loftin is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Marching Bands of America, past president of the East Central Band Association, a Mississippi Lion’s All-State Band Adjudicator, and past member of the Mississippi Lion’s Band winning the International Band Championship while he was director in 2009.

He is married to Terri Price Loftin and they have one daughter, Lindsey, and two grandchildren. They are members of First Baptist Church of Mendenhall.

Band and Colette Alumni Chapter Plans 8th Annual Princess Ball The Band and Colette Alumni Chapter is sponsoring their eighth annual “Princess Ball” for fathers and daughters on Feb. 8 at the Thames Center on the Wesson Campus.

The ball is open is fathers, grandfathers and father figures and girls ages 4-15. The event will be separated into two sessions, the first from 4:30-6:00 p.m. and the second from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Girls of any age can come to either session.

Tickets to the event are $30 per couple and $10 for each additional child. Dress for the event is formal, and photography will be available for an additional fee. Tickets may be purchased online at www.colin.edu.

Proceeds from the event fund the Clyde Wilson scholarship for band and Colette students.

The Class of 1958 reunion included Ann Burris Cagle, James Cagle, Bettye Boutwell, and James Nations.

Homecoming 2019 was another great weekend that once again proved Co-Lin will always be “The Place To Be.” With perfect weather all weekend long, many alumni, friends, and family returned to campus to enjoy the Homecoming activities. The weekend kicked off on Friday with the annual golf tournament, sponsored by the Co-Lin golf team, where Sharon Langley started the tournament with the honorary first shot. Later that evening, the president’s reception was held in the Thames Center.

This year’s honored guests were former and current CoLin coaches. Saturday’s events began with the Big Wolf Homecoming 5K, where there was a record number of participants. The Athletic Alumni Chapter held the induction ceremony of four new members into Co-Lin’s Sports Hall of Fame. Members of the 2019 class are Rebecca Bailey, Tony Bryant, Richard Smith, and Angellica “Nikki” Williams. The Band and Colette Alumni Chapter inducted Randy Loftin into its Hall of Fame and recognized Allen Sanders as the recipient of the Stanley Stewart Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

Over 200 alumni and friends attended the Alumni Association’s annual awards luncheon where the Association honored Chris Caughman and Kathy Sutton as the 2019 Alumni of the Year. Following the luncheon, alumni and friends gathered under the tents in the center of campus while children enjoyed food, games, bounce houses and more during the tailgate party. The tailgate featured entertainment by the Sojourners and a pep rally by the Blue Wave Show Band, Colettes, and cheerleaders. Stone Stadium was filled with fans to support Homecoming Queen Carly Polk and her court to cheer on the Wolf Pack against Jones College, where the Wolves were edged out by the Bobcats in the fourth quarter.

FOUNDATION NEWS The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Foundation Board of Directors recently elected two new members to serve on the board: Jessica Bueto Breazeale of Wesson and Brad Jones of McCall Creek.

The Co-Lin Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and serves as the fundraising arm of the college. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors and works to support the students, faculty, staff, and programs at Co-Lin.

Breazeale is a 2003 graduate of Co-Lin, where she was captain of the Colettes, Miss Co-Lin, vice president of publicity for Phi Theta Kappa, a member of the concert choir, Sojourner show choir, SGA, Trailblazers, and was a Diamond Doll. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public relations from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Breazeale has been a public relations practitioner for 15 years, and began her career working in entertainment on the Disney Cruise Line. She currently serves as the public affairs manager at Georgia-Pacific in the Monticello plant. She also has her own public relations consulting business which provides services to clients all over the United States.

Breazeale has recently become Accredited in Public Relations (APR) and has won numerous public relations awards. She serves on the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce Board and on the Co-Lin Band & Colette Alumni Chapter Board. She is a member of PRAM Pine Belt and Lincoln County Rotary.

Breazeale has been married to her husband Ricky for 11 years and they have one son, Walker. They are members of CenterPoint Church where her husband is the pastor.

Jones is a 1996 graduate of Co-Lin and 1998 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi. He received a juris doctor degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law and later earned a degree from Louisiana State University graduate school of banking.

Jones began his career as a member of the MeGehee, MeGehee & Torrey law firm where he practiced general law with an emphasis in real estate, commercial, corporate, and telecommunications law. In 2005, he became a Youth Court Referee and Family Special Master for Franklin County and currently still serves in this role. Jones also became president of Bank of Franklin in 2005 and was named Chief Executive Officer of the bank in 2010. He is presently serving in both of these roles.

