This will be an exciting year at Co-Lin because we are celebrating our centennial! Just over a hundred years ago, a booster club was formed in Wesson with the primary purpose of increasing public awareness of the importance and value of an education. That first meeting of local supporters and community leaders led to a decision that a new agriculture high school would be located in Wesson with the town putting up the first $8,000. After a donation of land and the construction of classroom buildings, the Copiah-Lincoln Agricultural High School opened its doors to students on September 6, 1915. Our budget at Copiah-Lincoln has grown to over $25 million with three campuses serving over 3,000 students each fall semester. Nevertheless, some things have not changed and most of our students at Co-Lin still graduate from small high schools from within our seven-county district. As in the past, they look to Co-Lin to provide them with the solid educational foundation they need to transfer to a university or to gain the work skills they need to get a job. To celebrate our 100 years as Copiah-Lincoln, we hosted a special Founders Day event on September 3 at the Wesson Campus. Our special guest speaker was Co-Lin graduate and Mississippi’s Commissioner of Agriculture Cindy Hyde-Smith. It was a great event and we will share more information about our celebration in future publications. We also celebrated the 10th year of operation at our Simpson County Center this year. Since opening in 2005 enrollment has peaked at over 600 students and we currently have an enrollment of over 500 students. Our future is bright and we look forward to the next

Letter to Alumni and Friends | Marilyn Brown This is an exciting time for the college and our alumni association. As alumni president, I hope to be able to engage our alumni as we honor the past, the present and the future. This year the college will focus on the centennial of Co-Lin as an educational institution. Although the two-year college was not added until 1928, a lot of history remains in those early years of Co-Lin. Take a trip down Co-Lin memory lane by visiting www. colin.edu then click Libraries. On the left side of the page you can then browse Annuals & Publications and Historical Documents. I look forward with enthusiasm to Homecoming 2015. Activities begin on Thursday, October 1 and will culminate with Homecoming Day on Saturday,
October 3. Several special alumni groups plan to meet and reunions for the classes that end in “5” will be held. I certainly look forward to seeing many of my classmates, Co-Lin Class of ’75. Homecoming | Co-Lin plans Homecoming Copiah-Lincoln Community College is planning Homecoming events for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 1-3. Alumni, friends and students are welcomed to the campus to re-connect and enjoy activities. Homecoming weekend will kick off with a concert in the Fine Arts auditorium from the Three Co-Lin Tenors featuring Joe Elliot, Dwayne Nix, and JD Longmire. The trio performed as Co-Lin students back in the 80s and are looking forward to reuniting their voices. The annual reception at the president’s home will honor former Alumni of the Year on Friday evening at 5 p.m. If you are a former Alumnus or Alumna of the Year and have not received an invitation by Sept. 15, contact the alumni office. The Athletic Alumni Association will hold their annual meeting and Hall of Fame induction on Saturday at 9:00. The Band and Colette Alumni Chapter will dedicate the auditorium in the Maggie Flowers Ewing Fine Arts building in honor of former band director Stanley Stewart during their annual meeting at 9:30. They will also hold their Hall of Fame induction and present the Stanley Stewart Outstanding Young Alumni award.

Athletics News | Alum hired as new cheer coach Micah Beassie Allen (‘03) is the new cheerleading coach for Co-Lin athletics. Allen served as a Wolfpack cheerleader during her time as a student. She replaces longtime cheer coach Twyana Morse. A native of Brookhaven, Allen graduated from Mississippi College with a business degree following her time in Wesson. A cheerleader since the age of 11, Allen was a member of the Brookhaven High School cheer squad. She has also worked at the Mississippi Gym of Dreams for seven years, coaching children
from ages three and up. Allen was selected as a NCA All-American five times and has worked at numerous junior high and high school cheer camps, as well as given private lessons. “I’m elated over this new opportunity,” said Allen. “My family is looking forward to joining the Co-Lin family,” said Allen. Allen is married to Collins Allen (’01) and is the mother of four sons, Jack, Mason, Carson Mac, and Judd Michael. The Allens are members of First Baptist Church of Brookhaven.

Rickey Clopton (’71), Roshanda Alexander (’95), and Bill Shivers (’01) each made a lasting impression during their time at Co-Lin. Here’s what they’re up to today:
Rickey Clopton of Wesson was a top-
notch student athlete during his years at CoLin, and still remains involved with the college today. As a student, he was a member of the Wolfpack football and baseball teams, served as vice president of the Student Association, and was a member of the Wolf Squad and Clopton then the Wesley Foundation, in which he served as vice president. He was inducted into the college Hall of Fame. After Co-Lin, Clopton received a Clopton today bachelor’s degree in education from Delta State University and a master’s degree from Jackson State University. He completed additional study at the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University. He taught and coached football at Co-Lin from 1997-2001 and did volunteer work for the football team for 18 years. Today he serves as Copiah County’s superintendent of education and is a member of the college’s board of trustees. He has also coached and taught high school at Ocean Springs, Terry, Wesson, and Crystal Springs. “I’ve never not been in some way involved with Co-Lin,” Clopton said. “Completing four years of high school and two years of college there was a great experience. Having some of the same teachers in high school and in college such as Randolph Stricklin, Carol Parsons, Donald Johnson, and Malcom Nesmith was special.” Clopton is a member of numerous educational organizations such as the Mississippi Association of School Superintendents, as well as the Wesson Lion’s Club and Decell Memorial Methodist Church. He is married to the former Mary Pettigrew (’73), and
they have a son, Tommy (’94) and a daughter, Michelle Berch, both of Wesson, and four grandchildren.
Roshanda Atterberry Alexander of Sontag
was an all-around great student at Co-Lin in the 90s, serving as a member of just about every campus organization available. She was a cheerleader, a Trailblazer, a member of the Student Government Association, Alpha Omega Science Club, English Club, Phi Theta Alexander then Kappa, and President’s Council, and was selected as a campus favorite both her freshman and sophomore years, and was inducted into the college’s Hall of Alexander today Fame. After Co-Lin, Alexander received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Southern Mississippi and a master’s degree in nursing education from Alcorn State University. Today, Alexander is a registered nurse and health sciences instructor at Lawrence County Technology and Career Center and serves as an advisor to HOSA, a national student organization for future health professionals, and as the cheer coach at Lawrence County High School. She is married to Cedric Alexander and they have two children, Halle, age 11, and Caleb, two years old. She is a member of Quinn’s Temple Church of God in Christ in Monticello, and is active in her community, keeping busy with her children’s extracurricular activities. “I tell my students all the time that CoLin was the best time of life,” Alexander said. “I made so many new friends and strengthened friendships already formed. Co-Lin felt like a big circle of family with extended family members around every corner.”
Bill Shivers of Columbus, was involved
in everything and a friend to everyone during his time at Co-Lin. He was president of the Trailblazers, vice president of leadership of Phi Theta Kappa, a member of the Baptist Student Union, Alpha Omega Science Club, and the Student Government Association, serving as class president his sophomore year. He was selected as a campus favorite and was inducted into the college’s Hall of Fame. After Co-Lin, Shivers received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Mississippi State University and a master’s degree in reliability and maintainability engineering from the University of Tennessee. Today, he is a senior reliability enShivers then gineer with Weyerhaeuser Columbus Cellulose Fibers. He has been married to Christy Speas Shivers for seven years, and they have two children, William, age Shivers today 4, and Olivia, 21 months. They attend First United Methodist Church of Columbus. Shivers said he has many great memories of his time at Co-Lin, his favorites including time spent serving in PTK. “I got to participate in many of the service projects sponsored by Eta Omega during my sophomore year and it was an awesome experience,” Shivers said. “My favorite was the after-school project at Wesson Elementary where we helped the children with their studies and spent time playing games with them on the playground.” To submit alumni for “Where are they now?” contact Angela Furr at (601) 643-8498 or email angela.furr@colin.edu. Foundation News | Former math instructor establishes scholarship Dr. Roy Daughdrill of Wesson and his wife Gerry recently established a scholarship in his name with the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Foundation. The Dr. Roy W. Daughdrill Mathematics Scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2016 to a student majoring in math, engineering or computer science at the Wesson campus. Daughdrill is a 1962 graduate of Co-Lin and taught math and computer science courses at the college for over 30 years. He also served as chair of the math and computer science division from 1974 until he retired from full-time teaching in 2001. He remained at Co-Lin part-time until 2004, and then returned in 2005 as the director of the Quality Enhancement Project for SACS accreditation until 2010. Daughdrill worked to establish the first personal computer lab at Co-Lin and taught the first Introduction to Computer courses. A computer lab in the Dow Young Instructional Technology building was named in his honor in 2004. “I received a scholarship myself when I was a student at CoLin,” Daughdrill said. “I remembered how much that scholarship helped me, and my wife and I wanted to be able to help a student in the same way.” The Daughdrills combined have over 70 years of experience