Jones is a member of the American Bankers Association, Independent Community Bankers Association, Mississippi Bar Association, and Mississippi Bankers Association where he is the current chairman of the legislative committee and current board member of BancPac. He also is a board member for the Franklin County Education Corporation and is president of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.

He and his wife Kristie have one son, Andrew.

Fowler also attended the University of Southern Mississippi where she studied studio art. After moving to Nashville and picking up painting again, Fowler created hundreds of floral paintings until she felt like she “cracked an original code” and began posting her work on Instagram. Since then, Fowler has had her paintings used

by Anthropologie for bedding and rugs. She has also collaborated with several other companies and created designs for She Reads Truth, Pencil and Paper Co., May Designs, Juniper Print Shop, and Minted. BRADLEY SMITH: Have you ever been to a Co-Lin Wolf Pack football game? More specifically, have you been to one in the last half-century? If you have, you know the voice of Bradley Smith.

In a world where change comes rapidly, and where cherished customs are cast aside like week-old newspapers, Bradley Smith, as the public address announcer for the Co-Lin Wolves has been a remarkable constant. The Wolves’ recent Homecoming game against Jones College wrapped up Smith's 50th consecutive season at the mic.

“Co-Lin’s been good to me,” Smith said, “as has the town of Wesson. It’s been a great place to live, and to raise a family.”

A 1971 graduate of Delta State University, the Brookhaven native was hired by Co-Lin as Director of Student Activities that summer.

When football season started, Smith took over the job as P.A. announcer, a job he’s happily done ever since.

“I had just graduated from college and was looking for a job,” Smith said “When Mr. Forrest Case, who was Dean of Students at the time, contacted me and suggested that I apply for this new position at Co-Lin. That’s what brought me to Wesson.”

Smith’s time as the Wolf Pack public address announcer actually goes back further than 1971. Smith, who graduated from Co-Lin before going off to Delta State, was the football P.A. man during his sophomore year, in the fall of 1968. All told, Bradley Smith’s voice has been the voice of Co-Lin football for a total of 50 years.

A good P.A. announcer, according to Smith, should not be noticed all that much. He or she should blend into the flow of the game, much like the clanging of shoulder pads or an official’s whistle.

What is noticed, Smith says, is when the stadium announcer makes a mistake.

“In my first year,” Bradley recalls with a grin, “a runner crossed midfield, and I said that he got ‘to the 51-yard line.’ The entire home crowd turned around, in unison, and stared straight at me.”

Eventually, Smith would leave the Co-Lin faculty and staff and embark on a 33-year career in the banking business. He worked in banks in Wesson, Hazlehurst, and Brookhaven, but Smith and his wife Nena continued to live in Wesson, not far from the Co-Lin campus. That made it convenient for Smith to continue his P.A. duties.

Bradley and Nena raised their children, Clay and Macie, in Wesson, and are now the proud grandparents of five grandchildren.

Macie and husband J.D. Anderson live in Kingsport, Tennessee, and have three children. Clay and wife Carrie have two children.

Clay has been the head baseball coach at Co-Lin for the last seven seasons.

“That was thrilling,” Bradley said of son Clay becoming the Wolf Pack baseball coach. “He and Macie grew up on the Co-Lin The Colinian | 14

“The (on-campus) house Clay and his family live in now, is the house Nena and I brought him home to, from the hospital. Having him back here—and seeing Grady and C.C. grow up in Wesson and at Co-Lin much like he did— is just great.”

Clay Smith worked on the baseball staffs of Hill Denson and Corky Palmer at the University of Southern Mississippi, and later re-joined Denson at Belhaven, before taking the baseball position at Co-Lin. Bradley says that he has been blessed to see lots of great players, coaches, and teams during his time in the Co-Lin press box.

“We’ve had plenty of guys to go on and be great players at the major college level,” he says, “and some to go on and have good careers in the NFL.” A legendary Lawrence County duo from the early 1970s, Willie Harold Harris and Emmett Madison, still rank among his personal favorites.

“Those guys were electric,” Smith said. “They could go (for a touchdown) any time they touched the football. If the other team kicked or punted the ball to one of those guys, they were messing up.”

As for specific games, Smith recalls the 1985 East Bowl, in which Co-Lin hosted Nassau Community College of

New York, which came into the game ranked number one in the nation in JuCo football.

“There were press people from all over,” Smith recalls, “the most we’ve ever had at Co-Lin. And our guys put it to ‘em pretty good.” A five-overtime playoff win over Itawamba in that same era is another favorite memory.