in education. Gerry taught in the McComb and Brookhaven Public School systems for 32 years. They both value education and have a strong desire to support students. They are members of First Baptist Church in Brookhaven, where they both teach Sunday school classes, and he is on staff as an organist. “I enjoyed working at Co-Lin,” Daughdrill said. “I had wonderful students, many of whom I still see around today and have gone on to become very successful. Band and Colette Alumni Chapter establishes scholarships The Co-Lin Band and Colette Alumni Chapter recently established the Clyde Wilson Memorial Scholarship and the Stanley Stewart Band Scholarship with the Co-Lin Foundation. The Wilson Scholarship was established in memory of the late band director. Wilson was a 1950 graduate of Co-Lin and served as band director for over 10 years. Under his leadership, the Co-Lin band and Colettes became one of the most outstanding junior college show bands in the nation. He was inducted into the Co-Lin Band and Colette Hall of Fame in 2008. Following his career at Co-Lin, Wilson also served as editor and publisher of Tombigee Country Magazine. He passed away in 2009. Stanley Stewart of Wesson was involved in the music program at CoLin for over 40 years, serving as an instrumental music instructor, assistant director and director of bands, and chairperson of the fine arts division until his retirement in 2001. 2001, he served as an adjunct music instructor and assistant Blue Wave Show band director, and director of the Co-Lin jazz ensemble until he fully retired in 2013. Stewart is also being honored by having the auditorium in the Maggie Flowers Ewing Fine Arts building named after him. A ceremony is planning during the Band and Colette Alumni Chapter’s Homecoming activities.
During his tenure, he established the first concert band, initiated student woodwind, percussion and brass ensembles, and was responsible for incorporating visual sound and color into the halftime shows in the 1970s, including auxiliaries such as drum, bugle and flag corps. His influence is still evident in the music program at Co-Lin today.
Scholarship fund established in honor of Charlotte Hill Friends of former Co-Lin Foundation executive director Charlotte Hill have established a scholarship fund in her honor. Hill, of Hammond, Louisiana, served as executive director of the Foundation and Alumni Affairs from 2003 to 2010. She brought an unprecedented level of professionalism to the Foundation from her experience in development at Southeastern Louisiana University, Jackson State University, and Piney Woods School. Under her leadership, the Foun-
dation has grown to become a viable source of funding for the needs of students, faculty, and the college in the form of scholarships for both faculty and staff and for programs of the college. Hill is currently undergoing radiation
treatment and chemotherapy for an inoperable brain tumor. The intent of the scholarship committee is to honor her for her accomplishments and reward her for the value she added to the Co-Lin Foundation. Hill is married to Albert “Sonny” Hill (’59), and they have one daughter, Brenda, and three grandchildren. Gifts can be given to the Foundation designated to the Charlotte Hill Scholarship at P.O. Annual golf tournaments raise funds for college New chemistry lab to The Co-Lin Foundation’s annual golf classics in Natchez and Wesson each held successful years in raising funds for scholarships and program support at the college, be named after Lanier pulling in almost $13,000 and more than $17,000, respectively.

Former students and colleagues of the late Dr. Phyllis Lanier are invited to an open house and dedication of the new chemistry laboratory in Smith Hall to be named after the iconic late instructor during Homecoming activities on Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. Lanier taught chemistry at Co-Lin from 1963 until 2001 and served as chairperson of the science division and as a member of the Foundation Board until her death in 2002. A scholarship was established in November 2000 by her friends and faculty members. The scholarship is awarded to a sophomore with a 3.00 or better GPA and must be an allied health or science teacher education major or pre-professional. Alaskan Cruise
Forty Co-Lin alumni and friends cruised to Alaska during the week of July 10-18. The group flew from New Orleans to Seattle and spent an evening and morning touring the city, visiting the Space Needle, Pike’s Place, and other landmarks before boarding
the Crown Princess. The scenic cruise stopped in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria, B.C. The group enjoyed the breathtaking scenery, fresh seafood, and fellowship. To see more photos from the trip, visit the Co-Lin Alumni page on Facebook.
100 Years of Copiah-Lincoln

The first day of classes was September 6, 1915 at Copiah-Lincoln Agricultural High School. Changes in technology, facilities and student life have been abundant over the past 100 years, but a commitment to quality education has remained steadfast at CoLin. Copiah-Lincoln is said to have begun at a picnic held under a magnolia tree at the home of Frances Hodges in Wesson in 1914. A booster club consisting of R.L. Landis, Russell Ellzey, Paul Burt, Dr. W. L. Little, R.E. Rea, V.D. Youngblood and I.J. Williams was formed with the main purpose of increasing public awareness of the importance and value of organizing a school to serve Copiah and Lincoln counties. Those names may not be familiar to many, but a walk around campus will reveal buildings named in honor of several of these influential men.
The decision was made at the picnic to create the new agricultural high school in Wesson. The town of Wesson gave $8000 towards the cause, a large sum of money during those times. The first meeting of the trustees of Co-Lin Agricultural High School was held on Dec. 9, 1914. The hand-written minutes of the meeting, along with other historical documents, are currently housed in a fire-proof safe in the library on the Wesson campus. Following that first board meeting, things moved quickly. Buildings were constructed and faculty were elected by secret ballot due to the overwhelming pool of applicants. R.L. Landis was elected to serve as the first principal. According to “Almost a Hundred,� a historical account of Copiah-Lincoln Agricultural High School and the College written by library director Ken Chapman and librarian Sonya Cowen, the annual salary of the principal was $1,500, and teachers earned $75 per month for the session.
Of the 125 students enrolled in the new high school, 40 of them boarded. Board ranged from $4.60 to $5.75 per month, according to the 1968 paper written by Frances Frazier “Copiah-Lincoln Junior College: Development, Scope, and Perspectives.” To keep those rates low, it was necessary for the boys to work on the farm one day each month and the girls to serve for a six-week term in the dining hall. Over the years, Co-Lin continued to grow. The first freshman year of the college began on Sept. 10, 1928. Eventually the high school and college separated in 1979, and the school became known as Copiah-Lincoln Junior College from 1979 until 1988, at which point it was renamed Copiah-Lincoln Community College in an effort to enhance the expanding role in the communities served by Co-Lin, as it is affectionately known today. The two original counties served by the school have grown into a district serving seven counties, Copiah, Lincoln, Simpson (1933), Franklin (1949), Lawrence (1966), Jefferson (1968), and Adams (1971). The Natchez campus was added in 1972, and the Simpson County Center opened in 2005. Co-Lin has seen only ten leaders in its 100 years including superintendents of the agricultural high school, R.L. Landis (1916-1918), W.I. Thames (1919-1920), T.S. Cathey (1921-1922), and Russell Ellzey (1923-1932), and presidents of the college, Russell Ellzey (1928-1932), James Ewing (1932-1956), Willie Smith (1943-45), F.M. Fortenberry (1956-1968), Dr. Billy Thames (1968-1996), Dr. Howell Garner (1996-2008), and Dr. Ronald Nettles (2008-today). Over the past 100 years, Co-Lin has grown from an idea of a few men under a shade tree into a thriving community college that has and continues to educate some of the best and brightest students in our area. If the success of our past administrators, faculty, staff and alumni are any indicator, Co-Lin’s future remains bright. It is still The Place to Be.
A l u m n i S p ot l i g h t Tim Cunningham (’97) has recently been named sports medicine and operations coordinator at Kings Daughter’s Therapy Center. He received a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from University of Mississippi Medical Center and is currently completing the certification process for mechanical diagnosis and therapy. He is married to Sandy Stephens Cunningham (’99), and they have two boys, Conner, age 9 and Carson, age 6. Cunningham is active in the community serving as a tee-ball and Dixie Youth baseball coach with the Brookhaven Recreation Department, and is an active member of Easthaven Baptist Church, where he serves as a deacon and teaches a Sunday school class along with his wife.

Former students and colleagues of the late Dr. Phyllis Lanier are invited to an open house and dedication of the new chemistry lab in Smith Hall to be named after the iconic late instructor. The open house begins at 1 p.m. The annual Alumni Association’s awards luncheon will be held in the Henley Cafeteria at 11:00 and the tailgate party begins at 12:30 at Stone Stadium. Pre-game activities begin in Stone Stadium at 2:00 followed by a 2:30 game between Co-Lin and Hinds Community College.