As much a Wesson institution as Bradley Smith is, he is equalled in that regard by his wife of 46 years. Nena Smith’s School of Dance has been in operation since 1974. Nena, a native of Tutwiler who met Bradley when they were both students at Delta State, teaches the art to youngsters from three years of age through high school seniors. Nena’s dance studio sits right beside the couple’s charming 1894 home, and right across the street from Wesson Attendance Center.

With 50 years as the voice of the Wolves in the book, the obvious question is whether or not Smith will be back for number 51.

“If they ask me back, I’ll be happy to do it. I still enjoy it.”

That Copiah-Lincoln Community College will be happy to have Bradley Smith back at the mic next fall is as sure a bet as the coming of fall itself. If you haven’t been to a Co-Lin home football game in a while make plans to attend some games in 2020. Magee was a graduate of Magee High School and the University of Southern Mississippi, where she earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Upon graduation from college, Magee worked as a registered nurse in the Magee community for over 25 years. She cared for patients at Magee General Hospital, South Mississippi Homecare and Hospice, and Deaconess Homecare, before she began working for the Simpson County School District. For 12 years, students at Magee and Mendenhall Schools affectionately knew her as “Nurse Connie.”

Nursing was Magee’s true calling in life and her career gave her the opportunity to minister to many hurting people. Her desire was that young people in the community be afforded the same opportunity to serve others as she did, having a positive impact on healthcare in the area.

“We are honored to help carry on the legacy of Nurse Connie,” said Angela Furr, executive director of the Co-Lin Foundation.

“Her legacy of loving others and caring for her community will continue on for years to come. We are grateful to the Magee family for their gifts and support of the nursing students at CoLin in Simpson County.”

The Robert & Julia Arnold Journalism & Communication Studies Scholarship was endowed with the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Foundation.

Robert Arnold graduated from West Virginia University (’70) with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and from New School for Social Research (’75) with a master’s degree in liberal studies.

Arnold has spent his career in the journalism and communication fields, working in public relations for 20 years and in emergency management communication for 15 years, before becoming editor of the Wesson News in 2013. Julia Arnold graduated from Borough of Manhattan Community College with an associate’s degree and has spent her career in publishing, public relations and advertising in varied administrative support positions. The Arnolds have lived in Wesson since 2010.

The Arnolds hope this scholarship endowment will respond to the ever increasing need for professionalism in a complex modern public media environment.

“The number and variety of media far outstrips the number of professionals equipped with the required skill sets and schooling in the ethics of fairness, truthfulness and accuracy to assure that they responsibly and meaningfully serve the public good in a democratic society,” Robert said. “We think every journalist needs proper training.”

The scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to pursue studies in the broad area of journalism, communication or public information.

“We are so appreciative of the Arnolds for their generosity and commitment to providing scholarship support for journalism students,” Foundation director Angela Furr said.

“This endowment not only serves as a legacy for Bob and Julia, but also encourages prospective students to pursue a career in media.”

Alumni Spotlight Clancy Smith (’12), of Brookhaven, is currently attending the University of Glasgow in Scotland to pursue a masters degree in history. After CoLin, Smith graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in history. She has spent the past few years working as a deputy clerk in the Lincoln County Circuit Clerk’s office.

Upon graduation, Smith plans to return to Mississippi and would love to teach at the college level and one day become a curator at a museum.

The Nurse Connie Scholarship was established with the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Foundation. The scholarship, honoring the late Connie Magee of Magee, was gifted by Magee’s husband, David, and their four daughters, Nicole Magee Cheramie, Alisha Magee, Emily Magee, and Hannah Magee. This annual scholarship will benefit a local Simpson County student pursuing a degree in nursing on either the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) track.

AN UPDATE ON THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR CO-LIN ATHLETICS After launching the Back The Pack Capital Campaign for Co-Lin Athletics one year ago in November of 2018, more than $1 million of our $5.2 million goal has been secured through individual gifts and pledges and corporate sponsorships. Efforts are well underway into securing the second million for the campaign.

Many projects from phase one have been completed including the new turf field that has been installed at Stone Stadium. A new scoreboard was hung in Mullen Gymnasium, along with window graphics added to the outside doors, and several windows were replaced in offices. At the Lady Wolves

softball field, new equipment was purchased, heating and air conditioning replaced in the offices, and fencing was replaced down the lines. A new top dresser was purchased for the golf course to help improve course maintenance.

Phase one renovations will be completed with the construction of a brand-new tennis complex. This complex will be located adjacent to the softball field, include six tennis courts and will share parking with softball.

J. Ronny Smith ('66), passed away on August 13, 2019.

Smith was a member of the Co-Lin basketball team. He and his wife Carolyn (’66) were also named Mr. and Miss Co-Lin as students.
